Sorry, Hollywood. Indie studios have officially taken over the poster game. Of the 25 films listed below, I can count the number of legacy studios on one hand (even that’s putting Focus Features under the Universal umbrella). Yes, some of that has to do with a strike-enforced lack of releases beyond true tentpoles and their glossy, Photoshopped marketing campaigns, but it’s also a continued reluctance to take risks in all facets of production. I get that they don’t need to––those types of films sell themselves––but a bit of ingenuity still increases public perception.

Some of it probably has to do with the strain of contractual obligations as far as billing and credits go with blockbuster fare (why most of the best posters are teasers rather than finals), but there are ways around such stipulations if you’re willing to push the envelope. This year I lost my London Film Festival virginity and amongst some of the incredible films I was enthralled by I caught my number 1 for this year’s Top Ten. One of my favorite things about the end of the year is the "year in review" movie mashups that come out, reminding us of all of the great movies that came out in the previous year. They're incredible little odes to cinema, and the "movie trailer mashups" by YouTuber Sleepy Skunk are easily among the very best. Ever since King Kong swatted biplanes from the top of the Empire State Building in 1933, hairy creatures have occupied a place of honor in the cinematic pantheon. And in many cases, the Academy has recognized that fact: The original “King Kong” was shamefully overlooked at the Oscars, but the second-ever special award for makeup was given out in 1968 to “Planet of the Apes” — and the first time the award existed as a regular competitive category, the winner was Rick Baker for “An American Werewolf in London,” with subsequent winners including “Quest for Fire” (hairy cavemen!), “Harry and the Hendersons” (Bigfoot!), “The Wolfman” (another werewolf!) and, um, “Frida” (unibrow!).

Exclusive: While looking to break into the Oscars race with his glowingly reviewed sophomore feature A Real Pain, Jesse Eisenberg has set up his next film, an untitled musical comedy to star Julianne Moore (The Room Next Door) and Paul Giamatti (The Holdovers).

The film follows a shy woman who is unexpectedly cast in a local production of an original musical. Under the spell of the strong-willed and enigmatic director, she loses herself in the role and the high-stakes world of this community theater production. The 2024 Hollywood Music in Media Awards were handed out on Wednesday night, Nov. 20, during a ceremony that took place at The Avalon in Hollywood. Winners were decided by the Hollywood Music in Media Academy, which consists of journalists, filmmakers, performing artists, publicists, and other industry professionals.

The big winner was Jacques Audiard‘s Netflix musical “Emilia Pérez,” which claimed Best Music-Themed Film, Biopic, or Musical, where it beat other formidable awards contenders like “A Complete Unknown” and “Wicked.” The film’s star Zoe Saldaña also won Best Song (Onscreen Performance) for “El Mal,” defeating Timothee Chalamet playing Bob Dylan‘s “Blowin’ in the Wind” in “A Complete Unknown” and Cynthia Erivo belting out “Defying Gravity” in “Wicked.” Lastly, the film won Best Score (Feature Film) for Clément Ducol and Camille, bringing its total to three, making it the most awarded film of the year.

Jesse Eisenberg picked up the Indie Star Award at Poland’s American Film Festival and met with the local audience to talk about sophomore directorial effort “A Real Pain.”

After a live performance of the song “The Creatures of Nature” from Sasquatch Sunset at Deadline’s Sound & Screen event, the film’s composers, risk-taking band The Octopus Project, revealed that they also recorded a version relayed entirely in bigfoot grunts recorded by the film’s leading lady, actress Riley Keough, who sang English language lyrics for the song.

The film from the quirky, adventurous directing duo the Zellner Bros. (David and Nathan Zellner), features Keough and Jesse Eisenberg as members of a roaming, dwindling tribe of sasquatches marked the latest collaboration between the siblings and the band, who’ve worked together on numerous projects. Both filmmakers and composers thrive on raising the out-there bar on one another, resulting in the alternate grunt track.

When [Keough] recorded the vocals for this, they also did some Adr for her grunts – and there’s no dialogue in the film whatsoever, so it’s just grunting.

Channing Tatum, Dave Bautista, Zoë Kravitz, Léa Seydoux, and Riley Keough have joined the already announced Cate Blanchett and Steven Yeun for Alpha Gang, forming one of most fun ensembles we’ve seen in a while. The alien invasion comedy hails from Sasquatch Sunset directors David and Nathan Zellner and will go up for sale at next month’s American Film Market.

With so many brilliant names attached to it, we can’t see the film having too many problems being snapped up and following that, production is set to get underway in the spring. The story sounds really fun: ‘taking place in the 1950s, it follows a group of alien invaders as they pretend to be a leather-clad biker gang. Blanchett, who also produces, will play the gang’s leader.

Director David Zellner has credits going back to 1997, when he made his feature directorial debut with the comedy Plastic Utopia, working from a screenplay he wrote with his brother, visual effects artist Nathan Zellner. As of the 2018 Western Damsel, the Zellner Brothers became a directing duo, and in 2020 it was announced that they were going to be making an alien invasion comedy called Alpha Gang, with Andrea Riseborough, Jon Hamm, Nicholas Hoult, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Mackenzie Davis, Sofia Boutella, and Steven Yeun attached to star in the film. But Alpha Gang missed its 2021 production start date and the Zellner Brothers made Sasquatch Sunset instead. Directed by Stuart Stone, “Don’t F**k with Ghosts” follows Stuart Stone and Adam Rodness, a filmmaking duo commissioned to work on a movie about ghosts. In the film, the duo plays fictional versions of themselves, who initially try to get their pitch about the Bigfoot creature commissioned. Not long ago, the Zellner brothers brought up “Sasquatch Sunset,” about the same subject. While this Sundance release uses a fictional narrative about Bigfoot, Stone & Rodness (their versions) wants to make an explorative documentary about these believed-to-be-real creatures. Their financiers don’t see potential in this pitch. So, instead, they want the duo to make a movie about ghosts.

