One of the biggest and most financially successful horror franchises is getting a new movie! Resident Evil will return to the big screen in the near future with Barbarian writer and director Zach Cregger at the helm.
Capcom's popular video game series remains one of the most well-known in the horror genre. Since the late 1990s, the biopunk games have dominated the charts and spanned over a dozen games, novels, comic books, movies, TV shows, and other merchandise. The original live-action film series starring Milla Jovovich ran for seven films, coming to an end in 2017. The last Resident Evil movie to make it to cinemas was the 2021 reboot Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. Netflix then tackled the franchise with its own live-action series that was canceled after just one season.

Since its debut in 1996, the Resident Evil franchise has been a dominant force in the world of entertainment. It started as a video game by Capcom and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, spawning a vast array of sequels, spin-offs, comics, novels, and, of course, live-action adaptations.
A reboot of the franchise is coming soon. | Image credit: Capcom
After a little break, it looks like the franchise is taking another shot at the big screen, and this time, things are shaking up in an interesting way. Not only Zach Cregger is writing and directing the reboot, but it will also feature a fairly new player in production: PlayStation Productions.

After seven live action movies and a short-lived Netflix television series, The Hollywood Reporter informs us tonight that Constantin Film and PlayStation Productions are bringing the Resident Evil video game saga back to the big screen. Zach Cregger (Barbarian) is attached to write and direct the new movie, with several studios engaged in a bidding war for the project.
The Hollywood Reporter’s Borys Kit notes in tonight’s exclusive report, “Four studios are elbowing for the win, among them Warner Bros. and Netflix, according to sources.”
Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil is said to “take the title back to its horror roots and be more faithful to the initial games,” which has something we have certainly heard before.
The most recent installment in the film franchise, director Johannes Roberts’ Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City took a similar approach back in 2021, but ultimately failed to resonate with fans. It...

When you read about the films that could, and really should, have been made, you usually hear about Jodorowsky’s Dune, Richard Stanley’s The Island of Dr Moreau and Stanley Kubrick’s Napoleon are among the most frequently mentioned. However, one that should get just as much mention is George A. Romero’s Resident Evil.
Four years before Paul Anderson kicked off his franchise, George Romero, who certainly knew a thing or two about zombie movies, was hired to shoot a commercial for Resident Evil 2. When it was well received, plans were made to have him adapt the property as a feature film. A year later, he was fired from the project by Constantine Films.
Director Brandon Salisbury and co-writer Robbie McGregor devote just under two hours to exploring what happened, starting with his groundbreaking film Night of the Living Dead.

Video game adaptations are quite popular nowadays, but without a doubt, this trend was normalized by the Resident Evil movie series. The series kicked off with the release of 2002’s Resident Evil and ended with 2017’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. The franchise was later rebooted but unfortunately, it was not well-received by the fans.

The Resident Evil movie series is a great example of how video games are butchered when adapted into a different medium. The films were average and yet, managed to become the highest-grossing film series based on a video game at one point. The films featured some heavy hitters from Hollywood but no one was as influential as this one musician who almost joined the cast of 2004’s Resident Evil: Apocalypse.

It’s a well-known fact that the majority of video game adaptations on big screens are usually met with lackluster responses from audiences. Most of the casual theatergoers find them disappointing, and hardcore gamers feel the series didn’t live up to the original games.
Capcom’s horror video game franchise redefined movie adaptations. (Image via Capcom)
However, that wasn’t the case with the Resident Evil series. The original live-action film brought together a number of talented actors and success that led to several sequels. The entire series didn’t receive high praise from critics but would have achieved a lot more if one of the industry’s best horror directors got his hands on it.

The Umbrella Academy season 4 was the title team's final mission, where they were joined by some interesting and dangerous characters and other well-known ones. After three seasons full of twists, turns, and dark revelations, The Umbrella Academy ended with its fourth season, which sees the Hargreeves dealing with one more apocalypse, though one that gets a bit too personal. After the ending of The Umbrella Academy season 3 took the Hargreeves, Lila, and Sparrow Ben to a new timeline designed by Reginald, season 4 catches up with them after parting ways to live normal lives.
After living without powers for a while, the Hargreeves are brought back together and given their powers back to go on a rescue mission – but, much to their dismay, they need their father’s help. The Hargreeves prepare to face one more apocalypse, though one that involves Ben, thus getting too personal. The Hargreeves and Reginald meet...

