Denzel Washington is rising in Gold Derby’s Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor for Paramount Pictures’ “Gladiator II,” according to our combined predictions. Many pundits are singling him out as the standout performance in Ridley Scott’s latest sequel, as a former slave who plots to be the emperor of Rome. Interestingly enough, the only other actor in Scott’s entire filmography to emerge victorious at the Academy Awards for one of his movies was Russell Crowe (with whom Washington worked with on Scott’s “American Gangster” in 2007) for the original epic 24 years ago. Will Washington follow in Crowe’s footsteps and secure another performance victory for the franchise?
Back in 2000 when the first “Gladiator” premiered, it smashed box office numbers, becoming the second-highest grossing movie of the year, and won five Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe. However, Crowe’s triumph was a bit...

With nine Oscar nominations and two wins, Denzel Washington's legacy as one of the finest actors in Hollywood is well-established. But even without the accolades, the man's talent speaks for itself. Often this is literally the case. Alfred Hitchcock once told Francois Truffaut, "The chief requisite for an actor is the ability to do nothing well" — something that frequent Hitch collaborator James Stewart had down to a tee. Even Stewart's quiet charisma arguably can't quite match Denzel's effortless magnetism, though. The man can make doing nothing look good like no other. But he can also do a lot when required, and has demonstrated his adaptability across one of the most impressive filmographies in Hollywood.

Denzel Washington has consistently delivered standout performances — including as a director in recent years! — across his decades-long career. He already has two Oscars to his name and could be on his way to a third Academy Award with his role in Ridley Scott‘s “Gladiator II.”
This follow-up to the 2000 Best Picture champ stars Lucius (Paul Mescal) as Lucius, the grandson of Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius. Lucius is forced into slavery but resolves to fight as a gladiator under the leadership of power broker Macrinus. And that’s where Washington comes in. The titanic Washington plays Macrinus, who is the mentor figure to Lucius and also opposes the rule of emperors Caracalla (Fred Hechinger) and Geta (Joseph Quinn).
We are predicting that Washington will be nominated for Best Supporting Actor alongside Samuel L. Jackson (“The Piano Lesson”), Clarence Maclin (“Sing Sing”), Kieran Culkin (“A Real Pain”), and Stanley Tucci (“Conclave...

“Island City,” the latest film from “Lower City” director Sérgio Machado, has been acquired for international sales by Edward Noeltner’s Beverly Hills-based Cinema Management Group. Given a current absence of Brazilian movies selected for the Cannes Festival, the acquisition gives Cmg one of the most awaited of titles coming out of Brazil this year.
It also marks latest title from Brazilian production powerhouse Gullane, whose credits include Cannes Competition players – Hector Babenco’s “Carandiru,” Marco Bellocchio’s “The Traitor” – as well as Sundance winners, such as Anna Muylaert’s “The Second Mother,” and Berlin Panorama laureates, such as Luis Bolognesi’s “The Last Forest.”
Exploring the foibles and failure of manhood, also the focus of “Lower City,” “Inner City” tells what Cmg describes as the “captivating” tale of three brothers who end up living under the same roof as middle brother Dalberto’s sensual new wife, Anaira (Sophie Charlotte...

The 2022 Oscar nominees for Best Actor are Javier Bardem (“Being the Ricardos”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”), Andrew Garfield, Will Smith (“King Richard”), and Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”). Smith (16/5) is favored to win by our odds, followed in order by Cumberbatch (19/5), Garfield (4/1), Washington (9/2), and Bardem (9/2).
All five of these men have contended here at least once before, making theirs the first Best Actor lineup since 1981 to include no first-time acting nominees. With nine acting nominations to his name, Denzel Washington ranks as one of the six most-recognized male performers in Oscars history alongside Paul Newman, Al Pacino, and Spencer Tracy and behind Jack Nicholson (12) and Laurence Olivier (10). Having been included in so many lineups, it is only natural that he has faced some opponents multiple times. As the star of “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” he is in contention for the 2022 Best Actor award against two former rivals: Andrew Garfield and Will Smith (“King Richard”). This brings his unique rematch total to five, which makes for a new male record.
All five of Washington’s rematches have been in the lead category. The first two occurred in 2002 when he triumphed for “Training Day” over past challengers Russell Crowe (“A Beautiful Mind”) and Sean Penn (“I Am Sam”). Exclusive: Dorian Missick (Shirley), Pamela Reed (Outside In), Amanda Warren and Jim Klock (The Underground Railroad) will round out the cast of Prime Video’s The Burial, which is currently in production.
They’re set to star alongside previously announced cast members including Jamie Foxx, Tommy Lee Jones, Jurnee Smollett, Mamoudou Athie and Bill Camp.
Based on the New Yorker article by Jonathan Harr, The Burial follows a charismatic personal injury lawyer famous for his impressive track record and loudly unconventional approach who decides to help a funeral home owner save his family business from a predatory corporate behemoth. In a move to bring emotional resonance to a dry contract law case, the lawyer digs up an unexpected and complex web of race, power and oppression that forces everyone to examine long-buried prejudices they didn’t know they had.
Maggie Betts is directing from a script by Doug Wright.

