Sex Education‘s Aimee Lou Wood’s BBC romantic comedy series Film Club has built out cast.

She is penning Film Club with Ralph Davis (House of the Dragon), who is also starring in the show, and added to the cast are Suranne Jones and Nabhaan Rizwan, whose Netflix drama Kaos was recently cancelled. Adam Long and Liv Hill are also starring.

Film Club has commenced filming in Manchester and will air next year on BBC iPlayer and BBC Three and later on ZDFneo in Germany. Gaumont UK is producing, with Fremantle handling international sales. Show was first announced back in February.

Plot follows Evie (Wood), who hasn’t left her home in six months after a ‘wobble’. She runs a film club in her garage as an escape with her best friend Noa (Rizwan) and whoever else turns up.

The BBC on Tuesday unveiled casting additions for its upcoming romantic comedy-drama series Film Club, including Suranne Jones (Doctor Foster, Gentleman Jack, Vigil) and Nabhaan Rizwan (Kaos, In Camera, 1917).

The screenwriting debut from actors Aimee Lou Wood (Daddy Issues, Sex Education, White Lotus season 3) and Ralph Davis (House of the Dragon season 2, Othello) is described as a “piercingly funny and utterly heart-warming” six-part series by Gaumont for BBC iPlayer and BBC Three. Fremantle is handling global sales.

“Film Club Week 198. Evie hasn’t left the house in six months after a ‘wobble’, and Film Club is her escape,” reads a synopsis. “A weekly chance to create a world of wonder, deck the garage out in whatever the movie calls for and spend a few uninterrupted hours with Noa – her best friend and one of the few mates who still shows up.

Mumbai-based Rose Audio Visuals has struck a deal with formats rights holder All3Media International to make an Indian version of the show, which was initially for Channel 4 in the UK and was then adapted for Prime Video in the U.S. earlier this year. No streamer or network is attached at this point.

Sabrina Duguet, EVP Apac at All3Media International, said the new U.S. edition of the show, hosted by Jb Smoove, “has reinvigorated interest in this positive and dynamic series and we are confident that that Indian platforms and audiences will embrace its energy.”

Netflix has announced a new series from writer Julie Gearey (Intergalactic, Cuffs, Prisoners Wives) ‘Out of the Dust’ which is set to star Asa Butterfield and Molly Windsor.

The series is a 6-part psychological thriller set in a conservative Christian sect. The story follows Rosie, a dutiful wife and mother who is propelled into a dangerous journey of female emancipation and sexual awakening following a fateful encounter with escaped convict, Sam.

Rosie lives with her husband Adam and daughter in a cloistered Christian community. And, as the cracks begin to appear in her marriage, Sam presents as her saviour.

Jenna Coleman is Detective Ember Manning in the BBC’s newly released trailer for The Jetty.

The series, launching on BBC iPlayer and BBC One on July 15, sees the Doctor Who alum investigating a case that threatens to unravel threads of her past. After a fire tears through a property in a lakeside Lancashire town in England, Manning must work out how it connects to a podcast journalist investigating a missing persons cold case and an illicit relationship between a man in his twenties and two underage girls.

Jenna Coleman had “avoided” playing a detective – until she was approached about playing rookie cop Ember Manning in a scenic lake town in Lancashire in North West England in BBC Studios’ The Jetty from creator and writer Cat Jones and Firebird Pictures.

“What appealed to me was that the character of Ember was completely there on page one,” she tells The Hollywood Reporter. “Also, it’s a crime thriller, but it’s wrapped up in such a human, emotive, and poetic piece. It is crafted so it has all of the great things of a crime thriller – turning the page and having all of the beats. But it’s also such a feminine piece that really explores relationships and provokes. It has all sorts of blurred boundaries and is asking a lot of uncomfortable questions without fully answering them.”

As I queued up the first episode of Netflix’s “One Day,” I was reminded of the words of a great man: “I am ready to get hurt again.”

“One Day” of course shares its title and source material with David Nicholls’ 2009 novel and Lone Scherfig’s 2011 film — but in Nicole Taylor’s episodic version (executive produced by Nicholls) starring Ambika Mod and Leo Woodall, the story finds its wings, telling the story of Emma (Mod) and Dexter (Woodall) over decades with a snapshot of just one day in the year.

