Wild Bunch TV’s “Arcadia,” a high-concept sci-fi thriller series, will return for a second season across 17 territories.
The series, produced by Banijay Entertainment’s Belgian banner Jonnydepony, is set in a near-future, in a society where citizens’ rights and entitlements are determined by their scores.
“Arcadia” follows a “family of hardworking people with a high score and a good life, that is, until the authoritarian regime discovers father, Pieter, tricked the algorithm and manipulated the score of one of his daughters. As a result, he is deported outside Arcadia and the scores of the family members are lowered, changing their lives for good,” the synopsis reads.
“Arcadia” was penned by Bas Adriaensen (“Blackout”), Zita Theunynck and Philippe De Schepper, who is also showrunner. Belgian director Joël Vanhoebrouck, whose credits include “Homegrown,” “Blackout” and “The Infiltrator,” will direct Season 2, taking over from Dutch director Tim Oliehoek who helmed season one.

The CW has always had a thing or two for an international acquisition, and it seems that this strategy is continuing under new ownership.
The network has acquired British supernatural drama series The Rising and Australian surfer drama Barons for its summer lineup. Both series will debut on Monday, May 29, with The Rising airing at 8 p.m. and Barons at 9.
It comes after Nexstar acquired the network and brought in Brad Schwartz to oversee programming. Deadline has revealed that the network will lean further into unscripted programming, with the hire of Heather Olander and the recent pickup of FBoy Island, and it seems global drama is also on the cards as it trims its original scripted budget.
The Rising comes from Sky in the UK, as Deadline revealed back in 2019, and is a remake of Belgian supernatural crime thriller Hotel Beau Séjour.

“The Rising” Season 2 has been canceled just months before production was due to start, Variety has learned.
Cast and crew were gearing up for the Sky Studios show when they were told to down tools two months before principal photography got underway. “It was canceled before they were due to start filming,” a source familiar with the project told Variety. “All the cast and everything [were ready to go] and they just pulled the plug.”
Variety understands there were a “number of reasons” the production will not go ahead.
The second season, which was set to be titled “Risen,” was due to have a similar premise to the first but with different characters, settings and themes, turning the show into something of an anthology series.

The UK owes many of its proudest creations to other countries. Our national dish is chicken tikka masala, the Romans gave us everything from plumbing to underfloor heating, and let’s not even get started on the Royal family.
So it should come as no surprise that some top UK TV shows are based on original series from around the world. Some of these are obvious, like Drag Race UK and Law & Order being imported from the US, or The Masked Singer originating in South Korea, but some UK remakes are less up front about their international origins.

Warning: contains The Rising spoilers.
The Rising is filled with all the twists and turns viewers have come to expect from a murder mystery drama. Adapted from Belgian crime thriller Beau Séjour, The Rising is set in small town in the British countryside, with sweeping landscapes and a thriving motocross community. The extra supernatural twist in this particular mystery is that its central character Neve Kelly (Clara Rugaard) is dead from the start, but for some reason remains on earth. She can be seen and heard by a select few, and with their help, she’s determined to figure out who murdered her and why. In this eight-episode Sky series, the first six instalments are spent making discoveries and following false leads. The show pulls no punches, and takes you on an emotional journey where no-one, for the most part, is presented as either entirely good or bad until the killer is revealed.

Warning: contains plot details for The Rising episodes 1-8 .
At first glance, The Rising is just another show about another dead girl. It would be understandable for viewers to dismiss it as one more drama in which a woman suffers life-ending violence at the hand of a man. As the story of a murdered teenager wandering the Earth and trying figure out who took her life, The Rising brings to mind the controversial Netflix adaptation Thirteen Reasons Why, but is tonally closer to acclaimed crime mystery Mare of Easttown. Based on Belgian drama Hotel Beau Sejour and written by The Pact‘s Pete McTighe, it’s set in a closely knit community that keeps everything pleasant enough on the surface, but contains lies, secrets and much worse. However, there’s something different about this series. Its murder victim Neve (Clara Rugaard) is not only present, but also used as more...

Sky Studios’ first ever full in-house production, The Rising, combines the murder of a young woman, Neve, with a whodunnit story that she leads from beyond the grave. Its executive producer Julian Stevens said giving her “agency” to propel the story allowed the drama to sensitively combine themes of violence against women and the afterlife.
The eight-part series, based on Belgian drama Beau Sejour, launches on mainstream channel Sky Max in the UK on Friday (April 22). It follows Neve (Clara Rugaard) as she comes to terms with her own murder and becomes determined to get justice for the killing using newly acquired supernatural powers.
There has been much debate around depictions of violence against women in TV dramas in the UK, including in BBC dramas Line of Duty and The Fall, the latter of which Stevens worked on. However, by making Neve “active and propulsive,” The Rising “hopefully brings something...

“Now We’Re Sucking Diesel! If you don’t get it, you missed a great series.” Stephen King’s recent discovery of British police thriller Line of Duty – as relayed via a series of highly enthusiastic Tweets – was a delight to witness. King’s zeal is enough to make UK fans wish that he hadn’t binge-watched the BBC series from his home inside the sewers of Derry, Maine, but instead watched it at broadcast pace in the UK, where he would no doubt have made a sizeable contribution to the show’s Twitter larks. (King proved himself happy to join in with online TV show speculation when he correctly predicted the killer in HBO/Sky’s Mare of Easttown. You can bet he’d have had a take on the mystery identity of Line of Duty baddie ‘H’.)

