The quality of YouTube's ad inventory has been a recurring refrain in 2017. Earlier in the year, brands engineered a boycott after learning that some of their spots ran next to videos from extremist groups. Then, in November, the presence of inappropriate, ad-enabled content intended for children triggered the suspension of more YouTube-based campaigns.
One of YouTube's responses to these controversies, according to a report from Business Insider, is a price hike. Sources say the video site will ask brands to commit more money to purchase exclusive space next to vetted content.
Business Insider's report, citing "people in the advertising industry who work with YouTube, help place ads on websites, or buy inventory for advertisers," said that the going rate for spots in the reserved media tier could go up by as much as 20%. In return, YouTube will ensure that the placements those clients pay for will come on videos that...

You may have read about review embargoes on big movies. But what are they, and how do they actually work?
If you’re social media inclined, then you may see ahead of the release of big movies a conversation going on as to when the ‘review embargo’ is going to drop. Furthermore, the timing of a review embargo then has a habit of being translated into an audit of how confident a studio is of a particular production.
But built into this is an inherent assumption about what embargoes are, and what they’re for. Appreciating, therefore, that many of you will know lots of this already, I did think it was worth mapping out the ins and outs of the embargo, and just who it’s for. Because it’s one of those things where one size doesn’t really fit all.

On Wednesday’s “Late Late Show,” Kim Kardashian told James Corden which of her famous sisters is the least fashionable. In return, the CBS host told her which of them he dislikes the most. All the insults were part of the late-night show’s “Spill Your Guts or Fill Your Guts,” in which one must answer a highly personal question to avoid eating something disgusting, like bull penis. To steer clear of drinking a glass of bird saliva, Kim labeled Khloe Kardashian as the family’s worst-dressed. To avoid the same fate, Corden actually answered her query about his “least favorite” member of her.

According to a recent press release, the website is launching a pilot program in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Australia in which users can submit their intimate images. In return, Facebook can prevent the same photo from being uploaded to the site again. In Australia, users are asked to fill out an online form on the eSafety Commissioner's website and are then asked to send the pictures to themselves on Messenger while the Commissioner's office alerts Facebook. Among all of the settings that I’ve come across in gaming of all kinds, one of my personal favorites is the feudal age of Japan. From the beautiful architecture and manicured gardens to the subterfuge, suppuku and all out war, it’s a time and place filled with intrigue and potential, especially from the perspective of a Westerner. Relatively few tabletop games have captured this theme, but The Legend of the Five Rings Collectible Card Game (Ccg) is set in exactly such a setting (called Rokugan) and has been a popular alternative to Magic: The Gathering for many years.
Recently however, due to its acquisition by Fantasy Flight Games, The Legend of the Five Rings has been reimagined as a Living Card Game or Lcg. Unlike a Ccg which is expanded using blocks of booster packs (alongside starter packs and so on), Lcg’s are expanded in large expansions that remain tournament legal indefinitely.

When Rhonda Casto set out on March 16, 2009, for a hike with her boyfriend, her family had no idea the day would transform into a nightmare — one that ended with Casto’s lifeless body at the bottom of a steep ravine.
The plan was for Casto, a 23-year-old aspiring model, to walk the popular Eagle Creek Trail along Oregon’s Columbia River Gorge accompanied by her boyfriend, Steve Nichols.
Casto handed their 9-month-old, Ava, to her mother that morning and she and Nichols headed off.

The latest stars to dig into their pockets on behalf of the victims are Stephen Colbert and Nick Kroll, and their donations are coming with a humorous twist. When Nick appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert this week, the two kicked off the #PuberMe campaign, asking celebrities to share the most awkward pictures from their pubescent years, all in the name of good old-fashioned charity. In return for exposing their embarrassing snaps, Stephen will donate money to Puerto Rico hurricane relief through his charity, the AmeriCone Dream Fund, and Nick will match each donation. So far, many celebs - from Sarah Silverman to Jimmy Kimmel - have happily posted their acne-ridden, brace-face pictures, and they're beyond entertaining. RelatedHere's How You Can Help the...

