The network announced Tuesday that the M.I.A. dramas — which last aired in May of 2024 — will return for their fourth and third seasons, respectively, on March 25. (Doc, which currently occupies the Tuesdays-at-9 time slot, will have wrapped its 10-episode freshman run by March 11.)

There is some disappointing news for Bob’s Burgers fans. The winter break is going to be much longer than we’d like.

Bob’s Burgers isn’t back in February 2025. Nor will it return in March or even April 2025. Fox is putting the series on a break, as there are just too many animated comedies now to fit into one night of programming.

This isn’t bad for Bob’s Burgers. It doesn’t mean the series will be canceled or is performing badly. It’s just that there isn’t enough space. The show isn’t the only one taking a break.

Why isn’t Bob’s Burgers coming back after the Super Bowl?

Bob’s Burgers and The Simpsons will continue to take some time off after the Super Bowl, according to TVLine. Family Guy season 23 will premiere on Sundays and kick off the night, and that will be followed by Grimsburg season 2. Then in the 9 p.

Paramount+’s Landman continued its upward trajectory in the first few days of 2025, hitting its best viewing-time mark so far in Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Squid Game had a second straight huge week for Netflix as well.

The Korean hit drew just under 4.6 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Dec. 30-Jan. 5, topping the 4 billion mark again a week after its season two premiere. The series fell by less than 7 percent week-to-week from the 4.92 billion minutes it had for its long-awaited return.

Landman snagged 1.3 billion minutes of watch time in the week leading up to its ninth episode. The Taylor Sheridan series, starring Billy Bob Thornton, has improved its totals in every week since it first hit the rankings in late November.

Two other shows also reached a billion minutes to open the year: Virgin River came in at 1.39 billion for Netflix, and Missing You...

William Shakespeare once said, “All the world’s a stage,” but for Kevin Kline, the stage is a way of life, and his love for theater is vast. MGM+ announced today an eight-episode series order for American Classic, a half-hour comedy series from o-creators Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin (The Prom, Slings and Arrows). American Classic stars Kevin Sline as Richard Bean and Jon Tenney as Jon Bean. Hoffman directs the series, with production kicking into high gear later this year in New Jersey.

The end is in sight for The Conners.

ABC has set a March 26 premiere date for the comedy’s seventh and final season. The Conners is ending with an abbreviated, six-episode run; ABC announced the final season in May 2024.

The show will take up its usual 8 p.m. Wednesday time period for the final episodes. That spot’s current occupant, Shifting Gears, is scheduled to conclude its first season on March 19.

Season seven will bring the series to a total of 112 episodes, an increasingly rare accomplishment for a network comedy series. Only one other current live-action broadcast comedy — CBS’ The Neighborhood — has more than 100 episodes to its name. (Fox’s animated stalwarts The Simpsons, Family Guy and Bob’s Burgers are also long past that mark.)

The Conners — a spinoff of ABC’s 2018 Roseanne revival that was canceled after one season following racist remarks by star Roseanne Barr — has been a solid performer throughout its run.

Exclusive: MGM+ has given an eight-episode series order to American Classic, a half-hour comedy starring and executive produced by Oscar winner Kevin Kline. Jon Tenney co-stars in the series from co-creators Michael Hoffman and Bob Martin.

This marks only the second half-hour comedy series in MGM+’s history after 2016’s Graves, starring Nick Nolte, which ran for two seasons. (The linear channel and streaming service’s other half-hour original was the 2021 dramedy Bridge and Tunnel.)

American Classic had been in the works at MGM+ for more than three years; it was announced as part of the development slate of the platform (then named Epix) on February 3, 2022. Fifth Season has since come on board as studio, with Mar-Key Pictures, Likely Story and Anonymous Content producing.

As last year wound down, the Disney TV empire — counting broadcasters like ABC, streaming platforms Disney+ and Hulu along with cable channels like FX — managed to stave off YouTube in the race for viewing marketshare in the attention economy.

