- 12-year-old Charlotte lives in a dilapidated apartment building with her overworked step-father, Ethan, her mother and infant half-brother. Due to isolation from the rest of the family, Charlotte is often left to her own devices while struggling to bond with Ethan over her love for comic books.
One night, Charlotte stumbles upon a tiny spider hatched from a strange, glowing object that crash-lands in her great-aunt's apartment. Intrigued by the spider, Charlotte decides to keep it as a pet, naming spider Sting. As Charlotte cares for Sting, the spider begins to grow at an alarming rate. She initially keeps its size a secret, but Sting becomes more difficult to hide as Ethan and the apartment's tenants start to notice strange occurrences around the building. The spider's growing size and insatiable appetite soon lead to the death of pets and other residents. Meanwhile, Charlotte's relationship with Ethan becomes strained over the reality that her biological father has abandoned Charlotte. During a heated argument, Sting attacks both Ethan and Charlotte's mother while she is nearby oblivious with her half-brother.
The tension escalates when Sting, now gigantic, traps several residents in the building using mimicked sounds to lure them to their deaths. Charlotte, accidentally learning the spider's weakness from her grandmother, resorts to finding her captured family. As Charlotte saves Ethan, they face numerous obstacles, including the spider's intelligence and adaptability. During a showdown in the building's basement, Sting attacks the group, but Charlotte manages to lure it into a trap with the help of Ethan. Using a trash compression device, they finally destroy Sting, but not without sustaining significant losses.
