Netflix has clarified its intentions with its test of allowing users to speed up or slow down content playback speeds, saying that the company has been sensitive to creator concerns with the feature and has no plans to roll out a new feature in the short term.
Netflix vice president Keela Robison wrote in a blog post late Monday that the ability to vary playback speeds on Netflix shows or movies — as slow as half the original speed or 1.5 times faster — is a test limited only to Android mobile devices and is a feature that has frequently been requested by users.
“We’ve been sensitive to creator concerns and haven’t included bigger screens, in particular TVs, in this test,” Robison wrote. “We have no plans to roll any of these tests out in the short term. And whether we introduce these features for everyone at some point will depend on the feedback we receive.

Gillian Jacobs, most recently the star of Judd Apatow’s Netflix series Love, will star in Larry, a horror movie being made by Amblin and writer-director Jacob Chase.

The story tells of a troubled young boy (Robertson), and his family who become the target of a monster who materialized through electronic devices such as smartphones and tablets. The project is based on Chase’s horror short and harkens back to ...

We like to think we’re beyond the closet. But for every Lgbt child who confidently proclaims their identity before puberty hits, there are innumerable others who keep themselves sequestered, be it out of shame, survival or some terrible mixture of both. Like this year’s theatrical hit Love, Simon, writer-director Craig Johnson’s Alex Strangelove, premiering on Netflix, tells a coming-out story that’s more on the gentle side. That softheartedness, however, proves to be a fairly adequate delivery mechanism for some tough and tender observations about modern queerness.

With its flashy red carpet premieres and hectic market, the Cannes Film Festival presents the grandest film industry spectacle in the world. With all the lively images of celebrities walking around outside the theaters, and news of dealmaking taking place in the Marché du Film, it’s almost too easy to forget that Cannes is actually a showcase for new movies, and one that faces more pressure to deliver quality than any other program out there. For 71 years, Cannes has asserted its dominance as the preeminent showcase for international cinema. Even as the way movies are seen and discussed continues to evolve, Cannes remains one constant on the world stage.
Of course, the 2018 edition has already demonstrated the contrast between the festival’s priorities and industry shifts after a public feud with Netflix led the platform to pull its movies from the lineup, while the distributors for some high-profile titles...

One of the big questions many have coming away from Lisa D’Apolito’s mesmerizing feature documentary Love, Gilda which kicked off Tribeca on Wednesday is why Gilda Radner Saturday Night Live peers Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and even Father Guido Sarducci (aka Don Novello) aren’t interviewed in the movie.
Truth be told D’Apolito did in fact reach out to all of Radner’s peers -well over 100 names- however, some never responded. No hard feelings, D’Apolito gets it.
“It’s hard for everybody (to talk about Radner),” says the director, “People loved her so much and to talk about her, was very painful because it brought back that loss. I totally understand why people didn’t want to be in it. It’s personal.”
Of those SNL folks who worked with Radner in the doc are her writing partner Alan Zweibel, SNL producer Lorne Michaels, Martin Short...

Reprising some familiar stories but filling in plenty of fond nuance, the lead actors and director of Scarface marked the film’s 35th anniversary with a crowd-pleasing Q&A session Thursday night at the Tribeca Film Festival.
After a screening of the 1983 film, director Brian De Palma joined Al Pacino, Michelle Pfeiffer and Steven Bauer (who played Tony Montana’s gangster partner) to reminisce. As they were brought onstage one by one, the sold-out Beacon Theatre crowd let out loud, concert-worthy roars and gave Pacino a standing ovation before anyone had uttered a word.
“Bombast was part of what we were trying to say with the movie,” Pacino said. “It was bigger than life.”
Pacino recalled stumbling on the original 1932 Scarface when it was playing at the long-shuttered Tiffany Theatre on Sunset Boulevard in L.A. Seeing star Paul Muni on screen, he remembered thinking, “I want to be him!

Keeping with one of its themes this year on female empowerment, the Tribeca Film Festival opened last night with a doc about one of the city’s 1970s comedy trailblazers, Saturday Night Live‘s Gilda Radner, with the CNN film Love, Gilda.
It’s the second time that Tribeca has opened with a documentary about one of Gotham’s institutions, 2015’s opener being the SNL time capsule feature Live From New York!
However, Love, Gilda delves into the intricacies of Radner’s life from her childhood weight problems to her segue from Toronto’s comedy scene to SNL, and ultimately how she was determined to keep laughing as she battled ovarian cancer before her death in 1989. Much of this is bolstered by director Lisa D’Apolito’s access to a significant amount of Radner’s archives including footage, photos, taped and written diaries.

