Fox Entertainment has unveiled plans for an upcoming drama series called “Billionaire Apocalypse.” The show will explore themes of wealth inequality and social responsibility. It was created by Jay Carson, known for his work on “The Morning Show.”
“Billionaire Apocalypse” will follow the richest man in the world after a financial crisis causes his wealth to disappear. With his money gone, he loses power and control over his employees and family. The series looks at how this affects the relationships of those who relied on his wealth.
Carson will write and produce the show. He has experience in both politics and entertainment. Previously, Carson worked as a spokesperson in the U.S. Senate and for President Bill Clinton. Later he produced “House of Cards” for Netflix and created “The Morning Show” for Apple TV+.
Hollywood star Hugh Jackman and veterans Lawrence Bender and Kevin Brown will also serve as executive producers.

Fox is developing a drama series about the richest man in the world having to flee his private island after a global financial collapse.
Billionaire Apocalypse (w/t) comes from The Morning Show creator Jay Carson, who will write, and exec producers including Hugh Jackman, Pulp Fiction producer Lawrence Bender and Kevin Brown, exec producer of Starz’ Flesh and Bone.

Fox Entertainment Studios is producing and it will be distributed internationally by Fox Entertainment Global.
The series follows the richest man on the planet, 200 of his employees, and his family as they are forced to flee to his private island in the wake of a global financial collapse, where the employees and family members — who he’s treated as afterthoughts for decades — quickly realize he’s no longer rich and thus no longer in charge.

Over the last decade, companies like Netflix, NBCUniversal and Cinelease have committed an enormous amount of capital to filming in New Mexico. That development, along with attractive tax rebates from the state, has enabled Santa Fe to blossom into an enviable production hub.
The combination of that growth and a forward-thinking creative community has also helped generate a unique, on-the-rise energy to the Santa Fe International Film Festival, which in 2024 earned a place on Moviemaker Magazine’s list of “50 Film Festivals Worth the Entry Fee” for the second year in a row.
Nestled in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, the festival offers up a rare mixture of natural beauty, professional networking opportunities for up-and-coming artists, and superbly curated programming. Returning for its 16th edition October 16-20, this year’s theme is identity and collective humanity — exploring what makes a person distinct while also binding them to one another.

I will admit that I’m not a regular listener to Rainn Wilson’s podcast. I also have no ill will toward the man, and do feel it’s unfair that he’s been so thoroughly pigeonholed as Dwight from The Office. I actually thought he was fantastic in Super, from James Gunn’s pre-Guardians days. However, a recent clip from his podcast, Soul Boom, perfectly encapsulates that awkward moment when you find that someone you felt was a kindred spirit may not, in fact, share the same experience with you that you think they do.
It’s a segment in which Wilson attempts to delve into Bryan Cranston’s thoughts about being stuck forever being known only as Walter White; I’d assume inspired by feeling a sense of connection to his personal prison of Dwighthood. Specifically, he prompts Cranston, “Tell me about your relationship with Walter White,...

Bleecker Street executives Kent Sanderson and Myles Bender can vividly remember their first time seeing “Eye in the Sky,” a drone warfare thriller starring Helen Mirren and Alan Rickman that premiered in 2015 at Toronto Film Festival with hopes of finding distribution. Not long into the Canadian screening, they were held rapt by film but quickly realized their contemporaries in the room didn’t feel the same way.
“Within 15 minutes, I started watching a lot of other buyers get up and leave. I guess they felt the film was too challenging,” says Sanderson, Bleecker Street’s president. He and Bender, head of marketing and creative advertising, pushed for their boss, the film company’s co-founder and CEO, Andrew Karpen, to watch the film so they could bid on the distribution rights. Bender recalls, “We were looking at each other and saying, ‘What are we seeing that they aren’t?’”

Bleecker Street celebrated its 10th anniversary on Saturday night following the New York Film Festival premiere of Mike Leigh’s “Hard Truths.” It was an emotional evening, one that honored Bleecker Street’s track record of producing acclaimed indies such as “Captain Fantastic” and “Trumbo,” as well as its endurance in a challenging business. Much of that credit goes to Andrew Karpen, Bleecker Street’s founder and the recipient of the Variety Vanguard Award.
“There are few people who love independent movies like Andrew Karpen, who spent the last 25 years championing independent movies,” said Ramin Setoodeh, Variety‘s co-editor-in-chief, who noted that in addition to launching Bleecker Street, Karpen served as co-ceo of Focus Features for more than a decade.
The evening was also a chance for Karpen’s friends and colleagues to recognize his personal courage. The Bleecker Street chief was diagnosed with glioblastoma in January. “We are in awe of Andrew,...

