We're getting closer to the end of the year, which means we're running out of time to highlight some of the most underrated shows of the year. For me, the end of the year is always a good time to look back and show a little love to the shows that didn't quite get the response, viewership, or respect from viewers, fans, and critics that they deserved.
If you missed any of the eight underrated shows of 2024, I highly recommend you give them a try when you have a chance. I guarantee you won't be too disappointed.
For this list, I only included new shows. Of course, there are a lot of underrated returning shows that had new seasons in 2024, but I wanted to share the new shows from 2024 that deserved more love and popularity from fans and critics!
Let's get the list started with one of the best new shows of the year,...

In the last six years, Rapman has gone from making breakout YouTube project Shiro’s Story, to helming his first feature, Blue Story, and then creating one of Netflix’s most successful UK series this year with superhero sci-fi drama Supacell.
With each milestone, Rapman has continued to flip the entertainment industry’s script on its head.
“I didn’t go to film school. I didn’t even go to university, but I lived a lot of life before I was in this film world, so I use that as my storytelling style,” Rapman told Deadline.
Rapman appeared on a panel with rapper LL Cool J as part of Paramount’s “Content For Change” program, running alongside the MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester.

At age 10, Martin was on the brink of stardom, but he narrowly missed out and now embarks on the ultimate adventure in adulthood – fatherhood. Butterfield said: “It’s equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, a universal tale of ‘what ifs’, and I can’t wait to bring it to life on stage for the very first time.” Based on the David Foenkinos novel, the play is written by Barney Norris and directed by Michael Longhurst. Butterfield broke out playing Otis Milburn in Netflix smash Sex Education. Other credits include The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas, Nanny McPhee and Ender’s Game.

Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos recently spoke about the company’s content strategy and commitment to direct streaming. He said some theatrical releases can be inefficient and that Netflix can invest heavily in films without needing box office success. This allows the streaming service to put movies directly on its platform.
Sarandos also noted competitors like Apple have struggled with theatrical releases for expensive movies. Apple reportedly plans a limited one-week theatrical run for its Brad Pitt and George Clooney film “Wolfs” before releasing it on Apple TV+.
The Netflix executive said audiences do not care about release windows between theaters and streaming. This aligns with Netflix prioritizing subscriber access over traditional distribution models. Sarandos emphasized constantly innovating, warning those who protect outdated practices risk becoming obsolete.

Ted Sarandos isn’t losing too much sleep about Netflix series like the Emmy darling “Baby Reindeer” being sued for taking inspiration from true stories.
The Netflix co-ceo said during a keynote address at the Royal Television Society’s London Convention 2024 (via The Hollywood Reporter) that the $170 million lawsuit against the “Baby Reindeer” production is indicative of a uniquely British debate over series disclaimers about being inspired by a true story.
Sarandos said that the debate is “not happening anywhere else in the world” except Britain. He added that the show “is not a documentary” as “there are elements that are dramatized.”
Fiona Harvey, who is the real “Martha” as fictionalized in “Baby Reindeer,” has said the series is a “work of fiction” that has been “very defamatory” to her career. In the series, the Martha character is an alleged rapist and stalker. She has since filed a lawsuit against...

We know Netflix can’t truly be bothered with putting movies in theaters. That it has arguably left some money on the table for movies like “Glass Onion” has been well-documented, and with Scott Stuber out of the picture and now determined to make theatrical movies of his own, Netflix can continue doing what it does best in making streaming hits.
In an interview in the UK on Tuesday, Netflix Co-CEO Ted Sarandos not only did not defend theatrical and the time-tested practices of Hollywood but also said for some films, putting them into theaters just isn’t the best thing for them.
“It’s unique to Netflix that we have enough scale,” Sarandos said at the Royal Television Society’s London Convention (via THR). “We can uniquely spend $200 million on a film and have enough scale of viewership to put it directly on Netflix without trying to recover some...