Back in July, it was announced that Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) had signed on to star in the horror film Primate. Since then, Johnny Sequoyah (pictured above) of Dexter: New Blood has signed on to star in the film with Kostur – and now, as the project draws closer to production, Deadline has revealed that ten more actors have joined the cast. Here’s the line-up: Jessica Alexander (Amadeus), Victoria Wyant (My Fault: London), Benjamin Cheng (d’Illusion: The Houdini Musical), Gia Hunter (Sherlock and Daughter), Miguel Torres Umba (National Theatre co-production Kin), Kae Alexander (Ready Player One), Tienne Simon (Grime Kids), Charlie Mann (Lazarus), newcomer Amina Abdi, and Albert Magashi (National Theatre Live: Dear England).
Unfortunately, we’re not able to tell you anything about the roles these actors will be playing, because all plot and character details are currently being kept under wraps.

If read in order, the subtitles of the first six theatrically released "Resident Evil" movies almost ... almost ... spell out a "Divine Comedy"-like story arc. The first film is, naturally, merely called "Resident Evil" (2002), and it's about the release of a deadly, corporate-owned virus that turns the citizens of the world into zombies, creatures, or merely dead corpses. The film's sequel is subtitled "Apocalypse" (2004), implying that the virus escaped containment and infected the Earth. The third film is called "Extinction," implying that the virus did its job and humanity has become extinct. The arc is pretty clear.
What comes after extinction? Well, the fourth film is called "Afterlife" (2010), following the now-dead humanity into Elysium. How apropos. Sadly, the fifth film in the series is not called "Resurrection" or "Reincarnation," but "Retribution" (2012), kind of breaking the spiritual cycle. Perhaps with "Retribution," humanity has become a gaggle of vengeful ghosts? Or perhaps not.

Director Zach Cregger was announced last week as the director of Clue – but now he’s swapped that for a Resident Evil reboot.
Zach Cregger is no longer directing Clue. Instead, the Barbarian director is swapping Sony projects, moving from one movie featuring grisly deaths in a mansion to another movie featuring, well… grisly deaths in a mansion.
Just days after being announced as the director of a new Clue film, based of course on the popular murder mystery board game (known as Cluedo in these parts), Cregger has now exited the project.
Cregger isn’t leaving the Sony stable, however. Instead, he’ll be moving over to the PlayStation Productions arm of the studio to tackle a reboot of one of the studio’s most popular and enduring videogame franchises: Resident Evil.
According to The InSneider, the decision comes largely down to money. Cregger is reported to have wanted $4m to direct Clue,...

Last year, New Line Cinema went all-in on a partnership with Barbarian (watch it Here) writer/director Zach Cregger and Barbarian’s producers at BoulderLight Pictures. New Line came out the winner in a bidding war over Weapons, which they’re planning to give a theatrical release date on January 16, 2026, and they’re also paying Cregger a sum in the eight figure range to make the movie. In addition to working with them on Weapons, New Line signed a first look deal with BoulderLight Pictures, tasking the company with developing high concept genre projects for them, and they gave a greenlight to the sci-fi thriller Companion, produced by BoulderLight and Cregger. That film will be reaching theatres a full year ahead of Weapons… But while Cregger is collaborating with New Line Cinema, he’s also being courted by Sony Pictures. Industry scooper Jeff Sneider reports that Sony was hoping Cregger...

Imagine if Halle Berry told you the world just ended, and now you have to live out in the woods. Also you have to stay in Halle Berry’s house or else an evil force will get you. Also if you do leave, you have to be tied to Halle Berry’s house by a rope or else — again — the evil will get you. Also only Halle Berry can see the evil. Oh, and the protective power of Halle Berry’s house has to be recharged like a battery, and recharged with your love, so she’s going to have to repeatedly lock you in the cellar with the lights off until you give off the right vibes.

V/H/S/Beyond features segments directed by seven filmmakers with varied horror experience. The upcoming movie is the seventh installment in the found footage franchise, which kicked off in 2012. Typically, each installment features a wraparound segment featuring a character or group of characters discovering a collection of tapes that contain the anthology's short films, which are written and directed by different teams. One installment a year debuted before a hiatus between 2014 and 2021, at which point the streaming service Shudder began premiering themed installments, again at yearly intervals, with the theme of Beyond set as science fiction.
Over the years, the V/H/S franchise has featured segments helmed by quite a few up-and-coming directors including Pearl's Ti West, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire's Adam Wingard, and Loki's Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead as well as more established horror filmmakers such as The Blair Witch Project's Edardo Sanchez, Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City...

