Horror legend Tony Todd has passed away at the age of 69. The news comes as a shock to fans of the genre who grew up watching the actor in films like Candyman and Night of the Living Dead. He also lent his voice to several iconic characters including Dracula, Venom, and Darkseid. He was last seen in Michael Leavy’s slasher horror, Stream.

Tony Todd was suffering from a long illness before his death but kept pushing though for his audience. In fact, there are quite a few projects under his name that are yet to be released. According to a scooper, the actor was in an extremely rough shape before his death and while filming his upcoming movie, Final Destination: Bloodlines.

I have very sad news to report tonight. It has been announced that Tony Todd has died at the age of 69. The legendary actor is best known for his roles in Candyman, Final Destination, Platoon, The Crow, Night of the Living Dead, and his many appearances in the Star Trek franchise. He was a massively talented actor whose incredible baritone voice made every project so much better. This is a huge blow.

Todd’s wife, Fatima, told THR that he died on Wednesday at his home in Marina del Rey after a long illness. New Line Cinema, the studio which produces the Final Destination franchise, wrote on Instagram: “The industry has lost a legend. We have lost a cherished friend. Rest in peace, Tony, -Your Final Destination Family.“

He died Wednesday at his home in Marina del Rey after a long illness, his wife, Fatima, told The Hollywood Reporter.

“The industry has lost a legend. We have lost a cherished friend. Rest in peace, Tony, -Your Final Destination Family,” New Line Cinema, which produced the franchise, wrote on Instagram.

Born on Dec. 4, 1954, in Washington, Todd went on to study for two years at the University of Connecticut before getting a scholarship for the Eugene O’Neill National Theatre Institute. His time there helped lay a foundation for his stints at the then-Hartman Conservatory in Stamford, Connecticut, and the Trinity Repertory Company in Providence, Rhode Island.

Prequels to horror movies are a common practice. Based on audience reactions, a filmmaker’s interest, or the production house’s lust for the big bucks, some character or element from the original film is picked up and fleshed out via a story set in the narrative’s past. And the results are always very hit or miss. Final Destination 5 mostly played out like a standalone film and only revealed that it was a prequel at the end, thereby surprising everyone. Paranormal Activity 3, despite its insane box-office run, felt like an unnecessary addition to the franchise. Prey was so good that it almost surpassed the quality of Predator. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist was a huge mess. The First Omen impressed critics and audiences but seemed pretty unoriginal to me. Orphan: First Kill was straight-up bad. Prometheus was lambasted for being an unnecessary addition to the...

You can't cheat death, as the increasingly silly "Final Destination" franchise has taught us. As of this writing, there are five "Final Destination" movies available to watch, with a sixth entry, titled "Final Destination: Bloodlines," due out in 2025. While these films tell different stories and focus (mostly) on different characters, they all follow a similar, dependable format. In an opening set piece, a group of characters survive some sort of major disaster, primarily because one of the survivors has a detailed premonition of the carnage to come. Unfortunately, while this group of main characters survive the initial tragedy, they're still ultimately doomed, because death can't be swayed. One by one, the survivors end up getting bumped off in increasingly elaborate, Rube Goldberg-type ways that look like accidents.

The films are gory and funny, and most of them lean into the absurdity of it all — that's kind of what makes the franchise so enjoyable.

Legendary Entertainment is looking to dip back into the prequel well after giving Dune a prequel series with Max’s Dune: Prophecy. Deadline reports that an origin story for Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim is in the works at the indie studio from Eric Heisserer (Shadow and Bone, Bird Box).

The prequel is part of a first-look deal with Heisserer and Chronology, his recently launched production company with Carmen Lewis, who has signed with Legendary to work on IP and related projects.

The "Final Destination" franchise may be shorter than most of the big horror hitters, but it has one of the best batting averages in a horror franchise. Every movie plays with the formula in cool and interesting ways without the need for easily merchandised iconography. A pair of hot-button Instagram posts from a former casting director-turned-acting coach has once again put the spotlight on whether SAG-AFTRA should enforce audition pay — an entitlement that’s been in the actors’ contract since 1947.

Sources tell Bloody Disgusting that Tony Todd has signed on to reprise his role as William Bludworth in the upcoming sixth installment in the Final Destination franchise.

The horror icon played the enigmatic mortician in Final Destination, Final Destination 2, and Final Destination 5.

