Stars: Corey Hawkins, Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, Chris Walley, Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, Martin Furulund, Nikolai Nikolaeff, Javier Botet | Written by Bragi F. Schut, Zak Olkewicz | Directed by André Øvredal
The Last Voyage of the Demeter is a chilling horror film that delivers a uniquely atmospheric take on the classic Dracula mythos. Directed by André Øvredal, the movie adapts a single chapter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula—the doomed voyage of the Demeter, a Russian schooner transporting a mysterious cargo from Carpathia to England. This narrative decision to focus on a small portion of the novel allows the film to dive deep into the slow-building dread and claustrophobia of being trapped at sea with an unspeakable horror.
The film begins with the Demeter’s crew discovering that they have been tasked with transporting a set of crates, each filled with soil from Transylvania. They are unaware that...

Over the last 15 years, director André Øvredal has brought us the likes of Troll Hunter, The Autopsy of Jane Doe, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, Mortal, and The Last Voyage of the Demeter. He missed out on the Stephen King / Richard Bachman adaptation The Long Walk and has said that not making that movie is one of the big regrets of his life… but he’s not letting that missed opportunity slow him down. Deadline reports that Øvredal is teaming up with Paramount and Walter Hamada’s 18hz on a new horror project – and while we don’t know the title yet, we do know that the the film’s cast includes Oscar winner Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Jacob Scipio (Bad Boys: Ride or Die), and Lou Llobell (Foundation)!

While we wait for Orphan 3, which was officially announced last November, franchise star Isabelle Fuhrman has set up her next project. Fuhrman will star in the thriller Die by Night.
Variety details this afternoon that Ben Hardy and Scoot McNairy will also star in the dystopian movie.
The outlet also reports, “The feature is being launched by Protagonist Pictures ahead of the upcoming EFM in Berlin. Protagonist is handling international sales while UTA Independent Film Group is representing North American rights.”
Die by Night is set over the course of one night in a world where “the only way to survive to see a new day is to trust each other and stay in the light until you make it to The Wall.”
Creatures known as The Horde hunt down surviving humans in the dark in the film’s post-apocalyptic world, where long stretches of darkness plunge the world into chaos.

Since his directorial debut over two decades ago, André Øvredal has steadily built an impressive filmography, mostly working within the horror genre. After his first feature film, Future Murder, in 2000, the Norwegian filmmaker built a name for himself over a decade later, eventually directing popular films like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Last Voyage of the Demeter, with the latter hoping to find a place among the best Dracula movies of all time.
Despite working his way up to Hollywood productions, Øvredal is not yet a household name, but the signs of him becoming one are there, especially with Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 in the works. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is by far his most famous film, earning over $104 million worldwide when it was released in 2019 (via Box Office Mojo), and the sequel has the potential to earn even more.

Ten years ago, writer/director Jason Krawczyk brought the world the horror comedy He Never Died, which introduced viewers to a badass immortal character named Jack (played by Henry Rollins), who had been around for thousands of years. The follow-ups planned for that film haven’t made it into production, but now, Krawczyk is back with the action comedy Don’t Mess with Grandma (which was filmed under the title Sunset Superman), starring Michael Jai White. I had the chance to watch the movie several months ago and had a lot of fun with it (you can read my 8/10 review at This Link), and a larger audience will have the opportunity to enjoy it when it reaches the free streaming service Tubi on January 24th!

Undoubtedly, the '90s were the peak era of YA horror books, with scary kid lit for children and teens flooding the market and terrorizing '90s kids forever. Many of the best-loved classic kids' books of the '90s were coming-of-age tales, but plenty of others were pulpy thrillers and horror stories that dove into the dark side of human nature and the supernatural. The 1980s through 1990s saw a glut of horror books aimed at teen readers, but scary books for kids also exploded in popularity, driving a horror boom in books that had previously been reserved for adults.
Unlike today, most material aimed at children didn't pull punches out of fear of traumatizing children, and that included books. Much has been made of '80s kids' movies being incredibly dark, but while the new PG-13 rating put an end to it in that same decade, books continued to deliver horror,...