Kaya Scodelario's career showcases versatility, from horror to drama, proving her talent in various genres. Her performances in Resident Evil and Pirates of the Caribbean were notable for adding depth to her characters. Scodelario's emotional range shines in challenging roles like in Don't Make Me Go and The Truth About Emanuel.
Over the years, Kaya Scodelarios filmography has included some incredible movies, but some were better than others. At the start of last year, former DC Films boss Walter Hamada signed a first-look deal with Paramount Pictures, the idea being that he would become, as Deadline put it, “the architect of Paramount’s mainstream horror genre pod, with the mission to release several low- to mid-budget films per year across theatrical and streaming.” Now Deadline has an update on Hamada’s horror-minded efforts at Paramount, as they’re reporting that the studio has given the greenlight to the Hamada-produced horror film Primate, which has Oscar-winner Troy Kotsur attached to star.
Kotsur won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the film Coda, becoming the first deaf male actor and only the second deaf actor overall to win an Oscar. Academy Award winner Troy Kotsur (Coda) will lead the cast of the upcoming horror movie Primate, Deadline reports, with Johannes Roberts directing for Paramount Pictures.
Roberts co-wrote the screenplay with Ernest Riera, the website’s report notes.
Plot details for Primate, at this time, are unfortunately under wraps.
Walter Hamada is producing Primate, part of a new horror pact with Paramount.
Hamada, who recently left WB/DC, has a ton of horror cred from his time at New Line, producing countless horror movies including the Friday the 13th and A Nightmare on Elm Street remakes as well as The Conjuring and its various spinoffs and the 2017 adaptation of It.
Via his production company 18hz Productions, Walter Hamada is slated to produce several mid-budget horror films for Paramount Pictures per year, for both theaters and streaming.

Koshi Nakanashi, who directed 2017’s Resident Evil 7, is to take the lead on Resident Evil 9, which is now in development according to Capcom.
Japanese studio Capcom has made a huge success out of its remakes of bygone Resident Evil games, with last year’s Resident Evil 4 picking up awards and breaking sales records for its sensitive updating of the 2005 classic.
Capcom is also looking to the survival horror series’ future, however, having just confirmed that it’s currently working on Resident Evil 9 – the first proper sequel since 2021’s Resident Evil Village. Development will be headed up by Koshi Nakanashi, who previously directed 2017’s Resident Evil: Biohazard.
Shifting the series’ perspective from third- to first-person, Biohazard was widely regarded as a leaner, scarier return to form following the increasingly action-focused Resident Evil 5 and 6.

Before "Star Wars," there was "Thx 1138." A strange, dystopic science fiction movie packed with big ideas up to its eyeballs, "Thx 1138" is now mostly known as the feature directorial debut of one George Walton Lucas Jr. (though it also came back in conversation when the best episode of "Andor" paid homage to it). The future Lucasfilm founder originally created this story of repressed emotions and stymied sexuality as a student film, but by the time it was reimagined as a feature, it had gained backing from Warner Bros.
Lucas' American Zoetrope co-founder Francis Ford Coppola also had faith in the movie, and served as one of its producers. "Thx 1138" starred Robert Duvall, then already known for his work on stage and television, not to mention in films like "To Kill A Mockingbird," "M*A*S*H," and "True Grit." Future "Halloween" actor Donald Pleasence co-starred, along with a then-unknown actress named Maggie McOmie.

Once upon a time, a bunch of disgustingly wealthy entertainment executives got together with a dream — a dream that answers the question, "What if people consumed film and TV in short segments like a TikTok playlist, but on a brand new platform that no one is going to pay to use with a bananas ridiculous name?" The result was Quibi, a short-form streaming platform that went as quickly as it came, shutting down after only seven months of operation and hemorrhaging over a billion dollars from investors.
The downfall of Quibi rivals that of fellow colossal "good idea on paper but never gonna happen in execution" entertainment failure, MoviePass, but came with the depressing caveat that Quibi actually produced a huge chunk of *content* that was now at risk of being drop-kicked into the unstreamable void of tax write-off and nothingness unless other platforms stepped in to save them. This post contains spoilers for the "Resident Evil" film franchise.
Umbrella Corporation. The name will forever be associated with unsavory, downright evil acts within the "Resident Evil" universe, catalyzing the events that define the franchise. Although Capcom's "Resident Evil" games have their own set of canonical events concerning Umbrella Corp., the film adaptations that branched into their own universe also paint this multinational conglomerate in a rather infamous light. In every iteration, Umbrella is never up to any good: be it the manufacture and mass production of biological weaponry, or ushering a new race of virus-enhance monstrosities. At the end of the day, the "Resident Evil" films also fit the survival-horror mold, with a woman named Alice (Milla Jovovich) at the center of the horrors crafted by none other than Umbrella.