As the old adage goes “nature is red in tooth and claw” but this year’s environmental cinema focuses on a bloodier violence which is far from inevitable. The black and white slapstick comedy Hundreds of Beavers, the gory slasher In a Violent Nature and cryptid movie Sasquatch Sunset all chose to limit or entirely refrain from dialogue in order to offer strange odes to the environment which highlight humanity’s lasting impact on the natural world.

It might be one of the finest pieces of acting of the year so far. Near the end of Sasquatch Sunset, the gloriously weird feature from David and Nathan Zellner, Riley Keough wordlessly conveys a slowly creeping moment of profound existential despair that crushes your heart with its bleakness. It’s all the more impressive that she achieves this using her eyes alone, since her face and body are encased in a thick prosthetic layer of foam and straggly fake hair.

Keough plays one of the family of four sasquatches (the mythical creature also known as bigfoot) that the film follows over the course of a year as the primitive, grunting ape-like creatures lumber through the forests of the Pacific north-west of America.

Disney is hoping to perk up the summer box office with eagerly-anticipated Pixar sequel Inside Out 2 at 684 sites, making it this weekend’s widest new release.

Sony’s “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” debuted atop the U.K. and Ireland box office with £3.8 million ($4.9 million), according to numbers from Comscore.

In second place, in its fourth weekend, Paramount’s “If” collected £866,474 for a running total of £10.8 million. In third position, in its third weekend, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” earned £729,503 for a total of £7.3 million.

In fourth place, in its fifth weekend, Disney’s “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes” added a further £620,911 for a total of £14.3 million. Rounding off the top five was Warner Bros.’ “Furiosa,” which collected £436,983 in its third weekend for a total of £5.5 million.

There were two more debuts in the Top 10. Warner Bros.’ “The Watched” bowed in sixth place with £387,339 and Signature Entertainment’s “The Dead Don’t Hurt” in eighth with £95,827.

Many films have explored the possibility of giant, mythical creatures existing in the wild, from the comedic to the horrific.

In Sasquatch Sunset, directors (and brothers) Nathan and David Zellner point their camera towards the human-like, hairy and surprisingly gentle creatures. And while they aren’t real, the story manages to use these characters to explore some real insights about our relationship to nature. The film follows a four-strong sasquatch family over the course of one year as they roam the woods, but their lives are increasingly complicated by humans and the changing nature of… well, nature.

Bigfoot has not enjoyed much in the way of flattering depictions on the screen; the hairy, seven-foot icon of folklore has largely been a cinematic figure of fun. Think Harry And The Hendersons; the ill-fated ‘King Itchy’ from Monsters, Inc.; or the Sasquatch (played by an uncredited John C. Reilly) that Jack Black hallucinates while tripping on mushrooms in Tenacious D In The Pick Of Destiny. Sasquatch Sunset, from filmmaking brothers David and Nathan Zellner, is entirely unlike any of those interpretations: a bizarre and oddly beautiful new take on the Bigfoot myth.

Shot almost like a mock BBC nature documentary, it contrasts big skies and Californian redwoods with a small group of Sasquatches trying to forge a life in a world that seems confusing and hard. Among them are Jesse Eisenberg and Riley Keough, two entirely unrecognisable A-listers gamely grunting through heavy prosthetics, doing remarkable work from a totally wordless script.

Caroline Lindy’s comedy horror Your Monster won the audience favourite award at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival: London, which ran from June 6-9.

Writer-director Lindy, star Melissa Barrera and producer and actor Kayla Foster were present at the Picturehouse Central cinema venue to accept the award.

It was voted for by thousands of festivalgoers from the 11-strong Sundance London programme.

Luca Guadagnino‘s box-office backspin became one of spring’s moviegoing success stories, and we’re all the luckier for it. Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist‘s love-triangle tennis lark is still playing in plenty of theaters across the country, but if you want another serve, it’s available to rent for $19.99 on VOD. It’s not impossible to imagine a “Challengers” resurgence in the fall: Guadagnino is already an Oscar darling thanks to “Call Me by Your Name,” and Zendaya seems especially poised for top-tier accolades. If nothing else, maybe Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross‘ banger of a score can net the duo’s third trophy.

Despite the lack of dialogue, Sasquatch Sunset has a pretty clear narrative, which turns the story into a four-season tale. It’s often hard to sit through thanks to its extremely gross nature, but it is also quite an experience if you have a thing for a certain kind of weirdness. When Andrew Karpen wants to convince a filmmaker to let him release their movie, he doesn’t blow them away by offering more and more money. For one thing, Bleecker Street, the indie studio he founded in 2014, doesn’t have the financial firepower of an Apple or a Netflix.

“Our pitch is always centered around the kind of experience that they will have with us, knowing that we will be collaborative and transparent,” Karpen says. “I always say, ‘This is not a campaign where you will just be emailed the final poster and trailer and given two tickets to the premiere.’”
