Yesterday, Sony Pictures was mocked by many for releasing the opening 8 minutes of Kraven the Hunter. It was deemed a "desperate" move to increase interest in the studio's latest Marvel movie which shares a release date - December 13 - with The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim.

While plenty of memorable giant monster movies have come out in recent years, one of the best in the genre ever made, Cloverfield, still doesn't have a sequel 16 years later. Plenty of giant monster movies have come out in recent years, including five movies in the Monsterverse, starring Godzilla and King Kong, as well as media in the Pacific Rim franchise. However, one of the best ever made was Cloverfield, a found footage movie about a giant creature attacking New York City during a night of terror.
Cloverfield references other monster movies while telling a unique, original story about a group of people trying to escape New York without being killed by the main monster. Critical praise was given to the movie's intense, first-person perspective, with the movie also becoming a commercial success at the box office. But despite earning $172.4 million globally against a $30 million budget, and spawning multiple Cloverfield movies,...

The first official poster for Warner Bros.' animated The Lord of the Rings prequel film, The War of the Rohirrim, has been released.
The artwork features the king's daughter, Hera, standing ready to defend her home from ruthless invaders, with her father, King Helm Hammerhand, and the villainous Wulf in the background.
The Middle Earth adventure, which is set almost 200 years before the events of J.R.R. Tolkien's classic trilogy, follows the mighty first King of Rohan as he mounts a defence of the fortress of Hornburg (which came to be known as Helm's Deep) from a relentless siege.
“This is the story of the most powerful king in Rohan's history, someone who defeated his enemies with his bare fists,” director Kenji Kamiyama said in a recent interview. “Why did his lineage have to end with him? I think there is a lesson in hubris there and also for...

Have you checked out the new movie I Came By on Netflix yet? You totally should – it’s one of the creepiest and most thought-provoking films I’ve seen in a while.
The movie follows Toby, a graffiti artist who targets fancy neighborhoods to leave mysterious messages for rich people. But when he breaks into one guy’s house, he finds a prisoner tied up in the basement! Things take a seriously dark turn from there.
The way the movie shows how suddenly dangerous situations can get is so realistic and scary. And when Toby disappears, the intense performance from his mom trying to find out what happened is heartbreaking.
The movie does a great job highlighting real problems too. When Toby’s mom goes to the police, they don’t seem to care because the guy she’s accusing is rich and connected. And it turns out he was preying on immigrants,...

It Follows director David Robert Mitchell’s 80s-set “IMAX thrill-ride” for Bad Robot is shrouded in secrecy. So could Flowervale Street be another Cloverfield spin-off? We look at the possible clues.
We’ve been following the slightly under-the-radar progress of Flowervale Street for some time now. An upcoming film from It Follows and Under The Silver Lake director David Robert Mitchell, it has been shrouded in secrecy for several months, with even that title currently in question.
As more details about the project have emerged, though, we’ve began to wonder: could it be another film in the Cloverfield series? If so, this would place it in a series that has so far included the 2008 original and the spin-offs 10 Cloverfield Lane (2016) and The Cloverfield Paradox (2018).
Let’s take a quick look at the clues we currently have to hand.

No official announcement has yet been made by the BBC or production company Bad Wolf, but that hasn’t stopped Variety confirming, or IMDb listing, that Millie Gibson’s successor as Doctor Who companion will be Andor and Jurassic World Dominion actor Varada Sethu.
Sethu is rumoured to be filming with Ncuti Gatwa on series 15 already, and to fulfil the role of the Doctor’s new companion in all eight episodes of that series. So… who is she?
Cinta Kaz in Star Wars Andor
Tony Gilroy’s live-action Cassian Andor prequel series Star Wars: Andor aired in late 2021 on Disney+. Set five years before 2016 movie Rogue One, it’s about the formation of the Rebel Alliance in opposition to the fascistic Galactic Empire. In it, 32-year-old Sethu plays Cinta Kaz, a member of a rebel cell operating on the planet Aldhani who works alongside her partner Vel Sartha, a cousin of Senator Mon Mothma.

New Line’s new animated movie, The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim, is moving from its April 12, 2024 release date to Dec. 13 next year.
The move stems from a chain-reaction of Warner Bros re-dating today, spurred by Legendary Entertainment’s Dune: Part Two going from Nov. 3 this year to March 15, 2024, which then pushed that financier and producer’s other title, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire from that date to April 12, 2024. Dune: Part Two had to move had to shift on account of the unavailability of its cast to promote during the actors strike.
War of the Rohirrim will now face off on its new December date against Sony’s reboot of The Karate Kid.
The anime feature, directed by Kenji Kamiyama, is set 183 years before the events chronicled in the original New Line Lord of the Rings trilogy. Those Peter Jackson movies, in addition to his Hobbit trilogy,...

