Following his Best Director Academy Award win, Guillermo del Toro has tried to be slightly more experimental with his projects. After 2017’s The Shape of Water, del Toro’s next project was the 2021 neo-noir psychological thriller Nightmare Alley, based on William Lindsay Gresham’s book of the same name.

During an interview, del Toro discussed his work on the movie, revealing the diabolical nature of its main character’s fate, which most viewers who had read the book were already aware of. However, del Toro had an almost uncanny approach to the source material, even going as far as to draw from personal experiences to craft the movie, and here is what he had to say.

Filmmaker Guillermo del Toro is known for his gothic horror movies, having defined the genre for over two decades. After starting with indie films, del Toro eventually won an Oscar for his work while delivering commercial hits. However, one entry in del Toro’s filmography remains extremely underrated, especially for being genre-defying.

During an interview, del Toro talked about his work on the 2015 gothic romance film Crimson Peak. The filmmaker explained how his intention with the movie was to always flip one common trope of the gothic genre that had become a tradition. In the process, del Toro made one of the saddest underrated horror movies, and here is what he had to say regarding it.

Stream the haunting new adaptation, plus a never-before-seen extended version, starting Friday, Feb. 21.
I absolutely loved “Nosferatu”. It’s everything a horror remake should be - respectful of the original while making its own mark. Bill Skarsgård’s voice as Nosferatu is unreal - guttural, chilling, and completely inhuman. The whole movie is just the right kind of creepy, never leaning on cheap jump scares but instead building tension through eerie visuals, unsettling silence, and incredible performances. Few remakes actually live up to their predecessors, but this one does. And very soon, it’ll be added to my list of best Dracula movies to stream. You can stream “Nosferatu” exclusively on Peacock starting Friday, Feb. 21.

Guillermo del Toro often draws inspiration from the works of other great filmmakers and incorporates them into his own movies to create a visually indulging cinematic experience. He has always expressed admiration for Stanley Kubrick’s films, although he mostly prefers the ones most people dislike.

Ryan Gosling. We would watch anything this man is in. Being one of the most celebrated actors today, he has everything going for him. However, back in 2017, when Blade Runner 2049 was released, we were surprised to see the film underperform at the box office despite such positive reviews. As it turns out, Guillermo del Toro has two cents on why this may have happened.

Giving his point of view on the whole Blade Runner 2049 box office debacle, the filmmaker made a really good point on how budget plays a big role in the film’s performance.

How far would you go for a worthy love story? It's the most pressing question at the forefront of "The Gorge" for its two main leads, rival snipers played with effortless chemistry by Anya Taylor-Joy and Miles Teller. Separated by thousands of meters of canyon depths, the vast gulf between them only exacerbates their need for connection. Yet, intentional or not, this also doubles as an inadvertent commentary on the state of the genre these days. It's no secret that 2024 was a fairly dire year when it comes to rom-coms. But no matter how many decisionmakers in charge want to pretend otherwise, audiences clearly remain starved for something that delivers romance.
As much as filmmakers might want to make straightforward romances, however, they've had far better luck sneaking them into larger genre plays. Think of "Twisters" using the backdrop of CGI tornadoes to do an enemies-to-lovers ship (even if it...

For a long, long time, Hollywood had relegated Zack Snyder to a somewhat diminished status as a director for his previously difficult experiences with Warner Bros. Both his attempts at adapting comic books to live-action films had been deemed a severe failure of creative and artistic sensibilities. Yet, the films in question – Watchmen and Dceu – raised an army of fans who have been unwavering in their fealty to Snyder.
Watchmen [Credit: Warner Bros., Paramount Pictures]
Guillermo del Toro has had a somewhat similar experience in the industry as well. The director, famously known for his love for the bizarre, has nearly 20 fully-developed scripts in his possession that were never made into a movie. Despite his Oscar-winning credentials and unique artistic vision, Hollywood has hardly done right by del Toro.
However, even beyond their underappreciated vision as auteurs, there is a singular quality that unifies both Snyder and del Toro under one creative umbrella.

Let’s toast actor Tom Hiddleston for his own Disney+ streaming show “Loki.” It focuses on the wily and witty adventures of his God of Mischief and Norse deity that he has played in no less than six Marvel Comic films, ranging from 2011’s “Thor” with Chris Hemsworth in the title role to 2019’s “Avengers: End Game.” The British actor initially started his career on the stage and is currently Tony-nominated for his lead role in a 2020 revival of Harold Pinter’s play “Betrayal.” In 2016, he was up for two Emmys as lead actor and as a producer of AMC’s limited series “The Night Manager.”
But Hiddleston also has a substantial list of films that don’t involve creating mayhem as Thor’s nemesis and adopted brother. Tour our photo gallery with a list of 10 of the actor’s most notable movie performances, ranked worst to best, including “Midnight in Paris,...

