Top Floor deserves credit from early on, as it reminds us how the single-location thriller is an evergreen idea among cinematic concepts. On a budgetary level, it offers a money-saving solution that can appeal to producers, but it also works conceptually, as characters must face themselves in a location where they cannot run from the truth. It is unsurprising that Alfred Hitchcock has utilised this idea multiple times, while it has continued into the modern day with the likes of Buried and Gerald’s Game.
Writer/Director Jérémy Minui utilizes that premise for his feature which follows Julia (Justine Wachsberger), an influencer whose social media account has amassed just under 12 million followers. She is introduced walking past adoring fans before she gets into a car with her employer, events that...

Ryan Reynolds, known for his sharp wit and undeniable charm, is a master at pushing boundaries, both on screen and off. While he might seem daring as Merc with a Mouth, the truth is, behind the scenes, he’s far more relatable — full of nerves just like the rest of us.
Yep, don’t be fooled by his fearless Deadpool persona because he had a personal fright that he later managed to overcome. So, how’d Reynolds beat that? It all started with his first superhero role — and if you think it was Deadpool, then nope!
It was his often-forgotten turn as Green Lantern. But saving the universe wasn’t the only thing it helped with. That gig actually helped him tackle that pretty personal fear: flying!

And if that wasn’t enough, it also led him to find the love of his life.

I found myself at a loss for words after watching director Ethan Hegel’s Purgatory Station. At least I had to suffer through this thing for work, and I will be paid for writing this article, but I can’t even imagine what a few of y’all who were unfortunate enough to have watched this in the wild must be going through. I do have a penchant for bad movies as long as they’re unintentionally funny. But Purgatory Station is nothing short of a frontal assault on your senses. It has a lead character so annoying that you wouldn’t be bothered by all the terrible things happening to him. On top of that, the actor who’s playing him has done quite a terrible job. Everything else, from the supporting characters to the story to the execution, is atrocious. I don’t see any point in discussing this movie,...

Ryan Reynolds got buried alive in a shallow grave in the underrated 2010 thriller Buried, and it’s the same exact plot as the CSI episode that was guest-directed by Quentin Tarantino. Since Reynolds’ last few roles have been snarky and self-aware, there’s a misconception that Deadpool is the only character he’s capable of playing. But in Buried, he gave a straightforward dramatic performance as an American truck driver buried in a wooden coffin with a Zippo lighter and a cell phone in the Iraqi desert.
Reynolds gave one of his best performances in Buried. The movie takes place entirely within the coffin and the only other actors speak to Reynolds over the phone, so he has to carry the entire film on his shoulders, and he does so ably. He gets the audience swept up in this man’s desperate attempts to be found and rescued with the...

What Challenges Did Ryan Reynolds Face While Filming Buried? ( Photo Credit – Instagram )
Ryan Reynolds in a coffin for 95 minutes? Sounds like a setup for a Deadpool joke—but Buried was no laughing matter. Back in 2010, the Hollywood funnyman faced one of his darkest fears—claustrophobia—in a role that left him gasping for air, literally and emotionally.
The thriller Buried, directed by Rodrigo Cortés, dropped Reynolds into a wooden coffin as Paul Conroy, an American truck driver in Iraq who wakes up buried alive. Armed with just a lighter, a cell phone, and some profound desperation, Paul tries to outsmart his captors and find a way out. Now, imagine shooting all that inside an actual coffin. Reynolds didn’t just act; he endured.
“Claustrophobia is a primal fear that exists within everybody. For me, I was enclosed in there and had moments of utter panic,” Ryan Reynolds admitted to The Standard.

Known for his crime thrillers Lucky and The Scrapper, writer/director Bari Kang makes the transition to horror with his latest film, Itch!, which had its World Premiere at Dances With Films. It’s the second film from the festival I’ve reviewed, and like Bleeding, it looks at a supernatural creature, in this case zombies, from a different perspective and with an emphasis on the psychological as well as the physical risks of dealing with them.

A woman finds herself kidnapped and entrapped in the enclosed space of a speeding car’s trunk, wearing her wedding dress, and with her phone as the only available tool. The situation deteriorates gradually as a failed escape attempt costs the life of an innocent bystander. With the clock ticking towards a slow death from heat exhaustion in the Texas desert, a psychotic kidnapper at the wheel, Amanda is forced to make her own luck in the end. A dangerous game of questions and deadly consequences – to be played over the phone with the mysterious kidnapper – seems the only way to maybe discover his true identity, get help, or escape.