What are the highest grossing horror movies of all time? More specifically, what are the highest grossing horror franchises of all time? On the list of the Top 20, only Five franchises in the history of the genre have crossed the $1 billion mark. Can you guess which ones?
Franchises including The Purge, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Final Destination, The Exorcist, Insidious and Halloween are some of the biggest of all time, but even they haven’t yet been able to crack that massive billion dollar milestone. Other franchises including Paranormal Activity and Scream come even closer, but haven’t yet crossed over into the billions.

In 2002, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland teamed up to make the British horror film "28 Days Later," and the zombie genre was changed forever. Sure, we can argue whether or not those infected with the rage virus are truly zombies until we're blue in the face, but that discourse is as stale as those still fighting to prove "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie. By taking the social commentary of George A. Romero's zombie films that came before, injecting the story with the bleak stillness of a post-apocalyptic London, and incorporating zombies that move at a breakneck pace — zombies were scary again for the first time in decades.
2007's "28 Weeks Later" saw Boyle and Garland step back into a producer capacity, and although the film certainly has its defenders (myself included), fans have been frothing at the mouth for a return of the magic Boyle/Garland collaboration. Now,...

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is only the second video game movie franchise to have three movies, joining Resident Evil in achieving this milestone. Other video game movie franchises, like Tomb Raider and Mortal Kombat, have had three movies but do not share a continuous canon like Sonic and Resident Evil. The success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 at the box office may determine if the franchise continues, and other video game movie franchises like Uncharted and Super Mario have the potential to become trilogies as well.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 puts the movie franchise in an elite group, one that it only truly shares with a single property. Video games have been adapted into movies for decades, but the amount of success each has achieved has varied greatly. It may seem hard to believe, but at one stage Resident Evil was not only the highest-grossing film series based on a video game, but also the highest-grossing horror film series period. Consisting of six movies and a reboot, the Resident Evil movies just kept making money even while they were being bashed by critics. Most of those critics arguably had valid points, but the arrival of a new Resident Evil movie simply became oddly comforting somewhere along the way.
Thanks to the creative voices of Event Horizon director Paul W.S. Anderson and his Fifth Element actress wife Milla Jovovich, six of the seven Resident Evil movies feature the character of Alice (Jovovich firing on all cylinders), a former security specialist and covert operative who initially has amnesia but eventually remembers she’s out to take down the insidious Umbrella Corporation, a global company responsible for Earth’s weirdest zombie apocalypse.

"Need for Speed" tends to get unceremoniously left out of the conversation about video game movies. Released in 2014, the film debuted at the height of Aaron Paul's post-"Breaking Bad" fame. Paul stars as Tobey Marshall, a former race car driver turned working-class mechanic from New York whose friend is killed by Tobey's wealthy rival Dino Brewster (Dominic Cooper) during an illegal street race -- a crime that Tobey is wrongly arrested and convicted for. Upon his release from prison, Tobey sets out to defeat Dino in a San Francisco race. However, for reasons that are too complicated to get into here, he must do so by first driving across the country in a rare Mustang he helped restore in less than 48 hours. Also, Imogen Poots is riding shotgun with him.

In 2022, Netflix released a live-action series based on the "Resident Evil" video games, just a few months removed from the "Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness" anime series for the streamer. Not to mention, Johannes Roberts' cinematic reboot, "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City." That film came just four years after the end of Paul W.S. Anderson's mega-blockbuster film series starring Milla Jovovich, which ran concurrently with a series of unrelated animated films and many installments of the video game. This is all to say that "Resident Evil," as a property, has grown beyond just the games, and that the fandom has splintered off into a variety of directions and mediums. Trying to appease the whole of the "Resident Evil" community with an adaptation is at this point, impossible. Too many people want too many different things, and those differences are often in direct opposition to one another.

This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the movie being reviewed here wouldn't exist.
At this point, the "video game movie" classification feels just about as broad and changeable as that of a "superhero movie." Is there any point in lumping together movies like "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" or "Detective Pikachu" with "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" or "Uncharted"? (Does anyone even remember "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" or "Uncharted"?) By the same token, any lingering talk of an all-expansive "curse" associated with these adaptations increasingly comes across less like some inexplicable barrier that studios have (mostly) been unable to cross, and more to do with the idea that simply trying to translate a medium as idiosyncratic and immersive as video games into the wildly different language of film has always been self-defeating.

The Witcher season 3 will be split into two batches of episodes, with the first batch reaching the Netflix streaming service on June 29th and the rest being released on July 27th… and when both volumes have played out, we will have seen the end of Henry Cavill’s time as Geralt of Rivia.