British television shows have emerged as the biggest hits for Netflix subscribers around the globe. Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos revealed at a recent industry event that the four most popular titles on Netflix between January and June came from the UK. The shows—”Fool Me Once,” “Bridgerton,” “The Gentleman,” and “Baby Reindeer”—together gathered over 360 million viewers worldwide.
Sarandos made the announcement while addressing attendees at the Royal Television Society conference in London. He praised the strength of the British television and film industries. According to Sarandos, factors like robust public broadcasters, training programs for creators, supportive policies, and tax breaks have helped UK productions succeed both domestically and internationally.
Research from Deadline also found growing interest in British entertainment. Streaming of UK movies and shows on Netflix and Amazon Prime Video jumped 40% among US viewers in recent quarters. This increase partially stemmed from strikes affecting new American show development.

Heyman received the contribution to the industry award. “This has been a challenging period for the film and television industries in the UK – we’ve had Covid, we’ve had the strikes and the economy in general has been struggling, to put it mildly. Supacell is a 2024 British superhero television series, created and written by Rapman for Netflix. It was directed by Rapman and Sebastian Thiel, and premiered with six episodes on 27th June 2024.
Set in modern-day South London, the series is about a group of five ordinary black people, unified by family history of sickle cell disease. They unexpectedly develop superpowers and are pursued by a secret organisation who intends to control them.
Supacell features an ensemble cast including; Tosin Cole, Adelayo Adedayo, Josh Tedeku, Nadine Mills, Eric Kofi-Abrefa, Calvin Demba, Ghetts, Digga D, and Eddie Marsan. Since there are so many new shows added to Netflix each month, it's tough to know which shows are the right ones for you. Maybe you start watching a show that's advertised to you or has been popular on the top 10, and then randomly in the middle, there's an instance of violence or nudity you weren't expecting to see. That can often happen with TV-ma-rated shows.
Obviously, before watching a new show on Netflix, viewers like to be as informed as possible on what they are about to spend their hard-earned free time watching. On Aug. 29, Netflix released Kaos, a dark fantasy series that centers on the exploits of Greek gods and other mythological situations. The subject matter alone makes way for some potential content and trigger warnings.

If you thought 2023 was a good year for Netflix shows, 2024 just might have last year beat. The year has already provided new hits like Avatar: The Last Airbender, The Gentlemen, Baby Reindeer, and Emily in Paris, but there are plenty more highly anticipated shows on the horizon. New seasons of Outer Banks, Squid Game, The Diplomat, and more are still to come in 2024.
Although the Hollywood strikes left multiple Netflix shows delayed until 2025, the streamer has confirmed plenty more shows premiering or returning with new shows in 2024. Now that we're heading into the last few months of the year, we're starting to see some big hits coming back to our watch lists and splashy new shows making their debuts.
While fans will surely be anxiously awaiting Ginny & Georgia season 3, Wednesday season 2, The Watcher season 2, You season 5, and more, there's still so much to look forward to in 2024. For now,...

The Netflix model is beyond my comprehension. They make a lot of good shows that don’t get renewed. They make a lot of bad stuff that gets renewed. And they release a bunch of big-budget, middling shows and then forget to market them. If we talk about this year alone, Netflix released 3 Body Problem and Supacell, both of which weren’t all that good, and they have got the greenlight for multiple seasons. Two of the best action dramas of the year, The Brothers Sun and House of Ninjas, have probably been canceled. I don’t know if anybody even knows that amazing shows like Nightmares and Daydreams, Tribhuvan Mishra CA Topper, and Tokyo Swindlers exist on the streaming platform. But the horribly made Heeramandi and Maamla Legal Hai had the viewership that’s necessary to get the thumbs up. I don’t even want to get into the animated stuff.

Netflix’s UK content chief, Anne Mensah, has called on the TV industry to face up to its in-built biases and help allow diverse creatives to “find their truth.”
In a spotlight session here at the Edinburgh TV Festival ahead of James Graham’s MacTaggart lecture, which is expected to focus on the industry’s issues with class, former BBC and Sky exec Mensah said she was “super-hyper-focused” on addressing diversity in UK television.
The Netflix VP of UK Content pointed to shows such as Supacell, which focuses on a group of Black working-class superheroes in East London as examples of how Netflix UK is tackling the issue, and urged the audience to address their own unconscious biases while admitting she held them herself.

