The Vietnamese-born director’s new film is a sumptuous love letter to French food culture starring former real-life couple Juliette Binoche and Benoît Magimel. He talks about the formal appeal of haute cuisine and the poetry of an omelette
The current menu for film and TV stories about cuisine is all conflict and crisis – kitchens as battlefields, dishes forged in the white-hot skillet of raging tempers. But new French film The Taste of Things couldn’t be further from The Bear or Boiling Point. A controlled simmer is more the temperature of this piece by Vietnamese-born director Tran Anh Hung – the most rapturous hymn to culinary art since such beloved gourmet outings as Babette’s Feast or Eat Drink Man Woman.
Set in the 1880s, the film – which won Tran the best director award at Cannes last year – is about the relationship between cook Eugénie (Juliette Binoche) and her gourmet employer...

Two of his programs appear on the 2018 Emmy ballot: CNN’s “Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown” as Best Informational Series Or Special and the online offshoot “Anthony Bourdain: Explore Parts Unknown” as Best Short Form Nonfiction Or Reality Series. Kinetic Content CEO Chris Coelen met his own wife on a blind date. So he’s a natural to executive produce “Married at First Sight,” which pairs six strangers in legally binding marriages and then watches the inevitably fraught results. The reality series wraps its eyebrow-raising second season on Tuesday on Fyi network. TheWrap spoke to Coelen, who also produces “The Taste,” “Little Women:la,” and prior shows “Wife Swap,” and “Don’t Forget the Lyrics.” He gamely fielded questions table-side at the Beverly Hilton, moments after he and co-executive producer Sam Dean lost the Critics Choice TV Award to Clay Newbill and Mark Burnett.

"It's about food that makes our life easier, that makes us feel better, more alive, and less stressed," she said.

This cooking competition didn't do that well in the ratings in its first season and then the numbers dropped a lot lower in season two. ABC still renewed The Taste for a third round. Will the ratings go up in season three or will they drop lower? Cancelled or renewed for season four? Stay tuned.
The Taste is a culinary competition that pits professional and amateur cooks against one another in weekly challenges. The returning judges/mentors are Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Lawson, Ludo Lefebvre, and Marcus Samuelsson.
The ratings are typically the best indication of a show's likelihood of staying on the air. The higher the ratings (particularly the 18-49 demo), the better the chances for survival. This chart will be updated as new ratings data becomes available -- usually the next day, around 11:30am Est/8:30am Pst. Refresh to see the latest. (more…)...

Et's Kevin Frazier went behind the scenes of The Taste to see what the show has in store for its return Thursday and do his own judging of the chefs' dishes.

Renowned chefs Nigella Lawson, Marcus Sammuelsson, Ludo Lefebvre and Anthony Bourdain serve as mentors/judges on the ABC show, which averaged 3.7 million viewers last season -- more than double that of Top Chef.
What makes The Taste different from other food competition shows is that the mentors/judges taste the dishes blindly to help determine their teams. Kevin did his own blind taste test, choosing Marco as the winner, which left Ludo a little bitter.
"I'm not sure you have a palette, bro," Ludo blurted.

The cooking competition "The Taste" returns tonight to ABC for its third season. The series introduced blind tasting of food to reality competitions--judges don't know whose food they're eating or even what's in the dish. It also brought Anthony Bourdain to a big, bright, glossy ABC reality show. The star of Travel Channel's Emmy-winning "No Reservations" and now CNN's "Parts Unknown" seems like perhaps the last person to gravitate to a "The Voice"-like competition for food, but when we talked Wednesday, one day before he was heading to Madagascar for "Parts Unknown," he was clearly, unabashedly enthusiastic about the series, which he also executive produces. When I asked about whether skeptical fans have now warmed to "The Taste" and his participation, Bourdain said, "I honestly don't think about. It's always a quality of life issue for me. Am I having fun? Am I working with people I like?...

If you ask The Taste mentor Ludo Lefebvre, there is more pressure on him than fellow mentors Anthony Bourdain, Marcus Samuelsson or Nigella Lawson heading into the ABC cooking competition's third season, which premieres Dec. 4. "Tony, Marcus and Nigella have nothing to lose — they are losers already," Lefebvre, who mentored the winning season-two cook, bluntly told The Hollywood Reporter during a recent set visit. Tom is taking part in Unicef’s #WakeUpCall campaign to raise awareness for child refugees in Syria (according to Unicef, there are currently 6.5 million) and raise money for humanitarian aid.

