Emmy Award-winner Zendaya will receive the Gotham Awards’ Spotlight Tribute at the 34th edition early next month for her performance as Tashi Donaldson in the Luca Guadagnino-directed film Challengers.

The honor was created by the indie-centric Gotham Film & Media Institute “to recognize phenomenal efforts by individuals in film and television who captivated global audiences with the biggest projects of the year,” in this case Zendaya’s remarkable work as leading-actress and producer on the Amazon MGM Studios box-office hit.

“Zendaya’s magnetic portrayal of Tashi Donaldson in Challengers exemplifies the creative excellence that The Gotham celebrates,” said Jeffrey Sharp, Executive Director of The Gotham.

“Her performances in Dune: Part One, Dune: Part Two, and Euphoria have made her one of the most captivating actors of her generation. Her multi-layered performance at the heart of Challengers earned widespread acclaim, including a nomination for Best Feature at this year’s Gothams.

“Venom: The Last Dance” delivered on its pre-release buzz in mainland China with an opening weekend that was the second biggest this year by a Hollywood movie.

While that’s far leaner than most superhero tentpoles (this year’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” and “Joker: Folie à Deux” each cost $200 million before marketing), the third “Venom” needs to continue resonating with international audiences to justify its production budget. That’s because theater owners get to keep about 50% of revenues.

The new untitled Spider-Man movie has been added to the release calendar for July 24, 2026, with Tom Holland returning as the webslinger and Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton directing.

No other movies are dated on that weekend. The fourth installment opens in the wake of a Universal event film on July 17, 2026 and prior to Paramount/Spinmaster’s Paw Patrol 3 on July 31.

There had been chatter out there that Holland was circling a new Spider-Man movie. At the time when Justin Kroll first reported on Cretton as director for the fourthquel back in September, Holland and Zendaya’s deals weren’t closed yet, but both A-listers were in touch with execs and producers about the development of the film with new contracts underway. Amy Pascal and Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige are back as producers.

Venom: The Last Dance slithered its way to $8.5 million in Thursday night previews at the domestic box office.

The movie is looking to score the lowest opening of the three film in the franchise, at least domestically. Globally is a different matter. Based on early returns, Last Dance is headed for a worldwide launch of $180 million, which is five percent higher than the worldwide debut of Venom: Let There Be Carnage ($171.6 million) in 2021.

The film has earned $35.8 million worldwide through Thursday, including $8.5 million from Thursday’s U.S./Canada early shows, which started at 2 p.m. at 3,452 locations.

The film opened in China on Wednesday to $9.4 million, making it the biggest opening day for a comic book film since 2019’s Spider-Man: Far From Home. To date, it has amassed $14.7 million from China.

The Venom franchise began with the aptly-titled Venom in 2018 and is so far the only true live-action success of Sony’s attempts to build up its own “Spider-Verse” movie series based on Spider-Man characters. It’s helped by the fact that it features one of Spidey’s most iconic foes, although the term "foe" is somewhat debatable here.

The original film focused on Eddie Brock (Tom Hardy), a disgraced investigative journalist who becomes the host of an alien creature. The monstrous creature gives Eddie unique strength and other skills as this bizarre odd couple ends up stopping another symbiote attack.

The movie was a massive hit and ended with Eddie heading to an interview with imprisoned serial killer Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson). That set up the sequel Venom: Let There Be Carnage.
