“God’s Own Country” (2017) is a powerful multicultural film set in Britain, and it was Francis Lee’s directorial debut. It focuses on Johnny (Josh O’Connor), an estranged young farmer who wanders from relationship to relationship. The entire first half is an intimate story about his own failing mental health. The only strong relations he has are with the animals. Francis Lee depicts Johnny shoving a suppository up into a cow. He has a deep emotional connection to the cow. However, a few minutes later, a man with whom he had a casual hookup tries to go out with him for drinks. Johnny refuses—after all, he has the animals to come back to. He takes out everything on the animals, but he does nothing with the humans around him.

This film is not about coming out, or about a boy coming to terms with his own sexuality. It is about the struggle that comes thereafter.

It’s true that queer representation in cinema has come a long way from what it used to be, and society has evolved enough to make way for important and timely conversations on the LGBTQ+ community. Now, if you take a look at the highest-rated queer movies of all time, you’ll come across titles like Bpm, Moonlight, God’s Own Country, Portrait of a Lady on Fire, Shiva Baby, The Half of It, The Handmaiden, Dog Day Afternoon, Love Lies Bleeding, The Power of the Dog, Carol, and more. Upon closer examination, you’ll realize that a lot of these films are very White or they are centered around stories set in first-world countries because they are either more marketable and more accessible than queer tales from the disenfranchised sections of society. This phenomenon is not only hindering the queer discourse but also preventing the queer cinema of third-world countries from progressing.

Exclusive: This year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival (Eiff) will unspool in close collaboration with Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Scottish capital’s historic performing arts event, under a new expansive partnership confirmed today by the two organizations.

As part of the deal, Edinburgh’s film programme will open in close proximity to wider Fringe events, including theatre, music, and comedy performances, using new venues across the city, including non-traditional cinema spaces in Summerhall and at the heart of the Fringe footprint.

Ridd will join in December. His first festival, the event’s 77th anniversary, will take place in August 2024, with specific dates to be announced.

The festival returned for its 76th edition earlier this year following financial difficulties. It was led by Kate Taylor, who took over from Kristy Matheson who became the new director of the BFI London Film Festival. Taylor did not apply for the position again.

The 2023 Cannes Film Festival may be slowly winding down, but a red hot new project has just landed in the market to spice things up.

Kristen Stewart (Spencer), Josh O’Connor (The Crown, God’s Own Country) and Elle Fanning (Teen Spirit, The Great) are set to lead the cast of Rosebushpruning, the next feature from Karim Aïnouz, whose Jude Law- and Alicia Vikander-starring period drama Firebrand last week had its world premiere in Cannes’ main competition to hugely positive reviews. The Match Factory and Mubi are backing the film.

HBO Max’s period drama “Spy/Master” is more John le Carré than Ian Fleming, state its creators. Following Victor Godeanu, a high-ranking officer in Romania’s secret service, advisor to president Nicolae Ceaușescu – and a spy – who decides to defect in 1978.

“As a child, I used to watch James Bond, which is a very cartoony version of espionage. It was something we really wanted to avoid. We wanted it to feel real,” says Kirsten Peters.

Adina Sădeanu adds: “John le Carré’s novels, for example ‘A Perfect Spy,’ are so complex. These characters run away from their own humanity. I have always wondered: How do they live? How do they wake up in the morning, after saying so many lies?”

Series Three dives back into the action around five years after the explosive events of the Series Two finale, beginning with Sergeant Catherine Cawood (Sarah Lancashire) discovering the remains of a gangland murder victim in a drained reservoir, a discovery which will lead her all the way back to her nemesis Tommy Lee Royce (James Norton).

Catherine still lives with her grandson Ryan (Rhys Connah) who’s now sixteen and working out what kind of relationship, if any, he wants with Royce, the man who fathered him when he raped Catherine’s daughter Becky. Needless to say, Catherine won’t take this well.

Sarah Lancashire and James Norton are set to reunite when “Happy Valley” returns to screens in January, the BBC confirmed today.

The third and supposedly final season of the show will drop in the U.K. on New Year’s Day, airing on BBC One and streaming platform iPlayer. (A U.S. release date has not yet been confirmed).

Lancashire returns as Sergeant Catherine Cawood in the six-episode season, this time navigating relationships with her teenage grandson Ryan (played by Rhys Connah) and sister Clare (Siobhan Finneran) whilst attempting to solve what appears to be a gangland murder. Norton, meanwhile, once again steps into the shoes of murderer and rapist Tommy Lee Royce.

The BBC have also released a 10-second teaser of the new season, in which Royce can be seen brooding in prison while Seargant Cawood, dressed in uniform, is on assignment, with a siren blaring behind her.

First look images have been revealed of the third and purportedly final season of crime drama “Happy Valley.”

The six-part final season, made by Lookout Point for BBC One and BBC iPlayer in co-production with AMC Networks, will see Sarah Lancashire return as Sergeant Catherine Cawood and James Norton as Tommy Lee Royce.

The first images show Lancashire sporting a bloody nose following a police raid while Royce, with a new look, is locked in his prison cell.

Billy Eichner and Nicholas Stoller's "Bros" officially opens in cinemas today, and while it's far from the first gay romcom out there, it is the first R-rated gay romcom produced and theatrically distributed by a mainstream studio. The LGBTQ+ community have their own mixed feelings about how that factoid is being used in the marketing, but when one stops to think about how many unapologetically gay ads and posters of the film are everywhere, or just how many theaters the film will be screened across the U.S. this weekend (perhaps reaching out to audiences who wouldn't normally see queer media), the achievement is nothing to scoff at.

It does raise the question, though: what is "Bros" trying to achieve as part of popular culture? For co-writer and star Billy Eichner, one of his goals for the film was to position a new kind of queer narrative in the mainstream eye.

Burke previously spent five years as a senior executive at the BFI Film Fund and 13 years at Warp Films. Her credits include Submarine, Saint Maud, Ammonite and God’s Own Country.

Public Dreams development slate includes Targets, a drama series blending comedy-horror and political drama from writer/director Amrou Al-Kadhi, for BBC Drama and it has an option on Kate Davies’ debut novel In At The Deep End.

Executive producer Mary Burke has launched production company Public Dreams Ltd, which aims to bring together the best of film and TV talent to produce distinctive, ambitious, commercial content for the British and global markets.

Burke launches the company after five years as senior executive at the BFI Film Fund and 13 years at Warp Films where she amassed more than 40 TV and film credits including “Submarine,” “Saint Maud,” “Phantom of the Open,” “Brian and Charles,” “God’s Own Country,” “Colette” and “Ammonite.” She has won a BAFTA Scotland best feature award for “For Those in Peril” and a BAFTA Cymru in the same category for “Submarine.”

In 2010, Burke was recognized by Variety as a producer to watch.