Stephen King, also known as the world’s most successful author, has been giving out tons of viewing recommendations to help his fans get through the quarantine. In the past, the writer has stuck to his usual Mo: thriller and horror. Recently, however, he’s expanded his tastes quite a bit, and these are all the movies and shows on Netflix that he’s given the thumbs up to.
For starters, King recommended Spike Lee’s new film Da 5 Bloods almost as soon as it was released. The first picture which the acclaimed director and civil rights activist produced in collaboration with the streamer, it’s quite a departure from his previous work. Although it’s still very much focused on black life and culture, this tale, about a group of war veterans, takes place not in Bed Stuy, but the jungles of Vietnam. King called it “fabulous,” and we agree.

Netflix has been the saving grace of millions during the quarantine that has forced everyone inside in the midst of our ongoing global pandemic. As a matter of fact, Us Netflix subscribers are averaging 3+ hours a day on the streaming service, indicating that a fairly substantial part of everyone’s lives is catching up on movies or binging their favorite shows. The virus has even caused an all-time high for Netflix stocks, resulting in the company becomeing worth more than Disney. If that doesn’t blow your mind, nothing will.
That said, it’s been up to Netflix to ensure everyone continues to receive quality content to keep them entertained, and so far, they’ve been doing a really great job. May has seen an influx of fantastic films and shows, and there are sure to be plenty more to come when June rolls around.

No matter how long the coronavirus-induced quarantine regulations will last, we’ll never run out of things to watch. Should you have already completed your personal watch list though, fear not, as internationally acclaimed horror and thriller writer Stephen King has you covered. And the best part is, all his picks are available on Netflix.
Mostly, King’s collection includes some predictably gory and suspenseful entries. His first, for instance, is the 2019 zombie apocalypse web drama Black Summer. Set in the same universe as the ambitious Syfy show Z Nation, it follows a team of ordinary people as they embark on a quest to transport the single survivor of a zombie virus plague from New York to California. King had some very lofty things to mention about the show in his recent tweet, and watching it during an actual pandemic might amp up the scare factor, too.

Cannes — Leticia Dolera’s Spanish women’s comedy “Perfect Life” swept the 2nd Canneseries TV festival on Wednesday night, scooping both best series and best special performance for its female leads, Dolera herself, Celia Freijeiro and Aixa Villagrán.
With Israel’s “Nehama,” a Hot Original dramedy created, co-written and starring Reshef Levi winning best performance for Levi, the 2nd Canneseries prize winners can be seen as a vindication of the drama series’ decided bet on comedy as a way to portray key gender issues.
“Now more than ever, it is important for women and men to get together and recognize the importance of gender equality,” jury member Kathrin Winnick said during the awards ceremony.
In “Perfect Life’s” case that’s gender stereotypes with its protagonists, male and female, fall short of the high-achievement traditional role models they have been brought up on – a home, husband, children. They would be happier,...

Cannes — Playing Official Competition at Canneseries, “Studio Tarara’ protagonist Ricki Boelsens, late 40s but with a hugely lived-in face, looks at himself in the mirror. There’s a poster of him as a young man starring in King Lear. Now he’s just checked out of hospital after a drink and cocaine bender at a party on studio comedy sketch show “Studio Tarara.” He can hardly remember his lines.
So is he the dead person who jumped or was pushed off the studio roof prompting the grainy bluish-noir nighttime scenes of shocked studio employees which begins every episode of the show?
Details of the victim’s identity are teased to the audience in Flemish series “Studio Tatara,” along with Ricki’s descent into hell as he’s replaced on the show by another actor, part of a more general spiral of self-destruction. Ricky’s addicted to alcohol and drugs – – fellow-comedian Sandra to sex.

For a decade Hassan helmed one of Somalia’s most successful pirate gangs, acquiring millions of dollars in ransom payments. In 2013 he declared he had retired, but authorities weren’t ready to just shrug it off, and the U.N., MI5 and the FBI combined on a five-year manhunt leading to Hassan’s eventual capture.

Madrid — Sports streamer Dazn dazzled on Wednesday in Madrid, officially launching in Spain, its eighth territory worldwide, with rights to Spain of MotoGP, Premiere League and Euro League basketball, a thumping promo at a press conference, a beaming MotoGP world champion Marc Marquez on stage, and the double-backed announcements that Brazilian soccer icon Neymar had signed on as a Dazn global ambassador and ex-Chelsea, Real Madrid and Man U.’s José Mourinho, the most acerbic of soccer managers, as a commentator.
But can Dazn actually make money?
History is not on its side. “The market for broadcasting top-notch sporting events, which means soccer in Europe, and national leagues, looks like one where the winner takes all, because the winner creates synergies bundling [sports] with entertainment content and sustaining the interest of the whole family,” said François Godard, at Enders Analysis, citing the fate of sports rights contenders such as Setanta Sports,...

Need a quick horror fix? Look no further than the new Netflix series Tabula Rasa, which we are calling the Dutch American Horror Story. It has all the trappings of the Ryan Murphy thriller, complete with haunted house, mental asylum, and a seemingly possessed child. Don't say you haven't been warned. The show premieres on March 15 and centers around Annemie D'Haeze, portrayed by actress Veerle Baetens, who loses her memory following a car accident. However, she quickly becomes a key figure in a missing person case and must reconstruct her memories to clear her name. This makes sense since the Latin phrase Tabula Rasa translates to "clean slate." The only problem: a seriously haunted house where she lives with her husband and child — who don't believe Annemie when it comes to the red powder she sees falling from the ceilings or the red riding hood-esque demons she encounters in the hallways.