In 2013, four years before he announced his retirement from acting, Daniel Day-Lewis set a record with his Oscar victory for “Lincoln” by becoming the first three-time Best Actor champion. The last quartet of contenders he beat consisted of previous winner Denzel Washington (“Flight”), past nominee Joaquin Phoenix (“The Master”), and newcomers Bradley Cooper (“Silver Linings Playbook”) and Hugh Jackman (“Les Misérables”). With Day-Lewis now out of the picture, all but Jackman have emerged as hopefuls in the current Best Actor contest, creating the possibility of another three-way showdown.
According to our racetrack odds, the actor from this trio with the best shot at landing in this year’s lead lineup is Washington, who stars in Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth” and places fourth in our ranking. This would be his ninth acting nomination following supporting bids for “Cry Freedom” (1988) and “Glory” (1990) and lead ones for “Malcolm X” (1993), “The Hurricane” (2000), “Training Day” (2002), “Flight,...

Denzel Washington has two Oscars, a SAG award and over 270 other accolades. One honor he doesn’t have yet over his 40-year career is a single nomination from the BAFTA Awards. With somewhat of a home-field advantage for taking on the words of the Brits’ greatest dramatist William Shakespeare, could Washington finally receive his first nom for “The Tragedy of Macbeth”?
BAFTA is continuing to make a conscious effort to widen their net for diversity, both within its own membership and the films it honors. However, with a new voting method introduced last year following the results of their diversity review, the group threw the awards season for a loop with surprise selections. Instituting a jury into the voting process, performances such as Radha Blank (“The Forty-Year-Old Version”) and Adarsh Gourav (“The White Tiger”) managed to make the cut in favor of “safer” picks like eventual Oscar nominees Carey Mulligan...

Since the Screen Actors Guild Awards began handing out trophies for Best Film Actor in 1994, every single winner has gone on to receive an Oscar nomination. In just one instance, Benicio Del Toro in “Traffic” (2000), the SAG Awards winner went on to compete in the supporting category at the Academy Awards instead (he won that as well). According to Gold Derby’s 2022 SAG Awards predictions for Film Actor, the five nominees will be Will Smith (“King Richard”), Benedict Cumberbatch (“The Power of the Dog”), Denzel Washington (“The Tragedy of Macbeth”), Andrew Garfield and Peter Dinklage (“Cyrano”).
Smith’s performance as Richard Williams in “King Richard” comes in first place with 69/20 odds. There’s nothing tragic about Denzel Washington’s chances at the Screen Actors Guild Awards. And Leonardo DiCaprio shouldn’t hang his head either. Both men are poised to potentially earn lead actor nominations this year. Should they both receive bids, it would extend the record for the most nominations ever in the category to six, as they’re currently tied with five apiece.
Washington was last nominated in 2018 for his turn in “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” (2017). His four previous ones were for “The Hurricane” (1999), “Training Day” (2001), “Flight” (2012) and “Fences” (2016), the last of which brought him his only win in the category. But he’ll likely have a shot to add a bookend soon. Washington stars in the title role of Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” and his performance as (one of the) doomed king(s) of Shakespeare received rave reviews when the black-and-white film premiered in October.

