The new sports comedy series on Netflix, Running Point, made it quite obvious from the premise that it is heavily inspired by the life of Jeanie Buss, the president of the LA Lakers, but ultimately turns out to be more of a caricature-ish spoof of her and the Buss family. The series follows a woman named Isla Gordon, who is suddenly made the president of her family-run basketball team, the Los Angeles Waves, during an already tumultuous season when the team is struggling on and off the court. Overall, Running Point is mostly just mindless comedy without any real charm and is worth a watch only if you are looking for some very light American humor.

A federal judge has rejected Pepperdine University’s bid for a court order to block Netflix from releasing parts of episodes of its upcoming series Running Point that allegedly infringe on its basketball team’s trademarks.
With the denial on Wednesday of the temporary restraining order, Netflix will continue with plans to release the sports comedy tomorrow.
The legal battle revolves around a lawsuit Pepperdine University filed against Netflix and Warner Bros. Discovery on Thursday accusing it of trademark infringement. It said that the NBA team at the center of Running Point “bears a striking resemblance in branding to Pepperdine’s longstanding and well-known Waves athletics program.”
In a statement at the time, Pepperdine University senior vp Sean Burnett said that the school “established itself as a Christian University committed to academic excellence and a world-class athletics program” but that “Netflix continues to promote Running Point, a new series that has misappropriated our trademarked name,...

Updated with outcome: After Netflix filed an opposition on Tuesday in Central California’s U.S. District Court, claiming that “Running Point has nothing to do with universities or college sports,” a judge has denied Pepperdine University’s motion for a temporary restraining order on Wednesday.
The streamer previously responded to Pepperdine’s trademark infringement lawsuit over the logo for the show’s team, The Waves, explaining that the fictional Los Angeles-based basketball team’s name is a “nod to the real-life Lakers and evokes the LA area where the team plays.”
“It would make no creative or narrative sense for the show’s creators to draw connections to Pepperdine, whose storyline is very much not about an elite, private college in Malibu,” said Netflix’s legal team in the response.
Previously, Feb. 21: Ahead of its Netflix premiere on Feb. 27, Mindy Kaling‘s new sports comedy series Running Point is already making waves.

Jennifer Aydin’s time on The Real Housewives of New Jersey is reportedly over.
The controversial cast member has been with the Bravo hit since Rhonj Season 9 and has been caught up in some of the biggest arguments.
But Ok! Magazine unveiled a stunning new report on Thursday, and it doesn’t sound like Andy Cohen, Bravo executives, or even producers are fans of the 47-year-old.
An insider told the outlet that Jennifer is “not coming back” amid her recent antics.
Jennifer was involved in a feud with Danielle Cabral on Rhonj Season 14, and after a physical altercation, both cast members were suspended from filming.
They couldn’t play nice when they got to return to the show, and they ended the season brawling across a table at Rails Steak House.
It was more Mob Wives than Real Housewives, so it makes sense that Bravo hasn’t even confirmed if the show will be back.

Midway between Paris and the Mediterranean coast, France’s Clermont-Ferrand has become the world’s preeminent hub for short-form cinema, hosting both a festival and a market with unparalleled international reach.
Now celebrating its 46th edition – which runs Jan. 31 – Feb. 8 – the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival has long been a springboard for emerging auteurs, once upon a time shining a spotlight on little-known names like Jane Campion, Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Chloé Zhao and Denis Villeneuve.
“We’re not here to ‘discover’ anyone but rather to support and highlight talent, creating opportunities for filmmakers to connect with production houses, distributors, and other festivals,” says Clermont-Ferrand programmer and coordinator Julie Rousson. “And as a short film spotlight, we really feel like we’re capturing a snapshot of the entire world in a single week.”

As expected, Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez (Netflix) landed a Best International Feature Film Oscar nomination today, one of a leading, and record-setting 13 overall for a film not in English. Other mentions for the audacious musical melodrama include Best Picture, Director, Actress and more.
With so many inclusions elsewhere, it’s possible that votes are split and Emilia Pérez does not convert to a win in the International race with folks opting to honor another deserving picture. But, if it does win, it would be the first time that a selection from France scores an Academy Award in the International category since Régis Wargnier’s Indochine in 1993.
The other titles in the International Oscar field doing crossover duty include Walter Salles’ lauded and so-called “comeback” movie, I’m Still Here from Brazil where it has done terrific box office for Sony. The movie also scored a Best Picture nomination as well...