Malala is a living example of how this can be achieved. One moment a 15-year-old Malala was riding in her school bus in Pakistan, and the next she was waking up alone in a hospital in England. She had been shot by a Taliban gunman in an attempt to silence her encouragement of education for girls.

It has been a long road to get Stephen King's The Dark Tower to the big screen. There's been a lot of hiccups along the way, but even when it finally went into production, the film was still plagued with problems.
Before I go on, I have to say that I love what I've seen in the trailer for the film and I'm excited about seeing it. I especially like the fact that the movie will serve as a sequel to the books. I have no idea what the finished product of the film will look like, but I hope these reports aren't any indication that it's going to be a hot piece of trash. I hope the movie ends up being as awesome as it looks, but we'll just have to wait and see.

It’s no secret that The Dark Tower is held up as Stephen King’s greatest achievement.
Spanning multiple genres and fantastical worlds, the King classic is an eight-part saga that began life in 1982 with The Gunslinger, and after years of false starts and scrapped plans, we’re now teetering on the edge of Sony’s big-budget adaptation. And though the film’s long, meandering journey to the silver screen is public knowledge, we’re now learning that The Dark Tower was plagued by red tape all throughout production, as Sony Pictures, Stephen King, Media Rights Capital (Mrc), and director Nikolaj Arcel allegedly clashed over story concerns and restrictive vetos.
Variety has the report. Citing the old “too many cooks” adage, the outlet claims that while The Dark Tower has all the trappings of a blockbuster movie franchise – two bankable leads in Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba; cutting-edge visual effects...

Given that, you’d have to imagine how getting to portray the character of Malcolm Merlyn across five years on hit television series such as Arrow and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow had to be a dream come true for him. The year is 2010. General Glen McMahon (Brad Pitt) is tasked by a committee of civilian leaders with fixing the mess in Afghanistan. What this actually entails is open to debate. Does it mean winning the hearts and minds of the local populous? Or winning the war against the Taliban? McMahon reckons they’re the same thing.
He and his ego-stroking team take a tour of the country, to see the meagre and underfunded efforts being made by the allies to make good on their promise of roads, schools, democracy, and all that good stuff. McMahon finds a desert of broken dreams.
He requests forty thousand extra troops, so that he might exorcise Helmand Province of its elusive evil. In return he gets minimal reinforcements,...

THR is reporting that Sony is making big moves to expand its Spider-Man franchise and have signed Tom Hardy to star in their Venom film. Zombieland's Ruben Fleischer is in talks to direct the pic. The studio has already set on October 5, 2018 release date. Venom has been one of Marvel’s top villains and a Spider-Man fixture since he was introduced in 1988, created by writer David Michelinie and artists Todd McFarlane and Mike Zeck. The character is an alien symbiote that needs a human host to survive. In return, the alien vests its victim with incredible powers. He made his first big-screen appearance in Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 and was portrayed by Topher Grace. Scott Rosenberg and Jeff Pinkner, the latter of...

Forrest Gump was a huge hit - but it's worth remembering just what a massive, massive gamble it was. Here's just a slice of that story...
Few major Hollywood blockbusters of the 1990s can lay claim to being some kind of cultural phenomenon, but surely Forrest Gump can. Love or loathe the film, its dialogue has slipped into everyday language, it’s inspired a spin-off bunch of restaurants, and it’s one of the top grossing films of the decade. Oh, and it won a bunch of Oscars, including a second consecutive Best Actor win for Tom Hanks.
It’s often said that the most successful films, though, have tumultuous behind the scene stories. I remember when Richard Donner directed Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas in Assassins (based on a heavily butchered script by the pre-Matrix Wachowskis), and it was widely reported that the shoot was a calm and very pleasurable one.