Disney’s brands saw about 11.2 percent of overall TV viewing in the United States, just ahead of YouTube’s 11.1 percent share, per Nielsen’s Media Distributor Gauge for December. Having the most-viewed TV series of 2024, Bluey, which tallied 55.62 billion minutes watched last year, certainly helped. And, in fact, all five of the top five most-viewed series of 2024 — Grey’s Anatomy, Family Guy, Bob’s Burgers and NCIS among them — were all available to watch on a Disney platform.

YouTube, meanwhile, appears to be reaping the benefits by orienting its app as a viewing destination on TV sets instead of just as a second screen for videos. The Google-owned platform claimed...

Streamers in the United States opted for familiar television fare on streaming platforms in 2024, with original series failing to break into the top 10 most-streamed show across all popular platforms, according to a year-end report released by Nielsen.

The Australian children’s cartoon “Bluey” topped out the chat as the most-streamed show in 2024 with 55.62 billion viewing minutes on Disney Plus, Nielsen said. The show is produced and distributed by the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC Australia), with Disney having exclusive domestic linear TV and streaming rights in the U.S.

“Grey’s Anatomy,” the long-running medical drama that airs on the American ABC broadcast network in the U.S., was the second most-streamed show of 2024 with 47.85 billion viewing minutes across Netflix and Disney-owned Hulu plus. “Family Guy,” the adult animated sitcom owned by Disney and aired on Fox,...

Bluey was at the forefront of pop culture discourse for several weeks in the spring, as plenty of adult critics discussed how much the animated show meant to them. Its target audience probably didn’t read much of that discourse — kids under 10 aren’t big consumers of that sort of thing — but they (and their parents) kept watching week after week.

The series never fell off Nielsen’s top 10 streaming charts in 2024 — it’s been a fixture dating back to fall 2022, in fact — and ends the year as, by far, the most streamed show in the United States in terms of total viewing time. Nielsen says viewers watched 55.62 billion minutes of Bluey on Disney+ from Jan. 1-Dec. 29 (the end of Nielsen’s reporting for 2024), coming within striking distance of the all-time yearly record of 57.7 billion minutes that Suits set in 2023.

As was the case in 2023, the top 10 titles in Nielsen...

“Bluey” and “Grey’s Anatomy” were the most-streamed programs of 2024, according to a year-end Nielsen report. The Australian preschool program racked up 55.62 billion viewing minutes on Disney+, while the long-running hospital drama nabbed 47.85 billion across Hulu and Netflix.

Animated series on Hulu took the next two spots — “Family Guy” with 42.44 billion minutes viewed and “Bob’s Burgers” with 36.80 billion — followed by “NCIS” with 35.91 billion across Netflix, Hulu and Paramount+. “Young Sheldon” and “The Big Bang Theory” ranked at No. 6 and No. 7, followed by “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” “Criminal Minds” and “SpongeBob SquarePants.”

Streaming in general was up 10% from 2023, with 12 trillion minutes in total. That equates to about 8.4 billion dates, or 23 million years’ worth of watching.

No originals debuted on the overall streaming top 10 chart. Netflix’s “Bridgerton” led that list with 21.42 billion viewing minutes, followed by the streamer’s dating series “Love Is Blind” with 16.45 billion. Rounding out the originals chart are “The Boys,...

The Big Bang Theory finished 2024 as the year’s “most-binged title” in streaming, according to a new report from Nielsen.

The sitcom averaged 265.5 episodes per viewer on Max, the measurement firm said, or 29.1 billion minutes of total viewing. The long-running former CBS series has 281 total episodes available for streaming.

Coming in at No. 7 overall among this year’s top streaming titles, Big Bang saw 58% of its watch time accounted for by adults 18 to 49.

The “average episodes per viewer” stat refers to the amount of time (with episodes lasting at least 20 minutes each) spent viewing the show. It does not indicate the number of unique episodes seen by each viewer.

Nielsen said it compiled the “most-binged” ranking by evaluating streaming titles with libraries of at least 50 episodes. It counted only the series whose viewers had spent at least one episode’s worth of time (20 minutes) with the show.

