Breaking the fourth wall is nothing new, but some TV shows find innovative ways to directly address their audience. The term "breaking the fourth wall" is used to describe a moment in a TV show, movie, or any other work of narrative fiction in which the characters address the fact that they aren't real, and that they are being watched by an audience. The term comes from the theater, where the "fourth wall" is the invisible barrier which exists between the performers on stage and the audience.
There are countless TV shows and movies which break the fourth wall. Some famous examples include Deadpool, Ferris Bueller's Day Off and dozens of Bugs Bunny cartoons. The technique is mainly used in comedy, since exposing the artifice of fiction often shatters the suspension of disbelief and reflects the absurdity of the situation back onto the viewer. While it can be tiresome if it's used carelessly,...

Over the years, Sex and the City has become synonymous with Sarah Jessica Parker, whose portrayal of Carrie Bradshaw became iconic over the show’s six seasons. With the series and films focusing on her girl gang’s closeness and her love life, there were a lot of cameos from many popular actors. However, the one face that everyone expected to see was the 59-year-old’s husband, Matthew Broderick. Unfortunately, that was just a fever dream that never ended up coming true.

Although Broderick never made an appearance on the show or in the films, it was not from the producer’s and Parker’s lack of trying. In fact, the 62-year-old recently opened up about a role that was offered to him that he had turned down.

Matthew Broderick may not have appeared in Sex and the City — but he wanted to.
The actor and husband of Sarah Jessica Parker, who starred in the HBO series, stopped by James Corden’s This Life of Mine show on SiriusXM. During his conversation with the former late night host, the Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star was asked if it was true he was asked to be in the romance drama multiple times and opted not to.
“Whenever there was a part that I could do, I couldn’t do it is really all that happened,” he explained. “But also sometimes, it was like, ‘Do you want to do two days as the premature ejaculator?’ And I’d be like, ‘You know, I don’t know. It’s just kind of embarrassing.’”
While it would’ve seemed likely that Parker approached him about guest starring in her show, that was never the case.

SXSW Sydney Headliners
Experimental music film “Pavements” and offbeat comedy “Nightbitch” are among five titles designated as ‘headliners’ of the film section on the upcoming SXSW Sydney festival.
“Pavements,” which premiered in Venice, is an experimental hybrid of narrative, scripted, documentary, musical, and metatextual elements from director Alex Ross Perry about the indie rock outfit, Pavement.
“Nightbitch,” which debuted in Toronto, is a darkly comedic fairy tale about a stay-at-home mother, portrayed by Amy Adams, who transforms into a dog.
Others getting the gala treatment include Max & Sam Eggers’ new A24 horror “The Front Room,” starring pop star Brandy as a newly-pregnant woman facing off against her mother-in-law; “Smile 2,” by Parker Finn; and Jason Reitman’s “Saturday Night,” based on the true story of what happened behind the scenes in the 90 minutes leading up to the first broadcast of “Saturday Night Live.”

Hulu has to be pretty pleased with its list of new releases for June 2024. That’s because it’s about to be the summer of The Bear once again.
The Bear season 3 premieres all of its episodes on June 27 on Hulu. This FX dramedy has proven to be one of the most successful shows of its era. Jeremy Allen White stars as Carmy Berzatto, a world-famous chef who returns home to Chicago to help his floundering family restaurant after the death of his brother. Season 2 saw The Original Beef of Chicagoland crew transform the spot into fine dining establishment The Bear. It ruled. So will season 3 probably.
FX is responsible for the other major TV release on Hulu this month. Clipped premieres on June 4 and is about the scandalous real life story of Donald Sterling, the awful owner of the basketball team the Los Angeles Clippers. Another intriguing TV option...

The Breakfast Club has some problematic elements that don't hold up well today, such as the use of slurs and derogatory terms. Bender's behavior towards Claire in The Breakfast Club, including sexual harassment, is deplorable and uncomfortable for viewers to watch. Despite its iconic status, The Breakfast Club's romance storylines undermine the message of not letting presumptions about others stop you from befriending them.
The Breakfast Club was first released in theaters on February 7, 1985, and almost 40 years later, its seen as a treasured classic with some pretty big flaws. There are some wild details behind the making of The Breakfast Club, so it isnt entirely shocking that some of the material that made it to the big screen has been viewed as problematic. The Breakfast Club followed Sixteen Candles, another John Hughes and Molly Ringwald movie. Though The Breakfast Club is generally regarded as less controversial than Sixteen Candles,...

