The musical biopic surpassed All Eyez on Me’s $44.9 million domestic haul on its third Wednesday to become the #14 highest-grossing ever at the US box office. The 2024 release is based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! by Elijah Wald; the film portrays the legendary singer through his earliest folk music success until the considerable controversy over his use of electric instruments at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival.

All Eyez on Me was directed by Benny Boom, and it came out in 2017. The film stars Demetrius Shipp Jr. as Tupac, with Kat Graham, Lauren Cohan, Hill Harper, and Danai Gurira. Jamal Woolard reprises his role as Christopher “Biggie Smalls” Wallace / The Notorious B.I.G. from Notorious. The biopic was based on the life and death of the rapper. The movie collected $44.92 million domestically and $10.74 million overseas.

The series Wayne Brady: The Family Remix features Wayne with his ex-wife, Mandie Taketa, their daughter, Maile Brady, and Mandie’s boyfriend, Jason Fordham.

The group is known as the Core Four, and the episodes focus on the everyday lives of the unique blended family.

One of the topics examined in the episodes included the revelation that Wayne has a baby son, whom he shares with another woman who few knew about until the premiere episode.

Stephen J. Rivele, who shared an Oscar nomination for the screenplay for Oliver Stone’s Nixon and worked on such other biopics as Michael Mann’s Ali, Agnieszka Holland’s Copying Beethoven and Don Cheadle’s Miles Ahead, has died. He was 75.

Rivele had heart issues and died May 17 at his home in Pasadena, California, his son Eli Bocek-Rivele told The Hollywood Reporter.

Rivele wrote on Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star Is Born and did an early draft for another 2018 release, Bohemian Rhapsody, starring Rami Malek as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.

He also handled uncredited rewrites on the baseball movie Moneyball (2011) and All Eyez on Me (2017), about Tupac Shakur.

All eyez are back on Tupac Shakur, whose 1996 murder may be closer than ever to being solved. The same month that marks the 27th anniversary of Shakur’s murder, police have arrested a key figure who was present at the Las Vegas shooting. The exact charges have yet to be released by police.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Las Vegas police arrested 60-year-old Duane “Keffe D” Davis, a member of the South Side Compton Crips (and that ain’t a rap group). Davis has been long tied to Tupac Shakur’s murder, with one book by a former LAPD detective alleging that Davis was paid off by Sean “Diddy” Combs to pull the trigger. Davis would maintain that his nephew, Orlando Anderson, was the one who killed Tupac Shakur.

Las Vegas police have arrested a man in the deadly 1996 drive-by shooting of Tupac Shakur, a long-awaited break in a case that has frustrated investigators and fascinated the public ever since the hip-hop icon was gunned down on the Las Vegas Strip 27 years ago.

Duane “Keffe D” Davis was arrested early Friday morning, although the exact charge or charges were not immediately clear, according to two officials with first-hand knowledge of the arrest. They were not authorized to speak publicly ahead of an expected indictment later Friday.

Davis has long been known to investigators and has himself admitted in interviews and in his 2019 tell-all memoir, Compton Street Legend, that he was in the Cadillac where the gunfire erupted during the September 1996 drive-by shooting. Shakur was 25 when he was gunned down.

The arrest comes more than two months after Las Vegas police raided his wife’s home July 17 in neighbouring Henderson.

Just days after what would have been Tupac Shakur’s 52nd birthday, police have announced they issued a search warrant at a home in Henderson, Nevada, a city that sits under 20 miles outside of Las Vegas, where the rapper was gunned down in 1996.

According to Lt. Jason Johansson of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, “The search warrant that we conducted is in connection with the Tupac Shakur case…It has been a while…It’s a case that’s gone unsolved and hopefully one day we can change that.” As per the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the scene of the warrant appeared to be a tense one, with officers approaching the home with guns drawn. No arrests appeared to have been made.

On June 7, the rapper was honored in a posthumous ceremony hosted by radio personality Big Boy, with Tupac's sister Sekyiwa "Set" Shakur accepting the honor on the late star's behalf. Tupac Shakur is finally getting a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on June 7, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce said.

A star for the late rap legend was previously announced nearly 10 years ago, but according to the Walk of Fame, the family has only now set a date for the ceremony. On Twitter, they said, “For the record, Tupac was selected in 2013, and we have been waiting for his family/estate to set a date.”

Sekyiwa “Set” Shakur, Tupac’s sister, will accept the honor on behalf of Tupac, who was shot and killed in 1996.

Noted Los Angeles radio host Big Boy will emcee the ceremony. Allen Hughes, who directed a number of Tupac videos and the Hulu docuseries “Dear Mama” about Tupac and his mother Afeni Shakur will speak, as will Jamal Joseph, the author of “Tupac Shakur, Tupac Shakur Legacy.”

The Death Row catalog is back on streaming services one year after Snoop Dogg pulled the albums with the promise of building a platform of his own.