Typically Tribeca Film Festival press luncheons preview their annual lineup, with a reminder of the event’s social and economic impact to downtown New York in the years post-9/11. However, Tribeca co-boss and two-time Oscar winner Robert De Niro kicked off this year’s 17th annual event at Thalassa Restaurant by jabbing at his favorite punching bag: President Donald Trump.
“Look at all the Fake News writers here today,” joked Robert De Niro to several laughs.
“The country has had a bad year, and you — the press – have taken a lot of hits. America is being run by a madman who wouldn’t recognize the truth if it came inside a bucket of his beloved Colonel Sanders Fried Chicken,” exclaimed De Niro.
“When he doesn’t like what he hears, he dismisses it by saying it’s un-American and damning it as ‘fake news’. But we know the truth. All...

Like the Phantom of the Opera — and “The Phantom of the Opera” — “Love Never Dies” isn’t dead yet.
The musical, mega-composer Andrew Lloyd Webber’s sequel to his record-breaking smash “Phantom of the Opera,” is showing signs of life on the road in the U.S., where the title is turning heads at the box office after a dispiritingly brief premiere engagement on the West End eight years ago.
“We’ve got eight shows on the road right now, and ‘Love Never Dies’ is outselling them all,” said Randy Buck, CEO of Troika Entertainment, the touring musical producer with road versions of “An American in Paris” and “On Your Feet!” among its stable. “Love” is doing so well, in fact, that Buck cops to bigger dreams for the show.

Update: Outgoing Directors’ Fortnight chief Edouard Waintrop revealed a 20-strong 50th anniversary lineup today that includes a return engagement for some, and a surprise inclusion for one of the most controversial filmmakers ever to hit the Croisette. Gaspar Noé will world premiere his Climax, appearing for the first time in the section after turns in Official Selection with such films as Love, Enter The Void and Irreversible. Climax has been kept close to the vest, with some conflicting information circulating (we will update when we know more).

Seattle-based filmmaker Lynn Shelton is best known as a comedic director for her 2009 Sundance hit “Humpday,” but her movies have always had a sensitive side, going back to her 2006 debut “We Go Way Back.” It was only a matter of time before she directed a drama, and with “Outside In,” she has found a key collaborator. Shelton co-wrote the project with Jay Duplass, who stars as a recently incarcerated man enmeshed in a clandestine affair with his old high school teacher (Edie Falco). IndieWire has the exclusive look at the screenplay, which you can read in its entirety below.

Lynn Shelton has made six scruffy relationship dramedies, all set in her hometown of Seattle. When she picked up an agent after “Humpday” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009, she figured she’d pay the bills with the occasional TV episode and continue shooting local movies. That’s not the way it turned out.
Over the last eight years, what began as a season-4 episode of “Mad Men” is now an in-demand career as a television comedy director, from Hulu’s “The Mindy Project” and “Casual” to IFC’s “Maron” and nine episodes of ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat.”
So when Shelton finally reassembled her Seattle film crew to shoot her seventh movie, “Outside In” — produced, co-written and starring Jay Duplass opposite Edie Falco and Kaitlyn Dever — everything was different. First, the movie is Shelton’s first drama. And second, she found herself more prepared than she had ever been.

There are a couple of shows on the Netflix dial that I’m not actually sure has found an audience. “Flaked” would fall into that category, as would “Love.” The Judd Apatow produced comedy never quite leaped into the pop culture conversation, and while I anecdotally know maybe one or two people who have fired it up, the series mostly seems to be something that was watched after they caught up with every other series on their list.

