Exclusive: Following Lionsgate’s acquisition of eOne, Lionsgate Television has moved in to retain the top TV creator on eOne’s roster, Alexi Hawley, signing a premium overall deal with the creator/executive producer of two of eOne’s three ongoing premium scripted series, The Rookie on ABC, starring Nathan Fillion, and The Recruit on Netflix, headlined by Noah Centineo, as well as a hot new drama Lionsgate has out in the marketplace, The Envoy.

Hawley had emerged as the most prolific creator at eOne where he had two back-to-back overall deals, the most recent of which, signed in 2022, carried over to Lionsgate after the merger. In addition to The Rookie, which is headed to its seventh season, and The Recruit, going into Season 2, he also was behind spinoff The Rookie: Feds, which aired on ABC for one season, a run that was cut short at least in part by the strikes.

“Daredevil: Born Again” has found its new creative team.

Dario Scardapane, who wrote and executive produced on Netflix’s Marvel series “The Punisher,” will serve as the showrunner for the new “Daredevil” show, after previous head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman exited amid a major creative overhaul. Ord and Corman will still be credited as executive producers.

Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead — who directed on Marvel’s “Moon Knight” and are the lead directors on Season 2 of “Loki” — will step in to direct the rest of the first season of “Daredevil: Born Again.” As part of the show’s creative overhaul, Marvel released the previously hired directors for Season 1 after production shut down amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. Elements of the material that were already shot will be incorporated into the series, but the show overall is meant to head in a new direction.

Exclusive: The Rookie‘s Alexi Hawley has signed a rich new deal with eOne. The two-year pact extends Hawley’s previous exclusive deal for television and new media content at the studio. It also includes a first look deal for feature films. As part of the agreement, Hawley will launch a production company.

Exclusive: In a competitive situation, Netflix has landed an untitled espionage drama from Entertainment One and Hypnotic that is a star vehicle for Noah Centineo, who’s playing Atom Smasher in the Dwayne Johnson DC/New Line film Black Adam. The hourlong series, which has received an eight-episode order, is created by The Rookie creator Alexi Hawley who will serve as showrunner. Hawley and Centineo will be executive producers alongside Hypnotic’s Doug Liman, Gene Klein and David Bartis.

Centineo will play a fledgling lawyer at the CIA who becomes enmeshed in dangerous international power politics when a former asset threatens to expose the nature of her long-term relationship with the agency, unless they exonerate her of a serious crime. When Deadline first heard about the series package several weeks ago when it was shopped at auction, the working title was Graymail, a term that refers to the threatened revelation of state secrets.

Friendship endures in the new Netflix original series “Firefly Lane.” The project features Katherine Heigl and Sarah Chalke as central characters intent on weathering life’s milestones. For Heigel, this serves as yet another step in restoring her reputation as a leading actress; it’s been a slow climb that has seen the former “Grey’s Anatomy” star appeared on “Suits” and “State of Affairs.” Chalke herself is building off memorable moments on series such as “Scrubs.”

Exclusive: A century and a half before Kamala Harris became the first woman on an winning U.S. presidential ticket, Victoria Woodhull was the first woman to run for president. The remarkable story of the feminist icon is the subject of a limited series, with Katherine Heigl set to portray Woodhull and executive produce. The project, titled Woodhull, hails from Oakhurst Entertainment and is currently out to showrunners.

The Morning Show star Gugu Mbatha-Raw is sticking with Apple TV+ after landing the lead role in a new psychological thriller series from High Fidelity co-creator and exec producer Veronica West.

The streamer has handed a straight-to-series order for Surface, which comes from Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Apple Studios. Apple didn’t disclose any other details or logline for the project.

The eight-part series was created and written by West, who has also written on shows including Brothers & Sisters, Gcb and State of Affairs and is a co-exec producer of Showtime’s extension of Dexter. She will exec produce Surface alongside Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter of Hello Sunshine. Production is slated to begin next year.

ABC is developing a female-led drama series set in the world of DC politics, Variety has learned exclusively.

The potential series is based on the book “Yes She Can: 10 Stories of Hope & Change from Young Female Staffers of the Obama White House.” The book features essays from ten women who worked in various capacities during the Obama administration. It was compiled by Molly Dillon, who served as policy adviser to the Domestic Policy Council’s Office of Urban Affairs, Justice and Opportunity.

Veronica West will serve as writer and executive producer on the project, with The District’s Ruben Fleischer and David Bernad also executive producing. ABC Studios will produce, with The District currently under an overall deal at the studio.

Now was supposed to be a happy time indeed for Stx Entertainment. If all had gone according to plan, “The Happytime Murders” would have been a smash summer hit and the studio would be laughing all the way to the bank with a successful Ipo under its belt.