It's strange to think that quite a few networks turned down "Breaking Bad" before it became the gargantuan hit series it did. The show largely defined what is meant by the term "the golden age of TV," providing pre-streaming audiences with a slickly-made premium drama that represents exactly the kind of high-quality entertainment that's often lacking in today's oversaturated media landscape.
What's more, "Breaking Bad" launched or catapulted the careers of several of its actors, most notably Bryan Cranston, who played Walter White/Heisenberg — a chemistry teacher who goes on a meth-dealing odyssey to become a drug kingpin. Cranston has become nothing short of a megastar in the wake of his seminal series, but it wasn't just the former "Malcolm in the Middle" star that received a post-"Breaking Bad" boost. Many of the actors involved with the series have seen their careers take off since the show went off...

It’s not uncommon for a prominent British actor to be labeled British acting royalty. All types, from Laurence Olivier to Maggie Smith, have worn the label but nobody perhaps has literally worn that title recently to the extent as Helen Mirren. She has had a long varied career and has earned her place as one of the holders of acting’s triple crowns by playing a variety of British monarchs.
Her Oscar came for playing the British Queen Elizabeth II in “The Queen,” which dealt with her reaction to the unexpected death of Princess Diana. She would revisit the role nine years later for a Tony on Broadway in the play “The Audience,” which dealt with Elizabeth’s relationships with the various prime ministers who have served under her. It was a different Queen, Elizabeth I, that would bring Mirren one of her four Emmys, when she starred in...

When Andrew Karpen wants to convince a filmmaker to let him release their movie, he doesn’t blow them away by offering more and more money. For one thing, Bleecker Street, the indie studio he founded in 2014, doesn’t have the financial firepower of an Apple or a Netflix.
“Our pitch is always centered around the kind of experience that they will have with us, knowing that we will be collaborative and transparent,” Karpen says. “I always say, ‘This is not a campaign where you will just be emailed the final poster and trailer and given two tickets to the premiere.’”
And over nearly 70 films, that openness has kept Karpen and his small but mighty staff in the game. While Bleecker is celebrating its 10th anniversary, many of its competitors haven’t managed to survive in a business that’s only become more treacherous to navigate. Actor John Goodman, 71, known for Roseanne and The Big Lebowski, was spotted with a slimmed-down figure at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York. Goodman was with his wife, Anna Beth Goodman this weekend. Goodman has lost a remarkable 200 pounds over the last few years.
Goodman wore khaki pants and a dark green sweatshirt over a blue shirt, while his wife wore a white blouse with dark pants and white sneakers.
Since 2007, Goodman has been working on his health after quitting drinking. The actor worked with a fitness trainer to build an exercise routine and reshape his diet. It was said that Goodman took on a “Mediterranean-style eating plan,” incorporating fish, nuts, olive oil, vegetables and fruits.
Goodman’s exercise routine consisted of working out six days a week, aiming to take 10,000 to 12,000 steps daily with a treadmill or elliptical bicycle.
In 2016, Goodman talked to Howard Stern about his fitness journey.

Since the establishment of the Academy Awards in 1929, exactly 60 films have achieved lone lead male acting nominations, meaning they were each recognized in the Best Actor category and nowhere else. The last such instance occurred in 2023 and involved “Aftersun” star Paul Mescal, who, at 26, stood out as the youngest member of a lineup consisting only of first-time Oscar contenders. Although his low-budget movie had a strong shot at an original screenplay bid and was viewed as a serious Best Picture candidate, it ended up getting no love outside the acting branch.
Before Mescal was recognized, his category hadn’t seen a lone nominee since Willem Dafoe earned his first lead bid for “At Eternity’s Gate” in 2019. This was the ninth time that four or more years separated consecutive Best Actor loners, with the single largest gap having spread between Cary Grant and Clifton Webb. When the nominations for the 30th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards are announced in January, there appear to be four locks in the best ensemble category. “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Poor Things” currently lead the Gold Derby odds, with “The Color Purple” next in line. It’s quite possible that these five casts are the ones that will ultimately be chosen by the SAG Awards. However, there’s another film steadily hovering in sixth place. And it’s one that we should not ignore.
Here are five reasons why Amazon Studios’ “Air” might make its way into the guild’s best ensemble playoff.
1. It has the fab four making up its core.
Matt Damon. Ben Affleck. Jason Bateman. And, of course, Viola Davis. Those are huge names in the acting industry, and the fusion of the four may prove irresistible to the guild’s nominating committee.