The next installment of the long lasting Marvel Cinematic Universe has a lot of pressure behind it. Not only is this the first time the X-Men series will be brought into the MCU after being at 20th Century Fox for two decades, but the previous year’s films were seen as either disappointments or outright failures.
With the film only a couple months away the film is reportedly getting some last minute reshoots to try and make sure all of the pieces fall into place. Marvel is under a lot of pressure to try and save the MCU from disaster and the third Deadpool film may be the one to save it.
Some fans believe the reshoots might incorporate more cameos than they were able to before. Whether that is true or not, we are already expected to have a bunch of Marvel cameos from across the multiverse.

Nicole Richie and Simone Joy Jones reflected on their time working together on the new film Don’t Tell Mom The Babysitter’s Dead in their new uInterview.
The film is based on a 1991 comedy that follows five siblings who are left alone all summer after their mom leaves town and their evil babysitter dies unexpectedly.
The duo recounted their experience working together in scenes where Jones’ character plays Richie’s character’s assistant.
“It’s amazing honestly,” Jones told uInterview founder Erik Meers. “And the thing I remember most is the type of person she is off-screen. She is just so kind and so real and so genuine. Earlier this month, we shared the news that Anchor Bay Entertainment – which used to be a major player in the horror world back in the late ’90s and early 2000s, when they gave DVD releases to films like the Evil Dead trilogy, George A. Romero’s Dead trilogy, the Sleepaway Camp franchise, The Hills Have Eyes, The Car, Maniac, Prom Night, some of the Hellraisers, Halloweens, and much more – is being revived, with their first two releases puppet horror film Abruptio and Dinner with Leatherface, a documentary that looks at the life, career, and legacy of original Leatherface actor Gunnar Hansen. This article contains spoilers for Curb Your Enthusiasm season 12 episode 4 “Disgruntled.”
In its 12th and final season, Curb Your Enthusiasm has finally revealed its true colors. In addition to being a highly-choreographed comedic machine with improvised dialogue, the Larry David series is also something far more recognizable: a high school comedy.
Much like Saved by the Bell, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, or even Animal House, Curb Your Enthusiasm features a regressive institution and a hero who battles against it to establish their individuality. It’s just that, on Curb Your Enthusiasm, the regressive institution isn’t a high school or college but the Ocean View Country Club and that hero isn’t a high school senior but a senior citizen.

The Ferris Bueller's Day Off spinoff, Sam & Victor's Day Off, is in development and has great talent involved. The spinoff avoids the mistake of a remake or direct sequel and offers a fresh and unique perspective on the original story. Sam & Victor's Day Off has connections to the original movie but is set to be its own thing, likely to succeed as a spinoff.
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is officially getting a spinoff, and while it might sound like a weird decision, it looks to be on its way to success. Ronald Washington, one of the two defendants standing trial for allegedly killing Jam Master Jay, chuckled in court on Wednesday when his attorney, Susan Kellman, invoked Harry Potter in her closing arguments.
The moment came as she discussed the prosecution’s theory that Washington and the other defendant, Karl Jordan Jr., were waiting on a fire escape to enter the recording studio where the DJ, whose real name was Jason Mizell, was killed. She said it was impossible, since the two men would have been seen on surveillance video. Then she paused dramatically.

Who’s ready for a joyride? The long-rumored Ferris Bueller’s Day Off spin-off, Sam and Victor’s Day Off, is ready to twist and shout with David Katzenberg at the helm. According to industry insider Jeff Sneider, Katzenberg is buckling up for a film featuring the two mischievous valets who borrowed Cameron’s father’s Ferrari to rip through the streets of Chicago joyously! In his newsletter, Sneider says the duo’s adventure takes place on a single day, with Sam and Victor grabbing life by the short and curlies for a fast-paced tear through city streets.
Sam and Victor’s Day Off will be Katzenberg’s feature directorial debut after helming numerous television episodes for various shows. Famously known in the industry for directing 41 episodes of The Goldbergs, Katzenberg’s director credits extend to Young Rock, 9-1-1: Lone Star, The Mighty Ducks: Game Changers, Schooled, Riverdale, and more.