“Crashing” is retaking its place as a beginning-of-the-calendar-year HBO comedy and it’s looking a little different.
The HBO series starring Pete Holmes, loosely drawn from his own experiences rising through the New York comedy scene is heading back for a Season 2, this time with a slightly different outlook on love. This year has been, by all accounts, tumultuous. In the past, viewers might turn to romantic comedies to remind them that everything will be Ok; to distract themselves from the seemingly unending onslaught of disheartening news, and inspire them to believe in the future.
But 2017 has seen a slight shift in the genre’s purpose. This year, more “rom-coms” than ever are taking their stories very, very seriously. From the black comic truths of Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Divorce” to the healing power of love post-trauma in Tig Notaro’s “One Mississippi,” this batch of romantic-minded comedies are addressing issues as honestly as anything else on television.
Sure, there’s still room for flirtatious fun, “will they or won’t they” pairings, and soul-bearing emotional confessions, but the list gathered below speaks to the state of the world: Love can still conquer all, but it’s not a cloaking agent.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of film critics two questions and publishes the results on Monday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best film in theaters right now?”, can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: In honor of Greta Gerwig’s “Lady Bird,” what is the best coming-of-age movie ever made?
Siddhant Adlakha (@SidizenKane), Birth.Movies.Death.
While it may not fit the western paradigm of a traditional coming of age film (neither a high school setting nor teenage angst or confusion find themselves the focus), “Lion” holds the distinction of being a rare modern movie that gets to the root of key questions of dual identity, questions that will only become more prominent in the age of globalism. Greta Gerwig has a story about the moment she knew she would become a director. Shortly after she starred in and co-wrote “Frances Ha” with Noah Baumbach, she met “Orlando” director Sally Potter at a party. Gerwig cornered Potter, to pick her brain.
“I do that with people I admire,” Gerwig said. “I was writing a lot. I was asking her about how she does what she does. Does she do it first thing in the morning in longhand, or many computer drafts? I was being nerdy and needy, and she was answering and being very kind.
“Then she grabbed me by the arm and looked me in the eyes and asked me, ‘What do you really want to ask me about?’ My blood ran cold. ‘You really want to ask me about directing.’
‘How do you know that?’
‘I’m part gypsy and it’s written all over you!

When Greta Gerwig’s already-lauded “Lady Bird” hits limited release later this week, the actress-writer-director will join a long line of other female filmmakers who used their directorial debut (this one is Gerwig’s solo directorial debut, just for clarity’s sake) to not only launch their careers, but make a huge mark while doing it. Gerwig’s Saoirse Ronan-starring coming-of-age tale is an instant classic, and one that shouldn’t come as much of a surprise to anyone who has enjoyed Gerwig’s charming work as a screenwriter in recent years, bolstered by her ear for dialogue and her love of complicated and complex leading ladies.
While Hollywood still lags when it comes to offering up opportunities to its most talented female filmmakers, many of them have overcome the dismal stats to deliver compelling, interesting, and unique first features. In short, they’re good filmmakers who made good movies,...

When it comes to real life tales of romance, Judd Apatow is an expert at finding and cultivating the ones that will resonate with audiences. And Apatow said he’d “never heard anyone tell a story” like the chain of events that led to Kumail Nanjiani and Emily V. Gordon falling in love.
The writer/director/producer who shepherded projects like “Girls,” “Crashing,” and “Love” to the screen worked with Nanjiani and Gordon for years to develop the script that led to one of the year’s most well-received films. Both critically and commercially, audiences found great resonance in Nanjiani and Gordon’s story, which follows how their initial tentative romance was upended when a medical crisis led to Gordon being put in a medically induced coma.

Here at Et, we’re obsessed with a lot of things – and this is what we’re most excited about this week:
Why We’re Obsessed With ‘Hallelujah’
Leonard Cohen’s classic song gets the Vr treatment in this unexpectedly immersive and beautiful take on “Hallelujah.” Los Angeles-based musician Bobby Halvorson performs a five-part a cappella arrangement in-the-round, allowing the viewer to get a full 360-degree experience with the audio and visual changing depending on which direction the user is facing. First premiering at the 2017 Tribeca Film Festival in April, “Hallelujah” was released to the public on Cohen’s birthday. “Combining the transportive qualities of music with virtual reality results in an incredibly emotional and gripping experience, we hope the launch of ‘Halleujah’ will provide a chance for people to connect with the iconic ballad in an entirely new way,” Within co-founder and CEO Chris Milk said in a statement to Et.

Despite their best efforts, the professionals at Saturday Night Live find themselves laughing right along with us every now and then. It’s such a storied tradition that Andy Samberg and Adam Sandler even sang a song about breaking during the show’s 40th anniversary special.
Although the performers are supposed to avoid it at all costs, getting the giggles during sketches has led to some of the funniest moments in SNL history, so we’re looking back at some of those classic crack-ups that still get us every time.