Led by Snoop’s first two albums, Doggystyle and Tha Doggfather, the groundbreaking Death Row catalog also boasts 2Pac’s All Eyez on Me and The Don Killuminati: The 7 Day Theory, as well as Tha Dogg Pound’s Dogg Food, Lady of Rage’s Necessary Roughness, and Kurupt’s Against the Grain. The classic soundtracks for Murder Was the Case, Above the Rim, and Gridlock’d are also included.

Last month, the label’s other magnum opus, Dr. Dre’s The Chronic, returned to streaming after its rights reverted back to Interscope Records. The New York-based helmer has a career that dates back 20 years to when he cut his teeth in the music business directing videos for big stars. He has more than 200 credits and has worked with a list that includes Diddy, Nicki Minaj, Eminem, L.L. Cool J, 50 Cent, Kelly Rowland, Fat Joe, Lil Kim, Nelly, Nas and Sean Paul.

He transitioned to feature films and TV while still being a go-to music video creator. Most recently, he has been on a small screen spree, directing episodes of series like Showtime’s City on a Hill, CBS’ The Equalizer, CSI: Vegas, NCIS: Los Angeles and Magnum P.I., NBC’s Chicago P.D. and The CW’s All American.

He’s also known for All Eyez on Me, the biopic of late rap legend Tupac Shakur.

Benny Boom, the television director who has worked on franchises such as “CSI: Vegas” and “Magnum Pi,” has signed with the Gersh Agency for representation.

Boom, well-known for his revered work in the music video industry, has in recent years bolstered his television directing credits with his work on franchises such as Showtime’s “City on a Hill,” “Black Lightning,” “The Equalizer,” “NCIS: LA” and “Chicago Pd.” He also directed the 2017 Tupac Shakur biographical film “All Eyez on Me,” which starred Demetrius Shipp Jr. and Kat Graham. Alongside “All Eyez on Me,” Boom’s film credits include the 2011 action film “S.W.A.T.: Firefight,” the 2009 action comedy “Next Day Air” and the 2016 thriller “48 Hours to Live.”

The Philadelphia native has won awards and garnered billions of online views for his work in music videos. His work on Nelly’s “Dilemma” with Kelly Rowland currently has over 1.2 billion views.

Exclusive: Dallas Roberts (Big Sky), Arden Myrin (Orange Is the New Black) and Harvey Guillén (Reacher) have signed on to star in the comedy Road Dogs, from Bustled Knuckle Productions and Residue Remains Productions, which goes into production in Minnesota this summer.

The film centers around three stand-up comedians who hit the road for a simple weekend showcase but soon find their plans derailed by a crooked club owner and her homicidal bouncer. Vanessa Leigh is directing from her and Aaron W. Bennett’s script, which was based on Bennett’s time as an improv comic and comedy club owner in Central Washington. Exclusive: Actor-producer Cory Hardrict has set Conmen as the first feature to be produced under his Hardcor Films banner, after completing 30% of a $100M capital raise through Veritas Gold Productions’ Perennial Film Fund to support an upcoming slate of 10-15 productions.

Hardrict will star opposite Neil Brown Jr. in Conmen, which is one of four films he intends to make through Hardcor this year. The upcoming feature to be directed by Mike Tiddes will watch as two Black conmen take on the guise of FBI agents in order to rip off a heroin-dealing Klansman and his Sheriff’s son. Brown and Robert McEveety wrote the script. Ryan Lewis is also attached to produce the pic, with Brown co-producing. Hardrict will look to raise the remaining capital for his slate over the next three to four years, in concert with Veritas principals Harold Whitfield and Martin Scruggs.

Exclusive: Producer Steve Whitney and his company Tsw Films have purchased Suge Knight’s life rights with plans to develop a biopic on the infamous music mogul, bringing Nick Cassavetes and Anthony Thorne aboard to write the script.

The former music exec born Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight Jr. co-founded the iconic label Death Row Records in 1991 and is credited with bringing the subgenre of gangsta rap into the mainstream. Artists signed to the label included Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog and Tupac Shakur—and those three acts alone changed the face of hip hop with the release of the groundbreaking albums The Chronic, Doggystyle and All Eyez on Me. Knight’s label had enormous success with over 50 artists and profits of over $100 million a year, but fell into bankruptcy after the departure of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog, the murder of Tupac and the 2018 incarceration of Knight on charges of voluntary manslaughter.

The Umbrella Academy star Tom Hopper and Kat Graham are set to star in Netflix’s Love in the Villa. Mark Steven Johnson will write and direct, with Margret Huddleston and Stephanie Slack producing through their Off Camera Entertainment banner. Johnson will also produce.

The film follows a young woman who takes a trip to romantic Verona, Italy, after a breakup, only to find that the villa she reserved was double-booked, and she’ll have to share her vacation with a cynical (and very good-looking) British man. Production will start this month in Verona and the film will premiere globally on the streamer in 2022.

“Now, more than ever, people need some love and laughter in their lives. Everyone seems so divided these days. But in the end everyone wants the same thing — to love and to be loved,” Johnson said. “That’s what movies like Love in the Villa are about.