A man finds himself trapped in a room with no way out in director Nicolai Schümann’s thriller. Here’s our The Lonely Musketeer review.
In director Nicolai Schümann’s The Lonely Musketeer, Rupert (Edward Hogg) wakes up in a room with no way out. He has no clue how he got there, at first thinking it might have been the result of a particularly wild night out. Then things begin to get very serious when he realises there really is no way out and no one knows where he is.
All Rupert has is his trusty Nokia 3310 phone, revealing the film to be somewhat of a period piece. Thankfully, the Nokia 3310’s battery would last for days rather than mere hours like this writer’s iPhone. It’s his one connection to the outside world and his only way of getting help. Unfortunately, it also connects him to the...

Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman are said to be making a ‘scary’ supernatural film next. But what is Deeper, and why do they want to make it?
Across his lengthy career to date, Tom Cruise has climbed the tallest building in the world, clung to the side of a plane during take-off, and fought an Egyptian mummy. What’s left for a Hollywood star who’s done everything? According to director Doug Liman, head off on a mission to the bottom of the ocean.
Liman himself broke the news about what could be his next collaboration with Cruise earlier this week when he told Showbiz411 that he and the star are planning to make a “scary” supernatural thriller together. That thriller is said to be Deeper, a script originally written in 2015 and which prompted one of those studio bidding frenzies we hear about from time to time; at one stage,...

Despite his numerous accolades in various roles, Ryan Reynolds arguably gave one of his best performances in Buried, a 14-year-old mystery thriller which has 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Originally gaining recognition in comedies, particularly in the rom-com genre, in recent years, Reynolds is known for his roles in action movies and for playing the notorious Marvel character, Deadpool. Therefore, with a skillset for delivering highly intense roles, it comes as no surprise that one of Ryan Reynolds best performances is in an English-language Spanish survival movie which released in 2010, just one year after his original Deadpool debut.
The years eclipsing 2010 were rather interesting for Reynolds, as they contain his most famous roles; X-Men Origins: Wolverine was released in 2009 alongside The Proposal, and Reynolds played the titular character in Green Lantern in 2011. Reynolds gained notoriety as an action and comedy star, and has since broken records with MCUs Deadpool & Wolverine, with plans...

Zombies has made a well-received return in Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The two launch maps, Terminus and Liberty Falls, have been favorably reviewed by fans and critics alike. Comparisons have been made to the subseries' greatest hits, like Black Ops 2's Zombies, resulting in a return-to-form for the game mode after a few underwhelming years. Both of the launch maps benefit from some updates to the core mechanics of Black Ops 6, such as the fluid omni-movement system and the Arsenal weapon upgrade machine, making the game feel vastly different to older iterations.
Due to Black Ops 6's positive reception, thoughts have turned to potential remasters and remakes of older Zombies maps. This has happened often in the subseries, especially in 2015's Black Ops 3, which featured eight classic maps from previous games. Updating maps and experiences from almost 15 years ago in a modern engine, with contemporary graphics, would theoretically make...

Ryan Reynolds’ brand of humor has made him a beloved star in Hollywood both on and off the screen, and it still doesn’t feel real to him — even when his movie “Deadpool & Wolverine” grosses more than $1.5 billion.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” became a box office behemoth, pulling in an astounding $636 million domestically and securing its place as the 12th highest-grossing film in history. It now sits just behind Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and ahead of Warner Bros.’ summer sensation “Barbie.” It’s also surpassed the 2019 thriller “Joker” to become the highest-grossing R-rated film ever. And among Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe juggernauts, “Deadpool 3” claims the seventh spot, having recently overtaken “Iron Man 3” globally.
Reflecting on his latest blockbuster with Variety‘s Awards Circuit Podcast, Reynolds describes the whirlwind of emotions watching “Deadpool & Wolverine” break records. “It feels great,” he says with a laugh, “but I...

Quick Links Everything Coming To Paramount+ In October The Best Movies And Shows Coming To Paramount+ This Month
Paramount+ has plenty of new TV shows and movies coming in October 2024, including a lot of horror content for the month of Halloween. Paramount+ launched in March 2021 as a rebranding of the CBS All Access streaming platform, with the goal of expanding its offerings and reach. Thanks to the re-merger between CBS and Viacom in 2019, Paramount+ also has access to Nickelodeon, Comedy Central, and MTV libraries. That usually means that library content is more exciting for subscribers than new content because they can binge existing series.
Unlike some of its competitors, Paramount+ has not put an emphasis on original movie programming except in the case of childrens films. However, the streaming service does have a popular lineup of exclusive original series, including the multiple-timeline and decade-spanning Yellowstone franchise. In September 2024, some of...