So the big Emmys don't air until next Sunday night and at Moviefone we will have, of course, full coverage. But last night the Creative Arts Emmys were handed out, for the people that are largely responsible for making these shows that you absolutely love -- you know, the behind-the-scenes talent tasked with conceptualizing and realizing your favorite programs. Oh -- and some guest actor and actresses awards were handed out, so there's that too!

The first round of 2014 Emmy Awards were handed out at the Creative Arts Emmys ceremony on Saturday (August 16) night at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony, which precedes the Monday, August 25 Primetime Emmy Awards telecast, offered signs of hope for a number of drama and comedy hopefuls. Netflix's "Orange Is The New Black," for example, won Emmys for editing, series casting and for Uzo Aduba, who is considered a guest actress for the purposes of these awards. No other comedy series was able to build any other momentum going into next week's show, with "The Big Bang Bang Theory," "Nurse Jackie," "How I Met Your Mother" and "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" grabbing isolated tech prizes and Jimmy Fallon winning the Guest Actor in a Comedy Series award for the second time in three years for his "Saturday Night Live" hosting duties. The two guest acting awards on the drama side...

Television fans, the moment is finally here! Mindy Kaling and Carson Daly woke up at the crack of dawn to announce the contenders for the 2014 Emmy Awards this morning (July 10).
There is plenty of hype surrounding this year's nominees, due to the high caliber performances that spread across both the drama and comedy realms. One of the biggest stories for the upcoming award show is HBO's series "True Detective" choosing to submit as a drama instead of a miniseries. This puts up plenty of competition for fellow dramas including “Breaking Bad,” “Mad Men" and “Game of Thrones."
As for the comedies, newcomers "Orange is the New Black" and "Silicon Valley" are expected to put up a stiff arm towards its competitors like "Veep" and the always-successful "Modern Family."
An especially tough match comes between the Lead Actors in a Drama category with Bryan Cranston (“Breaking Bad”), Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom...

The 2014 Emmy Nominations were announced this morning, and like always they will please and upset people depending on whom you talk to. The great news is that TV Drama is alive and well; it has to be celebrated and just a nomination for attention makes me happy. If you haven’t been watching or have watched shows like True Detective, Fargo, Louis, and Shameless, maybe it’s time. The quick snub I saw would go the mentioned Shameless and the performance by Emmy Rossum (pictured above). She was perfect this past season and watching her on screen was consistently memorizing; another season is on the way thankfully.
The best new TV shows of the year, Fargo and True Detective share a lot in common. Both shows are doing one and done seasons meaning each season is set to have a new cast and with True Detective a new location. They...

The nominations for the 66th Emmy Awards were released this morning, and I’m surprisingly satisfied with the results. Though there were an overabundance of nominations for the so-so Netflix series House of Cards and not nearly enough (read: any) for BBC America’s criminally-underrated Orphan Black, including for lead actress Tatiana Maslany, the categories shook out in a mostly predictable, if fair way.
Of course, heavyweights Breaking Bad and True Detective will be duking it out in the Outstanding Drama Series and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series categories (the latter of which saw both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson swipe nominations). Other shows which scored big include American Horror Story: Coven, dominating the Miniseries categories, Game of Thrones, which has the most nominations at 19, and Fargo, trailing just behind with 18.

Fox won't be the only network with a cooking competition next season. ABC has renewed The Taste for a third season.
The Taste is a culinary competition that pits professional and amateur cooks against one another in weekly challenges. The most recent judges/mentors were Anthony Bourdain, Nigella Lawson, Ludo Lefebvre, and Marcus Samuelsson. Brian Malarkey, the winning coach from the first season, was replaced by Samuelsson.
The show's first season averaged a 1.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic with 4.51 million viewers. It was renewed for a second season which started airing this past January. The sophomore year drew just a 1.1 demo rating (down 32%) with 3.69 million (down 18%).
Despite this very poor performance, the network has decided to bring The Taste back for a third season. It's slated to return mid-season, likely as a timeslot placeholder.

