The new Irish road movie “500 Miles” has added three experienced actors to its cast as filming gets underway. The family drama follows two brothers who go on a journey across Ireland to find their estranged grandfather. Irish actress Clare Dunne and British actors Michael Socha and Dexter Sol Ansell have all joined the production.

Dunne is well known for her lead roles in previous Irish films “Herself” and “Kin.” Socha starred in popular television shows like “Once Upon a Time” and “This Is England.” Ansell has an upcoming role in the “Game of Thrones” prequel series. The boys will be played by Bill Nighy as their grandfather and Roman Griffin Davis, who rose to fame in “Jojo Rabbit.” “Game of Thrones” star Maisie Williams also has a role in the movie.

Directed by Morgan Matthews, whose past works include “X+Y” and “Williams,” the film explores family reconciliation against Ireland’s scenic backdrops.

Zygi Kamasa’s True Brit Entertainment has acquired UK rights to Morgan Matthews’s 500 Miles starring Bill Nighy and Jojo Rabbit’s Roman Griffin Davis from Beta Cinema.

Billed as a road movie with heart, 500 Miles follows two young brothers running away from trouble at home in England to reach their estranged grandfather (Nighy) on Ireland’s wild west coast.

The film is being prepped to shoot in Kerry, Ireland in the summer.

Matthews, director of X+Y (A Brilliant Young Mind) and documentary Williams, will direct from a script by Malcolm Campbell, based on the novel Charlie And Me by Mark Lowery.

The Origin Pictures, Port Pictures and Minnow Films project is described as “a thrilling road movie full of heart, wit and wonder.”

“The story follows a broken family forced to come together when 16-year-old Finn (Davis) and his livewire younger brother Charlie run away from trouble at home in England to reach their estranged grandfather (Nighy) on Ireland’s stunning and wild West coast,” according to a plot description.

Matthews is set to direct from a script by Malcolm Campbell (What Richard Did, Herself, Ackley Bridge), based on the novel Charlie and Me by Mark Lowery.

Academy Award nominee Bill Nighy and rising teen actor Roman Griffin Davis are set to co-star in road movie 500 Miles from BAFTA Award-winning director Morgan Matthews.

Beta Cinema has acquired international sales rights to the drama – produced by Origin Pictures, Port Pictures and Minnow Films – and will launch sales at the EFM.

Nighy will co-star as the grandfather of a young runaway played by Davis, who made history in 2019 as the youngest ever Golden Globe nominee for his performance in Taika Waititi’s World War II satire Jojo Rabbit. Recent credits for Nighy include Living, for which he was Oscar nominated in the lead actor category last year.

In what is the closest thing to a modern day ‘Twilight Zone‘, creator/show runner Charlie Booker‘s hypnotic series has managed to captivate audiences in it’s first three seasons. The show – which was originally aired on BBC – was expanded to a six episode format after Netflix picked up the show for it’s third, and now fourth season, and is highly anticipated to say the least.

Born into a gypsy family famed for its boxing prowess, Walsh faced a difficult decision after realising he was gay – stay within a community that cannot accept him, or walk away from the only life that he knows.

BAFTA-winning Matthews, known for his acclaimed documentary work, previously directed 2014’s X+Y (also known as A Brilliant Mind), also from a James Graham screenplay, which starred Asa Butterfield.

A Brilliant Young Mind tells the story of a mathematically gifted British teen on the autism spectrum as he prepares to compete in an international math Olympics.

Nathan (Asa Butterfield) is gifted at math but struggles with relationships, including with his caring but overwhelmed mother Julie (Sally Hawkins). Nathan has the more functional form of autism once known as Aspergers but he is also still struggling with the trauma of the accidental death of his father Michael (Martin McCann), who was killed in a car wreck while Nathan was in the car. His mother has done her best to raise him as a single parent but Nathan was never as close to her as his dad and it has been difficult for them both. British films hoping to succeed in the international market must overcome production and distribution roadblocks in an increasingly competitive industry.

That was the message from the ‘Selling UK Films Abroad’ panel discussion co-hosted by Screen International and the UK Trade & Investment (Ukti) agency, held at London House, about how British films are faring abroad.

“You can’t have a weak link in a package anymore,” said Metro Films International CEO Will Machin, who is selling Michael Caton-Jones’ Urban Hymn in Toronto.

Stephen Kelliher, director of Bankside Films, noted that the bar is higher than ever and stated: “The bullseye for what works theatrically, British or not, has gotten smaller and smaller over recent years. You have to be in the top five to ten percent of movies to have any chance of truly working.”

There’s something impossibly charming about Morgan Matthews’ “ A Brilliant Young Mind,” his debut as a fictional feature-length narrative director. Much like the film’s core message and encompassing theme, this charm doesn’t come with an equation that leads to an easy solution, which only amplifies our satisfaction that much more. Asa Butterfield has reportedly been chosen to play Spider-Man in the upcoming reboot. The actor was said to be the frontrunner not too long ago, after appearing on a shortlist, and according to El Mayimbe, he has now been officially chosen for the role.

Now, neither Marvel nor Sony have put out a press release confirming this just yet, but El Mayimbe is rarely, if ever, wrong, and considering that Butterfield was on the shortlist and said to be the frontrunner, there’s no real reason to doubt this report. However, until we get official confirmation, it’s not 100% set in stone.

The 16th annual California festival will present A Brilliant Young Mind, Set Fire To The Stars and A Little Chaos on Friday.

Morgan Matthews’ A Brilliant Young Mind stars Asa Butterfield as maths prodigy and also stars Sally Hawkins. The film premiered in Toronto last year.

Set Fire To The Stars features Elijah Wood as Dylan Thomas and is directed by Andy Goddard of Downton Abbey fame.

Alan Rickman’s period drama A Little Chaos (pictured) stars Matthias Schoenaerts and Kate Winslet as rival landscape gardeners commissioned by Louis Xiv to create a fountain at Versailles.

The films will be followed by the festival’s UK Celebration Gala.

The Newport Beach Film Festival UK Celebration is supported by BMW, Visit Newport Beach, Ted Baker London, Movado, Air New Zealand, Me Hotel London, British American Business Council – Orange County, BritWeek and Screen International.
