Dune: Prophecy took a winding path to the small screen, but showrunner Alison Schapker was more than ready to take the reins of HBO’s latest spinoff of a beloved Warner Bros.’ film franchise.

The six-episode series about the origin of the mysterious Bene Gesserit changed creative leadership a few different times until Schapker and Diane Ademu-John became co-creators and co-showrunners. When production began in late 2022, Schapker then took on the role of sole showrunner through its delivery to the network. It was familiar territory for the scribe, having most recently served as an executive producer on Westworld season four and showrunner on Altered Carbon season two. Dune: Prophecy — HBO’s prequel series set a full 10,000 years before the Timothée Chalamet/Rebecca Ferguson movie franchise — spans just six episodes in its first season, and a dense six episodes they are.

Premiering this Sunday at 9/8c, the sci-fantasy series opens with a meaty prologue that lays the foundation for the conflict that drives it, but from there it’s full steam ahead, introducing characters and dynamics and agendas that shift like the sands of Arrakis.

Unlike Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies, which are relatively faithful adaptations of the books, Dune: Prophecy is a foray into Dune lore.

The former has a ton of written material to rely on, while the latter relies on secondary exposition and Frank Herbert’s world-building machinations.

The Bene Gesserit are part of a much larger whole, though their direct role in the events of Dune and the succeeding books is integral and extensive.

Regardless of what anyone thinks of Dune (beneath the immense worldbuilding is a simple and straightforward premise), Dune: Prophecy has the advantage of disengagement from the core.

This is both good and bad because it opens up a window of creative opportunity but retains just enough association that it runs the risk of seriously pissing off the Dune faithful.

Back in July, Apple TV+ unveiled a teaser trailer for season 2 of their psychological thriller series Severance, which is set to drop its first episode on Friday, January 17, 2025. One episode will follow every Friday through March 21. And if that July teaser trailer didn’t provide enough of a tease for your liking, here’s some good news: a new teaser trailer has made its way online and can now be viewed in the embed above!

Severance is created and written by Dan Erickson, with Ben Stiller serving as director and executive producer. In a statement when season 2 first went into production, Stiller said, “We are thrilled and delighted to be back on set for the exciting second chapter of Severance. Though we don’t know how long we’ve been gone or who we are outside, we are told people enjoy the show and we couldn’t be happier. Praise Kier!

This Thursday afternoon at New York Comic Con, HBO announced that Dune: Prophecy — its TV series (greatly) pre-dating the film franchise — will premiere Sunday, Nov. 17 at 9/8c.

A full trailer was also released, seen above, that better lays out the conflicts brewing for the fabled sisterhood that will become known as the Bene Gesserit.

Exclusive: Range Media Partners has inked TV scribe, producer and director Johanna Lee.

Most recently, Lee served as a co-executive producer on the upcoming Netflix medical drama procedural series Pulse. Lee has also worked on renowned shows such as Scandal, The Good Doctor, Altered Carbon, Star Trek: Discovery and more.

Lee is also developing a high-profile show, currently under wraps, with Escape Artists and MGM TV, which was the subject of one of the summer’s biggest bidding wars.

Additionally, Lee is the supervising showrunner on Pearl, a TV show based at wiip Studios.

Originally from New York, Lee started her career as one of the only female traders on the floor at the New York Board of Trade and directed a documentary about her experience, called The Pit, for Netflix. That led to a tenure in the NBC Writer’s Program.

She continues to be repped by UTA and Jr McGinnis.

After a ridiculously successful first season, fans of Elsbeth are ready for the police procedural to return with more murder mayhem and hijinks.

With a Rotten Tomatoes score of ninety-four percent, the review aggregator’s consensus on the show is that “Carrie Preston’s standout character from The Good Wife makes for a great detective in this amiable and clever spinoff.”

The series has proven that The Good Wife universe has plenty of room to expand into more shows and genres. Elsbeth starkly contrasted the heavy intensity of The Good Wife and The Good Fight.

It has a fun and lighter tone than its sister shows, but that doesn’t mean the creators aren’t above dropping an easter egg or two.

In fact, all of the episodic murderers for Season 1 were actors who had previously portrayed different characters in either The Good Wife or The Good Fight.