Remembering The Comedians Of Comedy, Netflix's First True Original Production (A Quasi-Oral History)
If I asked you to name the first original production from Netflix, what would you say? An educated guess might bring you to "House of Cards" or "Lilyhammer," and that's a fair assessment. While the former was Netflix's first piece of original programming produced specifically for the company's streaming service (released in February of 2013), the latter technically has the honor of being Netflix's first original streaming production (premiering on Netflix in February of 2012), even though it was only partially funded by Netflix and actually premiered in Norway first under the TV network NRK1.
But what if I told you that neither of these was the first true Netflix original? What if I told you Netflix produced their first original production even before they created the now-defunct Red Envelope Entertainment? Yes, before streaming, Netflix had a film financing and acquisition arm that shuttered in 2008 after investing in more than 100 films and...

Actor Bryan Cranston has always demonstrated complete commitment to his onscreen roles like Breaking Bad and Your Honor. But Cranston’s dedication towards one of his roles resulted in him briefly dealing with real health issues.

Cranston found himself portraying blacklisted screenwriter Dalton Trumbo in the titular movie Trumbo. The film followed the controversies surrounding the writer, and how his political beliefs derailed his career and even cost him his freedom.
One of the requirements Cranston had to follow for the role was to smoke constantly. Cranston initially didn’t think this was a big deal because he’d be using fake cigarettes. Then he realized fake cigarettes also posed a bit of a health risk.

It's hard to believe Helen Mirren hasn't been nominated for an Oscar since The Last Station, way back in 2009. The shock comes not from her fate's unfairness, mind you. Instead, it stems from how Mirren seems to be actively chasing gold, nabbing essential precursor support for projects like Hitchcock, The Hundred-Foot Journey, Woman in Gold, Trumbo, and The Leisure Seeker. This year, the actress may be going down the same road with Golda, the recently released biopic about Golda Meier, "the Iron Lady of Israel.". To mark the occasion, let's look away from the failed Oscar buzz and consider the peak of Helen Mirren's work as a big-screen legend.
As with Angela Bassett, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sigourney Weaver, Marilyn Monroe, and Maggie Smith, TV performances will be set aside for another day, and so will her Academy-anointed turns. Caveats out of the way, this is my Mirren top ten…...

This week’s guest is Bryan Cranston. Perhaps best-known for his multiple Emmy-winning role of Walter White in AMC series Breaking Bad and his Oscar-nominated turn in the film Trumbo, Cranston has most recently played Judge Michael Desiato in Your Honor on Showtime.
In the second and final season of Your Honor, the Judge is reeling with grief from the murder of his son, and is galvanized to take on the mob family that caused his own life to implode.
In this episode of the podcast, Cranston talks about “the pursuit of happiness”, “the emotional treasure chest” he draws on to play his roles, and why he’s interested in playing men with complex problems who are “not complete people”.
He also mentions how a visit to his uncle who lives on a nudist colony makes him “really grateful most people wear clothes in this world” and how he might...

This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
Since iconic TV drama Breaking Bad first premiered in 2008, its actors have gone on to populate all corners of the entertainment landscape. Bryan Cranston can now be seen in modern prestige dramas like Showtime’s Your Honor and Oscar-nominated fare like Trumbo. Aaron Paul made time for a major role in HBO’s sci-fi epic Westworld and can currently be seen all over television in commercials asking you to bet on sports.
No one better understands the impact that a Breaking Bad acting alum can make on a TV program, however, than Star Wars fans. That’s because Giancarlo Esposito, who played the horrifying villain Gus Fring on Breaking Bad and spinoff Better Call Saul, has played the almost equally horrifying villain Moff Gideon on The Mandalorian since the show’s very first season.

The grants are part of Nywift’s scholarship fund and will assist with educational costs associated with film production, living expenses, books, travel and tuition needs. Bleecker Street’s contribution will be officially acknowledged at Nywift’s upcoming Muse Awards on March 28, which recently announced a mix of film executives, actors and filmmakers — including Arianna Bocco, Danielle Brooks, Deborah Chow, Maria Hinojosa, Sandra Lee, Freida Pinto, Lauren Ridloff, Sharon Stone, and Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences president Janet Yang — as this year’s honorees.

SAG Awards nominee profile: Taron Egerton (‘Black Bird’) would be third youngest male TV winner ever
Just last year, Michael Keaton’s Screen Actors Guild Award victory for “Dopesick” made him the fifth man to win the organization’s Best TV Movie/Miniseries Actor prize after losing on his first lead film bid (for 2014’s “Birdman”). Now, since Taron Egerton has earned guild recognition for Apple TV+’s “Black Bird” after coming up short on his nomination for the 2019 film “Rocketman,” the group is already on the verge of gaining its sixth member. If he triumphs on this outing, the 33-year-old will also follow comedy champ Sean Hayes and limited series victor Darren Criss as the third youngest man to ever win an individual SAG Award for TV acting.
The four actors who preceded Keaton in eventually spinning their initial lead film losses into TV movie or miniseries wins were Paul Newman, Kevin Kline, Paul Giamatti and Bryan Cranston. Keaton and Giamatti stand apart from the...

