There’ll be plenty of folks out there keeping an eye out for director Derek Cianfrance’s next film, partly because we’ve had to wait so long for it. It’s been eight years since he made 2016’s The Light Between Oceans, and although he;s since been attached to the odd project, nothing ever came to fruition.

Cianfrance is the director behind Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, so any project he attaches himself to will be of interest to people who liked those movies. His latest film, Roofman, stars Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst and tells the true story of Jeffrey Manchester, a career criminal who made a habit of breaking into shops through their roofs (hence the film’s name). “Roofman,” a drama starring Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst, will open in theaters next fall.

Paramount is distributing the movie, which is scheduled for Oct. 3, 2025.

Derek Cianfrance (“Blue Valentine”) is directing “Roofman” from a script he co-wrote with Kirk Gunn. Based on a true story, the film follows Tatum as a former Army Ranger and struggling father who turns to robbing McDonald’s restaurants by cutting holes in their roofs, earning him the nickname “Roofman.” After escaping from prison, he starts a new life while hiding in a toy store, falling in love with a single mother (Dunst) and her two daughters. However, his criminal past and a final robbery threaten to destroy his chance at redemption. Peter Dinklage rounds out the cast.

The Zurich Film Festival will honor Swedish actor Alicia Vikander, who won an Oscar with “The Danish Girl,” during its 20th edition, which runs Oct. 3-13.

Vikander will accept the festival’s Golden Eye Award on Oct. 8 when she presents the Swiss premiere of her new film “The Assessment,” which is directed by Fleur Fortuné.

“The Assessment,” in which she stars opposite Elizabeth Olsen, tells the story of a society striving for perfection, living in a world devastated by climate change, trying to optimize life – including the assessment of parenthood. A couple is examined by an assessor for seven days to determine their suitability to have children.

The award recognizes her “outstanding acting performance and her consistently courageous and clever choice of roles,” as demonstrated in auteur films and blockbusters alike, including “Ex Machina,” “The Danish Girl,” “Anna Karenina,” “Jason Bourne,” “The Green Knight” and “Tomb Raider.”

Vikander will be handed the award on October 8 before presenting the Swiss premiere of her new film The Assessment by the director Fleur Fortuné.

Derek Cianfrance, director and co-writer of “The Place Beyond the Pines,” told IndieWire at the New Directors/New Films festival that Bradley Cooper almost bowed out of the production after receiving a rewritten script.

Just before principle photography began, Cianfrance brought in screenwriter Darius Marder to rewrite “every word” of “The Place Beyond the Pines.” Cooper was not pleased with the changes to his character, a police officer who kills off a compassionate thief (Ryan Gosling) at the film’s halfway mark.

“I had given [Marder] the script and he had a lot of notes for it, and I kind of agreed with a lot of what he was saying. Writer/director Derek Cianfrance, who co-wrote the feature with future “Sound of Metal” director Darius Marder, revealed during IndieWire’s Screen Talk live at the New Directors/New Films festival that Academy Award-nominated Cooper wavered after receiving an updated script.

Cianfrance brought writer Marder onboard to help rewrite “every word” of “The Place Beyond the Pines” shortly before shooting began. According to Cianfrance, actor Cooper was less than pleased with the updates to his character, a police officer who kills an empathetic thief (Ryan Gosling) midway through the decade-spanning 2013 film.

Exclusive: A hot project just got hotter. Emmy-nominated Korean actress and model Hoyeon, who made waves with Netflix’s Squid Game, is set to make her feature debut in director Na Hong-Jin’s Korean thriller Hope, which we revealed earlier today.

She joins Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and Oscar nominee Michael Fassbender.

This is the first project from acclaimed Korean director Na since 2016 hit The Wailing, and it’ll mark Hoyeon’s first starring role in a Korean project since she made her screen debut in Squid Game.

The largely Korean-language film will follow the residents of Hopo Port, where a mysterious discovery is made on the outskirts of the remote harbor town. Before long, the residents find themselves in a desperate fight for survival against something they have never encountered before. Hoyeon will play a policewoman.

Additional casting and pre-production is underway for a shoot later this year in Korea.

Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, real-life husband and wife, are reuniting onscreen for the second time. The Oscar-winner (Vikander for “The Danish Girl”) and the Oscar-nominee (Fassbender for “12 Years A Slave”) will star in “Hope,” a mostly Korean-language feature from Na Hong-Jin.

The picture, about a mysterious delivery made on the outskirts of a remote harbor town, is the filmmaker’s first directorial effort since “The Wailing” earned rave reviews and $49 million worldwide in 2016 from a $6 million budget, with $48 million of that coming from South Korea.

“Oftentimes,” noted Hong-Jin, “a person’s goodwill can lead to unintended catastrophe simply because of differences in perspective. My hope for this film is to cinematically capture that phenomenon in a way that has yet to be seen.”

“Squid Game” star Hoyeon is now set to star in Na Hong-jin’s upcoming film “Hope,” joining Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander. Deadline reported her casting the same day that the film itself was announced.