The plot reportedly centers on first responders. We’re told that the film digs into Bludworth’s backstory, including a flashback to his childhood that reveals more about his connection to death.

This may be what franchise creator Jeffrey Reddick was referring to in his recent comments that Final Destination 6 “unearths a whole deep layer to the story.”

Resurfaced comments from Seann William Scott addresses pay disparity issues in Hollywood that are front and center in the SAG-AFTRA strike.

Scott, who famously portrayed naughty high schooler Stiffler in the “American Pie” franchise, revealed that his salary for the original 1999 film was only $8,000. The film went on to gross more than $235 million at the box office and spur multiple sequels.

Scott shared with TV talk show host Rick Eisen (via The Independent) that the paycheck was “a lot of money for me at the time” but still led to him taking on additional work.

“I remember afterwards I bought a used Thunderbird for like $5,000 or maybe $6,000, I’m like, ‘Oh yeah, baby,'” Scott said, adding that his salary was maybe even less than $8,000 because “I ended up having to work at the L.A. Zoo as a churro guy.”

As actors speak out amid the strike with allegations the studios have taken advantage of them, actor Devon Sawa is sharing how his “Final Destination” image was once used without his permission.

The original “Final Destination” franchise lead shared in a since-deleted tweet that the studios behind “Final Destination 5” used his image for the 2011 sequel without informing him or paying Sawa at all.

“I never got paid a cent for ‘Final Destination 5.’ They didn’t even tell me I was in it when they invited me to the premiere,” Sawa wrote. “In the first contract for part one there was a section that stated they owned the footage and could use it in the future. I assumed for press. I was wrong.”

Twelve years have gone by since the last time a new Final Destination movie was released – which is way too long without a new entry in an awesome franchise that had a nice “one every three years” pattern going on for a while. Thankfully, Final Destination 6 is in the works. Last September, it was announced that the film will be directed by the duo of Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who previously directed the 2018 film Freaks (starring Emile Hirsch and Bruce Dern) and the 2019 live-action Kim Possible movie. Now it has come to our attention that Final Destination franchise producer Craig Perry has teased that a standout death sequence in the film will be set in a tattoo / piercing parlor!

Mvd Entertainment Group has picked up the North American distribution rights to the darkly comedic thriller Wrong Reasons, which was executive produced by and features Kevin Smith. The company is planning to give Wrong Reasons a digital, VOD, Blu-ray, and DVD release on August 15th.

Coming our way from AntiCurrent Productions, the film marks the feature writing and directorial debut of Josh Roush, who has been working for Smith’s company Smodco for the last decade. The story Roush crafted for his film begins as an ambiguously intentioned masked man kidnaps a drug addicted punk rock singer and triggers a police investigation headed by Detective Charles Dobsonas well as a media circus.

For most horror franchises, a decent fifth film seems to be harder to find than a Necronomicon and usually about as dumb as the guy who’d read it out loud. According to those who have seen Evil Dead Rise (now playing in theaters!), however, it looks like the franchise is now home to the rare fifth entry that actually rules. Hail to the King, baby.

It shouldn’t come as a big surprise to Evil Dead fans because this franchise doesn’t miss. Introducing time travel? No problem. Remake? Kicks ass. Fifth sequel curse? Come get some.

Here's a big piece of news that is both expected and unexpected. Walter Hamada, the former head of DC Films that reportedly left due to conflicts with Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav, has signed a multi-year production pact with Paramount Pictures that begins next year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, he will oversee the studio's mid-budget horror slate for both theaters and Paramount+.

"I am thrilled to collaborate with Paramount Pictures with the singular goal of creating exceptional movies in the horror genre," the producer said in a statement. "Over the course of my career, nothing has been more gratifying than discovering emerging, first-time filmmakers and writers and unleashing their brilliance in a studio setting."

Paramount president and CEO Brian Robbins also released a statement on this new hire, calling Hamada "the ideal partner and visionary" for their company.

That entailed an interactive It-inspired trio of doors labeled “Not Scary,” “Scary,” and “Very Scary,” that featured revolving horror titles. This year, HBO Max is back with a brand new seasonal hub that comes with a different holiday-inspired interactive element.

HBO Max will launch its “House of Halloween” spotlight page on October 1, assembling all its seasonal appropriate films, specials, Halloween episodes, and more. As for the interactive element, “House of Halloween” will feature an interactive tarot card element to help fans pick their next title to stream.
