Exclusive: Stars Collective and Thailand’s Film Odyssey Co. Ltd will finance and produce an untitled Muay Thai action film trilogy (currently referred to as Muay Thai Trilogy) which will feature Thai martial arts star Tony Jaa. Jaa has appeared in Furious 7 (playing the role of Kiet), Master Z: The Ip Man Legacy and Triple Threat.

Stars Collective will finance and produce the trilogy as a China-Thailand co-production, with the films shooting in Thailand and China.

Yuthlert Sippapak (Friday Killer) will direct all three of the “Muay Thai Trilogy” movies. Sippapak is the founder of production outfit Film Odyssey and will produce the movies alongside Stars Collective founder Peter Luo and co-ceo Nancy Xu. Luo was the producer of Malignant and Scary Stories to Tell in The Dark, among others. Jaa is also attached as an executive producer.

The cast is shaping up for Paramount’s untitled horror movie from The Autopsy of Jane Doe director André Øvredal.

Deadline reports that Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys for Life), and Lou Llobell (“Foundation”) have boarded the project.

The screenplay is written by Zachary Donohue (The Den) and T.W. Burgess (Mister Howl), but plot details are being kept under wraps.

Former Warner Bros production executive Walter Hamada, who steered the Conjuring and It franchises, is producing via his 18hz as part of his first-look deal with Paramount. It screenwriter Gary Dauberman is also producing via Coin Operated.

Øvredal earned intentional attention with his Norwegian found footage mockumentary Trollhunter before making his English-language debut with The Autopsy of Jane Doe. He has since helmed the likes of Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

Exclusive: Oscar winner Melissa Leo, Jacob Scipio and Lou Llobell are boarding André Øvredal’s untitled horror movie for Paramount and Walter Hamada’s 18hz.

Former Warner Bros production executive Hamada is producing the pic via his production company as part of his first-look deal with Paramount, alongside It screenwriter Gary Dauberman via Coin Operated. The screenplay is written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess; the plot, of course, is under wraps. Nathan Samdahl of 18hz will executive produce. Hamada is also producing Primate, which is in post-production, at Paramount.

Leo won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress in 2011 for Paramount’s David O. Russell-directed The Fighter. She’s starred in such movies as Frozen River, on which she received an Oscar nom for Best Actress, and Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners, The Equalizer franchise, Oliver Stone’s Snowden and the HBO series I Know This Much Is True. She is repped by Gersh.

While we wait for Orphan 3, which was officially announced last November, franchise star Isabelle Fuhrman has set up her next project. Fuhrman will star in the thriller Die by Night.

Variety details this afternoon that Ben Hardy and Scoot McNairy will also star in the dystopian movie.

The outlet also reports, “The feature is being launched by Protagonist Pictures ahead of the upcoming EFM in Berlin. Protagonist is handling international sales while UTA Independent Film Group is representing North American rights.”

Die by Night is set over the course of one night in a world where “the only way to survive to see a new day is to trust each other and stay in the light until you make it to The Wall.”

Creatures known as The Horde hunt down surviving humans in the dark in the film’s post-apocalyptic world, where long stretches of darkness plunge the world into chaos.

Since his directorial debut over two decades ago, André Øvredal has steadily built an impressive filmography, mostly working within the horror genre. After his first feature film, Future Murder, in 2000, the Norwegian filmmaker built a name for himself over a decade later, eventually directing popular films like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, with the latter hoping to find a place among the best Dracula movies of all time.

Despite working his way up to Hollywood productions, Øvredal is not yet a household name, but the signs of him becoming one are there, especially with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 in the works. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is by far his most famous film, earning over $104 million worldwide when it was released in 2019 (via Box Office Mojo), and the sequel has the potential to earn even more.

Ten years ago, writer/director Jason Krawczyk brought the world the horror comedy He Never Died, which introduced viewers to a badass immortal character named Jack (played by Henry Rollins), who had been around for thousands of years. The follow-ups planned for that film haven’t made it into production, but now, Krawczyk is back with the action comedy Don’t Mess with Grandma (which was filmed under the title Sunset Superman), starring Michael Jai White. I had the chance to watch the movie several months ago and had a lot of fun with it (you can read my 8/10 review at This Link), and a larger audience will have the opportunity to enjoy it when it reaches the free streaming service Tubi on January 24th!

Exclusive: Peter Luo’s Stars Collective has teamed with the LA-based tech agency HashMatrix to build a slate of AI-generated projects alongside a new AI film festival set to launch in 2025.

Under the terms of the partnership, Stars Collective and HashMatrix will use artificial intelligence to develop and produce twelve short-form dramas based on Stars Collective’s existing intellectual property.

The AI Film Festival will take place in Los Angeles. Organizers told us the event will “showcase groundbreaking AI applications in film, and foster collaboration between the two industries.”

Stars Collective will oversee the festival and handle brand licensing alongside outreach to the film industry with a specific interest in Hollywood. HashMatrix has said it will engage AI companies, secure collaborations, and contribute resources from the AI industry.

Exclusive: After creating and writing the first many seasons of the long-running animated series Ninjago for The Lego Group, brothers Kevin and Dan Hageman have been enlisted to script a new live-action film in the Lego Ninjago franchise for Universal Pictures.

