Winning an Oscar is the pinnacle of achievement in the film industry, as it doesn’t just acknowledge your artistic excellence but also makes your peers endorse you and respect you in the filmmaking community. The best part? Box office success is not taken into consideration when it comes to the Academy Awards.

With its shocking story and lively animation, Look Back became a fan-favorite anime film in 2024. Ahead of the 97th Academy Awards, fans were excited to see Look Back making it to the nominations list. To their dismay, Look Back couldn’t make it to the list. This has sparked a conversation about the Oscars’ reservations against anime as a medium.

Such a discussion is important considering all that the anime film offers in a short span of time. For the same reason, the fan reactions are understandable. However, the worst aspect of this entire ordeal is Tatsuki Fujimoto not receiving his due.
Look Back is sad, beautiful, and truly riveting in many ways
Look Back hit the theatres in June 2024, and quickly garnered massive attention from fans. It follows the story of Fujino, a young artist, and her relationship with her craft.

Netflix is kicking 2025 off in decidedly low-key fashion. By its standards, the streamer’s lineup of film originals in January is surprisingly slight. There are still a few Netflix-exclusive movies worth recommending this month, though, and the service is making up for its slim pickings of originals with a batch of exciting streaming acquisitions that is practically bursting at the seams with modern classics from the past 30 years.
In other words, there are still plenty of options for anyone out there looking to stream the first month of this new year away. For help choosing which movies to watch, here are TheWrap’s picks for the best new movies on Netflix in January.

“The Wild Robot” has further momentum for Best Animated Feature after grabbing two additional Oscar nominations for score (Kris Bowers) and sound. This is a first for DreamWorks Animation. However, the sci-fi adventure is in a very tight race with indie sensation “Flow,” which also secured a Best International Feature nomination for Latvia. “Flow” is on a roll of its own, capturing prizes from the Golden Globes, the National Board of Review, the New York Film Critics Circle, the Los Angeles Film Critics Association, and the European Film group. After last year’s win for Hayao Miyazaki’s “The Boy and the Heron,...

Every horror fan has to start somewhere. And while some of us were immediately immersed in scary media from a young age, others were eased into this world of killers and monsters by family-friendly retellings and even cameos. My point is: gateway horror comes in all shapes and sizes, and even as a hardened genre veteran who eats extreme films like August Underground for breakfast, I still believe it can be rewarding to look back on the G-rated frights of yesteryear.
And with the release of Aardman’s long-awaited Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, I think this is the perfect moment to look back on the on the unexpected thrills of studio’s surprisingly horror-adjacent work in Wallace & Gromit: The Case of the Were-Rabbit – a film that borrows heavily from some of the all-time best monster movies.

However, to say that anime and the Academy Awards have a rocky relationship would be an understatement. Every few years, some anime film reshapes popular culture, and Look Back is the latest buzzworthy hit, thrilling fans ahead of Oscars 2025.

Fans can’t believe that some of the most brilliant films of 2024 were ignored by the Academy altogether. Before the 2025 nomination list was announced on January 23, some of these films were the most popular contenders in some categories. However, the Academy didn’t even consider Zendaya’s Challengers, Nicole Kidman’s Babygirl, or Kirsten Dunst’s Babygirl for an award.

Fans have called out the unfair snubs on social media while expressing support for some of their favorite films of the year. These underperforming films had several factors that made them a worthy contender for an Oscar.

#7 Longlegs – The Oscars don’t have a great history when it comes to horror, which makes it less surprising that Longlegs was absent from its nomination list.