Bryan Cranston is showing me his Breaking Bad tattoo. Asking an actor about their most famous role can be risky – especially if that role is a decade old, and in that decade they’ve gone on to earn Tony awards, Oscar nods, and do any number of interesting things. Cranston is happy to oblige, though. Thrilled even. “Here it is!” He splays out his fingers so they straddle the camera. On the inside of his ring finger is the tattoo he got on his last day filming the 16-time Emmy-winning series that changed his life. The ink is faded now and the letters bleed into one another, but the symbols are instantly recognisable: Br. Ba.
“This will be 10 years old in another month,” sighs Cranston. He hikes up his eyebrows as if to say, Can you believe it? Cranston is that rare ageless actor, seemingly born into middle age and never growing a day older.

Nearly 30 years after she was part of the inaugural class of Screen Actors Guild Awards nominees with her supporting bid for 1994’s “True Lies,” Jamie Lee Curtis, who lost back then to Dianne Wiest (“Bullets Over Broadway”), finally has not one but two more shots at being honored by the acting guild. Her individual and ensemble notices for “Everything Everywhere All at Once” come nearly five decades into her prolific career and could lead to a record-breaking dual achievement. If the 64-year-old succeeds on both bids, she will be the oldest performer to win two SAG Awards for a single film.
Of the four women challenging Curtis in the supporting category, only Hong Chau (“The Whale”) has vied for the same prize before. She was part of the 2017 lineup for “Downsizing” but lost that race to Allison Janney. Also in the running are general first-timer Kerry Condon (“The Banshees of Inisherin...

The death of actress-activist Marsha Hunt this week is a historical watershed and a personal loss. Marsha was one of the last living actors who began her movie career during the Great Depression in 1935. She became part of a now vanished Hollywood, initially at Paramount then at MGM, that bound contracted talent to studios with artists having little to no say over their choice of roles and careers. Nevertheless, she thrived in the studio system by becoming somewhat less than a genuine movie star and more of a consummate professional actress.
Marsha’s career was derailed by the Blacklist, a perfidious period of American history that has been endlessly chronicled and misunderstood. Never a Communist or radical, she was a forthright liberal who refused to accept her voice being marginalized by the endemic sexism and politics of the period. Marsha was the final survivor of the Committee of the First Amendment,...

Chicago – The binge world is abuzz with the anticipation of what actor Bryan Cranston will bring in reprising his Walter White character (‘Breaking Bad), in the prequel/sequel series ‘Better Call Saul.’ In the meantime, he has a branded tequila to promote, and photographer Joe Arce got the Exclusive Portrait.
As Joe Arce wrote, “They started lining up at midnight, some even coming from neighboring states” at Sal’s Beverage World in Villa Park, Illinois, welcoming the ‘Bad’-ass star Cranston, as he appeared on behalf of his brand liquor partnership with fellow Bb cohort Aaron Paul, “Dos Hombres” Mezcal Artesian Tequila. Harrison Ford and Helen Mirren are set to star in Taylor Sheridan’s new “Yellowstone” prequel “1932” at Paramount+, Variety has learned.
The show follows the Dutton family in the titular year, a time of Prohibition, the Great Depression, and westward expansion. “1932” is a followup to “1883,” the latter of which told the story of the Dutton family as they made their way to Montana to found what would become the Yellowstone Ranch in the mothership series. “1932” was ordered to series at Paramount+ back in February. Scrolling through Michael Stuhlbarg’s filmography on Wikipedia, you’ll notice that quite a few of his roles are written in blue font, with hyperlinks that lead to other Wikipedia pages. The real-life characters he’s taken on include former New York Times executive editor Abe Rosenthal in “The Post,” Golden Age-actor Edward G. The Breaking Bad and Trumbo star will voice the cinematic journey through one of America’s first National Parks.

But when I first saw Yosemite … my mind was blown. I was awestruck by its natural beauty and felt that everyone in the world should experience it. This experience is the next best thing … it majestically captures Yosemite from discovery to sustaining its natural wonder.”
Produced by CityLights, Experience Yosemite ushers in a new multisensory cinematic experience, communicating the ancient art of storytelling through a deeper, more powerful medium, intimately connecting viewers with this awe-inspiring place.