When canceling a series, Netflix will face some controversy. Fans are quick to flock to social media to object to such a decision. But if viewership doesn’t match a show’s budget, pulling the plug is something the streamer will do both without warning and regardless of the opinions of the viewing public. Exclusive: Edward Norton has signed on to narrate Fasting And The Longevity Revolution, a health and wellness documentary directed by Barry Alexander Brown, best known as a longtime editor on projects directed by Spike Lee.

Today, Netflix revealed the main cast and title of Jo Nesbø’s upcoming crime series about the introverted detective Harry Hole. The live cast announcement happened at the iconic restaurant Schrøder in Oslo, Norway, which also serves as Harry Hole’s “second home” in the novels.

Tobias Santelmann will lead the cast as the legendary detective Harry Hole, alongside Joel Kinnaman as Tom Waaler, and Pia Tjelta as Rakel Fauke.

German-Norwegian actor Tobias Santelmann (The Last Kingdom) will play the lead in the Jo Nesbø adaptation, which will be officially titled Jo Nesbo’s Detective Hole.

Santelmann is joined by Joel Kinnaman (Altered Carbon, The Suicide Squad) playing Tom Waaler and Pia Tjelta (Made in Oslo, State of Happiness) as Rakel Fauke. The casting has been announced in the past few minutes at the iconic restaurant Schrøder in Oslo, Norway, which also serves as Harry Hole’s ‘second home’ in the novels.

Created by the much-loved Scandi crime fiction author, Nesbø’s Harry Hole is a whodunnit serial killer mystery led by the famed anti-hero. Underneath the surface, it is a nuanced character drama about two police officers – and supposed colleagues – operating on opposite sides of the law. Throughout the first season, Harry goes head-to-head with his long time adversary and corrupt detective Tom Waaler.

The South Korean actress, musician, and multimedia artist is the latest casting to be announced for the series, after Variety exclusively reported that Indian superstar Tabu would also be appearing in the show.

The series was originally commissioned in 2019 under the title “Dune: The Sisterhood.” It is inspired by the novel “Sisterhood of Dune” written by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. According to Deadline‘s exclusive report, Ice Falls revolves around a “young Indigenous game warden who arrests an infamous poacher only to discover that the poacher knows the location of a plane carrying millions of dollars that has crashed in a frozen lake. When a group of criminals and dirty cops are alerted to the poacher’s whereabouts, the warden and the poacher team up to fight back and escape across the treacherous lake before the ice melts.”

“The Witcher” Season 4 has cast Sharlto Copley, James Purefoy, and Danny Woodburn, Variety has learned exclusively.

Copley will play the infamous bounty hunter Leo Bonhart from “The Witcher” novels. Purefoy will play Skellen, a high-ranking spy and court advisor to Emhyr who is also a prominent figure in the novels. Woodburn will play Zoltan, a fan favorite dwarf character from the novels and “Witcher” video games.

The trio join previously announced cast members Liam Hemsworth, who takes over the lead role of Geralt of Rivia from Henry Cavill, as well as Anya Chalotra, Freya Allan, Joey Batey, and Laurence Fishburne.

Copley is best known for his breakout role in the sci-fi film “District 9.” He has since starred in features such as “The A-Team,” “Elysium,” “Chappie,” and “Hardcore Henry.” He also stars in Dev Patel’s upcoming film “Monkey Man” and appeared in multiple episodes of the Netflix series “Russian Doll.

Bodies is a British sci-fi murder-mystery series created by Paul Tomalin. Based on the DC Vertigo comic and graphic novel of the same name written by Si Spencer, and illustrated by Dean Ormston, Tula Lotay, Meghan Hetrick, and Phil Winsdale. The fourth installment of HBO’s True Detective series is poised to be the spookiest yet. Set in the remote town of Ennis, Alaska, Night Country follows former partners Liz Danvers and Evangeline Navarro as they investigate the disappearance of eight researchers from a remote facility. The pair have a tense past, not only with each other, but with others in their small town.