Fresh from its hugely impressive haul of nine Emmy nominations for hit Apple TV+ show “Slow Horses,” powerhouse producers See-Saw Films has unveiled a slate of new literary options also being developed for TV.
The British/Australian company, which in recent years has demonstrated its ability to amass acclaim, awards and audiences on the big screen and small, has landed the rights to three pieces of IP, including one that has already proved a hit on stage.
Playwright Benedict Lombe’s epic romance “Shifters” — starring “Supacell” lead Tosin Cole and “The Power” actress Heather Ageypong — is currently in the process of transferring to the West End after a sellout run at the Bush Theater (and with Idris Elba recently joining the play’s lineup of producers). But it’s now also being adapted by Lombe for TV with See-Saw, with plans to take the story beyond the stage play and into a returning series.

Netflix is powering up a second season of Supacell.
The streamer has renewed the series about five Black people in South London who unexpectedly develop superpowers. Supacell, created by Rapman, premiered on June 27 and has been a fixture in Netflix’s internal top 10 list of English-language series since its debut.
Netflix announced the renewal Tuesday on its social media channels.
Supacell has received largely favorable reviews; The Hollywood Reporter critic Daniel Fienberg wrote that “The [superhero] genre is the genre, but the tone and feel that Rapman sets and the characters he builds out are different enough to be worthwhile.”
In an interview with THR, Rapman — who also served as showrunner on Supacell and directed three of the six episodes — said he never thought of the series as a superhero show. “Because I wasn’t trying to call them superheroes, it already took me down a different route. The series focused on a group of five Black people, all of whom share a family history of sickle cell disease. As they develop surprising superpowers, they’re pursued by a shady secret organisation. The series has received critical acclaim and currently sits at 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The news is particularly impressive taking into account Netflix’s habit of cancelling their shows after one season. Then again, Supacell proved to be a chart juggernaut almost immediately, occupying the Netflix top 10 chart in 91 countries, as well as sticking around on the global top 10 list for six weeks.

Supacell has been renewed for a second season on Netflix.
Rapman’s debut TV series is set in modern day South London, following a group of five ordinary Black people unified by a family history of sickle cell disease. They unexpectedly develop superpowers and are pursued by a secret organization that intends to control them.
The show has been a hit for Netflix, one of its biggest to come out of the UK for some time, and has dominated top 10 lists around the world for the past few weeks. It is still sitting in a number of global top 10s several weeks on from launch. Netflix just posted news of the recommission on X.
Supacell is created by Blue Story helmer Rapman and directed by Sebastian Thiel. It stars Tosin Cole, Jessica Magaye, Ricardo McCleary-Campbell, Saraphina Mattis, Melissa Simon-Hartman, Cleo Young and Micheal Ademilua, who comprise the Supacell Six.

That’s your lot. Until the Paralympic Games Paris 2024 begin in a few weeks, the Olympic Games are over. No more hearing your neighbours through the wall cheering on Team Gb in the 400m Relay, no more fun and fleeting national obsessions with background players such as the man who retrieves rogue swimming hats from the bottom of the pool, or the magnificently curly haired official who carries the trays containing the medallists’ posters, and no more wondering where Clare Balding gets her blouses – the closing ceremony has closed.
What that means for UK TV viewers is the gradual return of actual television to the schedules. There’s new Only Connect, University Challenge, Who Do You Think You Are?, Celebrity MasterChef, Celebrity Race Across the World and soon, new Great British Bake Off. If none of that excites you, then this is a great time to catch up on any overdue US imports.