Out of the 15 films that were named to this year’s Oscars shortlist for Best International Film, major distributors like Netflix backing “Emilia Pérez” and Sony Pictures Classics behind “I’m Still Here” have been huge contributors to the success of those films. Notably, though, one film on the list still doesn’t have U.S. distribution — the Czech Republic submission “Waves.”
With the countless factors involved in bringing a successful Oscar campaign to life — this year, the shortlist of 15 chosen from the 85 countries that submitted films — even making the shortlist, let alone getting nominated, without a theatrical distributor to get the word out beforehand is a major accomplishment.
The “Waves” campaign has been led by MediaPlanPR, an L.A.-based public relations firm specializing in international films. Their past successes include Oscar nominations for “Kon-Tiki,” “Bullhead” and “My Life As a Zucchini.”

Erin Brown Thomas is speaking from the heart with “Chasers,” an official entry in Sundance 2025‘s Episodic Pilot competition premiering at the festival in Park City, Utah later this month. Watch the trailer debut above.
Co-written by the director and lead actress Ciarra Krohne (A24’s “Waves”), this 31-minute one-shot follows a girl named Sophia through a Los Angeles house party. Evocative of a poppier “Euphoria” with a more satirical feel, at least going by the first-look, what began as a short film expanded into a series after the screenwriters fell in love with their complex characters, all navigating near-kaleidoscopic emotion.
The pilot will also screen in February as part of Slamdance 2025 — making it the rare “double dance” in a circuit that previously prevented competition in both festivals. “Chasers” aims to deliver a vibrant and self-reflective thesis from the filmmaker on the cost of paying your dues in an industry...

On Halloween of 2022, it was announced that Hannibal creator Bryan Fuller would be developing a Friday the 13th series called Crystal Lake for A24 and the Peacock streaming service… but things have turned out to be more complicated than expected. First, the lengthy writers strike slowed down the progress of the show, then Fuller got the boot and was replaced. It remains to be seen when Crystal Lake will be going into production, but since Friday the 13th has come back around on the calendar, we thought this would be a good time for us to share Everything We Know About Crystal Lake!

While accepting his Golden Globe award for Best Director for “The Brutalist,” Brady Corbet turned his attention to a recent loss that has left Hollywood in mourning.
After thanking the hundreds of people who worked on “The Brutalist,” including distributor A24 and his “fellow producers” and a “beautiful cast,” Corbet capped off his speech by honoring three people who he lost during the seven years he spent making the film, including his grandfather and his grandfather’s brother. Corbet concluded by saying “finally, tonight my heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s [Baena] family. Good night.”
Baena, a screenwriter and director known for his dark comedies “Little Hours” and “Life After Beth,” died of suicide on Friday. Plaza was Baena’s wife and starred in both “The Little Hours” and “Life After Beth.” Baena also had credits on “Spin Me Round” starring Alison Brie, “Joshy,” a dramedy starring Adam Pally and Jenny Slate,...

Through Waves, Jiří Mádl weaves a fabric from history, memory, and the human spirit’s constant desire for freedom. This film goes beyond historical retelling to grapple with its characters’ existential problems, especially the two brothers Tomá and Pavel face. It is set against the haunting backdrop of the Prague Spring in 1968.
The air is thick with both hope and impending despair as they navigate a landscape fraught with the weight of repression. This dichotomy reflects the larger battle of a country torn apart by the fervor of youth rebellion and the suffocating embrace of authoritarianism—a reflection of humanity’s eternal quest for the truth in the face of lies.
The Prague Spring, a brief period when change swept through Czechoslovakia, is an affecting backdrop. A flicker of hope was ignited by the desire for “socialism with a human face,” but the cold approach of Soviet tanks quickly put it out.