Horror movies typically rely on their premise alone, but some great films have successfully abandoned their original premises to subvert audience expectations. Movies like "Audition," "The Tall Man," and "Hereditary" take unexpected turns midway through the story, delivering unforgettable and genre-defying twists. "Psycho" and "Malignant" are prime examples of films that dismiss their initial plotlines to reveal more shocking and horrifying narratives, ultimately enhancing the overall viewing experience.
Some horror movies take a wild left turn at the midpoint, suddenly becoming scarier, funnier, and sometimes more original. Traditionally, horror movies live or die based on their premise alone. Wes Craven’s A Nightmare On Elm Street, for instance, may have benefited from superb performances from Robert Englund, Heather Langenkamp, and a young Johnny Depp, but the idea of a serial killer who can attack his victims in their dreams was the movie’s real selling point. Before viewers got to...

Stephen King takes to Twitter to endorse The Wire 15 years after it ended. King is one of the most prolific authors of all time whose works have been a favorite in Hollywood ever since 1976's Carrie, also making him the most adapted author alive. When he isn't writing his latest story, King is an avid consumer of modern movies and television who frequently shares his recommendations on social media, including some recent hidden gems like the movies I Came By and Fall, and the TV show From.
King is back with another endorsement, and this time it falls outside his preferred genre, though it just so happens to be one of the greatest TV shows of all time – The Wire.
The Wire, man. Nothing better. — Stephen King (@StephenKing) May 28, 2023
On Twitter, King simply said, "The Wire, man. Nothing better," giving his highly-coveted endorsement to the acclaimed HBO drama that ended 15 years ago.

Netflix’s director of U.K. features Fiona Lamptey has exited the streamer after 19 months, Variety understands.
No reason has been given for the move and Netflix declined to comment.
Lamptey joined Netflix U.K. Oct. in 2021 from Fruit Tree Media with a brief to expand Netflix’s U.K. talent roster and scout new IP to adapt for feature-length productions. She previously spent 13 years at Channel 4 and its feature division Film4.
Among the features developed during her time at the streamer are “I Came By,” starring “Downton Abbey’s” Hugh Bonneville, “The Wonder,” which starred Florence Pugh and “The Strays” starring Ashley Madekwe and Bukky Bakray.
Although those films didn’t turn into break-out hits in the same way that Netflix shows such as “The Crown” and “Bridgerton” have, there is yet more promising content to come including Daniel Kaluuya’s writing debut “The Kitchen,” which he penned with Joe Murtagh,...

Christina Hendricks of the TV shows Mad Men and Good Girls has signed on to star in the psychological thriller Reckoner, Deadline reports. Based on a short story by author Rachel Ingalls, Reckoner will mark the feature directorial debut of Nissar Modi, who previously wrote the 2013 horror film Breaking at the Edge and the 2015 sci-fi film Z for Zachariah.
The story of Reckoner centers on an affluent woman whose carefully constructed life is disrupted by a young man connected to a tightly-held secret from her past. I’m not familiar with the source material, but the story sounds interesting to me, and Christina Hendricks is always a good addition to a cast.

George MacKay is virtually unrecognizable in the erotic revenge thriller “Femme,” directed by Sam H. Freeman and Ng Choon Ping. With slicked-back hair and a heavy-handed neck tattoo, the dashing, soft-spoken British actor, well known for his period roles, is transformed into the kind of East London gangster you’d go out of your way to avoid.
Part of what makes MacKay’s character, Preston, so menacing is the fact that he’s deeply closeted. When one night he’s teased in front of his friends by Nathan Stewart-Jarrett’s drag artist Jules — dressed up as Aphrodite Banks — he responds with violence so severe that it shatters Jules’ confidence to ever perform in drag again. The attack emboldens Jules to ensnare an unwitting Preston in an intense sexual relationship with the intention of outing him on the Internet.
It’s not only Jules’ character who trades in drag, explains MacKay.