Christmas week brought a bounty of viewing to streaming platforms, with eight titles crossing the billion-minute mark in Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Netflix’s Squid Game, however, stood well apart from the pack.

The Korean hit posted the highest single-week viewing tally for any streaming title in the United States in 2024 with 4.92 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Dec. 23-29. Season two of Squid Game premiered Dec. 26.

The show’s premiere week was the best for any title in two years, in fact — since Wednesday delivered about 5.3 billion minutes of viewing for the week of Nov. 28-Dec. 4, 2022. Squid Game also smashed its own previous high of 3.26 billion minutes during season one’s run in 2021. Netflix had earlier said season two set a worldwide record for a premiere week, based on the streamer’s internal data.

Seth MacFarlane and the Family Guy staff just struck a brutal blow to The Simpsons with a bit of scheduling “plagiarismo.”

This February will mark an historic moment for Fox and its Sunday night animation block when, for the first time in more than three decades, The Simpsons will not lead off the lineup of adult animated comedies that owe their very existence to Matt Groening and his team. The Simpsons has long been the cornerstone of Fox and its Animation Domination schedule where shows like American Dad! first found their footing, but The Simpsons now finds itself a step behind the competition as Family Guy slides into first place for the month of February while The Simpsons will have to wait until March to return to Season 36, at which time it will reclaim the first slot from Family Guy.

The Simpsons are being couched for a limited time to make room for the Griffins.

Beginning Sunday, Feb. 16, Family Guy will return for Season 23 and inherit The Simpsons’ 8 pm time slot. It will be followed by the premieres of Grimsburg (Season 2) and The Great North (Season 5), and a new episode of Krapopolis.

Six weeks later, The Simpsons will resume Season...

For the first time in more than 30 years — and only for six weeks — Fox will not lead off its Sunday animation block with The Simpsons.

The longest-running scripted primetime series in American TV history will take a break in February and March. In The Simpsons‘ place, Fox will air the second-longest-running animated series on the network, Family Guy. That show’s 23rd season will premiere at 8 p.m. Feb. 16, kicking off a somewhat revamped animation block.

Also debuting on Feb. 16 is the second season of Grimsburg; the Jon Hamm-led series will follow Family Guy at 8:30 p.m. The Great North begins its fifth season at 9 p.m. that night (though one episode aired the weekend before Christmas), and Krapopolis stays put at 9:30 p.m.

The last time The Simpsons didn’t lead off Fox’s Sunday night was in the 1993-94 season (the show’s fifth), when it aired at 8 p.

The Traitors is becoming more than just a cult favorite.

The competition series opened its third season with its largest viewing numbers to date: It registered 499 million minutes of viewing on Peacock for the week of Jan. 6-12, based on preliminary Nielsen streaming figures. Season three premiered on Jan. 9. (Nielsen’s streaming figures include all episodes of a show, so some of that time came from prior seasons.)

That’s a series high for The Traitors, whose previous best showing in Nielsen’s streaming ratings was 402 million minutes the week after its season two premiere in January 2024. It’s also the best premiere week for any Peacock unscripted series to date and was the top unscripted show in the United States last week across all platforms.

Full streaming ratings for Jan. 6-12 from Nielsen will be released in a few weeks, per the ratings service’s agreement with streaming platforms.

Disney has found a new head of comedy programming for ABC and Hulu.

Suzanna Makkos is joining the Mouse House after six years at Max and Adult Swim. She’ll be head of comedy for ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals, reporting to Simran Sethi, president scripted programming.

“There are few executives with the breadth and depth of experience that Suzanna brings to the table,” Sethi said in a statement. “She is a skilled creative partner with a tremendous track record of developing successful, brand-defining and culturally impactful comedies across both broadcast and streaming. We are elated to be welcoming her to our creative team.”

In her new role, Makkos will be in charge of comedy development and current series at ABC and live-action comedy, adult animation and stand-up specials for Hulu.

