Moana 2 is catching up with the global haul of Despicable Me 4 and will soon be the #3 biggest film of 2024. It has surpassed a huge milestone at the worldwide box office. It has also beaten Wicked at the domestic box office chart. Scroll below for the deets.

Despicable Me 4 is part of the Despicable Me franchise, which began in 2010 and is the highest-grossing animated franchise. The franchise crossed the $5 billion mark after the release of the 4th film last year. It was directed by Chris Renaud and is the third highest-grossing film of 2024. Steve Carell returned as the voice of Gru. The cast featured Kristen Wiig, Pierre Coffin, Joey King, Miranda Cosgrove, Steve Coogan, Sofía Vergara, Stephen Colbert, Renaud, Madison Polan, Dana Gaier, Chloe Fineman, and Will Ferrell.

Despicable Me 4 collected $361 million at the US box office and $608.1 million overseas.

The red carpet has been rolled out, the suits and gowns have been set free, and the statuettes have been shined, which can only mean one thing: Awards season is back back back! Last night, at a ceremony in Los Angeles hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, it was the 2025 Golden Globes' turn to kick off the Hollywood festivities, offering us our first real sense of the top dogs and dark horses as the BAFTAs and Oscars inch ever nearer. And so far, Jacques Audiard's trans mobster musical Emilia Pérez and Brady Corbet's monumental epic The Brutalist are leading the pack, with the two movies picking up four and three gongs respectively on a night in which major contenders Anora, Conclave, and Wicked were largely relegated to the sidelines.

The 82nd Golden Globes awards ceremony has just finished up, and while a number of comic book, sci-fi, fantasy and horror movies and TV shows were nominated in several major categories, only a few prevailed on the night.

Colin Farrell won Best actor in an anthology, limited series, or TV movie for his lead performance as Oz Cobb in The Penguin, but co-star Cristin Milioti lost out to Jodie Foster (True Detective: Night Country).

Kathryn Hahn was nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Marvel Studios' Agatha All Along, but Jean Smart picked up the award for Hacks.

Deadpool and Wolverine was nominated in the recently-added Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category, along with the likes of Alien: Romulus Twisters and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but Wicked skipped away with the gong.

The ceremony, hosted by roaster extraordinaire Nikki Glaser (nimbly righting the ship after last year’s Jo Koy-helmed debacle), featured showdowns of epic proportions with heavyweights like The Brutalist and Conclave competing in dramatic film categories, while Emilia Pérez, Anora, and Wicked squared off in the musical/comedy slate.

When the dust settled, Emilia Pérez, which came into the evening with a record 10 nominations, led the way among films with four awards: Best Comedy/Musical, best non-English Film, supporting actress Zoe Saldaña, and Best Song (“El Mal”). The Brutalist tallied three awards: Best Drama, director Brady Corbet, and lead actor Adrien Brody. As expected, Kieran Culkin (A Real Pain) received the supporting actor trophy, and Wicked won for cinematic and box-office achievement.

As Vin Diesel took the stage to present the Golden Globe for Cinematic Box Office at the 2025 ceremony, he nodded to his former Fast & Furious costar Dwayne Johnson, who was sitting front and center in the audience the whole night.

“Hey Dwayne,” was all Diesel said, but the Moana 2 star acknowledged the greeting with a slight nod in his lilac suit.

The pair previously worked together on The Fast & the Furious franchise, and since 2016, reports of behind-the-scenes drama and a feud between the two actors have circulated even beyond the production and release of The Fate of the Furious (2017), which marked a big confrontation between their two characters.

Johnson joined the franchise in 2011 in the fifth film, Fast Five (2011) as Luke Hobbs, and his character later got a spinoff called Hobbs & Shaw (2019).

“My heart is full of gratitude,” Saldaña said from the podium at Sunday’s ceremony about her first-ever Golden Globes win. She went on to thank the Netflix film’s cast and crew, including director Jacques Audiard, star Karla Sofía Gascón and fellow category nominee Selena Gomez: “This is a first time for me, and I’m just so blessed that I’m sharing this with Selena and Karla and Jacques and all of my fellow nominees. Heading into the weekend of Jan. 3 – Jan. 5, Mufasa: The Lion King continues its claw-biting race against Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which narrowly blocked the Disney picture from claiming the top spot last weekend. Showing greater holding power, Mufasa is expected to squeak out a first-place finish this weekend with around $20 million. Sonic is expected to drop to second, but it’s going to be close.

The British Academy has unveiled the results of the first round of voting across all 25 categories for the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, with two very different thrillers leading the pack of longlisted features.

Jacques Audiard’s “Emilia Pérez,” a Spanish-language music-thriller that was picked up by Netflix in Cannes, has emerged ahead of the race with slots in 15 categories, including best film, director, leading actress and three in the supporting actress list. Meanwhile “Conclave,” Focus Features’ Papal mystery-thriller from Edward Berger set within the Vatican, has 14, including best film, director and leading actor for Ralph Fiennes.