Rio Hackford, prominent club owner, actor and son of Oscar-winning filmmaker Taylor Hackford, has died. He was 51.
Friend of Hackford and screenwriter D.V. DeVincentis confirmed his death in an Instagram post on Friday, and Hackford’s stepmother Helen Mirren also posted an image tribute on Saturday.
“Rio was more attuned to experience than anyone I’ve ever known. He would stop what was happening to point it out, compel you to pay attention,” Divincentis wrote. “He would order you a must-have experience from a beloved menu and hold your eye as you paid attention to what was happening in your mouth.”
“Not simply obsessed with movies and how they mirrored and compelled, he was something more: a superfan of enumerable scenes, of particular gestures of unsung actors, weird career turns, roaring comebacks, cinema swan songs — all real experiences for you, when beheld consciously,” Divincentis continued.
His brother Alex Hackford told Variety that Hackford died Thursday,...

Last year, Nicholas Hoult became a double Screen Actors Guild Award nominee when he was recognized as part of the cast of “The Great” as well as for his individual performance on the show. Now, he and his costars are back in the running for the comedy ensemble prize, but leading lady Elle Fanning is the one who has been singled out. Her portrayal of 18th century Russian empress Catherine the Great constitutes the first regular TV role on her two-decade-long acting resume. If she succeeds on this outing, she will be the first performer to win a solo SAG Award for playing a real person on a comedy series.

It is a safe assumption that anyone with even a casual awareness of popular culture knows an Alan Tudyk performance.
For science fiction fans, Tudyk may be Wash from Firefly, or K-2So from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. For fans of comic-book-based shows, he’s Joker and Clayface on Harley Quinn, or Mr. Nobody on Doom Patrol. Disney fans have their pick of comedic villains, and animal sidekicks. From comedies to drama to dramedy, Tudyk has one of the most recognizable and interesting careers in showbusiness.
But it is in his current role, on Syfy’s sci-fi comedy series Resident Alien, that Tudyk is receiving newfound recognition. Premiering its second season Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 9 p.m. Et, the show revolves around Tudyk’s extraterrestrial character who crash lands on our planet while trying to exterminate humanity. Adapted by Chris Sheridan from the Dark Horse comic of the same name,...

The acting branch of the academy decide the rosters in the four performance categories. Not surprisingly, the Screen Actors’ Guild (SAG) Awards have a stellar record at foreshadowing these nominations. This year’s Best Supporting Actress race at both the Oscars and SAG has a rock solid top 4 right now: Ariana DeBose (“West Side Story”), Kirsten Dunst (“The Power of The Dog”), Aunjanue Ellis (“King Richard”) and Caitriona Balfe (“Belfast”). That last slot is still very much wide open. Here are the six actresses in top contention for that spot at this year’s SAG Awards.
Marlee Matlin (“Coda”)
SAG voters are bound to be won over by “Coda.” It is the definitive crowdpleaser of this year’s field. “Coda” warms the heart, inspires the outcast within us and almost certainly requires a box of tissues close-by. It may well follow in the footsteps of another Sundance hit and 2006 SAG...

Just one month after debuting its sophomore season to rave reviews, Hulu’s “The Great” has shared with Gold Derby the names of the 12 cast members who are eligible for the ensemble prize at the 2022 Screen Actors Guild Awards. Last year’s SAG nominated star Nicholas Hoult returns for the second season as Russian Emperor Peter, who begins this second installment in the midst of a coup attempt by his wife, Empress Catherine (Elle Fanning). See the alphabetical list below.
“The Great” is looking for its second consecutive nomination for comedy ensemble at the SAG Awards after earning a bid at the last ceremony for its freshman season. Star Hoult is also looking to score back-to-back bids in the Comedy Actor category. Gold Derby expects the series will not only match its previous nominations haul, but add a third citation for Fanning. According to our current combined odds, “The Great” is in fourth in ensemble,...

If it feels like we were just writing about the 2021 Screen Actors Guild Awards, well, that’s probably because they got pushed to later in 2021 than usual due to the Covid-19 pandemic. That ceremony, the 27th of its kind, took place on April 4. That shift of the awards calendar is resulting in some changes to this year’s races as well.
The eligibility period for both films and television series, and their respective performers, this year is condensed — from March 1 to Dec. 31. Submissions for all categories were due Nov. 5, with balloting opening Dec. 6 and continuing through 5 p.m. Pt on Jan. 9. The 28th annual SAG Awards nominations will be announced Jan. 12 with final voting opening Jan. 19 and continuing through noon Pt on Feb. 25. The winners will be announced at the live ceremony on Feb. 27.
Ahead of all that, Variety highlights important ballot areas to keep your eye on when voting.