But the Melissa McCarthy movie tanked at the box office, pulling in only $25 million worldwide despite costing $40 million to make. And the planned Ipo on the Hong Kong stock exchange is stuck in limbo, with the soonest a listing could take place pushed back to November, well past its end-of-summer target date.

Stx Entertainment, as has long been suggested would be the case, has filed for an Ipo on the Hong Kong stock exchange. If accepted, the proposal would make Bob Simonds’ burgeoning studio the first U.S.-based entertainment company to go public on the Hong Kong exchange.

The company was valued at $1.5B last year, however, it has been reported previously that the company could be valued as high as $3.5B after the Ipo. Since its inception, Stx has been modeling itself to become a major entertainment company along the lines of Viacom and this is yet another step in the path to achieve that goal.

Stx Entertainment CEO Simonds has been hinting that they might go public for some two and a half years now when China’s Tencent and Hong Kong telecom giant Pccw led an investment round in Stx with the specific aim of building a studio.

The Show Was Dumb No Doubt About It

I feel like staying far away from Civil War II this week. How far away? I’m not even writing about comic books. That far.

Doubt was another attempt to do a Shonda Rhimes style show without Shonda Rhimes. CBS tried to hedge its bets by having former Grey’s Anatomy Katherine Heigl headline Doubt. Did that help? Even less than her presence helped in her last show, State of Affairs. State of Affairs lasted 13 episodes. CBS pulled Doubt after only two episodes. Which is one more episode than I was able to last. Doubt was such a huge turkey it could have fed the Eight is Enough brood and still have had enough to give the Brady Bunch leftovers. But I digest.

CBS has pulled Doubt off the schedule effective immediately, EW has learned.

The drama — which starred Grey’s Anatomy alum Katherine Heigl as a defense lawyer who falls for her charismatic, but possibly guilty, client (Steve Pasquale) — debuted to 5.31 million viewers and 0.8 in the 18-49 demo, below its time slot predecessor Code Black. The show dropped further in week 2 to 4.03 million viewers and 0.6 in the demo before CBS swiftly replaced it.

Next week, the network will rebroadcast an episode of Bull on Wednesday at 10 p.m. Et, with Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders...

CBS is removing all Doubt from its primetime lineup.

The Katherine Heigl legal drama has been yanked off the schedule after just two airings, TVLine has learned. In its place, CBS will air Season 2 of Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders, beginning Wednesday, March 8 at 10/9c. (Next Wednesday, a Bull rerun will air in Doubt‘s former timeslot.)

CBS’ Doubt debuted on Wednesday night to 5.3 million total viewers and a 0.8 rating (per finals), placing below time slot predecessor Code Black‘s season premiere (6.4 mil/1.2), finale (6.1 mil/0.9) and sophomore average (6 mil/1.0).

Katherine Heigl makes her television return on Wednesday on CBS’ Doubt.

Heigl is joined by Elliott Gould, Dule Hill and Laverne Cox for a legal drama that’s CBS’ attempt at cracking Shondaland’s ABC hits, even using two Grey’s Anatomy writers to do it.

Doubt comes in somewhere in the middle of current CBS and ABC fare. It's not too soapy or crazy like Scandal, and it's not too procedural like Bull. It stands on it's own, but its stability can't be determined based on what I've seen so far.

Doubt centers on a boutique law firm overseen by an attorney, Isaiah, (Gould), with an activist’s heart. He’s not only lived the life, but has carried his code over to his practice.

He maintains a very vigilant standard of operation and expects those who serve with him to do the same.

There’s lots of movement in the Portland Police Department these days: In addition to Grimm‘s Capt. Renard leaving the force to become mayor, State of Affairs star Chris McKenna is joining the NBC supernatural drama as a “formidable” lieutenant, TVLine has learned.

McKenna will play Lt. Grossante, a “formidable and driven” an “military-type” cop, per the official character description. McKenna, who announced his casting via Twitter on Tuesday, is officially signed on for one episode but will probably appear in more.

Doubt will arrive on CBS at midseason, and the latest pregnancy news of its star will not affect the series. Doubt stars Katherine Heigl, who was last seen on television on State of Affairs on NBC.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the new series will start production next month, and there are plans to work around her pregnancy. She is expecting her third child with husband Josh Kelley. The couple has two adopted daughters.

Heigl shared a sonogram of her next arrival, a boy, on her website earlier this week, and she said the following in a post on her website, according to Us Magazine:

Universal Pictures' burgeoning Monster Movie Universe is shaping up quite nicely. Deadline is reporting that Courtney B.
