A few weeks ago, Prime Video put out all six episodes of The Sticky, a terrific comedic/crime saga starring the great Margo Martindale as Ruth Landry, a Canadian maple syrup farmer who schemes to steal millions of dollars of maple syrup (it’s loosely based on an actual heist that took place in Quebec). Her co-stars in the show include Jamie Lee Curtis (who also produced the show with Jason Blum), as well as the great Chris Diamantopoulos, who’s been in loads of stuff over the years, including The Office, Silicon Valley, the movie version of The Three Stooges (he was Moe), Red One, and much more. He’s also the official voice of Mickey Mouse for Disney, a role which has netted him two Emmy nominations.

Jamie Lee Curtis is the product of not one but two Hollywood legends and has been a marquee star for decades, but her career is just as on fire (if not more so) now than it ever has been. In just the last couple of years, she’s collected her first Oscar and Emmy wins, and things don’t seem to be slowing down. To promote the debut of The Sticky, her new comedy series on Prime Video, Curtis stopped by The View on Friday (December 20) and reflected on her incredible run on the small and silver screens lately, and she revealed exactly why it is that things are going so well for her right now. “I’m 66 right now, and I started when I was 19 years old, and I have been wanting to be a boss. I’m bossy!” she explained. “And I have wanted to have a bigger...

Universal is looking to Jamie Lee Curtis to pick up where Angela Lansbury left off for the studio’s Murder, She Wrote movie. There’s no deal yet, but Curtis is the studio’s top choice to play Jessica Fletcher in a film based on the 12-season CBS series.
The script is by Dumb Money scribes Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, and Lord Miller and Amy Pascal are producing it. Plans to scope out a Murder, She Wrote film come at a time when whodunit stories are making a killer comeback. Rian Johnson’s Knives Out Mysteries series is a smash hit with audiences. At the same time, other titles like Netflix’s Enola Holmes, starring Millie Bobby Brown as the younger sister of Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill), and Kenneth Branagh’s revival of Hercule Poirot are great additions to the genre’s offerings.

With the Ted Bundy primer covered off (listen), it’s time for Jenn and I to dig into our first Ted Bundy adaptation.
Writer/director Matthew Bright is…an acquired taste. The man behind the Freeway films (which Trace Thurman and I have covered on Horror Queers) has a tendency to blur the boundaries of “good taste” with his mix of comedy, violence, sex and exploitation.
This is certainly applicable to Ted Bundy (2002), which Bright co-wrote with Stephen Johnston. The film is part of a glut of fictionalized true crime films of the early aughts.
In the case of Ted Bundy, there’s a *partial* attempt at covering the real story. Aside from Bundy, all of the names have been changed, but several key incidents, including the Lake Sammamish double murder, as well as the attempted mall abduction, are recreated here.
But Bright and Johnston can’t help indulging in...

The Sticky on Amazon Prime Video is one of those hilarious crime dramas that discusses how things go awry when a normal person commits a crime without any criminal experience. Since they are decent human beings, they assume their plan would work as per their vision. As a result, there are some characters with good ideals who have been wronged by awful people. There are also awful people who want to prove their prowess. The show is loosely based on ‘the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist.’

Here is a factual statement for dear readers: Twelve years ago, Canada saw its biggest heist, the “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist.” If the name brought a hint of amusement to you, along with the usual apprehension one gets from seedy crimes like robberies, then Amazon Prime’s “The Sticky” (season 1) would be the perfect choice for you. The “Fargo”-coded dark comedy, featuring a motley crew of characters portrayed by an equally diverse cast, is maddeningly hilarious and delightfully entertaining. With half-an-hour-a-piece six episodes, the season zooms through its cold crime-drama premise with oddly fitting circumstantial humor and zany dialogues. All signs of a great dark comedy.

Amazon Studios’ new Prime Video series The Sticky got a hopeful update on a potential Season 2 thanks to one of its leading stars.
The six-episode half-hour-long dramedy, which is vaguely based on a real-life heist, follows the story of Margo Martindale’s maple syrup farmer Ruth Landry, who, with the help of Chris Diamantopoulos’ Mike Bryne and Guillaume Cyre’s Remy Bouchard, steal $18 million worth of maple syrup.
The series has been received well so far, and it currently has an 82% critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

As each episode of “The Sticky” declares, Prime Video’s twisted comedy series about a maple syrup heist in Canada, is definitely not accurately depicting the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist. But can you blame creators Brian Donovan and Ed Herro for hearing an event title like that and wanting to let their imaginations run wild?
Across six episodes (and it deserved eight!), “The Sticky” presents an excellent case for television taking completely wild liberties with true events. With that episodic disclaimer explicitly absolving the showrunners of misinforming viewers, they’re essentially creating an original story based on a fun idea. So what if that idea happened in real life, but differently? What if it went this way instead?
The final episode, written by Donovan and Herro and directed by Michael Dowse, sees Ruth (Margo Martindale), Mike (Chris Diamantopoulos), and Remy (Guillaume Cyr) finally follow through on their big plans,...

