Partly. A trapper named Hugh Glass was indeed mauled by a bear and abandoned by his companions, yet he managed to survive in spite of seemingly impossible odds. However, the real Glass had no known children and ultimately forgave the people who left him for dead.

The Revenant is based, in part, on the 2002 novel The Revenant: A Novel of Revenge by Michale Punke. One of the biggest changes from the source novel is the addition of Hugh Glass' son in the film. Glass' son Hawk is not part of the novel but a very large part of the film.

In the tale of real-world frontiersman Hugh Glass battling for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by his crew, much of DiCaprio's screen time is spent alone, not talking, letting us know he is enduring endless pain of both the physical and emotional varieties.