I’m not sure why someone would name a film Buried Alive & Survived, which pretty much gives away the whole plot, but since it’s Lifetime Network, you kinda have to let it slide. However, there’s no such twist in this one, and the title turns out to be very literal. That’s understandable, given this film falls under the network’s “based on a true story” category, where they just pick up headlines from the newspapers and make movies out of them, I suppose. Anyway, let us see what goes on in Buried Alive & Survived.
Spoilers Ahead
What Happens in the Movie?
Getting right to the point, the first scene of the movie finds our lead, Alicia, trapped inside a coffin and crying for help. The coffin is most definitely buried underground. This is exactly how the Ryan Reynolds movie Buried also started, but the difference here is,...

The episode of What Happened to This Horror Movie? covering Blade: Trinity was Written by Mike Holtz, Narrated by Tyler Nichols, Edited by Paul Bookstaber, Produced by Andrew Hatfield and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
You know that scene in Ted where he’s in the bathtub trying to get Mark Wahlberg to come over because he has the Cheers DVD box set and everyone is talking sh*t about each other during the interviews? Well that’s Friday the 13th documentary Crystal Lake Memories…..but it’s also today’s video about Blade Trinity….where we breakdown a long and twisted story that involves a director hiring a biker gang to protect him from his lead actor, the possible birth of Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool, and multiple lawsuits. Thank goodness all this ended up producing a universally loved Blade sequel we can all enjoy for years to come.

I wonder what exactly went behind conceiving a movie like The Abandon and then actually making it! If we only go by the idea of it, the sci-fi thriller, directed by Jason Sutterlund, can’t be termed bad, per se—even if it borrows from tons of other things, mainly from Cube (1997) and Buried (2010), both much superior films. But the issue here is that this one, despite having an interesting story, feels like a slog. Ninety-seven minutes feels like an eternity. There are only two things that can be blamed here: the writing is bland as hell, and lead actor Jonathan Rosenthal is no Jake Gyllenhaal, Tom Hardy, or even Ryan Reynolds; no offense. What’s even worse is that the payoff in the end is unsatisfying. I’m all for an ambiguous ending, but this one feels like nothing but a gimmick. However, I’m still going to make...

One of the things that we'd come to expect from the Alamo Drafthouse in its early days were excellent promotional screenings for horror and other genre flicks. There was something about having to walk through a room full of flies on the way to watch Amityville, or something like it. Founder Tim League bought a box of fly eggs for the occassion and waited too long to open the box. They'd all hatched so he literally opened a sealed box of live flies in a close room and it was hilariously catastrophic. Or, there was the time a handful of fans were buried then watched Buried. As the franchise grew in size those kind of diminished or fell to the wayside but tomorrow in...

There’s something about an isolated horror flick that just makes you feel at home. Kick your shoes off, relax, and make a snack because we’re not going anywhere. Yes, there is a huge man outside wearing a giant parka who wants to beat your face with a tire iron but hey we’re home for the night. Settle in!
Today, we’re talking about 2012’s Atm which features two guys and a girl trapped in an Atm kiosk booth in the middle of the night as the aforementioned killer wearing an Urban Legends parka stalks them. In the movie, Brian (David Hargrove) has a huge crush on Emily (Alice Eve) and finally works up the nerve to ask her out at a company party on her last day. The best prison shows explore dark stories of criminals in captivity, but also touch on themes of redemption, friendship, and humor. Series like "Buried" offer unflinching portrayals of prison dynamics and survival, while "Inside the World's Toughest Prisons" provides global perspectives. Shows like "Girls Incarcerated" and "Black Bird" offer raw portrayals of the challenges faced by female inmates and the psychological depth of prison life.
Though it might seem like a restrictive setting, the best prison shows showcase the different ways stories can be told about life behind bars. Unsurprisingly, many prison-centric shows are dramas and not for audiences seeking lighter fare. They cater to the dark stories of criminals who are just as dangerous in captivity and the loss of hope and humanity some of these inmates feel. However, prison shows can also deal with redemption, friendship, and even finding humor in such a life.

Expectations can be a funny thing when it comes to movies. Go into a theater with absolutely no inhibitions about what you’re about to witness and you’re likely to have a far better time than if you were watching a sequel you’ve built up expectations for in your mind. Remakes? Forget it. One would wager that the likelihood of you enjoying a remake of a film that you already enjoyed in its original packaging is a considerable amount lower than had you never seen the original. For obvious reasons. This brings me to today’s topic: a 1993 American remake of the French-Dutch film Spoorlos that was attacked by many for being...

On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Is This What I Told Myself It Would Be?
Directed by Marjane Satrapi and written by Michael R. Perry, “The Voices” has a phenomenal trailer — snappy, stunning, and with a hunky Chinese Elvis impersonator! I would know; I’ve seen it dozens of times in the decade since Lionsgate made the movie: a feature that, up until now, I haven’t watched and will be using this week’s IndieWire After Dark to recommend to myself. Let me (us?) explain.