Longtime comedy exec Suzanna Makkos has exited Max to join ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals as head of comedy. Makkos will report to Simran Sethi, the president of scripted programming for Hulu Originals, ABC Entertainment and Freeform, who announced the hiring on Thursday.

Makkos was most recently head of original comedy and animation at Max and Adult Swim. Makkos’ arrival fills a comedy role that has been open since ABC/Hulu restructured in October. At that time, Sethi was be promoted to run the combined ABC and Hulu scripted teams, and Erin Wehrenberg, who had been head of comedy for ABC, departed.

At ABC/Hulu, Makkos will oversee comedy development and current series programming for ABC Entertainment and Hulu Originals. That includes scripted series, adult animation and stand-up specials.

As people settled in and got cozy with their kith and kin this past Christmas, sometimes watching classics like Home Alone, A Christmas Story and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation just isn’t enough. Many viewers checked out some newer movies that incorporated action with their holiday theme. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Dwayne Johnson’s Red One on Prime Video became a big hit in homes after its brief theatrical run that grossed $186 million globally. Prime Video’s Red One and Netflix’s Carry-On both had big opening weeks in streaming, with Red One coming out on top in Nielsen’s charts.

Christmas-themed action comedy Red One, which the Amazon streamer touted as its biggest worldwide premiere to date, racked up 2.1 billion minutes of viewing in the United States for the week of Dec. 9-15. (The movie, starring Chris Evans and Dwayne Johnson, also had a short theatrical run, making about $186 million worldwide at the box office.)

Carry-On, meanwhile, scored 1.69 billion minutes of viewing for Netflix for the week, albeit with one fewer day: It premiered on Dec. 13, while Red One began streaming Dec. 12 on Prime Video. The thriller starring Taron Egerton and Jason Bateman is currently in Netflix’s top five English-language films to date (as measured over the first 91 days of release).

Adults aged 35-to-64 accounted for 54% of viewing for the title during the week that ran from Dec. 9 to Dec. 15. The Christmas action flick also stands as the second Prime Video title to surpass 2 billion minutes behind “Fallout.” The apocalyptic dramedy starring Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins saw 2.9 billion and 2.6 billion minutes in consecutive weeks last April.

With Fox’s midseason line-up underway, it’s time to look at how its scripted series have performed this season.

Netflix’s conspiracy thriller The Madness stayed atop the U.S. streaming charts in the first week of December.

The series starring Colman Domingo grabbed 1.48 billion minutes of viewing time for the week of Dec. 2-8, Nielsen says, marking its second week as the No. 1 overall title. The Madness and Bluey (1.01 billion minutes of viewing on Disney+) were the only two streaming shows to top a billion minutes for the week.

Paramount+ continued to get strong showings from Landman — whose 773 million minutes of viewing are a high so far — and Lioness, which hit a series high of 692 million viewing minutes in the week leading up to its Dec. 8 season finale. It turns out that the most recent episode 10, which aired last Sunday night, December 29, 2024, was the last episode for a while. Unless you're a hermit forsaking all media outlets, you know who Bluey is. The beloved Australian animated series has absolutely captured fans around the world, but it goes so much deeper than just a mild obsession.

Thanks to a little help from Disney+, the series has reached global acclaim and has been topping the charts for years. Although a previous report showed Bluey toppled by other animated series, the latest Nielsen ratings share a different story.

Bluey Back On Top

Since 2018, Bluey, Bingo, Bandit, and Chilli have become household names to families (with and without children) everywhere. Things are only going to get bigger and better for the beloved blue dog, as a recent partnership between Ludo and Disney sees the characters making their way to the theme parks, cruise ships, and even a big-screen adaptation.

Of course, being one of the most-watched shows on our screen certainly helps establish Bluey as the top dog.

Audiences flocked to a healthy mix of streaming original content and familiar, older titles during Thanksgiving week.

Nielsen’s latest streaming report, which was delayed due to the holidays, puts Netflix’s The Madness at the top of the charts with 1.3B minutes viewed from November 25 to December 1. The Colman Domingo-led crime thriller series was one of four billion-minute titles during this interval — three of which were from the same streamer.