News of the new Ninjago comes following word that Jake Kasdan, Patty Jenkins and Joe Cornish are on board to direct live-action Lego movies for Universal. Details as to the plot of the Hagemans’ film are under wraps.

Nightmare Soup, the children’s horror anthology novel series written by Jake Tri and illustrated by Andy Sciazko that’s currently being adapted into the Bloody FM podcast of the same name, is releasing the ultimate feast – a deluxe hardcover collection.

In a sense, Netflix really is the new Blockbuster Video (or Hollywood Video or whatever rental chain my fellow old people preferred to frequent). Once you marched past the rows stacked with endless copies of the latest release at your local Blockbuster, you could uncover films and TV shows that either flew under the radar or were deemed too scandalous for mainstream tastes. (Stumbling upon and being mildly traumatized by the grotesque cover artwork for horror B-movies was practically a rite of passage for folks of a certain age.) You don't get anywhere near the same range of choices on Netflix -- especially now that its library is increasingly composed of the service's originals -- but it does similarly allow certain older, somewhat forgotten titles to gain a new lease on life, however fleeting it may be.

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Recently, there have been casting announcements for a movie called Primate, which is being directed by genre regular Johannes Roberts and is part of Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount. Now, Deadline has broken the news that another Hamada horror project that’s moving forward at Paramount has gotten another genre regular, Andre Ovredal, to sign on as director.

Ovredal will be directing this other film from a screenplay written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess. Donohue previously directed and co-wrote the 2013 found footage horror film The Den and wrote and directed the TV series The Unknowable.

Director André Øvredal has set up his next horror project, with Deadline reporting that Øvredal has signed on to direct an untitled horror movie for Walter Hamada’s 18hz Productions.

Deadline details in this week’s exclusive report, “Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess penned the script for the new project, which has a logline that’s being kept secret.”

Gary Dauberman (Salem’s Lot) will also produce the untitled horror movie.

Via 18hz Productions, Hamada is slated to produce several mid-budget horror films for Paramount Pictures per year. Other projects in the works include Primate and Familiar.

Hamada, who recently left WB/DC, has a ton of horror cred from his time at New Line, producing countless horror movies including the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street remakes as well as The Conjuring and its various spinoffs and the 2017 adaptation of It.

From Jason Lee to Justin Long to Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith has brought back a bunch of his regular collaborators to appear in the cast of his latest film, The 4:30 Movie. Shot in Smiths own movie theater, Smodcastle Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands, The 4:30 Movie is his most personal film in years. Its a coming-of-age comedy about a group of teenagers theater-hopping across a single day in the 1980s.

Like Wes Anderson and Martin Scorsese, Smith is known for working with the same actors over and over again. Part of that is because most of his films take place in an interconnected universe, the View Askewniverse, so a lot of actors play the same characters across different movies. Today, Smith took to social media to unveil a poster for the film, which can be seen at the bottom of this article, while also confirming that he’ll be showing the trailer to fans who attend his Hall H panel at the San Diego Comic-Con this Saturday. The trailer with then drop online next Monday morning, which is also when tickets to the world premiere event will be available for purchase.

I hope you’re thirsty because Saturday Night Live cast member Alex Moffat and Nancy Drew‘s Kennedy McMann are serving some fresh-brewed laughs with the upcoming indie comedy Brewmance. Keagan Karnes makes his directorial debut for the project from a screenplay by Mary Haarmeyer and Stafford Douglas.

According to Deadline, Brewmance “follows Amber, a headstrong brewery owner and Samuel, a slick marketing strategist, who clash over how to save her failing business. But as they stir up a plan to reinvent the brewery, they unexpectedly ferment their own love story.”

Other cast members coming to clink glasses with Moffat and McMann include Steven Ogg, Zoe Colletti, Jamey Maurice Clay (Santa’s Cousin), Caroline Kingsley (The Violet Hour), Kirk Roos (Santa’s Cousin), and Joel de la Fuenta (Man in the High Castle). Hallmark Media has announced the details for a new, original movie, My Dreams of You, starring Skyler Samuels and Kapil Talwalker.

The movie is set to premiere on August 10 on Hallmark Channel as part of the feel-good network’s Summer Nights Movie Stunt. Read on to find out more about the movie and see beautiful photos taken on the film set.

According to the official synopsis, My Dreams of You tells the story of a woman who dreams about a man she has never met. Meanwhile, this is due to a clerical error in Dream Central. As time runs out, Grace McMahon (Skyler Samuels) tries to find him before any memories of each other are erased.

Jaws deleted scene showed a child being eaten, but was removed for being too graphic and shocking. Spielberg's decision not to include the scene may have been for the right reasons, as it kept the shark's full appearance hidden until later in the film. There were several gateway horror shows and movies that made genre fans out of an entire generation, preparing kids for the horrors of the real world within the safe confines of a television set. But the MPA saw it differently. When they had the chance to watch the movie earlier this year, they felt the sexual references in the dialogue were enough for the movie to earn an R rating for sexual content. Smith appealed the rating (and subscribers to That Kevin Smith Club got some interesting insight into the appeals process), but the ratings board decided to stick with the R. They confirmed today that The 4:30 Movie will remain an R rated film.

Smith has a history of being able to get his films re-rated on appeal. Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno were both given Nc-17 ratings, but were re-rated R on appeal.
