Season three of the New Zealand based podcast "The Worst Idea of All Time" is dedicated to watching "We Are Your Friends" once a week every week for one year and then reviewing the movie.
The film grossed an average $758 from 2,333 theaters in its opening weekend. Due to the film's disastrous box office receipts, Warner Bros. canceled the Blu-ray release and instead, released the film on standard DVD (the only way to get a Blu-ray copy is to import a foreign release). Overall, this was the fourth worst debut for a film with a 2,000+ theater average. It was surpassed later in 2015 by Rock the Kasbah (2015) ($731 average) and Jem and the Holograms (2015) ($570), both of which opened on October 23, 2015.
The final song, "Cole's Memories" can be heard throughout the movie.
Max Joseph was forced to miss out on appearing in the first five episodes of the fourth season of his series, Catfish: The TV Show (2012), in order to direct the film.
Alesso: Famous DJ/Producer, during Cole's set at the pool party. Alesso is the guy who Cole asks to take over when Cole's friends arrive.
Nev Schulman: Director Max Joseph's fellow Executive Producer from Catfish: The TV Show (2012), as a Party Guest during the art show scene.
Nicky Romero: In addition to Dillon Francis and Alesso, Nicky Romero made a cameo just before Cole went on stage and played his song at Summerfest.