James Graham’s BBC drama Sherwood has added more than a dozen Season 2 cast members including David Harewood and Monica Dolan.

One of the BBC’s most-watched drama series last year moves to the present day for its second season. Power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely etc. etc., but not (yet) in Prime Video‘s excellent adaptation of Naomi Alderman’s 2016 best selling work of speculative fiction. The novel, developed with help from a mentorship with Margaret Atwood, imagines what would happen if teenage girls suddenly developed the ability to produce electrical charges through their fingers.

The series takes this premise, updates it slightly for a 2023 audience and creates a show that feels complex, nuanced, emotional, and, yes, electric. This is not a simplistic girls against boys diatribe. It’s not a diatribe at all, but a fascinating thought experiment translated into colorful, dynamic TV, with a banging sound track and an impressive ensemble cast.

BBC Three has greenlit a drama following five underprivileged Black students who win scholarships to an elite British boarding school from BAFTA-nominated Timewasters creator Daniel Lawrence Taylor and Three Girls producer Studio Lambert.

In Boarders, the students, who are all based in inner-city London, will find out what life is like in a Harry Potter-esque world as they learn about themselves, their identities and forge crushes, friendships and enemies. The BBC said the six-parter will “look at the experience of going to a top public school from a unique perspective.”

Boarders is Lawrence Taylor’s first BBC writing gig. He is best known for creating ITV2’s BAFTA-nominated Timewasters, a satirical show about time travel that he also stars in. Having also been home to the likes of Normal People and Gavin and Stacey, BBC Three could catapult him to stardom.

Tim Robbins has been tapped to replace Rainn Wilson in Amazon’s forthcoming “The Power” series after the “Office” alum had to step back from the project after production delays caused by the pandemic.

Robbins will play “the self-righteous and self-important Governor of Washington” and a “constant thorn” in the side of Leslie Mann’s character, the mayor of Seattle.

The 10-episode series is an adaptation of the novel by Naomi Alderman, taking place in a world where all teenage girls suddenly and inexplicably develop the power to electrocute people at will.

Per Amazon, “It’s hereditary, it’s inbuilt, and it can’t be taken away from them. Coming alive to the thrill of pure power: the ability to hurt or even kill by releasing electrical jolts from their fingertips, they rapidly learn they can awaken the Power in older women. BBC Film and the BFI today announce a new season of British films beginning on BBC Two on Saturday 24 October with Daniel Kokotajlo’s BAFTA-nominated ‘Apostasy.’

British Film Premiere: New Films from New Voices will present a brand new premiere every Saturday night, celebrating a new wave of British filmmakers who are offering fresh perspectives on UK life and experiences.

Each film will be available on BBC iPlayer after its transmission on BBC Two, and all will be accompanied by a short introduction from a UK film critic. Most of the films will also be available for free on BFI Player.

Sky Studios, the production arm of Comcast’s European pay-tv operator Sky, has taken a minority stake in The Lighthouse. The drama series production outfit was founded last fall by Hilary Salmon, Radford Neville and Nick Betts – three of the U.K.’s most experienced television professionals.

Salmon, former head of drama for BBC Studios, has developed and produced many hit dramas, including “Luther,” “Three Girls,” “MotherFatherSon,” “Rillington Place” and “Silent Witness.” Prior to this she was executive producer on both the BAFTA award-winning series “Criminal Justice,” and the multi-Emmy winning U.S. reversion of the show for HBO – “The Night Of.” Salmon has also co-produced other shows with HBO, including “Five Days” and “House of Saddam,” which won a Grierson Award.

Instead of clustering the action around a police station with occasional visits to a victim or suspect’s house, it inverts that ratio and plays out on the streets and inside homes. Its police are largely absent, a peripheral presence at most. We never sit in on a daily investigation briefing or glimpse an evidence board.