South Korea’s box office admissions dipped 1.6% in 2024 while local productions recorded a significant rise in market share across the year.

There were 123 million admissions in 2024, according to Kobis, the Korean Film Council’s box office tracking service. This is down on the 125.1 million admissions recorded in 2023, which had marked an 11% rise on 2022 as the country continued to attract cinemagoers back to theatres after the Covid-19 pandemic.

Not even the dynamic duos of Joy and Anxiety, Deadpool and Wolverine, Gru and his minions or Paul Atreides and those massive sandworms could push the 2024 box office to pre-pandemic heights.

Domestic ticket sales have wound up at $8.7 billion for the year, down than 3.3% from 2023 (when revenues hit $9.04 billion) and 23.5% from 2019 (when revenues reached $11.3 billion), the last normal year at the box office, according to Comscore. Admissions, expected to hit approximately 800 million, also declined from pre-covid heights of roughly 1.3 billion. It’s the first post-pandemic year that overall revenues didn’t improve upon the last, though box office prognosticators attribute the downturn to the lighter release schedule that resulted from 2023’s actors and writers strikes.

“The 2024 box office was healthy for six months, and unhealthy for the other half. During the summer and year-end, big franchise series worked and records were broken,” says David A. Gross, who runs the movie consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research.

The box office battle royale between Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King continued this holiday week, with Deadline reporting that the Disney prequel grossed $10.3 million on New Year’s Day to Sonic’s $8.95 million. However, in terms of totals, Mufasa is trailing Sonic, with $138 million domestically to the latter’s $160.4 million. Moana 2 was in third place, with a $5.1 million gross, although it was nearly edged out by Nosferatu, with the Robert Eggers film making $4.96 million, with a $53 million tally. That makes it Eggers’s highest-grossing film to date, beating The Northman’s $34.2 million domestic take by a long shot.

Wicked wasn’t too far behind, with a $4.63 New Year’s gross adding to its $437 million total, despite now being available on PVOD. A Complete Unknown was in 6th place with $3.1 million, for a $31.7 million total. By the end of the weekend, it should be able to...

France was one of the few markets to see admissions increase year-on-year in 2024, driven by a powerhouse top 10, three of which were local blockbusters.

Admissions reached 181.3 million admissions, up a slight 0.5% on 2023, according to figures from Comscore and the Cnc. Total box office for the year was an estimated €1.3 billion ($1.35bn) based on an average ticket price of €7.20, driven largely by French films that took a 44.4% market share, the highest since 2008.

However this was still 12.8% down from the pre-pandemic yearly average of the 2017-2019 period.

It saw another jump on Monday, despite the other two PG movies, Mufasa: The Lion King and Sonic the Hedgehog 3, running in the cinemas. Led by a near-tie between two second weekend animated franchise films, then bolstered by two unusual wide Christmas day specialized-distributor releases, U.S./Canada theaters saw their best post-holiday grosses since 2019.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount) and “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Disney) were less than $1 million apart for the three day lead, while #3 “Nosferatu” (Focus) and #6 “A Complete Unknown” (Searchlight) combined added a much needed $34 million to the total. Robert Eggers’ Dracula-esque take on the F.W. Murnau classic contributed over $21 million of that by itself.

The $165 million three day gross is a 45 percent improvement over last year, and, with two days left, will help lessen the 2024 shortfall from last year to 3.5 percent. But for all the positive signs this uptick suggests, the total falls below any unadjusted gross for the weekend since 2010, and in terms of attendance is one third or more less than that period and earlier.

Universal’s “Wicked” is officially the highest-grossing Broadway adaptation in global box office history, overtaking 2008’s “Mamma Mia” to notch the harmonious milestone.

“Wicked” has generated $634 million worldwide after six weeks of release while “Mamma Mia” amassed $611 million (not adjusted for inflation) by the end of its box office run. “Wicked,” starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, has earned $424 million domestically and, weeks ago, surpassed 1978’s “Grease” ($188.62 million) as the biggest Broadway adaptation at the domestic box office. These benchmarks are good news for Universal since the second half of the big-budget musical, “Wicked: For Good,” opens in 2025. This record is also notable because it bucks the recent trend of underseen stage-to-screen remakes, including 2023’s “The Color Purple” and 2021’s “West Side Story,” “Dear Evan Hansen” and “In the Heights.”

After a month in theaters, Moana 2 continues to sail strong at the global box office. It’s already the third-highest-grossing animated film of the year and is on track to become the second, aiming to surpass $1 billion worldwide. Over the Christmas weekend, it remained one of the top choices for families, keeping its spot in the top five domestically.

The movie has now earned about $395 million in the U.S. and another $488 million internationally, bringing its total to $882 million, as per Box Office Mojo.

With a production budget of $150 million—lower than what Pixar typically spends—it has already surpassed the original Moana, which brought in just under $690 million in 2016. Streaming success for the first movie convinced Disney to make this sequel a theatrical event rather than a streaming series.