John Hughes’ 1986 classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off holds a revered place in cinematic history, cherished for its timeless charm and witty humor despite originating from the sitcom genre. However, the prospect of a spin-off film, tentatively titled Sam and Victor’s Day Off, has thrust the beloved original into the spotlight once more.
With Paramount Pictures at the helm, David Katzenberg is set to direct the anticipated follow-up.
Ferris Bueler’s Day Off
Yet, the reaction from die-hard fans of the original has been less than enthusiastic, casting doubt on the spin-off’s potential success. Critics argue that the decision to create a spinoff movie is motivated purely by financial gain rather than artistic integrity.
The sentiment among fans underscores apprehension that the spin-off could veer into the realm of disappointment, failing to capture the essence that made the original a cult classic.

Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, it all comes to an end as Rachel Reeves searches for scares in the suburbs.
In the back half of the 1980s, the American suburbs experienced a resurgence in popularity. As global instabilities stabilized and economies began to boom, moving to the suburbs became a sign of financial and professional success. Primarily populated by young families, the suburbs also became associated with traditional family values, safety, and community. However, as any true crime enthusiast knows, some things (and some people) are not always as innocent as they appear.
With Hollywood quick to hop on this trend train, what resulted was a wealth of interesting Frankenstein-style film ideas that simultaneously displayed the absurd excess and nostalgic conservatism the...

Post-credit scenes have been used in films from various genres, not just superhero movies, to engage and interact with the audience. The first film to feature a post-credit scene was the spy comedy "The Silencers" in 1966, which parodied James Bond movies. Post-credit scenes can be creative and dynamic, serving to tease future entries, provide a final joke, or tell a follow-up story in a shorter format.
Post-credit scenes may have become synonymous with superhero movies, but plenty of other genres use the space after the credits in ingenious ways. Post-credit scenes have spiked in popularity since franchises like the MCU, Dceu and Sony Spider-Verse Universe started including one or two clips during the credits to build anticipation for future projects. However, superhero movies were not even close to being the first genre of film to use a post-credit scene to further interact and engage with the audience.

Slow-burn horror movies can be impactful, but some take it too far, depriving the story of meaningful stakes. "Speak No Evil" borrows from "Funny Games," but its bleak and unoriginal satire leaves viewers unimpressed. "Antebellum" is too bleak and predictable, forcing viewers to endure unnecessary violence before a predictable reveal.
While a lot of horror movies are dark, some entries in the genre make their stories so brutally bleak that they end up feeling ironically unscary. It isn’t easy to get the tonal balance right when making a horror movie. Horror movies are designed to scare audiences, but a movie that aims to be relentlessly terrifying from start to finish is likely to feel more exhausting than legitimately scary. Less is often more when it comes to scares, and sometimes slow-burn horror movies can prove more impactful than their more aggressive counterparts despite the efficacy of a well-timed jump scare.

When Jennifer Grey received the script for A Real Pain, she was — like most of the country — deeply entrenched in the final episodes of Succession. The actress, who is best known for her work in movies like Dirty Dancing and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, was considering a role in the story (written and directed by Jesse Eisenberg) about two cousins who join a Jewish heritage tour in Poland to reconnect with their late grandmother and visit the town that she fled before the war. Kieran Culkin was already attached to star as the lead opposite Eisenberg, and Grey says she was excited about the possibility of working with the actor responsible for some of the show’s finest work.
“And then I read the script, and I went from excited to elated,” she told THR during a panel at the St. Regis Deer Valley, sponsored by Screenvision. “It’s a very deep movie,...