On Sept. 27, 1992, The Ben Stiller Show premiered on Fox, showcasing the titular star’s now well-known talent for emulating celebrities and crafting original characters. The sketch comedy series was abruptly canceled before its first season finished airing, but almost a year after it debuted, the show won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing in a Variety or Music Program.
“We had no idea,” Stiller told Et backstage at the 45th Primetime Emmy Awards. Apparently, none of the show’s writers had attended the ceremony with the notion they might beat out comedy institutions such as Saturday Night Live and Late Night with David Letterman. At some point leading up to the night, Stiller thought maybe he should put together a few words, just in case. “And then at the last minute, I thought, You know, I'm not gonna prepare a speech, because I'll feel like such a jerk when I don't win.”

It’s better to burn out than fade away, but is it also better to be mistaken for Kurt Cobain? David Spade finds himself grappling with that odd, existential question this week, as images of a mural of his face accompanied by that Kurt Cobain quote (which originally came from the Neil Young song “Hey Hey, My My [Into the Black]” circulated online.

“Everyone is sending me this” tweeted the actor, late of such classics as “Tommy Boy” and “Black Sheep.” That’s all he said on the matter, leaving us all to wonder whether he’s amused, weirded out, or perhaps some combination of the two; Cobain quoted the line in his suicide note, after all, which Young found quite upsetting. The mural is painted on the side of a building in Linz, Austria, suggesting...

[Editor’s note: The below contains major casting and minor plot spoilers for all of “BoJack Horseman” Season 4.]
The general rule with the “Hollywoo” satire “BoJack Horseman” is that you can assume any famous person mentioned by name is probably playing themselves. But beyond that, the show has a knack for lining up a fearsomely talented guest voice cast beyond its already stunning ensemble to play some of its most compelling roles, and Season 4 brought in an impressive array of new and semi-returning faces.
We’ve assembled the below guide to this year’s new characters, for that moment when you say to yourself “Wait, was that…?”

Armando Iannucci is one the world’s greatest living satirists. His hilarious depictions of governmental dysfunction give a cartoonish gloss to the hectic nature of real-life leadership. The British satirist’s two rambunctious TV shows — BBC’s “The Thick of It” and HBO’s “Veep” — along with his Oscar-nominated “In the Loop,” show a consistent knack for exposing deranged bureaucracies and the power-hungry, backstabbing lunatics who think they own the place.
In Iannucci’s tilted world of feuding diplomats and narcissistic leaders, scathing one-liners meet the bitter pill of lost causes. He anticipated the modern era of political corruption and remains its greatest truth-teller, so it was only a matter of time before he applied that same uncompromising humor towards earlier periods hobbled by the same authoritarian problems.
Enter “The Death of Stalin.” Iannucci’s first adapted work culls from French writers Fabien Nury and Thierry Robin’s graphic novel (Nury has a screenwriting credit,...

Indie filmmaker Lynn Shelton is extremely prolific, but it’s been three years since her last feature film, “Laggies,” the diverting Apatow-ian look at arrested development through a female perspective (Keira Knightley starred).
So, where’s she been in all this time? Extremely busy actually, directing multiple episodes of “Master Of None,” “Maron,” “Fresh Off The Boat,” “Good Place,” “New Girl,” “The Mindy Project,” Judd Apatow’s Netflix show “Love,” “Casual,” “Glow,” and the recent Marc Maron stand-up special for Netflix.

Netflix first made a name for itself with dramas such as “House of Cards,” “Hemlock Grove” and “Orange is the New Black” (which, despite its initial insistence to the contrary, was indeed a drama). But comedy wasn’t far behind. The streaming giant first got into the comedy game in 2013 with the “Arrested Development” revival, and by 2015, premiered signature shows like “Master of None” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”
Befitting its desire to offer something for everyone, Netflix has quickly cast a wide comedy net — dark comedy, multi-camera shows shot in front of a studio audience and absurdist humor, among other variations. The best original series from the streaming giant evoke more than just a few chuckles, to be sure. They share insights into the world we all share and offer various perspectives from around the globe. They tell exciting, addictive, and yup, sometimes even alarming stories that will surprise.