Neil Forsyth’s The Gold is a true crime drama with a distinctive perspective. As much as it’s about the cat-and-mouse chase between the robbers of £26 million’s worth of gold bullion in November 1983, and the special task force trying to catch them, it’s also about the British class system. Over six episodes (airing weekly on BBC One and available as a box-set on BBC iPlayer), Forsyth tells a story about villains on both sides of the social divide and the entrenched systems protecting those at the top. His London is just as veined with establishment corruption, freemasonry and snobbery as it is with armed robbers, hooky fences and locals who keep their mouths shut for fear of reprisal.
The ensemble drama covers the period from the 1983 robbery, then the largest gold heist in British history, to the investigation and sentencing of select ring leaders. The story, as the newspapers show,...

Potential Cloverfield 2 plot details have been teased by its producer. The upcoming film is technically the fourth in the overall franchise, as the original - which was a 2008 found footage film about a giant monster emerging from the sea to attack New York City - was followed by the largely unrelated paranoid bunker thriller 10 Cloverfield Lane in 2016 and the twisted sci-fi adventure The Cloverfield Paradox, which premiered on Netflix in a surprise release following the Super Bowl in 2018. A new film in the series is currently being developed by Paramount with Under the Shadow director Babak Anvari at the helm.
Recently, SyFy sat down with original Cloverfield director Matt Reeves on the 15th anniversary of the film. While he has been militant about keeping potential spoilers at bay for the upcoming film, he teased that one potential route they could go is a viral horror film inspired by the Covid-19 pandemic.

It’s Labor Day weekend, more than three months after “Top Gun: Maverick” (Paramount) rose to #1 in theaters over Memorial Day weekend, and it’s #1 again thanks to no competition and the September 5 boost of 3 tickets for National Cinema Day.
As for those who didn’t go to theaters, plenty of them selected “Maverick” at 19.99 to download and view at home. It spent the second of what will be likely many weeks atop all VOD charts.
Five of this weekend’s box office top 10 titles are also available on VOD. Also arriving this week are box-office leaders “Beast” (Universal) and “Thor: Love and Thunder” (Disney). “Spider-Man: No Way Home” (Sony), now available as as a lower-cost title, didn’t pop up.
Apart from “Maverick,” the charts again prove a big get for Universal. They own 14 of the 30 slots, including five of the #2 and #3 positions. “Minions: The Rise of Gru” (now...

It’s well-known by now that Netflix has a pretty lenient approach to storytelling when they support exciting filmmakers. You can sense that mentality in their massive productions, like Martin Scorsese finally getting to make “The Irishman,” with a three-hour running time. Or there are the countless smaller projects that run amok and usually aren’t entirely focused in their own right.

I Came By is a tense and exciting new thriller directed by Babak Anvari – and is available to watch now on Netflix. To mark its launch we had the pleasure to take part in a junket – both in-person and virtual – with the talented ensemble, as well as the filmmaker himself. Below you can watch interviews in their entirety with George MacKay and Percelle Ascott, as well as Hugh Bonneville and Kelly Macdonald, finishing off with Anvari. We discuss shooting in London, stepping out of comfort zones as well as delving into the themes of the movie, Hitchcock’s influence, with a sprinkling of Jose Mourinho chat….

The state of the nation is explored in British Netflix Original I Came By, and (spoilers) it turns out it’s in a terrible state. This is a horror/thriller from Under The Shadow director Babak Anvari and it sees disaffected graffiti writer Toby (George MacKay) discover something incredibly disturbing in a house he has broken into belonging to a wealthy and highly respected former judge played by Hugh Bonneville.
Power corrupts. Or rather power allows the already corrupt to get away with murder – in this case literally.
But the ending to I Came By comes with a twist and it’s an important one for the future of these characters, while carrying a message for us all today. Let’s break it down.

Netflix may be undervaluing their latest original thriller from Babak Anvari by unceremoniously dropping it on the streaming platform today, but we at /Film know a solid thriller when we see it and will happily pick up the mantle to sing its praises. Directed by Anvari from a script he co-wrote with Namsi Khan, "I Came By" is a twisty thriller about a young graffiti artist named Toby Nealey (George MacKay) who intentionally tags the homes of the elite, but gets more than he bargained for after breaking into the home of a high-profile judge Hector Blake (Hugh Bonneville) and discovering the truth of his hidden basement.
Now, Tobey has put himself and his loved ones in harm's way, as Blake will do anything to keep his secret under wraps. Netflix describes the film with the tagline "Privilege hides the darkest secrets," which sounds like a no-brainer hit for the streaming juggernaut.
