For a while, it felt like Phil Lord and Chris Miller could do no wrong. The directing duo broke into movies with the surprisingly wonderful animation “Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs,” followed it up with the genuinely hilarious “21 Jump Street” (and later, its equally hilarious sequel), and then made a massive, subversive, franchise-starting hit with “The Lego Movie.” Plus they produced a couple of acclaimed TV shows too, with “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “The Last Man On Earth.”
It led to Lord & Miller landing one of the most sought-after jobs in Hollywood — directing the Han Solo-centric “Star Wars” spin-off, with the pair beginning shooting earlier this year with a killer cast including Alden Ehrenreich, Donald Glover, Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, Thandie Newton and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Last night, Hollywood rolled out the red carpet to celebrate the best in television with the Emmy Awards. It was your usual evening of A-list celebrities basking in the glow of their accomplishments (full winners list here), however, what everyone seems to be talking about this morning is one huge, sour joke that is leaving a bitter taste in the mouth.

Will viewers remember this year’s Emmy ceremony more than last year’s? Probably not, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a good one. Stephen Colbert was arguably better than Jimmy Kimmel’s pre-Oscars stint a year ago, there were a number of impressive upsets (Holy Ann Dowd!) and, for the most part, the winners were incredibly worthy of their just rewards (just don’t get us started on “The Voice” over “Drag Race” in Reality-Competition).

The best TV show of 2016? Hands down for us it was Donald Glover’s “Atlanta” on FX, a series we described as “the most audacious, confident, visually striking and instantly quotable show of the past year.” So, it was rather heartbreaking to hear when Glover, who also has a music career, said he was busy and there probably wouldn’t be a second season of “Atlanta” any time soon. However, that’s changed. At the recent TCA conference, Glover, in attendance said more “Atlanta” is coming and he boldly predicted the new version will eclipse the first season.

Donald Glover took the equivalent honor at the Golden Globes, but was snubbed without a nomination at the SAG Awards as was every actor from “Atlanta.” “Transparent’s” Jeffrey Tambor has won this category for the past two years and could easily take it again. We’re betting on Glover, but Tambor could snag the three-peat. [Updated July 27]

“Transparent’s” Jill Soloway, the winner in this category the past two years, was shockingly snubbed this time around, but this has always been Donald Glover‘s to lose anyway. The “Atlanta” star, director and writer earned a DGA Award nod for the same episode losing to an episode from the previous “Veep” season, and the series could take Writing and overall Series Emmys as well. Glover is also assisted by the fact that “Veep” and “Silicon Valley” embarrassingly split up the other five slots in this category.

Academy Invites Massive 774 Member Class Including Gal Gadot, Jordan Peele, Chris Pratt, Betty White
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced its 2017 member class and it’s a big addition. 774 candidates have been invited from 57 countries, and they include some names with little film experience as the Academy continues on its mission to diversify its overall membership. This year’s class arguably includes more comedy actors, writers and directors than ever before.
Some of the notable invitations to the actors branch include Gal Gadot, Donald Glover, Channing Tatum, Chris Pratt, Amy Poehler, Leslie Jones, John Cho, Monica Bellucci (who appears to have been invited in previous years), Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jon Hamm, Dwayne Johnson, Anna Farris, and Sarah Paulson.

Tim Burton’s cinema is one of outcasts and misfits trying to find their place in the world, yet as the director has become more firmly ensconced in the blockbuster machine, his films have lost their uniquely strange, soulful personality; they now resemble gigantic, CGI-ified products stamped with a consumer-grade version of his eerie eccentricity. Such, alas, continues to be the case with “Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children,” a by-the-books Ya affair that resembles “X-Men: First Class” retrofitted for the tween Hot Topic set.