Netflix revealed the first footage from Guillermo del Toro’s passion project, “Frankenstein,” which he wrote, directed and produced. And it is a doozy.
As part of Wednesday’s Next on Netflix event in Los Angeles, the streaming giant previewed a little more than two minutes of footage from the upcoming movie, which will debut this November. The footage opens with Dr. Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac) attempting to reanimate a partial corpse in an operating theater. A bunch of Victorian doctors tut-tut his experiment, which involves a torso and head (it almost looks like a classic automaton).
Christoph Waltz shows up saying that he will give the frazzled young doctor unlimited resources, and we see Frankenstein surveying a battlefield, picking out parts. (There is a particularly grisly moment where we see the doctor slicing through muscle like it’s roast beef.) There are glimpses of the operating table and the creature,...

Despite being one of the most praised visionaries of all time like Guillermo del Toro, Denis Villeneuve has met with one too many setbacks throughout his star-studded career. For one, he has delivered masterpieces that turned out to be box-office disasters, and has faced some disappointing snubs, like his recent Oscar snub for his epic blockbuster Dune: Part Two.

But del Toro, another mastermind filmmaker in the entertainment industry, seems to have figured out just what went wrong with Villeneuve’s directing. To be more precise, as understood from the director’s explanation, the reason why Villeneuve’s real masterpiece from 2017, Blade Runner 2049, failed at the box office was its massive budget.

Exclusive: If there’s one takeaway from the holiday box office season, audiences couldn’t quit Focus Features’ period gothic horror movie Nosferatu.
The Robert Eggers-directed title is now the Universal specialty label’s second highest-grossing release at the domestic box office at $84.4 million, overtaking 2005’s three-time Oscar winner Brokeback Mountain ($83M) and ranking behind the studio’s top-grossing title ever, 2019’s Downton Abbey ($96.8M). On a global basis, Nosferatu ranks as Focus’ seventh highest-grossing title with north of $142M worldwide.
Also noteworthy, Nosferatu is reaching its great heights at the B.O. sans award noms from the Golden Globes or Oscars (which have yet to be announced) or festival buzz; such lynchpins were in part responsible for the breakout success of 2005’s Brokeback Mountain, Ang Lee’s gay-themed Western.
Focus also has bragging rights in that Nosferatu beats the domestic haul of any title, including horror, when compared with its specialty rival A24.

Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro has created his own niche in Hollywood with a number of stellar stories. From The Shape of Water and the Hellboy franchise, del Toro has often shown an ability to create intense narratives, set in some surreal worlds.

The surprise success of Nosferatu means the timing couldn't be better for Hammer Horror to stage a glorious resurrection. Gothic horror movies like the classic Universal Monsters or the output of Britain's Hammer Films used to dominate the genre, once upon a time. Hammer franchises like the Christopher Lee Dracula movies or their Frankenstein series leaned into their Gothic origins, but the arrival of more modern, psychological chillers like Rosemary's Baby left the genre very dated in later years.
Modern horror tends to be defined by the likes of A24, but the occasional Gothic horror effort like Crimson Peak or even The Fall of the House of Usher occasionally breaks through. That's what makes the success of Robert Egger's Nosferatu remake so exciting. On the surface, the movie's retro feel and Gothic tone would have been considered offputting to modern viewers; instead, Nosferatu has grossed over $100 million worldwide (via...

As I approached her Friday night at her table where well-wishers were congratulating her on being this year’s recipient of the 38th American Cinematheque Award, Jessica Chastain caught my eye and immediately grabbed me and exclaimed, “Can you believe this? Can you believe this?, I am so stressed out tonight. I have never been so stressful. This is like going to your own funeral, ” she laughed before I told her she has had a remarkable career to date and deserves this kind of career recognition that the Cinematheque gives for those they define in mid-career. Chastain isn’t even 50 yet. She told me she knew she might get emotional but was going to do everything she could not to cry when delivering her speech. For this rabid film fan getting this honor from an organization that lives and breathes movies and their continued restoration and health, it was a very big deal.