True Detective: Night Country marks Jodie Foster’s first television appearance since the ’70s – not counting her handful of voiceover and narration guest roles in the ’90s and early ’00s – though certainly not her first time starring in a thriller. Former All Rise and Luke Cage star Simone Missick has been cast opposite David Oyelowo in Government Cheese, Apple TV+’s upcoming dramedy starring and executive produced by Oyelowo, Deadline has confirmed.

Created by Paul Hunter and Aeysha Carr, Government Cheese follows Hampton Chambers (Oyelowo), a man recently released from prison who struggles to keep his criminal past at bay and win back his family, all while processing moments of divine intervention that seem to happen with increasing frequency.

Missick will portray Oyelowo’s wife, Astoria.

Government Cheese is based on an eponymous original short film by Hunter. Produced by Apple Studios and Macro Televisions Studios, Government Cheese is written and executive produced by Hunter, who also directs, and Carr. Charles D. King and Ahmadou Seck will executive produce the series for Macro Television Studios along with Jelani Johnson and Marta Fernandez. Oyelowo will executive produce through his Yoruba Saxon banner.

Exclusive: Brad Ingelsby’s upcoming HBO crime drama series starring Mark Ruffalo has added to its exec producer and director ranks.

Salli Richardson-Whitfield has joined the project and will direct multiple episodes and exec produce. She joins Jeremiah Zaga, who will direct the pilot episode plus multiple episodes as well as exec produce.

It comes as Richardson-Whitfield becomes one of HBO’s go-to directors, having recently directed episodes of Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty and The Gilded Age.

The untitled drama is set in the working class suburbs outside of Philadelphia and follows an FBI agent who heads a Task Force to put an end to a string of drug-house robberies led by an unsuspecting family man.

The BBC has picked up Irish crime drama Kin from Fifth Season.

The RTÉ series, which aired in the U.S. on AMC+, is the latest high-profile show snapped up by the BBC buying team, following the likes of AMC’s Interview with the Vampire. It is produced by Joker financier Bron Studios and Man in the High Castle outfit Headline Pictures.

Kin stars Clare Dunne (Herself), Charlie Cox (Daredevil), Aidan Gillen (Game of Thrones) and Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones). It follows gang wars in Dublin. A boy is killed and his family embarks on a gangland war with an international cartel: a war that is impossible to win. Skydance Animation has signed a multi-year exclusive agreement with Netflix to develop and produce animated films to be released directly on Netflix.

The deal kicks off with Spellbound (pictured) in 2024 followed by Pookoo a year later and expands on the prior relationship between the streamer and Skydance Media.

Wednesday’s announcement comes as Skydance Animation’s multi-year deal with Apple ends as the latter shifts its focus to other types of film. Spellbound had been set to debut on Apple TV+ but will now launch on Netflix.

David Ellison’s Skydance Animation has found a new home at Netflix, ending a lucrative distribution pact with Apple Studios.

Skydance Animation, run by John Lasseter with president Holly Edwards, will now exclusively release its animated movies directly to Netflix in an arrangement that will span multiple years, with the studio’s existing slate also moving exclusively to the streamer.

The first up will be “Spellbound,” which was previously set up at Apple. The film, starring Rachel Zegler and Tituss Burgess, is now set for release by Netflix in 2024, followed by “Pookoo” in 2025. Future films include “Ray Gunn,” directed by Brad Bird and an untitled Jack and the Beanstalk project directed by Rich Moore. Theatrical releases do not seem to be a part of the new Netflix-Skydance Animation agreement.

That didn’t take long. Skydance Animation has found a new home, signing a multi-year agreement with Netflix to develop and produce animated movies to be released directly on Netflix. This deal means Skydance’s full existing animated feature slate will be released exclusively on Netflix.

Deal comes as a multi-year pact with Apple comes to an end. Skydance Animation is already staked with Netflix, and the deal expands on a number of different projects. The first new one is Spellbound, a film that began its road at Apple, but will now debut on Netflix in 2024. That will be followed by Pookoo in 2025.

This deal expands on the existing relationship between the two companies who have already partnered on a number of projects including the films The Adam Project, Heart of Stone, The Old Guard, and Spy Kids: Armageddon along with the series Fubar, Altered Carbon and Grace and Frankie.