Denzel Washington could further cement his place in the history books at the Academy Awards in March. Already a two-time acting winner for his supporting turn in the 1989 Civil War drama “Glory” and as a leading man in Antoine Fuqua’s crime thriller “Training Day” (2001), Washington is poised to nab yet another Oscar nomination this season, this time for his performance in the title role in Joel Coen’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth.” If Washington is successful, he will become just the sixth man to receive at least nine acting nominations. He would also be the first Black man to do so.

Hollywood doesn’t have an especially favorable history when it comes to supporting Black filmmakers. Representation has improved over the last decade, however, and now “Judas and the Black Messiah” could take that one step further. The Warner Bros. release tells the true story of the FBI’s assassination of Black Panther Chairman Fred Hampton (played by Daniel Kaluuya), and if it’s nominated for Best Picture it would be the first film ever nominated with exclusively Black producers.
Director and co-writer Shaka King is one of the film’s producers, along with Charles D. King and Ryan Coogler. This would be the first Oscar nomination for all three, though a couple have been in the awards conversation before. Charles D. King worked on Oscar contenders “Fences” (2016), “Roman J. Israel, Esq.” (2017), “Mudbound” (2017) and “Harriet” (2019). And Coogler directed Oscar nominees “Creed” (2015) and “Black Panther” (2018).

He soon learns much more about himself, his friends and his family.
Cat Wilkins’ high-school comedy script “Two-Faced” was fourth on the list. Taraji P. Henson will make her feature directorial debut on the Bron Studios pic, in addition to producing and starring in the movie. “Two-Faced” follows Joy, a Black high school senior whose chance of attending the college of her dreams is threatened by her wildly popular and charismatic school principal after she confronts him with evidence of his racist past.

Ten years ago, Aaron L. Gilbert was a music licensing expert in Canada with no Hollywood dreams. A decade later, Bron Studios, the company Gilbert started with his wife Brenda, has become one of the most prolific financing entities in the film business. (The company’s name is a combination of “Brenda” and “Aaron.”). In 2018, Bron signed a $100 million co-financing deal with Warner Bros., an arrangement that culminated the following year with its role in “Joker,” which grossed over $1 billion worldwide.
Now, the Vancouver-based entity is juggling a wide range of projects through a blend of studio co-financing deals and in-house productions that run the gamut from hot potential blockbusters like “Ghostbusters,” “Candyman,” and the Kevin James comedy “Fatherhood,” to the Aretha Franklin biopic “Respect” and the Black Panthers drama “Judas and the Black Messiah.”

Bron Studios, whose film credits include “Joker,” “Bombshell,” “The Way Back” and “Greyhound,” has partnered with director Kornel Mundruczo, and Alexander Rodnyansky, producer of Oscar-nominated films “Leviathan” and “Loveless,” to produce the television drama series about a woman who becomes a pioneer in the changing porn industry of the 2000s, while struggling to raise a teenage daughter.
The pilot was developed by Mundruczo and screenwriter Kata Weber, who previously collaborated on “White God,” “Jupiter’s Moon,” and the upcoming “Pieces of a Woman,” starring Shia Lebouf and Vanessa Kirby, also produced by Bron.
The first season follows a hyper-intelligent woman who, finding herself in dire straits, enters the porn industry in Budapest, Hungary as a performer, but soon sees an opportunity to evolve the way pornographic content is consumed. With a strong, five-day debut Disney and Pixar's Coco joined the ranks of the many successful films Disney has launched over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Receiving high marks from critics and audiences alike, the film finished atop the weekend box office and is looking at solid returns throughout the holiday season. Additionally, WB and DC Comics' Justice League and Lionsgate's Wonder played mostly as expected as the three films contributed to a healthy helping of receipts at the holiday box office, outperforming the Thanksgiving three-day last year by ~4% with the top twelve combining for over $180 million. With an estimated $49 million for the three-day weekend and $71.2 million for the five-day, Disney and Pixar's Coco delivered the fourth largest Thanksgiving weekend three- and five-day openings. As a result, Disney continues to own nine of the ten largest three and five-day openings over the Thanksgiving holiday with New Line's Four Christmases the...