It can be destabilising. The deliberate avoidance of procedural elements in favour of something looser, more vital and more emotional, leaves viewers without familiar bearings. When I meet Jessie Buckley to talk about her new film, Wild Rose, she spends most of the interview excitedly leaning forward, right on the end of the sofa, almost as though she’s about to take off. Which, considering her career, seems appropriate. Directed by Tom Harper, with a script by Nicole Taylor (who wrote the BBC series Three Girls), the film wowed audiences at the Toronto international film festival. Variety called it: “A happy-sad drama of star-struck fever that lifts you up and sweeps you along”; the British Film Institute said: “Jessie Buckley was born to be a star.”

New drama series projects from the U.K.’s Studio Lambert, Italy’s Indigo Film and Norway’s Maipo Film will be pitched at Series Mania’s Co-Pro Pitching Sessions to an industry audience and jury. The latter is presided over by Meghan Lyvers, Svp co-production & development, CBS Studios International.

Taking place on March 25, the Sessions are the biggest industry draw at the three-day Series Mania Forum, which runs March 25-27.

German public broadcasting group Ard Degeto has picked up rights to two new British series ahead of next week's Drama Series Days event at Berlin's European Film Market: Cheat, a psychological thriller starring Happy Valley's Katherine Kelly and Molly Windsor (Three Girls), and Baptiste, a crime drama featuring The Missing actor Tcheky Karyo, The Night Manager's Tom Hollander and Jessica Raine (Informer).

Keely Hawes, one of the breakout stars of Bodyguard, Veep’s Sally Phillips and Three Girls’ Jill Halfpenny have joined IFC and Channel 4’s comedy series Year of the Rabbit.

The trio have joined the show, which stars Toast of London’s Matt Berry, as it goes into production on location in the UK.

Principal photography began Monday on the dramedy, based on the true story of the 1970 Miss World contest and its disruption by the newly founded Women’s Liberation Movement. The film, which will shoot in and around London over the next nine weeks, is directed by Philippa Lowthorpe (“Three Girls”) from an original script written by Rebecca Frayn (“The Lady”) with revisions by Gaby Chiappe (“Their Finest”).

The action takes place in 1970, as the Miss World competition takes place in London, hosted by Bob Hope, to be played by Kinnear. (Manville plays Dolores Hope.) At the time, Miss World was the most-watched TV show in the world, with more than 100 million viewers.

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) has announced 2018’s BAFTA Breakthrough Brits, in partnership with Burberry.

Nineteen of the UK’s most promising future stars of film, games and television have been carefully selected by this years jury members which included actress and producer Gemma Arterton (Ee Rising Star nominee in 2011), actress Stacy Martin (BAFTA Breakthrough Brit in 2014), actor George MacKay (Ee Rising Star nominee in 2014), and composer Nainita Desai (BAFTA Breakthrough Brit in 2016).

The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has revealed its newest roster of Breakthrough Brits, talent whom the organization identifies as ones to watch. Actors Jessica Barden and Paapa Essiedu and writer and director Lucy Cohen are among a 19-strong lineup that spans film, TV and gaming.

Previous Breakthrough Brits have gone on to become established stars at home and abroad, meaning that the accolade is prized by emerging talent and the list is scrutinized by the industry. Molly Windsor and Daisy May Cooper, who scooped leading actress in TV series “Three Girls” and female performance for “This Country” respectively at the 2018 BAFTA Awards, have both been Breakthrough talent. Letitia Wright (“Black Panther”) and Alex Lawther are among other recent Breakthrough Brits.

A dozen years after reaping a BAFTA bid for his short film “Cubs,” Tom Harper could be back in contention with the feature “Wild Rose,” which chronicles the life of a single mother from Glasgow who dreams of becoming a Nashville star. Jessie Buckley, who starred in Harper’s TV version of “War and Peace,” is very convincing as the title character. This Irish actress nails the Scottish accent and her is the sort of performance that the BAFTAs like to recognize – a strong leading lady performance in a small British drama.

Also in contention are two supporting actresses who add much to the movie. Oscar nominee Sophie Okonedo (“Hotel Rwanda”) plays Susannah, a wealthy woman who hires Rose as a house cleaner and befriends her, helping to realise her musical dreams. Curiously, Okonedo has never been nominated for a film BAFTA before, only for two TV BAFTAs. Perhaps that could change this year.
