Micklewhite Avenue, where Alfred lives, is named after Michael Caine (whose birthname is Maurice Micklewhite), who previously played Alfred Pennyworth in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy.
Pennyworth marks the second time that the character of Alfred visits the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich, London. Michael Caine's portrayal of Alfred Pennyworth in the Dark Knight series of films, Alfred was able to give his goodbyes to Bruce Wayne in the Dark Knight Rises in the final scene. The Old Royal Naval College's Queen Mary Court's colonnade doubled for the cafe in Florence.
Emma Paetz (Martha Kane) is the only North American actress in the cast.
Pennyworth, on several occasions, is addressed as Alfie (short for Alfred). This homages Alfred Pennyworth's previous actor Michael Caine having starred in Alfie (1966).
Bill Finger, Bruno Heller, Bob Kane, and Danny Cannon were also writers for Gotham (2014).
Rob Bailey, Danny Cannon, and Bill Eagles were also directors for Gotham (2014) (Jon East, Clare Kilner, and China Moo-Young were not).