Jessica Chastain highlighted the importance of female voices while being honored at the 38th Annual American Cinematheque Awards on Friday evening at the Beverly Hilton.
In her acceptance speech, Chastain detailed the struggles of her childhood. She was the first woman in her family without a teenage pregnancy as well as the first to graduate high school and attend college. Chastain studied at Julliard thanks to a scholarship funded by Robin Williams, who received the American Cinematheque Award in 1988.
“We existed on the margins of society, but theater became my lifeline,” Chastain said. “It was a way to feel seen, to use my voice and to break free from the expectations that have bound my family for generations. I became determined to escape the cycle.”

Jessica Chastain was honored with the American Cinematheque Award on Friday night for her impressive body of work and used her moment to reflect on the early days of her journey to becoming an Oscar-winning actress.
Taking the stage at The Beverly Hilton hotel, the star noted how her great-grandmother, grandmother, aunt and mother all became mothers before they were 17, forced to drop out of school and give up their career aspirations to support their families. Chastain said her mother was just 22 and caring for three young children on her own, as the family faced evictions and she went to school with basic needs unmet.

The 2012 movie Zero Dark Thirty is a gripping political thriller that was highly successful at the box office and was nominated for and won several awards, including an Academy Award for Best Sound Editing and a Best Actress Golden Globe for Chastain's performance. Because of its gritty portrayal of real events, Zero Dark Thirty is considered one of the best movies of the 2010s, and its streaming availability has brought it back into popularity.
The movie depicts a dramatized version of the US military's hunt for Osama bin Laden in the decade following the September 11 attacks. Zero Dark Thirty primarily follows Maya, a CIA intelligence analyst, in her work to track bin Laden as she interacts with different CIA and US Navy teams. While Maya is the primary character, Zero Dark Thirty features a broad and impressive cast of well-known actors who take inspiration from real figures in recent US history.

An adaptation of the classic Mary Shelley novel Frankenstein has long been a dream project for director Guillermo del Toro, the filmmaker with such credits as Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water, Hellboy, and Blade II. He’s been talking about it for at least 17 years – and now he’s actually making it! After previous attempts to get the project going fell through, Netflix stepped up to let del Toro make the Frankenstein movie he’s been dreaming of. They haven’t announced a release date for the film yet, but while we wait for that news to come along, here’s Everything We Know About Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein:
Long Road To Production
Del Toro has named Frankenstein as his favorite novel, and in 2007, he told us that the project he “would kill to make” is a faithful “Miltonian tragedy” version of Frankenstein. He said that he...

Guillermo del Toro has a way of turning dark and fantastical worlds into something magical. His films often flip the script, making monsters the misunderstood heroes and humans the real villains. Over the years, he’s earned critical acclaim and a dedicated fan base, picking up Oscars for The Shape of Water and Pinocchio. Interestingly, much of his inspiration comes from unlikely sources, including Guillermo del Toro’s favorite Kubrick films, Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut—two movies that reveal a side of Kubrick not everyone appreciates.
In a 2015 interview with Little White Lies during the release of Crimson Peak, del Toro revealed that his favorite Kubrick films are two that often get overlooked: Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut. “I like the Kubrick that nobody likes,” he said, pointing out that these aren’t the iconic blockbusters like 2001: A Space Odyssey or The Shining. Instead, they’re quieter,...

Horror movies about ghosts are as classic as it gets for seasonal Halloween scares, and a few of them are even spooky enough to warrant an R-rating. Despite their ubiquity as horror movie villains, ghosts rarely break the boundaries of PG-13, relying more on tension, gore, and eerie sights than straight-up gore, as is the case with many other horror genres such as slasher movies. However, a select few are able to break the boundaries of spectral scares far enough to be branded as true R-rated horror movies, suitable only for the most fright-forward audiences.
Ghost movies can achieve an R-rating through a few different means. Sometimes, the subject matter or circumstances revolving around a specter's death can be drastic or macabre enough to warrant an R-rating on their own. In other cases, the best ghost movies are simply so frightening in their depiction of wraiths that they require the rating through sheer terror.

It's finally here! October, the best month of the year, especially if you're a horror movie fan. Any time of year is the right time to watch a horror movie, but there's something extra special about watching horror movies as we draw closer and closer to Halloween. And to help you get into the spirit of the season, this month's horror streaming roundup is all about ghost movies! Not just haunted house movies, mind you — but movies about ghosts and all their spooky antics. I like all horror subgenres. Vampires? Hell yes. Slashers? Absolutely. Monsters? Yep! But of all the various types of horror movies, movies about ghosts are my personal favorite. I can't say that I believe in ghosts, but like Fox Mulder, I want to believe. Until some sort of ghostly evidence presents itself to me, I'll stick with the movies. So grab your candy corn, carve a pumpkin or two,...