The movie will be Hoyeon’s first feature, after she earned an Emmy nomination for her acting debut in Netflix’s 2021 series “Squid Game.” Prior to that series, she was known primarily for her work as a model. Hoyeon will next star in Alfonso Cuarón’s Apple TV+ series “Disclaimer,” and is also attached to Joe Talbot’s film “The Governesses,” which also stars Lily-Rose Depp and Renate Reinsve. Exclusive: Universal’s latest Wolfman movie starring Ryan Gosling looks to be gaining momentum as the studio has zeroed in on a director that knows the Oscar-nominated actor’s work very well. Sources tell Deadline that Derek Cianfrance, who teamed with Gosling on the dramas Place Beyond the Pines and Blue Valentine, is in talks to direct a new take on the studio’s classic monster character.

Shopped to buyers at next week’s American Film Market (AFM), the film turns on two strangers traveling through a desert who stumble upon the biggest gold nugget ever found. When dreams of unimaginable wealth take hold, they devise a plan to protect and excavate their bounty with one man leaving to secure the necessary equipment.

Efron plays the man left behind, who comes up against unforgiving desert elements, ravenous wild dogs and mysterious intruders, all while wondering whether his partner is ever going to come back for him. Principal photography on the movie will begin in Australia this month — where film and TV production has been able to continue relatively unscathed during the Covid-19 crisis.

Caren Pistorius was working part-time in a fabrics shop in Sydney last year when her Rgm agent suggested she audition for the lead female role opposite Russell Crowe in a US road rage thriller.

The South African-born, New Zealand-raised actress did a self-tape but felt it was too rushed and didn’t expect it to lead anywhere.

The following day her agent told her the producers wanted her to fly to New Orleans the next day to audition with Crowe.

“I turned up in that room after almost no sleep, feeling delirious,” she tells If on the line from New Zealand, where she is spending lockdown with her family. The next morning director Derrick Borte rang to tell her she’d won the role in Unhinged.

NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, today announced its original content that will be available to stream on July 15, 2020, when the service launches nationally.

Peacock Premium customers can stream all first season episodes of Brave New World, The Capture, Intelligence and Lost Speedways; sports documentary In Deep with Ryan Lochte; and the entire full-length film Psych 2: Lassie Come Home on July 15.

Additionally, Peacock Kids is home to new episodes of Curious George and two original series from DreamWorks Animation: Cleopatra in Space and Where’s Waldo?.

Derek Cianfrance, writer-director of the HBO limited series “I Know This Much Is True,” has set a two-year overall deal with HBO.

The deal calls for the helmer to develop a range of projects for the pay TV powerhouse.

The pact comes a few days before the six-episode series bows on May 10. Cianfrance partnered with “Iktmit” executive producer and star Mark Ruffalo to tackle the adaptation of the acclaimed 1998 novel by Wally Lamb about the lives of two twin brothers, one of whom struggles with mental illness. The cast also features Melissa Leo, Rosie O’Donnell, Archie Panjabi, Imogen Poots, Bruce Greenwood, Juliette Lewis and Kathryn Hahn.

In an interview with Variety in March, Cianfrance discussed the process of filming “Iktmit” with Ruffalo playing both brothers. “He just became both guys,” Cianfrance said. “When he was Dominick, he was an alpha male and a little more angsty. He was a bear to wrestle with.

Scandinavian sales outfit LevelK has acquired world sales rights to New Zealand comedy-drama “Bellbird,” the feature debut of Hamish Bennett.

Produced by Orlando Stewart for Stella Maris Productions and Catherine Fitzgerald for Blueskin Films, Bellbird tells the story of a dairy farmer struggling to cope with the sudden death of his beloved wife, and the gradual bond he builds with his gentle only son and the local community. The movie, written by Bennett, is set over four seasons in a modest Northland dairy farm.

“The characters of ‘Bellbird’ were inspired by my childhood neighbours in the small rural Northland community of Tauraroa…” said Bennett whose last short, “Rose & Beth,” won prizes in New Zealand.

The superhero film is powered by women, with Robbie serving as producer and “Dead Pigs” helmer Cathy Yan in the director’s chair, and that’s one reason Harley Quinn won’t be presented only as an object of desire.

“That’s what happens when you have a female producer, director, writer,” costume designer Erin Benach recently told Vogue about making some slight alterations to Harley Quinn’s “Suicide Squad” look in order to better empower the character.

“Yeah, it’s definitely less male gaze–y,” Robbie added.

Anthony Hayes has been acting since he was nine. While there is no danger of him giving up that stellar career, for the present he is concentrating more on his other passions: writing and directing.

In the past five or six years he has been in the fortunate position of choosing roles he really wanted to do – in the movies Cargo, War Machine and The Light Between Oceans and TV’s Mystery Road and Seven Types of Ambiguity – rather than just for a pay cheque.

HBO has added a slew of big-name actresses to the cast of its upcoming limited series “I Know This Much Is True.”

Melissa Leo, Rosie O’Donnell, Archie Panjabi, Imogen Poots, Juliette Lewis and Kathryn Hahn have all joined the the six-episode series starring and executive produced by Mark Ruffalo.

An adaptation of the 1998 Wally Lamb novel of the same name, the long-gestating project is described as “an epic story of betrayal, sacrifice and forgiveness, set against the backdrop of 20th century America.” Ruffalo will star as twin brothers Dominick and Thomas Birdsey, one of whom suffers from paranoid schizophrenia.