Teens are one of the most integral aspects of the horror genre's audience and there's certainly no shortage of the best scary movies for teens. The horror genre branches out into many different sub-genres, with one of the most popular being teen horror. Teen horror movies tend to feature young protagonists in the fight for their lives against a menacing serial killer, monster, ghost, or any other typical horror-movie fiend. Many are targeted specifically to a teen audience while still having universal appeal.
Adults are usually equipped to deal with pressures in life. Teens are not, and when their regular school and social lives are upended by a slasher killer or zombie outbreak, they are the last people anyone would expect to handle it. Nightmare Soup, the children’s horror anthology novel series written by Jake Tri and illustrated by Andy Sciazko that’s currently being adapted into the Bloody FM podcast of the same name, is releasing the ultimate feast – a deluxe hardcover collection.
“As quintessential ’90s kids, Andy and I loved books like Goosebumps, Bruce Coville’s Book of Nightmares, and especially Scary Stories To Tell In The Dark. And since it had been 25 years (at the time) since a new Scary Stories book had come out, we figured we’d try and do it ourselves,” Tri and Sciazko say on their Kickstarter for the new collection.
The first novel, Nightmare Soup: Tales That Will Turn Your Stomach, released in 2016 with 30 short stories and 30 illustrations, followed by Nightmare Soup II: The Second Helping in 2017, and Nightmare Soup III: Midnight Snack in 2022. In a sense, Netflix really is the new Blockbuster Video (or Hollywood Video or whatever rental chain my fellow old people preferred to frequent). Once you marched past the rows stacked with endless copies of the latest release at your local Blockbuster, you could uncover films and TV shows that either flew under the radar or were deemed too scandalous for mainstream tastes. (Stumbling upon and being mildly traumatized by the grotesque cover artwork for horror B-movies was practically a rite of passage for folks of a certain age.) You don't get anywhere near the same range of choices on Netflix -- especially now that its library is increasingly composed of the service's originals -- but it does similarly allow certain older, somewhat forgotten titles to gain a new lease on life, however fleeting it may be.
Admittedly, it's easier to understand why certain movies or series abruptly crack Netflix's...

At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Recently, there have been casting announcements for a movie called Primate, which is being directed by genre regular Johannes Roberts and is part of Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount. Now, Deadline has broken the news that another Hamada horror project that’s moving forward at Paramount has gotten another genre regular, Andre Ovredal, to sign on as director.
Ovredal will be directing this other film from a screenplay written by Zachary Donohue and T.W. Burgess. Donohue previously directed and co-wrote the 2013 found footage horror film The Den and wrote and directed the TV series The Unknowable.

Dracula-adjacent horror The Last Voyage Of The Demeter is only just getting a cinema screening in the UK, over a year after it screened into in the US. A look at its mysterious absence from our screens:
Update: Two months after we published this feature about The Last Voyage Of The Demeter never making it to UK screens, the film is now available to watch at home! It appears that you can currently only buy the film on digital retailers, but a rent option often appears after a few weeks.
Coincidentally, Salem’s Lot is also being released in cinemas this week, so if you like vampire films, you’re having a great week, I bet.

From Jason Lee to Justin Long to Jason Mewes, Kevin Smith has brought back a bunch of his regular collaborators to appear in the cast of his latest film, The 4:30 Movie. Shot in Smiths own movie theater, Smodcastle Cinemas in Atlantic Highlands, The 4:30 Movie is his most personal film in years. Its a coming-of-age comedy about a group of teenagers theater-hopping across a single day in the 1980s.
Like Wes Anderson and Martin Scorsese, Smith is known for working with the same actors over and over again. Part of that is because most of his films take place in an interconnected universe, the View Askewniverse, so a lot of actors play the same characters across different movies. But even his non-Askewniverse films, like The 4:30 Movie, have brought in frequent collaborators like Kate Micucci and Diedrich Bader.

There are some minor Spoilers ahead if you don’t want anything about writer/director Kevin Smith’s new film The 4:30 Movie given away before you see it… but for those of you who would like to weigh whether not these are the sort of spoilers you feel you should avoid, I will say that this only concerns one exchange of dialogue and some of the special thanks seen in the end credits. Now, to get to the point: The 4:30 Movie is in theatres as of today, and since its release date also happens to be a Friday the 13th, I thought it was worth pointing out and celebrating the fact that Jason Voorhees, the iconic star of the Friday the 13th franchise, gets a shout-out in the movie!

Plot: Writer-director Kevin Smith presents his most personal film to date with this coming-of-age story — set in the summer of 1986 — that follows three sixteen-year-old friends who spend their Saturdays sneaking into movies at the local cineplex. When one of the guys invites the girl of his dreams to see an R-rated film, all hilarity breaks loose, as a self-important theater manager and teen rivalries interfere with his best-laid plans.
Review: I have been a Kevin Smith fan since I saw Clerks in the mid-90s. Smith had a solid run over the early course of his career, but the 2010s were less kind from a critical standpoint. While I have stood by his projects even when the quality was less than I knew he was capable of, my gut told me that Kevin Smith had another great project in him.

Classic millennial books' appeal lies in resonant themes like independence, horror, and existential debates. Standout literature like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and Roald Dahl's books shaped millennial literature. The Harry Potter series and The Secret History were cultural milestones for millennials in terms of changing the course of literature.
A handful of standalone books and book series defined the childhoods of millennials due to their timely themes or popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. These classic kids' books from the 90s are still worth reading for their literary merit as well as nostalgia for the time. Others were released earlier, but are still important to this generation as they are still required reading material and demonstrate some resonant themes.