Overall streaming numbers for July 8-14 came down a fair amount from the record-breaking previous week. HBO’s House of the Dragon, however, was virtually even with its prior viewing total — which was good enough to move it to the top spot for the first time.
House of the Dragon amassed 1.27 billion minutes of viewing on Max (not including viewing on HBO’s cable channels), just a smidge below the 1.3 billion it had the week before. With the two titles ahead of it the previous week, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F and Suits, each falling by significant amounts, the HBO show moved up to No. 1.
Suits fell by 28 percent week-to-week to 1.07 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Peacock, which was good for third place overall, slightly behind Bluey (1.08 billion minutes on Disney+) and just ahead of The Boys (1.05 billion for Prime Video), which had its fifth consecutive week over the billion-minute mark.

The Supacell star on channelling his South London roots into a rising career.
“Wolverine is definitely hard to kill,” says Tosin Cole.
He’s been mulling over this. Cole is speaking to Empire during a morning off from filming mystery comedy thriller Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie (written by The Last Of Us’ Craig Mazin), in which he stars alongside Hugh Jackman. For the past few weeks, alongside shooting that, Cole has been promoting his Netflix super-powered drama Supacell while Jackman has been promoting Deadpool & Wolverine. So: the super-fight is on.
Cole doesn’t fancy his chances. “Michael ain’t got no offensive skills,” he says of Supacell’s time-manipulating lead. “Wolverine’s all offensive. Michael’s a very logical person, he’d be like, ‘He’s got three knives in each hand, he can heal himself, he’s very aggressive.’ So I think I’d just run away.

Netflix isn't just reheated Michael Fassbender thriller flops, y'know. Sometimes it's also terrible, nightmarish dating shows. I kid ... sort of. The platform that currently dominates the streaming sphere seemingly got the memo about churning out "content" to combat audience churn early, and has been serving up a bewildering array of media on a regular basis for some time, often looking to international sources for some of its most popular offerings.
For example, Italian thriller "Vanished into the Night" recently proved popular on Netflix, while British superhero series "Supacell" similarly made its mark on the streamer's top charts. These are just two recent examples, but Netflix has, to its credit, been introducing audiences to an impressive amount of international media for some time. 2023 saw Mexican drama series "Thursday's Widows" climb the most-watched charts and now the country has once again contributed to Netflix's mission to entertain us all to death with comedy thriller "Non Negotiable.

The week that includes the July 4 holiday is usually a big one for streaming services — but it’s never been as big as this year.
Nielsen’s streaming content ratings show the week of July 1-7 as the biggest one ever since the measurement firm began regularly tracking streaming several years ago. TV users spent 313 billion minutes on streaming platforms for the week, and for the first time, every entrant in the top 10 overall titles had at least 1 billion minutes of viewing.
The previous biggest week came just seven days earlier, when seven of the overall top 10 crossed the billion-minute mark. Nielsen also says July 7 was the fourth-largest streaming day it has ever tracked, behind Jan. 13 — when Peacock had an exclusive NFL playoff game — and Feb. 17-18, which was both the Presidents Day holiday and had a cold snap keeping much of the country indoors.

In the parlance of the times, The Bear absolutely ate in the week of its third season premiere.
The FX-produced Hulu show had its biggest streaming week to date for the June 24-30 period. The Emmy-winning series, whose third season premiered June 27, racked up 1.23 billion minutes of viewing for the week — beating its previous high of 1.01 billion minutes shortly after its season two premiere last year.
The Bear was one of seven shows to score more than a billion minutes of viewing for the week, a rarity in the four-year history of Nielsen’s streaming rankings. Former Showtime series Your Honor continued its strong run, leading all titles with 1.58 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix and Paramount+. Another Showtime title, Dexter, saw its viewing rise by 84 percent from the previous week to 1.48 billion minutes.

The opening weekend of “The Bear” Season 3 saw impressive viewership on Hulu, though the FX series was outpaced by “Your Honor” and “Dexter.”
As “The Bear” debuted the entirety of its third season on Hulu on June 27, the Jeremy Allen White-led series tallied up 1.2 billion viewing minutes on Hulu between June 24-30, ranking as the week’s third overall most-watched streaming program. However, viewership for “The Bear” was surpassed by both “Your Honor” and “Dexter,” which scored 1.58 billion and 1.48 billion viewing minutes, respectively, across Paramount+ and Netflix.
Though “Your Honor” climbed to become the week’s most-watched streaming program, viewership fell slightly from the 1.95 billion viewing minutes it tallied up the previous week. Notably, both “Your Honor” and “Dexter” are Showtime shows streaming Paramount+ that received a viewing bump after being added to Netflix.