This weekend Marvel's latest hit Thor: Ragnarok is looking to top $250 million after 17 days in release while Warner Bros. and DC Comics unveil their latest entry into the DC Extended Universe, Justice League looking to make a splash globally, though that's not all this weekend has to offer. Lionsgate will debut the highly anticipated adaptation Wonder while Sony is debuting their faith-based animated title The Star. All-in-all we should be looking at a strong weekend in which the top twelve should combine for over $200 million for the first time since early July. Looking at a #1 finish, Warner Bros. and DC Comics' Justice League will debut in 4,051 theaters with industry expectations right around $105-115 million. Given Wonder Woman debuted with $103.2 million earlier this year, Suicide Squad opened with $133.6 million last year and Batman v Superman opened with $166 million, those expectations might seem low given this is essentially DC's equivalent to Marvel's The Avengers.

Having just had a lively discussion about Best Actress and Supporting Actress possibilities, let us turn our attention to the men.
Though I'm not currently predicting any women from last year's 20 honored thespians to repeat this year, it's not uncommon for that to happen. So let's try out a Denzel Washington post-Fences prediction and see how it feels. He's headling Roman Israel, Esq. a Dan Gilroy (Nightcrawler) picture about a lawyer in crisis and conflict with his new law firm. Colin Farrell co-stars. The film was called Inner City during filmmaking but now goes by the name of Denzel's character. The film takes place in the 1970s so Denzel has a fro!
1970s are popular in cinema this year. Also working early 1970s looks this year are the stars of two true stories. Spielberg's The Papers is already causing a buzzy stir. Less discussed but also scheduled to...

Sony's legal thriller starring Denzel Washington has a title.
The project, written and directed by Dan Gilroy, who last made the acclaimed thriller Nightcrawler, is now named Roman Israel, Esq.
It was previously titled Inner City.
Roman Israel, Esq., which just wrapped principal photography, does not have a release date, but the studio is eyeing a fourth-quarter release. That would position Washington and his performance for awards consideration.

Nightcrawler writer/director, Dan Gilroy, is said to be currently pitching a new film that will see him team up yet again with Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo.
Related: Jake Gyllenhaal Talks Nightcrawler
The yet as untitled offering, which has been revealed as being very different from his first two directorial outings, has many studios circling and, it is said, will be picked up by the end of the week. No other information concerning its plot or anything else has been revealed.
Dan Gilroy’s first dalliance in the director’s chair came in 2014 when he worked alongside Gyllenhaal and Russo on the thriller Nightcrawler where Gyllenhaal plays Louis Bloom, a con man who falls into a new career as a cameraman who, armed with a camcorder and police scanner, begins nocturnal forays across the city in search of shocking and grisly crimes. When he catches the eye of a shopworn news director (Rene Russo) who welcomes the chance to raise her station’s ratings, Louis goes to increasingly greater lengths to catch the “money shot.”
Gilroy’s second outing, which is due for release in 2018, see’s him work alongside Denzel Washington, Colin Farrell and Carmen Ejogo in Inner City, a legal drama in which Washington plays a liberal lawyer named Roman J. Israel who has been fighting the good fight while others take the credit. When his partner has a heart attack, Israel suddenly takes on the role of the firm’s front man. He soon uncovers details about the crusading law firm’s history that run afoul of his values of helping the poor and dispossessed and finds himself in an existential crisis that leads to extreme action.
Check back for more news as it unfolds.

Sony and Dan Gilroy’s untitled law drama has added Hugo Armstrong opposite Denzel Washington and Colin Farrell, according to a new report from Deadline.
The picture formerly known as Inner City will be written and directed by Dan Gilroy, who recently had a hand in the screenplay for Legendary reboot Kong: Skull Island. It certainly makes for an eclectic mix of projects, and that has us all the more intrigued by Inner City Gilroy’s as-yet-untitled drama.

If you haven't seen Barry Jenkins' Best Picture-winning film Moonlight, you should absolutely check it out — not only because it's a gorgeous movie that advocates empathy in a time during which we must be empathetic as a society, but because it's already proving to be a launchpad for young talent. The Tracking Board reports that Ashton Sanders, who plays the teenaged version of Moonlight's lead character Chiron, is now in early talks to join Denzel Washington in a new movie called Inner City.
Inner City is the brainchild of Dan Gilroy, the guy who brought us the wonderful, underseen 2014 movie Nightcrawler (another film you should absolutely seek out if you haven't yet).