Mexican-born auteur Guillermo del Toro hit the Oscar jackpot with his fantastical love story “The Shape of Water” (2017), which took home four prizes including Best Picture and Best Director. But that’s just one of many eye-popping fantasies he has crafted throughout his career. Let’s take a look back at all 12 of del Toro’s films, ranked worst to best.
Del Toro made his feature directing debut with the Spanish-language horror drama “Cronos” (1993), which established him as a maker of dark, visually-stunning fright-fests. The film wrote him a ticket to Hollywood, where he helmed the creepy chiller “Mimic” (1997). Over the next two decades, he would bounce back-and-forth between mainstream American productions and more personal stories in his native language.
It was for “Pan’s Labyrinth” (2006), a fable about a young Mexican girl escaping into a terrifying fantasy realm during the falangist Spain of 1944, that del Toro reaped his first Oscar bid for Best Original Screenplay.

What are some of the movies that come to mind if somebody mentions the word “siblings”? To be specific, movies with plots that hinge on the sibling dynamic instead of just having siblings in it. If you pick from the crime drama genre, there are Deewar, A Better Tomorrow, and Fiza. If you move towards the action genre, there’s Main Hoon Na, Karan Arjun, and Warrior. If you look at horror films, you’ll get Crimson Peak, Evil Dead Rise, and Nope. If fantasy is your thing, then there’s The Chronicles of Narnia franchise, the Spy Kids franchise, and Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. If you are wondering about step siblings, then you have Cruel Intentions and Step Brothers. And if you want to go into the realm of taboo, you can try out Close My Eyes. The rise of spirtualism, mediums, and séances in the 1800s is an endlessly fascinating topic, especially when you consider that, for all of the people that were committing fraud, what if some of them were really contacting the dead? Having read the first issue of Séance in the Asylum, I am very excited to read more, and I was just as thrilled to catch up with Clay McLeod Chapman to talk all about the new series.
The mid-late 1800s are such a fascinating time when it comes to mysticism and the occult. What inspired the idea behind Séance in the Asylum?
I had two guiding lights for Séance in the Asylum. First, I’ve always been a fan of the Fox Sisters. I’m dying to write something for them, about them, some day. I had a feature in development for years and it just fizzled… but I’ve been...

From One Piece to Bleach, most anime are jumping on the bandwagon of live-action adaptations. Kentaro Miura wished for his series’ live-action adaptation. However, with his untimely and sudden death, this remained unfulfilled. The mangaka pictured Guillermo Del Toro as the perfect director to recreate Berserk.

However, there has been no confirmation of a live-action movie so far. While Toro hasn’t made an official statement, there might be an alternative. Although it may not live up to Miura’s wish, Quentin Tarantino could direct the movie. Furthermore, the acclaimed director would notch up the adaptation.
Quentin Tarantino would bring out the explicit and dark nature of Berserk through his direction.
Quentin Tarantino is one of the most celebrated directors in Hollywood. His notable works include Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, and Kill Bill. His movies outline blood, gore, and violence perfectly.

Guillermo del Toro's mecha vs kaiju beat-em-up blockbuster "Pacific Rim" is still his biggest commercial hit, but the sequel "Pacific Rim: Uprising" is largely considered a wash. Neither del Toro nor star Charlie Hunnam returned for "Uprising," which makes it extra easy to write off.
Hunnam played Raleigh Becket, a pilot of the "Jaeger" mecha Gipsy Danger, which was designed to kill enormous extradimensional monsters. In an interview with Inverse, when asked if he'd go back for a potential "Pacific Rim 3," Hunnam suggested it would need to be del Toro calling him back: "I would do anything that Guillermo was doing. If Guillermo invites me to do 'Pacific Rim 3,' I'll be there, or anything else he wants me to do."

Opening in 1912, Revue Cinema has been a landmark of the Roncesvalles area of Toronto for over 100 years, making it the city’s longest-standing movie house. However, back in June, it looked as if the beloved revival house would be forced to shutter following a lease dispute between Revue Film Society, the non-profit that operates the theater, and the building’s longtime landlords, Daniel and Leticia Mullin. After refusing to extend the theater’s lease another five years as they had in the past, the Mullins informed the board of the non-profit that they personally would be taking control of Revue. Acting quickly the Society were able to win an interim court injunction allowing them to continue running the theater until the matter could be handled before a judge at a later date in October.
However, before the case made its way through the legal system, the Society and the Mullins...