[This story contains spoilers from season one of Supacell.]
Supacell is, in many ways, a love letter to drama, sci-fi, Black talent and south London — but it is not a superhero story.
That’s what its showrunner, Rapman, wants fans to know. The six-part series has stormed into Netflix‘s most-watched programs this month and currently sits in the top spot on its global television list, having accrued nearly 12 million views.
Rapman — or “Raps” as he says he’s known among friends and colleagues — is a quadruple threat. The Briton, whose real name is Andrew Onwubolu, is a rapper, record producer, screenwriter and director. Finding fame on YouTube through the medium of rap, the 35-year-old made his writing and directorial debut with the 2019 feature Blue Story, a musical crime drama that earned international distribution through Paramount. Around that same time, Rapman began concocting a piece of television that asked the question: “What if there was a sci-fi where...
Supacell is, in many ways, a love letter to drama, sci-fi, Black talent and south London — but it is not a superhero story.

Mark Molloy’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is doing the Neutron Dance atop other films in Netflix‘s library for the second consecutive week! According to Netflix, the sequel starring Eddie Murphy in one of his most iconic roles held the top spot on the English Films List with 22.2M views. Nostalgia is mighty when it comes to racking up numbers on Netflix. It helps that Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is fun and features a cast of veteran actors reliving the glory days that helped make them household names. Regardless of the reason, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is a hit, and Murphy deserves kudos for his efforts to make Axel’s latest case a thrilling revival.
A Family Affair, starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King, claimed the #2 spot with 11.6M views. The romantic comedy about love, sex, and identity resonates with a broad audience, making...

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F is still reigning supreme on Netflix.
Eddie Murphy’s latest film spent another week atop the streamer’s Top 10 English-language films with 22.2M views, also making it the most-watched title of the week again. That puts it nearly halfway to a spot on the most popular list, which would require it to beat Glass Onion‘s 136M views to do so.
Second among English-language films was A Family Affair, which continued to serve up laughs with 11.6M views — a far cry from the No. 3 spot, which was Paw Patrol: The Movie with 4.7M views.
On the TV side, things have been looking a bit light since Bridgerton is losing steam as more of its audience finishes the third season. Still, its 2.7M views last week was good enough to boost it to sixth place on the most popular list.

This Thursday, it’s time for investors to Netflix. If it’s also time for them to chill, only time will tell! Much of that will depend on the financial and subscriber trends the global streaming giant reports after the stock market closes on July 18.
Netflix shares have been on a roll this year. They are up around 12 percent since the firm’s first-quarter earnings report in mid-April and up 41 percent for the year to date, compared with a 17 percent gain for the broad-based S&P 500 stock index.
But Netflix management previously guided that its second-quarter subscriber growth will come in below the 9.3 million adds recorded in the first quarter, which had been an upside surprise. It is also likely to discuss the success of the firm’s second-quarter content slate, including such series as Ripley, starring Andrew Scott, Eric with Benedict Cumberbatch, and at the end of the quarter,...

“Love Island USA” has hit its stride.
Season 6 of the Peacock reality dating show was the No. 1 most-watched streaming original series in the U.S. during the week of July 5-11, hitting 919.1 million minutes watched, per Luminate. While Season 6 has consistently ranked on Luminate’s charts since its debut during the June 14-20 window, this has been its biggest week by far, marking a 61% jump in viewership from the previous week and a 257% increase from its debut week. Of course, much of the increase is due to the sheer amount of content now available — 27 episodes had been released by July 11 — but it’s clear that the series’ popularity has seen solid growth over time.
The No. 2 title of the week was “The Bear” Season 3, which hit 630.7 million minutes watched in its first full week of availability on Hulu. “The Boys” Season 4 followed with 471.4 million minutes watched during this window, which...