Hundreds of millions of dollars worth of maple syrup. A vindictive bureaucrat. One pissed off farmer. It may not sound like the high-stakes elements of an action-packed and lucrative heist, but that’s what makes The Sticky so appealing… and funny.

When you ask the creators of “The Sticky” what led them to their comedic adventure series about a maple syrup heist gone wrong, they have two words: dumb luck.
“My sister happened to marry a Canadian. If that didn’t happen, we’d all be in a different room somewhere,” co-creator Brian Donovan told TheWrap. Over cheese and crackers one Christmas, Donovan first heard of the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist, a very real theft that happened between 2011-12 when roughly $18.7 million Canadian dollars’ worth of syrup was covertly stolen from a storage facility in Quebec.
“I immediately texted Ed [Herro] and we got working within a week, because it’s such a great story,” Donovan said.
But to make their Prime Video series, the duo needed to rewrite history a bit. “The real crime was pretty boring. They just very slowly and methodically stole syrup, and got caught. That’s not great TV,...

It’s nearly impossible to have lived a life untouched by a Chris Diamantopoulos performance. The Toronto-born star has been active in the industry for decades, and across all genres. He’s played the male lead in Waitress on Broadway, opposite composer Sara Bareilles. He’s shown up in dramas like The Boys in the Boat and Daisy Jones & The Six. You’ve heard him in animated shows for kids (Hamster & Gretel), adults (Harley Quinn) and everyone in between (Animaniacs). Why do we watch horror movies? Well, I for one, do not! I’m way too scared, thank you very much. But why do others enjoy them? I’d guess brain damage but scientists claim it’s to experience true fear from a safe environment. Put more grandiosely: it’s a way to deal with our own mortality.
The horror genre is alive and well, but let me posit that true crime is our generation’s new horror. Everywhere you look, today’s audiences are grappling with their mortality through books, documentaries, podcasts, movies or television shows.
And it is that final arena, TV, in which I found myself embedded when I co-created The Sticky (along with Brian Donovan). Inspired by the true crime dubbed, “The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist” in which scofflaws from The Great White North absconded with almost $20 million (Cad) of the sweet stuff.

It could be said that The Sticky, directed by Michael Drowsy and Joyce Wong, is loosely based on the great Canadian maple syrup heist that took place between 2011 and 2012. Now, the reason why I say that it’s loosely based on it is because, apart from the main conflict, i.e., gallons of maple syrup being stolen from the warehouse of the maple syrup federation, almost everything else in the series has been changed. A few issues, like the kind of problems the farmers encountered in their daily lives and how they did not like the rules and regulations set by the maple syrup federation, actually happened in real life too. But apart from that, the creators have taken utmost creative liberty, and it wouldn’t be wrong to say that they have weaved a fictional story around a real-life event. So, let’s find out what actually happened during...

The Sticky’s ending was centered around the success or failure of the maple syrup heist being conducted by Ruth, Remy, and Mike at the Association’s warehouse. Leonard was putting maple farmers out of business by controlling the market and shutting down farms by invoking the rules and regulations, which were also probably manipulated by him. Ruth was a victim of Leonard’s crony capitalism, and she was concerned that once she ran out of money, she wouldn’t be able to look after her comatose husband, Martin. So, she wanted revenge. Remy had dedicated years of his life to the aforementioned warehouse as its sole security guard and hadn’t seen a sliver of a promotion. He was already selling Leonard’s maple syrup on the side, but he wanted to hit it big. Mike just wanted to leave Quebec and prove his worth to the Devaney crime family in Boston.

When most casual true crime fans think of Ted Bundy, the image of a smiling and distinguished young man comes to mind. Maybe he’s wearing a bow tie or ’70s-style sweater. Maybe he’s making a strenuous argument in court or laughing with journalists while proclaiming his innocence. Maybe he’s played by a handsome actor known for romantic comedies and Disney Channel fare. This serial killer has a strangely sanitized reputation considering he’s confessed to the gruesome murder of 30 young women and girls.
In the latest episode of Bloody FM’s Murder Made Fiction, Jenn walks Joe through Bundy’s numerous crimes from home invasions in the Pacific Northwest to his shocking assault on the Chi Omega house in Tallahassee, Fl.