Jaws deleted scene showed a child being eaten, but was removed for being too graphic and shocking. Spielberg's decision not to include the scene may have been for the right reasons, as it kept the shark's full appearance hidden until later in the film. Other films, like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and The Fly, also had scenes removed for being too dark or disturbing.
A dramatic turn in Jaws sees the shark eat a little boy named Alex Kintner, but in the original version of the scene, the child was devoured onscreen. 1975's Jaws should need no introduction at this point, as it launched the career of now legendary director Steven Spielberg and is rightly considered a classic. One of the reasons Jaws succeeds is it's both a frightening horror film and a high-seas adventure story, as police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), marine biologist Matt Hooper...

More than four years have gone by since it was announced that director André Øvredal and producer Guillermo del Toro were re-teaming for a sequel to their cinematic adaptation of Alvin Schwartz’s Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark series of books. Last year, Øvredal confirmed that Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark 2 was still in the works and a script has been written, the project had just been slowed down by the pandemic, the making of his Dracula movie The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and the Hollywood strikes. We heard in December that writers/producers Dan Hageman and Kevin Hageman were fighting to get the sequel made… but now they have given a disappointing update to the folks at Collider: the sequel has stalled.

The '90s were a great time to be a young horror-loving kid. There were several gateway horror shows and movies that made genre fans out of an entire generation, preparing kids for the horrors of the real world within the safe confines of a television set. It was a time of "Goosebumps" and of "Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark," a time of "Aaahh!!! Real Monsters" and "Tales from the Cryptkeeper." Then there was "Courage the Cowardly Dog."
Though "Real Monsters" featured, well, monsters, it was still definitely a comedic show. "Courage the Cowardly Dog," though, even when it wasn't technically scary, it was always eerie and disturbing. The cartoon follows the eponymous dog Courage, who lives with an elderly couple in a farm in the middle of Nowhere, Kansas. They are constantly thrown into weird, often spooky situations. The series started with a pilot short titled "The Chicken from Outer Space,...

The 4:30 Movie is the sixteenth feature film from director Kevin Smith – and while he was making the movie, he thought he was making something that would get a PG-13 rating from the Motion Picture Association ratings board. But the MPA saw it differently. When they had the chance to watch the movie earlier this year, they felt the sexual references in the dialogue were enough for the movie to earn an R rating for sexual content. Smith appealed the rating (and subscribers to That Kevin Smith Club got some interesting insight into the appeals process), but the ratings board decided to stick with the R. They confirmed today that The 4:30 Movie will remain an R rated film.
Smith has a history of being able to get his films re-rated on appeal. Clerks and Zack and Miri Make a Porno were both given Nc-17 ratings, but were re-rated R on appeal.

Horror has been one of the most reliable genres at the box office since the pandemic began. Even movies like "The Wretched" helped keep the industry's pulse going while most theaters were shut down in 2020. Unfortunately, 2024 has, up to this point, not produced a major break-out hit yet, with only indie success stories like "Immaculate" and "Late Night with the Devil" to celebrate. We've yet to have a "Smile" ($22.6 million domestic opening/$217 million global finish) or a "M3GAN" ($30.4 million domestic opening/$180 million worldwide). Lionsgate, however, hopes to change that with the release of "The Strangers: Chapter 1."
Directed by Renny Harlin, this is the first entry in a new trilogy of films that will reboot the franchise started by director Bryan Bertino in 2008 with his home invasion classic "The Strangers." As the title implies, "Chapter 1" is just the first entry in the trilogy, which has already been completely filmed.

A Pisces, a Taurus, a Capricorn, a Leo, a Virgo, and an Aquarius walk into a rented mansion for their Libra friend’s birthday party. The Autopsy of Jane Doe director André Øvredal's first American movie premiered to critical acclaim, paving the way for future successes. Actress Olwen Kelly's performance brought realism to the role of Jane Doe, portraying the corpse through yoga knowledge and skillful stillness. The film's chronological shoot order, real coroner interactions, and Black List script accolades contributed to its authentic and chilling impact.
The Autopsy Of Jane Doe is the first American-made movie by Norwegian filmmaker André Øvredal, following his breakout with the found-footage horror movie Trollhunter. The Autopsy Of Jane Doe tells the story of two coroners, a father and son (Brian Cox & Emile Hirsch), called in to examine the body of an unidentified woman (called Jane Doe) to determine the cause of death as well as her history. Some fears, like monsters under the bed, are universal and never fully conquered. The best horror movies tap into relatable anxieties. Horror movies featuring monsters under the bed effectively exploit the fear of the unknown lurking just beneath the sheets at night. The best horror movies of all time encompass a variety of styles, settings, and fears that tap into specific anxieties and manage to be broadly relatable while still honing in on one particular fear. That's why shark movies are so popular, hitchhiker horror has so many variations, and not going into the attic is always a good idea.