“Mufasa: The Lion King” (Disney) held the #1 position for both Christmas Day and December 26. Its two-day gross of $26.7 million edged out #2 “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount) by over $4 million. However, because “Sonic” last weekend was $28 million ahead of “Mufasa,” who comes out ahead for the full Christmas season remains unclear, though ultimately “Mufasa” could have the edge for total domestic gross.

At this point, 2024 will have an adequate Christmas compared to recent years. Grosses for December 25 and 26 are about $5 million ahead of 2023. But the $116 million two-day total was dramatically lower than the years before Covid struck. From 2016-2019, the two days grossed between $138 million and $177 million. At 2024 prices, that would be as much as $235 million, meaning attendance is down as much as half from those years.

Mufasa: The Lion King can cheer up a little as the weekend actual numbers suggest it is slightly higher than the reported debut weekend collection. The film is expected to underperform at the box office, and all eyes are on the Christmas boost this week. Moana 2 continues its strong run at the box office and is now very close to achieving a huge milestone worldwide. The movie is expected to achieve that mark before entering the fifth weekend. Despite the release of Mufasa: The Lion King, the Moana sequel has collected another strong weekend. It has also beaten Inside Out’s domestic haul. Keep scrolling for more.

Few weekends annually are less certain indices of future grosses than the one before Christmas. That said, a combined $97 million for the openings of two new family-oriented titles set theaters up for a healthy holiday season.

“Sonic the Hedgehog 3” (Paramount) was the clear winner with $62 million, with “Mufasa: The Lion King” (Disney) second with $35 million. This is the first time two films on this pre-holiday date have debuted at $35 million or more, and with higher ticket prices today a factor, the best overall since 2011.

The weekend also saw the start of New York/Los Angeles platform runs of two significant awards contenders. New York Film Critics’ Best Film winner “The Brutalist” (A24) despite an over three and a half hour running time averaged nearly $67,000 in four theaters, while Pedro Almodóvar’s first English-language film “The Room Next Door” (Sony Pictures Classics) started with $107,000 in six.

Paramount’s third “Sonic” adventure has opened at No. 1 with $62 million from 3,761 North American theaters. Bolstered by positive reviews and strong audience scores, the film beat initial expectations of $55 million to $60 million and looks to remain a holiday hit through the new year. “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” was tracking for a trilogy-low start but instead opened above the original 2020 “Sonic the Hedgehog” ($58 million) and just below the 2022 sequel (a series-best $72 million).

This third installment, directed by Jeff Fowler, took in $26 million Friday, putting it on pace for a franchise-best opening weekend. Mufasa will have to wait to be king, settling for second with a projected $35 million. Moana 2 and Wicked are in a dead heat for third place, both projected to add about $14 million to their already-blockbuster numbers. The big surprise this weekend is Angel Studios’ Homestead claiming fifth place with over $5 million in less than 1,900 theaters. Ben Smallbone directed the faith-based thriller starring Neil McDonough, which follows a former Green Beret and other survivors taking refuge inside an elaborate compound following an attack on America.

With the box office smash Moana 2 crushing box office records, Disney has added another monster musical to their filmography. Few companies are more associated with the genre than Disney. Not only do they win big prizes in film, but Disney Musicals have taken over Broadway for years at a time. Moana 2 will still pocket several hundred million dollars before it’s done. That, as well as the impending release of Mufasa, make this the perfect time to look back over the best Disney Musicals in history.

Of note, this is a contentious discussion, to say the least. There are dozens of movies and musicals to choose from, all with valid rationales behind their inclusion. This required some hardline rules, which eliminated a few movies in the process. To qualify, we required four songs, sung for the purposes of plot by a character in the movie, to be eligible for inclusion.

While we’re still months away from Disney’s live-action Lilo & Stitch movie, the mouse-eared studio is happy to bait fans with brief glimpses at the upcoming adaptation’s main character. Today’s Lilo & Stitch teaser finds Stitch being held high in the air at the beach, a nod to the iconic scene from The Lion King when Rafiki presents a baby Simba to animals of the Pride Lands. Looking closely, you can see Stitch’s orange swimmies, a device that keeps inexperienced swimmers from drowning. I suspect Stitch is adept at the doggie paddle, but it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Oscar-Grammy-Emmy winner Atticus Ross and the duo behind the music in Emilia Pérez lead the nominees at the 2025 Society of Composers & Lyricists Awards.

Ross earned two nominations for his musical work on Shogun and a nod for “Compress/Repress” from Challengers. Clément Ducol and Camille received three nominations for the Netflix film starring Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez, including two bids for outstanding original song for a comedy or musical visual media production. Ross, Ducol and Camille’s works have been shortlisted at the Academy Awards; nine of the 15 songs shortlisted are nominated at the Scl Awards, while six scores shortlisted made the Scl list.