Serial producer Ryan Murphy, the man behind “American Horror Story,” “Feud,” “Pose” and many more, is already sharpening his knife for the third in his “Monster” series, which focuses on serial killers. With “Monsters: The Lyle and Eric Menendez Story” debuting on Netflix later this week (and second in the gruesome collection after “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” from 2022), Murphy disclosed at the red carpet premiere that next in the queue will be something of a classic—a look at Ed Gein, the Wisconsin killer whose murders in the 1950s loosely inspired the Alfred Hitchcock film “Psycho,” and, when more of the repulsive particulars became known, inspired Tobe Hooper’s “Texas Chain Saw Massacre,” the Buffalo Bill character from “Silence of the Lambs,” and Rob Zombie’s “House of 1000 Corpses.”

Horror film enthusiast and director Guillermo Del Toro is currently at work, bringing his new incarnation of Frankenstein to life. And while he is in production, the director shares with fans that he’s also staying at an old 1800s hotel, which seemingly gave him the creeps as he felt he couldn’t stay there anymore. Del Toro posted to his fans, “Update-. I can only say:. Nothingbhas happened yet, but the atmosphere in the room is opressive and I am not gonna spend much more time there. It may be suggestion, but at this point I kept it but am sleeping in another room- I need 6 hours of sleep to have a good shooting day- Im stopping there early and late in the day- but something is in that room with me… If anything happens or Nothing does expect one or two more updates.”

Guillermo Del Toro believes Crimson Peak was doomed by being marketed solely as a horror film, rather than emphasizing its romance and mystery elements. The film received mixed reviews from audiences, criticizing its lack of spookiness, leading to a less-than-stellar box office performance. Despite the disappointing performance, the film director's career experienced a resurgence, with subsequent successful films and multiple Oscar nominations.
The poor box office performance of Crimson Peak is discussed by the film's director. Crimson Peak is a 2015 supernatural horror film directed by Guillermo del Toro, telling the story of what happens when an author is confronted by a mysterious outsider soon after a family tragedy. Guillermo del Toro recalls the moment he realised his gothic romance Crimson Peak was destined to not find its audience.
Given the incredible quality of his filmography, 2015’s Crimson Peak is sometimes viewed as a misstep for Guillermo del Toro. The dark gothic romance earned $75 million from a $57 million budget and picked up generally favourable reviews from critics. For a filmmaker who has won Oscars and produced some incredibly revered films, that does leave Crimson Peak as something as an outlier.
It should be added though that the film still very much has an audience that will tell you what a great watch it is. Film Stories is one of them, given that we put it on our list of 11 creepy and unsettling films that aren’t traditional horror movies back in 2022.
According to del Toro, that ‘s the reason why the film didn’t perform as well as he’d hoped.

Guillermo del Toro’s 2015 film, “Crimson Peak,” is a lot of things—a gothic romance, a showcase of amazing acting—but it is not a horror film. However, when you have a filmmaker like del Toro and an expensive film you want to sell, you might take some liberties in the marketing of the movie. But according to the filmmaker, that’s what ultimately doomed the movie.

Well, now we know what film Guillermo del Toro was referring to when he reflected on his movies being “hobbled” at the box office by bad studio marketing.
After del Toro tweeted that in his 30-year career, he has had “three wonderful films hampered and hobbled by misguided marketing,” it turns out that “Crimson Peak” is one of them. (The other del Toro has publicly said is his 2012 animated film “Rise of the Guardians.”)

The forever Hollywood heartthrob Tom Hiddleston has embodied innumerable roles throughout his commendably stellar career, spanning heroic, anti-heroic, and villainous roles. But while his performance as Loki in the MCU will arguably eternally rank as his best performance of all time, it seems he could have found a prominent position in the Harry Potter saga as well.

Perhaps the biggest shocker in yesterday's season finale of The Acolyte came less than 15 minutes into the episode when Darth Plagueis, the Sith Lord who we know one day trains Palpatine, is shown watching The Stranger and Osha from afar.
What his intentions may be moving forward is hard to predict; the villain could be Qimir's Master or a rival Sith looking to recruit or destroy the former Jedi Padawan so he can get his hands on Osha and finally figure out how to create life.
Talking to IndieWire (via SFFGazette.com), The Acolyte showrunner Leslye Headland confirmed, "Plagueis was always in the finale, in every version. There was a version where he was the button of the finale [instead of Yoda]. You want to feel Osha’s triumph. You want to feel her joining forces with The Stranger. Plagueis stepped on [that moment]."