Ryan Reynolds is probably one of the few actors out there with zero haters. From his onscreen characters to his banter with his wife Blake Lively, there is absolutely nothing we don’t love about him. His performance as Deadpool, though, will always hold a special place in our hearts. All in all, Ryan Reynolds clearly deserves all the appreciation he gets.

Xbox’s upcoming first-party game, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, is queued to finally be released this month. With the approaching date, Ninja Theory has finally revealed what kind of specs a PC player would require to even run the game, and some might find them to be absurd.
Hellblade 2 will be released May 21 on PC and Xbox Series S/X.
It has become a trend in recent times for game titles, especially Aaa, to be released without much optimization, and Hellblade 2 seems to take that a step further by demanding specifications that many players would consider ridiculous. It also explains why the information was kept hidden till now and has been finally announced just a few days before the launch.

There's nothing subtle about the cold open that kicks off Apples Never Fall, Peacock's adaptation of Liane Moriarty's bestselling novel. As the chorus of "Unsecret" by Buried rings out, warning listeners of "secrets buried in the backyard," Joy Delaney (Annette Bening) rides her bicycle to the grocery store, where she grabs a bright, red apple and softly tosses it in the air like a tennis ball. Seconds later, Joy's bike lies in the middle of the street, blood dripping from the frame. Joy is nowhere to be seen, but her purchases — apparently, she filled her basket with a dozen loose apples and nothing else — are strewn about the road, forming a makeshift halo around the bloodied bike.

The Grammy for Best Country Song has gone to some of the most iconic tunes ever in the genre. From all-time classics like Glen Campbell‘s “Gentle on My Mind” and Willie Nelson‘s “On the Road Again” to modern smash hits like Lady A’s “Need You Now” and critically acclaimed gems like Kacey Musgraves’s “Space Cowboy,” voters are often very careful and accurate in awarding the very best in country music. This year’s set of nominees is, in my opinion, one of the strongest the category has ever seen, with a mix of Grammy favorites and already-classic country songs facing off.
Perhaps the only song that doesn’t have much of a chance to win here is Brandy Clark’s “Buried.” The track isn’t really a big hit or particularly acclaimed, and Clark will likely fare better in the Americana categories anyway. Still, Clark got six nominations this year,...

Any fan of true crime podcasts will tell you the cardinal rule of staying alive: never get in the trunk of a stranger’s car. You lose the ability to control your location and your odds of survival dramatically decrease once the lid of this mobile prison slams down on your head. But what if avoiding the trunk is no longer an option? What if you awaken to find yourself trapped in the boot of a stranger’s car as it speeds down the highway? Marc Schießer’s Trunk – Locked In explores this claustrophobic nightmare with an intimate story told from inside the rear compartment of a kidnapper’s vehicle. Despite its limiting premise, this German film unfolds at a breakneck pace as a kidnapped woman must use all the tools at her disposal before reaching a final destination that will mean certain death.

There is no shortage nowadays of movies with interesting ideas, but it’s generally in the execution that they falter. Trunk: Locked In is a German film directed by Marc Schieber that not only has an intriguing premise but a fantastic execution as well. The idea is not entirely new. Films like Buried and Guilty have had a go at it in their own ways, but Trunk: Locked In gets the best of both worlds. It has the claustrophobia from Buried coupled with the thrilling investigation by a police officer from their control room, as seen in “Guilty.” The economy of characters allowed Scheiber to experiment with shot composition and weird cinematography that seem inspired by Gaspar Noe. Everything works in this claustrophobic thriller, and the smartest thing about it is the exposition, which does not give the audience too much time to apply their analytical minds to assess the plot.

Autopsy Room Four: A delirious survival horror story that deserves a full-length movie adaptation. Uncle Otto's Truck: A grim and surreal chiller that could make a great psychological thriller. The Man in the Black Suit: A period horror tale that serves as a throwback to Mark Twain's writing.
There are a plethora of great Stephen King short stories that still don’t have movie adaptations, but absolutely need one. While Stephen King’s back catalog includes a lot of great novels, many of the horror legend’s best movie adaptations come from his short stories. The Shawshank Redemption was adapted from a novella featured in the collection Different Seasons, while the author’s debut collection Night Shift included the stories that inspired Salem’s Lot, Graveyard Shift, The Mangler, The Boogeyman, Sometimes They Come Back, and the 11-movie Children of the Corn franchise.
However, although all 66 Stephen King books have their good and bad moments,...