Alex Karpovsky knows his way around an ill-fated working road trip. Back in 2012, the indie multi-hyphenate pulled triple duty on his “Red Flag,” starring in a feature he also wrote and directed about a filmmaker taking his latest work on around the country on a makeshift tour that only did more (mostly amusing) harm than good. In Jeff Grace’s amiable “Folk Hero & Funny Guy,” Karpovsky is mining similar territory in a comedy elevated by pairing up the actor with rising star Wyatt Russell.
As childhood friends who have taken wildly divergent paths in life — Karpovsky’s Paul is a struggling standup comedian who just ended an engagement, Russell’s Jason is a mildly successful folk singer who is having a hell of a time traveling the country and jamming out, with groupies to spare — the pair have a lived-in, believable chemistry that hinges equally on their affection for and disappointment in each other.

Here's everything you need to know…
More: The 13 Biggest Questions We Need Answered Before 'Pll' Ends!
With Noel's head (presumably) still bouncing around that abandoned school, the Liars were foolishly under the impression that their A-related nightmares were finally over.

Jed and Mercedes Castillo have made each other better individuals, and now they get to enjoy the spoils of their work together.
Castillo, 19, was recently released from New York’s Erie County Correctional Facility, reports Wivb. One of the first things she did with her freedom is reunite with a friend from behind bars: Jed the puppy.
During her incarceration, Castillo took part in the prison’s Pups at the Pen program, which pairs inmates with shelter dogs who need a little more socialization before they are ready for adoption. Castillo was partnered with Jed, then a timid lab mix who needed help trusting others.

The Pennsylvania parents accused of “gifting” some of their nine daughters to a man who allegedly impregnated one of them pleaded guilty to child endangerment Thursday.
Savilla Stoltzfus, 43, pleaded guilty to one count of endangering the welfare of children, a felony of the third degree. Her 44-year-old husband, Daniel Stoltzfus, pleaded no contest to the same charge. The couple could receive sentences of up to seven years in prison and a fine of $15,000.
At the hearing, the Stoltzfuses admitted they were aware that 52-year-old Lee Kaplan, a spiritual advisor figure to the family, was having sex with their eldest daughter when she was a minor.

Another impressive horror restoration! Majestic Pictures pulls together a great cast, including Fay Wray and Lionel Atwill, for a smart gothic horror outing complete with squeaky bats, a flipped-out village idiot (Dwight Frye!), a crazed mad scientist (the worst kind) and a lynch mob with torches that have been hand-tinted in color. Melvyn Douglas is the debonair flatfoot assigned to solve a series of vampire killings.

The Writers Guild of America is inching a step closer toward a potential writers’ strike.
The WGA’s negotiating committee sent a letter to members on Friday, recommending that the guild’s 12,000 members take a vote on strike authorization. It did not give a timetable for such a vote, however, and such a vote would not automatically lead to a strike.
Negotiations between the WGA and the Alliance of Motion Pictures & Television Producers started March 13, but without any movement, the guild is looking to take the next step.

The body of Ben Grimes lays lifeless on the ground. Squatting next to him is his Army Ranger brother and close friend, Eric Carter. Eric is holding some of Ben’s belongings: a picture of all the members of their unit and Ben’s dog tags. Eric is pained by he loss of his friend, his brother in arms. He places the picture back in its plastic bag, but keeps Ben’s dog tags for himself.
It wouldn't be 24 without some personal pain for the main character.
With Gabriel out of the picture, CTU can only depend upon the information from his laptop in order to find Bin Khalid’s terrorist cells. As extreme as Eric’s idea was, it all pays off. The CTU Response Team is able to uncover files from the laptop that reveal the aliases of the terrorists, including Jadalla Bin-Khalid, and their current location.

France is losing the piracy battle, suggests report.
The pirating of audiovisual content cost France an estimated €1.35b ($1.42b) in lost tax revenue and earnings in 2016, according to a new study by the French branch of global consultancy and accountancy group Ey.
An estimated 13 million people accessed pirated audiovisual content in France last year, equivalent to 27% of France’s 48 million internet users, the report published on Feb 22 revealed.
“The pirating of audiovisual content in France represents a significant economic and social cost – to the state, creatives, distributors and employees – and is not going down in spite of efforts to develop a legal offering,” it noted.
“This underlines the need to re-enforce the support for the fight against piracy. The government also needs to play its role, in collaboration with international authorities, for it to be effective.”
Breakdown
Breaking down the €1.35bn loss, the study estimated that audiovisual piracy cost the French state €430m in tax and social...