Named by The Hollywood Reporter as one of the top 25 film schools in the country, the Savannah College Of Art & Design grows in stature year by year. The annual Savannah Film Festival—which we attended last month—is the rare event that almost seamlessly marries the glitz of the red carpet with the serious aspirations of the student body. Attending filmmakers and actors often provide masterclasses to students, while the intimacy of Savannah's festivities provide accessibility that larger festivals in bigger cities don't often provide. It's against that backdrop that organizers and officials at Scad once again brought Hollywood flavor to Georgia. Over the weekend, Lee Daniels delivered the fall commencement address at Scad (which you can view on page two) where he also received an honorary degree. It was undoubtedly a proud moment for the filmmaker who also took some time out of his busy schedule on the weekend to talk with The Playlist.

Silent films made a slight comeback in 2012 when The Artist won Best Picture and director Michel Hazanavicius won Best Director. But since then, we haven't heard much about his forthcoming projects. In early 2012, it was reported the French filmmaker was going to direct a remake of Fred Zinnemann's 1948 film The Search, the story of a Czech mother looking for her son after surviving a concentration camp. However, the director was moving the story to contemporary "war-torn" Chechnya instead of the period World War II setting. Now we've learned Hazanavicius has secretly been shooting the film since August. Cineuropa (via The Playlist) reports the film has been shooting in the country of Georgia and production will move to Paris soon. In addition, Hazanavicius' wife and beautiful French star of The Artist, Bérénice Bejo, has been confirmed to play the lead, a woman who works for a non-governmental organization in the area.

The YouTube Original Channel will release Player Vs. Pain, a video game competition that lies somewhere between Major League Gaming and Distraction. The premise of Player Vs. Pain is simple: top gamers, many of whom will be affiliated with the Machinima network, must compete in various video game challenges while being subjected to painful "tortures" as rewards for their virtual successes. For example, one episode will require Halo players to endure a paintball shot to the body for each in-game kill, while another will reward Tetris players by waxing some of their hair off for each line they clear. It's like a sick mix of typical Machinima fare and operant conditioning. Pereira's previous web efforts through Super Creative include...

While cities like Toronto, Venice, Telluride, New York and London tend to get the most shine when it comes to the festival season, down in Georgia, the fifteen years young Savannah Film Festival is continuing to build into an enticing spot on the fall calendar. And this year they have rolled out an impressive list of screenings and guests. The Playlist spent the weekend at the still-ongoing festival, which opened with "Silver Linings Playbook" and was followed the next evening by "Flight," with star John Goodman and writer John Gatins in attendance. They were honored with the Outstanding Achievement in Cinema Award and Spotlight Award respectively prior to the highly buzzed screening, and afterward we sat down with each of them to quickly chat about the movie. The film follows the saga of Whip Whitaker, played by Denzel Washington, a pilot who manages a spectacular, life-saving landing during a plane crash,...

Ti West is attached to direct horror thriller The Sacrament.
The writer and director, who made his directorial debut with the unfortunate Cabin Fever 2: Spring Fever, has made quite the impression with his past two features, The House of the Devil and The Innkeepers, both of which were critical successes.
Details on The Sacrament are scarce, but it’s more than likely the film will follow similar themes and subjects seen in his previous work, including the segments he contributed to V/H/S (read our review here) and The ABCs of Death, due to premiere at the 37th annual Toronto International Film Festival.
The Sacrament will be financed by Worldview Entertainment and produced by fellow writer and director Eli Roth (Hostel), who recently made his love of West’s work clear:

On paper, “Wanderlust” probably looks like your standard high concept romantic comedy. Jennifer Aniston and Paul Rudd are two New Yorker’s displaced by job loss who decide to go on the road and figure out what to do with their lives. They wind up on a rural commune called Elysium where the conventions of modern living and societal standards have been thrown out the window. Hijinks ensue. But for those in the know who’ve been following the career of David Wain and his group of pals since they first turned heads on the MTV sketch comedy show "The State" in the mid-‘90s, the humor of “Wanderlust” is probably a little bit stranger than your standard rom-com. Wain’s comedic sensibilities stray a little more towards the avant-garde than modern movie audiences might expect.