France’s “Emilia Pérez,” Germany’s “The Seed of the Sacred Fig” and Brazil’s “I’m Still Here” have been named to the shortlist in the Oscars’ Best International Feature Film category, retaining their frontrunner status in a race that had fewer high-profile contenders than usual this year.
Other films on the list are Canada’s “Universal Language,” the Czech Republic’s “Waves,” Denmark’s “The Girl With the Needle,” Iceland’s “Touch,” Ireland’s “Kneecap,” Italy’s “Vermiglio,” Latvia’s “Flow,” Norway’s “Armand,” Palestine’s “From Ground Zero,” Senegal’s “Dahomey,” Thailand’s “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies” and the United Kingdom’s “Santosh.”
“Flow” is the only animated film on the list, while “Dahomey” is the only documentary. The Palestinian selection, “From Ground Zero,” is the most unusual of the shortlisted films, consisting of 22 separate short films made over the last year by directors living in Gaza.

Before he began his career as a writer-director, Jiří Mádl was at journalism school when he first found out about the story of a group of brave Czech journalists who would later become the subject of his third feature Waves.
“As a punishment for not having proper attendance at the seminars, I got this assignment to read a historic book about Czechoslovakian Radio,” Mádl said, discussing his movie at Deadline’s Contenders Film: International showcase. “I knew that I really wanted to turn this into a screenplay and it’s stayed in my head since 2009.”
Waves, which is the Czech Republic’s official entry into the International Oscar race this year, is set during the 1968 Prague Spring and explores the dramatic events of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia from the point of view of journalists working in the International News Office of Czechoslovak Radio.

Just as the Oscar Best Picture race remains wide open as 2024 comes to an end, there’s a similar sense of excitement mounting about the breadth and range of films competing for Best International Feature Film. The submissions process found 85 of the 89 films presented eligible, but the real work starts now, in terms of whittling those down first to a shortlist of 15 and then to the final five.
Perhaps more so than in recent years, the diversity is eye-popping, ranging from action thrillers and personal dramas to intimate documentaries. The cross-section is well represented at Deadline’s Contenders Film: International showcase, which kicks off today beginning at 9 a.m. Pt.

A new energy flowed in the Czechoslovakia after Alexander Dubcek became its leader in 1968. The statesman championed reforms that expanded freedom of speech, protection of press rights and economic programs prioritizing working class people without radically disrupting the nation’s communist framework. The Soviet Union loathed the plan and sought to suppress it with force. Their military intervention, in which the government and its Warsaw Pact allies sent in troops to end that period now known as the Prague Spring.
In Waves, the Czech Republic’s submission for the 2025 Oscars, Jirí Mádl crafts a propulsive thriller about a team of journalists doggedly pursuing the truth in the months before the Prague Spring and the days of the Soviet Union’s aggressive occupation. The film is inspired by true events, which Mádl came across while researching how the International News Office of Czechoslovak Radio operated in the ’60s. At the time,...

As the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine approaches, there could be no better time to revisit the tumultuous events of 1968 in what was then Czechoslovakia. In August of that year, Russian tanks rolled into Prague – along with the armies of five countries within the Soviet bloc – to crush Czechoslovakia’s new, homegrown version of communism, dubbed by foreign media “socialism with a human face.”
Student demonstrators were murdered, the country’s new leaders deposed. Moscow’s message was clear: There would be no deviation. Until 1989, the country’s neck would stay under the Russian boot.
For those few months of 1968, however, the Prague spring air was filled with hope. Director-writer Jiří Mádl brings this time to compelling life in Waves, the Czech Oscar entry that follows the fervently committed team at Czechoslovak Radio. This hardscrabble bunch of journalists and technicians is right at the coalface of the struggle against censorship.

When “Waves” director and writer Jiří Mádl first came across the history of Czechoslovakian radio while studying journalism in college, he discovered something that didn’t add up.
“I knew what happened in ‘68 and I knew that the radio had a very important role in those days,” Mádl said. “I knew that the [Soviet] troops came and they cut off the building … But I never saw the contradiction that the radio building was cut off. So how did the [journalists] actually manage to broadcast?”
That gap on the timeline, as Mádl puts it, was the impetus for years of research through archives, books and materials about the group of journalists from the International News Office of Czechoslovak Radio. The subject of “Waves,” Czech Republic’s official entry for the 2025 Academy Awards, is the broadcast that changed the world and the journalists who risked their lives in the process.