Last Week’S Review: Season 6 Premiere Finds the Light While Escaping It All
Love Her or Hate Her
Hannah is finally getting some traction in her career, and it looks good on her. Although she’s the same self-indulgent, dramatically inclined person we’ve always known, there’s a newfound calmness about her as she settles into something resembling maturity. This week it manifested in a surprising heart-to-heart between Hannah and Bff Marnie, with whom Hannah had escaped the city so that Marnie could partake in some self-indulgences herself (namely in the form of ex-husband Desi). In a poignant moment, Hannah admitted that she’s no longer judging because she’s finally realized no one has it all figured out, and we actually believe her. Even though hours earlier she was lamenting about having to keep Marnie’s tryst with Desi a secret from Ray.

Earlier this week, GLAAD, the leading advocacy organization for Lgbtq representation in the media, launched glaadgrants, which will offer funding and mentorship to content creators for in-progress works that advance GLAAD’s mission of amplifying diverse voices from the Lgbtq community.
“Our vision is to support and inspire content creators to tell stories that accelerate acceptance of Lgbtq people here at home and around the world,” said GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis. “With a special emphasis on under-represented Lgbtq people, GLAAD’s work empowers real people to tell stories and amplify their voices, and glaadgrants is our latest initiative towards that goal.”

One of the frontrunners for the Oscars, Moonlight finally arrives in UK cinemas. Here's our review...
Settling in to see Moonlight, I ended up sat next to a one-time colleague, who confessed that he was in to see the film for the second time. He’d caught it before at a film festival screening last year, and hadn’t been instantly blown away by Barry Jenkins’ widely acclaimed - and multi-Oscar nominated - film. He realised, though, that Moonlight continued to rattle around in his head, and wanted to give it another shot. He was glad, once the credits rolled, that he had.
I didn’t have the luxury of the second viewing, but instead I deferred to time. I watched Moonlight a few weeks ago, and – appreciating that the internet era demands an instant reaction to pretty much everything – I waited it out. Because if I’d written this...

Relationships between documentary filmmakers and their subjects must balance access and editorial control, which leaves them walking a line between establishing trust and respecting boundaries. It’s a tricky business.
IndieWire recently asked nonfiction filmmakers behind this year’s Sundance documentary features about the understandings they established with their subjects before they started shooting, and if they considered their stars to be collaborators.

I explained my vision of the story, with the emphasis on wanting to tell a positive story about Baltimore, these young women, and what they were trying to accomplish. I absolutely consider them collaborators.

I was extremely excited when I walked out of the original xXx back in the summer of 2002. Finally, a spy film for my generation. Something that could mix international espionage and the X-Games aesthetic that seemed poised to take over the world. I’ve rewatched xXx recently and it does not hold up at all. Also, I never participated in any extreme sports or watched very much of any X-Games so I have no idea why embracing this culture appealed to me at all. In retrospect, the original xXx was an okay action movie with some fantastic costuming and an awful lot of dated references. 15 years later xXx: Return of Xander Cage is still trying to traffic in counter-culture hipness, but it doesn’t feel like anyone involved in the production has talked to a cool person or a youth in decades. Return of Xander Cage is jam-packed with the...

This year, Amazon has made a bold entrance into the Oscar scene thanks to Manchester By The Sea, a Best Picture contender it has distributed domestically. Manchester originally premiered at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, and at the 2017 edition of that event, Amazon is once again courting independent filmmakers. It has offered $100,000 and an increased royalty rate to narrative filmmakers who choose to upload their movies to the less-than-a-year-old Amazon Video Direct service.
The offer also extends to documentarians and world filmmakers, though the payouts -- $75,000 and $25,000, respectively -- are lower. Any creator who takes this deal and uploads his or her Sundance film to Amazon Video Direct will earn 30 cents for each hour of watch time that film generates; that rate is double the 15-cent hourly royalty paid to other Direct uploaders. In return, participating filmmakers must make their work available on Amazon for two years, with at least a year of exclusivity.