“Emilia Pérez” and “Wicked” emerged January 23 as the two Oscar craft juggernauts, scoring seven nominations apiece and setting up a battle of the musicals at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. This matches the seven craft nominations of last year’s eventual Best Picture winner “Oppenheimer.”
Jacques Audiard’s operatic thriller “Emilia Pérez” grabbed cinematography (Paul Guillaume), makeup and hairstyling, editing (Juliette Welfling), score (Clément Ducol and Camille), sound, and two original songs (“El Mal” by Clément Ducol and Camille and Audiard and “Mi Camino” by Camille and Ducol).
Jon M. Chu’s populist blockbuster “Wicked” captured costume design (Paul Tazewell), production design, makeup and hairstyling, editing (Myron Kerstein), sound, score (John Powell and Stephen Schwartz), and VFX.
Sharing four noms were “The Brutalist,” “Conclave,” “Dune: Part Two,” and “Nosferatu.”

The Wild Robot made history for DreamWorks Animation on Thursday when it received three Oscar nominations: Best Animated Feature (Chris Sanders and Jeff Hermann), Best Score (Kris Bowers), and Best Sound. That’s the most bids ever for a single film in the studio’s 30-year history.
“I could not be more delighted,” director-writer Sanders tells Gold Derby via phone from Japan, where The Wild Robot was “on the verge of opening widely.”
“So many people work on these for such a long time, and this sort of recognition is just so wonderful.”
Sanders is now tied with Pete Docter and Hayao Miyazaki with four nominations in the Best Animated Feature category. Sanders previously contended at the Oscars for Lilo & Stitch (2002), How to Train Your Dragon (2010), and The Croods (2013), and is now looking for his first win.

It’s official: Emilia Pérez has emerged as the frontrunner of awards season this year. Not only did Jacques Audiard’s gangster-thriller-musical-character-drama rack up major love at this year’s BAFTA nominations, but it’s the leader of the pack in the Oscar nominees in 2025 too. The film has been nominated in 13 categories at this year’s Academy Awards – including Best Picture, Director for Audiard, Leading Actress for Karla Sofía Gascón, Supporting Actress for Zoe Saldaña, and Adapted Screenplay. It nabbed two Original Song nominations too, going up against itself with ‘El Mal’ and ‘Mi Camino’. As ever, though, the most nominations doesn’t necessarily mean the most wins.
Hot on Emilia Pérez’s heels are Wicked and The Brutalist, each with 10 nominations. Clearly, musicals are pop-u-lar this year. The Brutalist is up for Best Picture, with Director for Corbet, Leading Actor for Adrien Brody, Supporting Actor for Guy Pearce,...

The 2025 Oscar nominations are here! The full list of noms for the 97th Academy Awards have been revealed, and “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist” indeed performed well, given how they cleaned up at the Golden Globes (with four wins for the Jacques Audiard film and three for Brady Corbet’s). And so did that absolute blockbuster juggernaut “Wicked.”
“Emilia Pérez” scored 13 nods, tied with multiple other films such as “Gone with the Wind,” “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” and “Oppenheimer” for the second-most of all time. This is the most noms a non-English language feature has ever received.
“The Brutalist” and “Wicked” each scored 10 nominations, showing the extraordinary momentum they’ve built across awards season — “Wicked” has now grossed almost $466 million domestically. Both Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande received acting nominations.

Kieran Culkin, Conclave, Ariana Grande and more have been nominated for golden men. Here’s the list of Oscars 2025 nominations:
We’ve put on our finest clothing and poured a glass of champagne in honour of the Oscar nominations that have just emanated from the Academy’s chimney.
Among the big names in the running for an award this year are Wicked star Ariana Grande for Best Supporting Actress, Kieran Culkin in the Best Supporting Actor category for his engaging turn in A Real Pain, and Nosferatu for Best Make-Up & Hair. (We like to think that it was Bill Skarsgård’s moustache that swung the latter nomination.)
Fun fact: three of the five nominations in the Best Visual Effects category have primates in. Something for the VFX studios out there should think about if they want a nomination next year.

The 2025 Oscar nominees for the 97th Academy Awards have been unveiled by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and the list of the five films in the running for the best international feature film award includes one first-ever nominee in the category, namely Latvia. Its debutant in the international Oscar race is Flow, an animated feature from director Gints Zilbalodis that follows a flood-displaced cat who must team up with other animals in search of survival and a new home.
Flow is also in the running for the best animated feature Academy Award.
At the Golden Globes, the Sideshow/Janus film vanquished much higher-profile competition — including Dreamworks’ The Wild Robot, Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2, Netflix’s Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl and Disney’s Moana 2 — to win the best animated feature honor.