Anthony Bourdain is tweeting mad about his The Taste costar Nigella Lawson being refused entry into the U.S. One day after news broke that Lawson was stopped at Heathrow Airport and banned from boarding a flight to L.A. for unknown reasons, Bourdain is defending her and blasting her travel ban. He followed up with, "Toronto mayor, Rob Ford? Welcome to the USA. Nigella Lawson? No. Really? Absolutely appalling misuse of our system. And by whom? How?" Nigella Lawson isn't exactly getting first-class treatment lately. According to reports, the celebrity chef, 54, was stopped from boarding a British Airways flight from London to Los Angeles last Sunday. While a rep for Lawson would not comment on the situation, Britain's Daily Mail reports that one reason for her denied entry could stem from her explosive testimony during a fraud trial against two former personal assistants in December, during which Lawson admitted to having used cocaine and cannabis in the past. Britain never pursued legal action against her over those revelations. But under U.S. law, foreigners can be denied...

London, April 3: Nigella Lawson was banned from flying to the Us after she confessed to using illegal drugs, it has been revealed.
Lawson went to Heathrow on Sunday morning to catch a British Airway flight to Los Angeles, but was told that she wouldn't be allowed into the flight, the Independent reported.
Sources claimed that the TV chef didn't seem to say much, but did not look happy and she had to turn around and leave.
The Us asks people if they have ever been arrested or convicted in relation to illegal drugs and can decide to prevent entry to the country even if the person involved was never charged.
The 54-year-old, who is a judge on cookery show 'The Taste' in the Us, had admitted that she took cocaine.

Nigella Lawson is in a better place than ever before. The brunette beauty is gracing the April cover of British Vogue, has recently completed the second season of the popular reality show The Taste, and she's seemingly put her much-publicized struggles over the past year behind her. Expect, she's still dealing with the emotional aftermath after facing a drama filled divorce from former husband Charles Saatchi and then later losing a high-profile court case against her former assistants, during which her drug use became the focal point. America has voted, and the judge you most want to see win an Emmy for his work on "American Idol" is... Keith Urban! And the results of our poll weren't even close. -Break- Last week, we asked you "Which 'American Idol' Season 13 judge deserves an Emmy?" and you voted in droves for Australian country singer Urban, giving him nearly 80% of your vote. Second place went to "Idol" newcomer Harry Connick Jr. with 11%, while three-time judge Jennifer Lopez came in third with only 4%. While there isn't a category at the Emmys for Best Reality Judge, mentor Anthony Bourdain ("The Taste") did squeeze into the Best Reality Host category last year. Ever since that, we awards watchers have wondered if the rules could be about to shift to allow judges to compete. Don't forget to cast your official predictions for which singer will win "American Idol" and who will be voted off next.

London, March 10: Nigella Lawson's cooking show 'The Taste' is expected to be canned after its initial 10-part series.
According to figures from overnights.tv., nearly half of the 1.8 million first show viewers failed to return for the second programme of the 'culinary version of The Voice', the Mirror reported.
The hour-long culinary contest has garnered just over 850,000 viewers with some episodes drawing over 100,000 less people than the tally, due to which Lawson and co-judges Anthony Bourdain and Ludo Lefebvre have not been signed up for a return.
However, a Channel 4 spokesperson has said that no decision.

Going into the finale of "The Taste" Season 2, Ludo Lefebvre had three team members left -- Marina Chung, Jeff Kawakami and Louise Leonard -- to one cook on Anthony Bourdain's team, Lee Knoeppel. The other two chefs had no contestants remaining.
For the semifinal challenge, international chef Jacques Pépin was there to judge. Each chef prepared a "poor dish" and a "rich dish," which made for quite the contrasting ingredients. Pépin put through Marina, Louise and Lee, leaving Jeff eliminated before the finals.
The final challenge was a "Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner" challenge -- three mouthfuls, one each for each meal of the day. With Chef Pépin helping them in the kitchen!
Marina made English muffin with quail egg, a pork belly and oyster spring roll and short ribs with kale for her three stages. Louise chose a fried quail egg, fried oyster po' boy and steak with red wine sauce and mushrooms.

Vice has teamed up with production company FremantleMedia to launch new food programming.
The companies plan to create a "multi-channel food platform", which will focus on bringing culinary topics to a young audience.
The shows will air online but FremantleMedia will also distribute the content to television channels around the world, with features, articles, recipes and events expected to be included among the plans.
Series focusing on various themes - such as world cuisine and a quirky look at home cooking - are also in the works, with Vice hoping that festivals, tastings and a 'food locator' service will follow in the future.
Vice president Andrew Creighton said: "Today's youth are the driving force behind the food culture explosion, yet they remain totally under-served when it comes to original food programming.