Plot: A comedy-drama series about Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer who, in defiance of a heartless system, assembles a team to undertake the Canadian heist of the century. The target: the country’s multi-million dollar maple syrup surplus.
Review: It goes without saying that the last decade has been a boon for true-crime fans. The holidays are for one thing and one thing only: TV. No disrespect to food and family, but when else in the year do we have close to a week of uninterrupted screen time that doesn’t involve spreadsheets or whatever it is other people do at work? Not only is December a great time to catch up on all the shows you’ve been meaning to get to this year, but a month with its own impressive lineup of new shows premiering consistently throughout.
With Disney+ dropping a new Star Wars series and Max premiering “Creature Commandos,” big franchises maintain their presence as the year closest out — not to mention the massive franchises unpacked in Peacock’s “Girls Gone Wild: The Untold Story” and Prime Video’s “Glitter and Greed: The Lisa Frank Story.” It’s quite a month for big stars on the small screen, like Keira Knightley...

Placing a “based-on-a true story” dark comedy in the snowy north carries with it some heavy connotations. The success of the Coen Brothers 1996 film Fargo, and its subsequent prestige television series on FX had mostly staked out this setting as their playground. However, The Sticky looks to needle into the setting while opening up the location. Who thought stealing syrup could be such a fruitful world to explore? With an excellent performance from (character actress) Margo Martindale leading the small ensemble, The Sticky scratched an itch for small-time heists. The Prime Video series maintains momentum and silliness despite intense moments of violence. This helps make the admittedly absurd story shine, despite the inclusion of some tired tropes.

Prime Video’s newest release, “The Sticky,” transforms an impossible true crime into a wonderfully inventive narrative. It is a deliciously dark comedy thriller. The series, which premieres on December 6, delves inside the freezing world of Quebec’s maple syrup business, crafting a ridiculous and captivating story.
Inspired by the true-life Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist of 2011-2012, in which actual robbers took millions of dollars worth of syrup from strategic reserves, the show brazenly announces at the outset of each episode that this is “absolutely not the true story.” This humorous disclaimer sets the tone for a series that joyfully deconstructs reality while creating something uniquely amusing.
The original crime, which resulted in the disappearance of more than $24 million in maple syrup, was already unbelievable. Prime Video’s adaptation transforms that kernel of truth into a narrative about desperation, dignity, and an unexpected group of maple syrup bandits. Set in the early 2000s,...

On Sunday, Nov. 24, Prime Video hosted a screening and panel discussion for “The Sticky” at The Whitby Hotel Screening Room in New York. The series premiere was shown on the big screen for the packed audience, which was made up of members of the Screen Actors Guild Awards nominating committee. Following the episode, journalist Esther Zuckerman moderated a chat with actress Margo Martindale. An intimate reception capped off the evening, complete with drinks and hors d’oeuvres.
From showrunners Ed Herro and Brian Donovan, “The Sticky” is inspired by the true story dubbed the “Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist.” Martindale, a three-time Emmy winner for “Justified” (2011) and “The Americans” (2015 and ’16), plays Ruth Landry, a tough, middle-aged maple syrup farmer. Per Prime Video, Ruth “turns to crime when the bureaucratic authorities threaten to take away everything she loves. Amazon Studios' upcoming series The Sticky is a ridiculous show loosely based on an even more ridiculous real-life heist.
In 2012, it was discovered that 9,571 barrels of maple syrup (valued at roughly $18.7 million) had been stealthily stolen over several months.
Now, The Sticky is here to spin a Hollywood take on those events in television format. The story is led by Guillaume Cyr (Remy Bouchard), Mago Martindale (Ruth Clarke), and Chris Diamantopoulos (Mike Byrne).

When Jamie Lee Curtis rings you up with an offer to take a part she was supposed to play, it might be normal to wonder if it was a crank call. But when Margo Martindale had this happen to her, she did her best to hear her out. Speaking in a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Martindale shared the story of how she came to land the lead role of Ruth Landry in Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming limited crime comedy series “The Sticky.”
“[Curtis] said, ‘I was going to do this, but I can’t, and I thought the only person that reminds me of me is you,’” said Martindale. “I wanted to say, ‘In what world?’”
Despite not knowing Curtis personally, Martindale was willing to give her the benefit of the doubt and read the script, but Curtis wasn’t keen to wait for a response.

"This is our chance... to show 'em who's boss!" Prime Video has unveiled an official trailer for a new comedy crime / heist thriller series called The Sticky, which will be streaming starting in December later this year. It's inspired by the true story known as the "Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist" - which really happened in 2011 & 2012. Officially, according to the numbers, it is the "most valuable heist in Canadian history!" How dare anyone steal that precious liquid gold. "Mayhem, murder, and maple syrup." The Sticky is a comedy-drama series about Ruth Landry, a maple syrup farmer who, in defiance of a heartless system, assembles a team of misfits to undertake the Canadian heist of the century. The target: the country's multi-million dollar maple syrup surplus. The acclaimed Margo Martindale stars as Ruth in this, with a series cast featuring Chris Diamantopoulos, Guillaume Cyr, Guy Nadon, Gita Miller, Mickaël Gouin, and Suzanne Clément.