The Academy Awards nominations for 2025 will be announced on Thursday, January 23, by Bowen Yang and Rachel Sennott. You might have to get up a little early to see the noms, though. That is especially true if you work in the Hollywood film industry.
The Oscars themselves will be held on Sunday, March 2, from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood and the host will be (thankfully) Conan O'Brien. Will he be part of a ceremony that hands out a lot of awards to Netflix movies? Maybe.
One Netflix film seems like not only a shoo-in to be nominated for Best Picture, but likely to win. More on that in a second. Here is everything else you need to know.

Stop-motion films are by their nature some of the most delicate, analog creations that exist in a sharp-edged entertainment universe grappling with the impending impact of AI. This year two of these movies — “Memoir of a Snail” and “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” — are among the frontrunners in a group of films vying for top honors in the animated film category during awards season.
Both films are the result of painstaking work by leading filmmakers, but their journeys have been different. One is the part of a long tradition by a beloved British filmmaking team (Aardman) and the other is an indie film by a lauded auteur (Adam Elliot) from Australia.
Each film and the filmmakers behind them have already made a mark. “Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl” has earned seven Annie Awards noms including best feature. “Memoir of a Snail” has also been lauded, winning the Annecy Crystal Award,...

Annually, Rotten Tomatoes hands out Golden Tomatoes to the best-reviewed movies and TV series from the past year.
Previous winners include Oppenheimer, The Last of Us, Top Gun: Maverick, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and House of the Dragon, but Dune: Part Two has reigned supreme this time.
Shōgun largely dominated the TV side, though there were noteworthy wins for both The Penguin and X-Men '97. Unfortunately, neither Deadpool & Wolverine nor Agatha All Along have received any love, even in the newly created "Fan Favorite Movies" category.
The winners and nominees are determined by an adjusted score formula, which is a weighted ranking that compensates for the variation in the number of reviews when comparing movies or TV shows within a specified time frame.

Roll up, awards buffs: shiny trophy season is hotting up, with BAFTA having announced its nominees for this year’s ceremony. And fittingly, it seems BAFTA members might have gathered in robes to submit their votes on little white slips of paper: papal thriller Conclave is the most-nominated film this year, receiving 12 nods including Best Film, Director for Edward Berger, Leading Actor for Ralph Fiennes, Supporting Actress for Isabella Rossellini, Adapted Screenplay and more. Send up the white smoke, people.
Hot on Conclave’s heels is Emilia Pérez, Jacques Audiard’s genre-defying crime-thriller-musical-character-drama, in which a cartel boss undergoes gender-reassignment surgery to begin her new life. The film is nominated in 11 categories. Audiard is nominated for Director, while the film itself is up for Best Film, Adapted Screenplay, Film Not In The English Language. Emilia herself, Karla Sofía Gascón, is up for Leading Actress, with Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña...

Universal is absolutely towering over the studios and streamers when it comes to this year’s BAFTA nominations.
Thanks to “The Brutalist” (nine nominations), “Anora” and “Wicked” (seven each), plus “Nosferatu” (five), “The Wild Robot” (three) and “Monkey Man” (one), Universal and its offshoot label Focus Features have amassed an astonishing 32 nominations in total, twice that of its nearest competitor, Netflix. The streamer landed 16 overall, led by the 11 from “Emilia Pérez.”
But Universal could have had five more had it not offloaded Coralie Fargeat’s body-horror “The Substance” before Cannes.
Further down, the nascent distributor Black Bear U.K. had a phenomenal year thanks to the 11 nominations for “Conclave”, and three for “Sing Sing.” Black Bear’s total of 12 was two up on Disney, which earned 10, most coming from Searchlight’s “A Complete Unknown.”