Cameron goes through a significant change throughout Ferris Bueller's Day Off, while Ferris remains the same carefree guy. Despite not changing as much as Cameron, Ferris plays a crucial role in helping Cameron gain self-confidence and self-worth. Both Ferris and Cameron have character arcs in the film, although Cameron's transformation is more evident and drastic.
Although Ferris Bueller’s Day Off is all about the title character’s adventures in the city, he isn’t the movie’s main character – and here’s why. John Hughes was the mind behind some of the most popular teen movies from the 1980s, among them Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, starring Matthew Broderick as the title character. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off took the audience to a Chicago suburb, where two months before graduation, Ferris Bueller decided to take the day off and skip school (for the ninth time that semester) by faking illness.

Succession star Alan Ruck reveals in an exclusive with uInterview his thoughts on the show’s finale.
While he did enjoy acting on the show he noted that, “[creator] Jesse [Armstrong]’s right to end it now. I think we’ll go out on a real high. I think it’s the best season we’ve done, really, and then we’ve done some pretty good stuff, you know. But I think it’s our best season. I think he’s smart to end it now, we’ll go out on a high note. I’ll miss everybody but that’s how it goes.”
Ruck has played Connor Roy since the show started in 2018. His character is the eldest son of Logan Roy and Logan’s first wife, whom he divorced. Throughout the show, he and his siblings, Roman, Kendall and Shiv, fight for control of their father’s company, Waystar Royco.

“Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it,” like Matthew Broderick almost missed the opportunity to star in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off because of complications with the film’s director, John Hughes. During an appearance on The Hollywood Reporter’s “It Happened in Hollywood” podcast, Broderick said he and Hughes butted heads in the lead-up to filming the beloved comedy.
“He was nervous [the film] wouldn’t come out right,” Broderick said about Hughes’s apprehension toward his performance. According to Broderick, Hughes’s apprehension stemmed from early costume test footage featuring him and co-stars Mia Sara, Alan Ruck, and Jennifer Grey walking around Chicago streets. Broderick says Hughes thought the trio lacked chemistry and were boring to watch.

In a new interview, Matthew Broderick says he would occasionally “butt heads” with John Hughes during the making of the 1986 comedy classic Ferris Bueller’s Day Off.
“He was not easygoing in some ways,” Broderick, 61, says of the late writer-director legend on The Hollywood Reporter’s It Happened in Hollywood podcast. “He was nervous it wouldn’t come out right.”
Broderick fondly recalls spending hours in Hughes’ swimming pool in Brentwood around the time of the filming, “smoking cigarettes and eating potato chips” as they discussed the role that would eventually shoot the actor, then 23, to superstardom.
But things got off to a bumpy start when filming began on location in Chicago in September 1985.
“I remember we did a costume test early on,” Broderick recalls. “We walked around the streets of Chicago in our costumes and they filmed us — me, Alan [Ruck], Jennifer Grey and Mia [Sara].
“That was a big drama.

“Like & Share” from Indonesia’s Gina S. Noer was named the best picture and collected the Grand Prix on Sunday at the Osaka Asian Film Festival.
“All of us on the jury were struck by the film’s clear and powerful message, which affirms young women’s sexual curiosity and desire while clearly saying no to sexual violence. The style of the film is also original. The sweet, poppy feeling that fascinates the audience in the first half of the film becomes darker as the story progresses, making us shudder. “Like & Share,” with its strong message and brilliant direction, is a film that needs to be seen now more than ever,” said the jury in a statement.

For the vast majority of people, getting a haircut is an essential task to which we rarely give a second thought. However, it's the intense subject of Fu Tien-Yu's latest film, “Day Off”. Maintaining the location library of 20,000 photos is one of Illinois Film Office assistant deputy director Louis Ferrara’s favorite parts of his job. “Producers always laugh when I say that, but it’s true,” he says.
The massive quantity of location photos are categorized into various curated files so when productions have a need, the film office can readily supply whatever they desire.
“We scout locations on a regular basis to freshen up the library,” says Ferrara, noting that they also send letters to homeowners and businesses to help with continually growing the resource. There’s no time wasted when productions choose to film in Illinois, and no need to retread the same locations.
Of course, there’s no better stand in for Chicago than, well, Chicago. The city’s iconic sites have appeared in multiple shows as “themselves” over the years. The iconic elevated trains and platforms are in...
