Whether it be actual toys or movies about them coming to life and killing people, they don’t make ’em like they used to. While the “Child’s Play” and “Puppet Master” franchises aren’t exactly rife with masterpieces, their pleasures are less guilty than those afforded by the genre’s latest installment: “Benny Loves You,” an English horror comedy liable to make audiences laugh far more than it scares them. Mostly, though, it just borders on boring. Aside from the murderous Benny himself, the film doesn’t add much to its gory genre.
The film centers on Jack, who also narrates. A 35-year-old pushover still living at home and struggling to advance in his career as a toy designer, he initially feels like an attempt to recapture the cheeky relatability of Simon Pegg’s “Shaun of the Dead” everyman. But as with his eponymous creation (the talking toy’s cheerful...

Jennifer Tilly is set to reprise her role as Tiffany Valentine for Syfy’s upcoming TV adaptation of “Chucky.”
The series, based on the horror film franchise, was ordered more than a year ago by Syfy. It will air on both Syfy and USA Network.
Don Mancini, who wrote all seven “Chucky” films (and directed three), will serve as showrunner and direct the first episode. David Kirschner, who produced all the films alongside Mancini, will executive produce alongside Nick Antosca and Harley Peyton, under Antosca’s Eat the Cat production company. UCP is set as the studio.
In the new series, a vintage Chucky doll turns up at a suburban yard sale and throws an idyllic American town into chaos as a series of horrifying murders begin to expose the town’s hypocrisies and secrets. Meanwhile, the arrival of enemies — and allies — from Chucky’s past threatens to expose the truth behind the killings,...

Jennifer Tilly, the blonde bride to iconic creepy redhead “Chucky,” is set to reprise her role in the Syfy and USA Network series based on the central figure of the “Child’s Play” film franchise. Tilly is joined by castmates Zackary Arthur, Teo Briones, Alvia Alyn, Björgvin Arnarson and Devon Sawa, who is slated to play a recurring guest star.
Per a source with knowledge of the project, the series is not actually considered a reboot but rather a continuation of the original 1988 film and its six sequels, all penned by prolific horror screenwriter Don Mancini. The series hails from Don Mancini, who directed the last three films in the “Child’s Play” saga. Mancini will also serve as showrunner and executive producer in addition to directing the first episode.
Entitled “Chucky,” the television adaptation focuses on the events following a vintage Chucky doll’s appearance at a suburban yard sale in an idyllic American town.

The Texas Alerts system sent out a strange message Friday morning – an Amber Alert for filmdom’s knife-wielding maniac Chucky the doll and his child.
The Amber Alert, typically used in the search for missing or abducted children, listed Chucky from the film Child’s Play as a suspect. The alert described him as a 28-year-old with red, auburn hair, blue eyes, stands at 3’1″, and weighs 16 pounds. He was wearing blue denim overalls with a multi-colored striped long sleeve shirt and wielding a kitchen knife prior to his “disappearance.”
The alert also listed Glen, the son of Chucky who was introduced in the film Seed of Chucky, as an abducted child. He was described as five years old, weighing 6 pounds, standing at 2’3″, and also with red, auburn hair and blue eyes. Glen was described as wearing a blue shirt and black collar prior to his “disappearance.”

Child’s Play has a lot to answer for… actually scratch that. The killer doll cliche in horror films goes back a lot further than that , in fact it goes all the way back to the 1930s with The Devil-Doll. Since then there have been a myriad of killer doll (or killer toy to be more precise) films – culminating in the late 80s renaissance and films like Child’s Play, Dolls, Puppet Master, Dolly Dearest; hell, even the Silent Night, Deadly Night franchise switched to killer toys for its fifth instalment in 1991.. The idea of dolls and toys coming to life and attacking their owners is one that still instills fear in audiences. If the films are done right that is.

Flix FlashbackIn this week's #WatchWithTNM Halloween edition, we take you back to this story about a freaky doll that is out for revenge. Anjana ShekarThe image of the doll, wearing a bright pink frock and blue pants, its thick blonde hair tied up in two ponies, would remain etched in the minds of many adults who grew up during the '80s and '90s. The creepy smile plastered to its face (not unlike the pappadam-pappadam woman we’ve seen recently) might still send a faint wave of chill down the spine for some of us even today. Some from our generation, who grew up with a healthy dose of Tamil cinema, would forever remain wary of the talking-walking battery operated dolls (this writer included). Before Annabelle from The Conjuring-verse there was the Vaa Aruil Vaa bommai for us. In this week's Watch With Tnm Halloween edition, we take...

It’s fair to say that Stephen King‘s Maximum Overdrive isn’t one of the highlights of the author’s career. The 1986 film is his only directorial effort, and is notable for its bizarre living machines and mix of comedy and horror. Despite the experience working on the movie pretty much putting King off from getting behind the camera ever again, though, his son Joe Hill has now thought up a way of making Maximum Overdrive relevant for 2020.
The original was based on King’s short story Trucks, wherein machines come to life due to what’s shown to be a passing comet in the 1980s picture. Another effort was then made to adapt the material via a 1997 television production, also called Trucks, which similarly left audiences and critics unimpressed. However, Hill thinks that the subject matter could be updated, and had this to say in an interview on...

Everyone who loves horror movies also loves Halloween, right? I mean, aside from the creepy and spooky decor that appears on store shelves across the globe, and all the fun candy that is suddenly available in the shape of brains or eyeballs or the withered hand of a zombie, there’s also the wonderful sales on horror movies, or the various stuff that starts popping up on streaming services and television. The horror that we love all year is suddenly way easier to find, way more accepted, and much more prominent. It’s fair to say, also, that the 1980s are one of the finest and greatest times for the genre, a time where countless horror classics were released, where franchises hit their pinnacles, where icons of horror were born. It’s a fantastic decade, and so I thought it might be fun, this year, to take a look at...

It’s official: Green Lantern is coming to HBO Max as a live-action television series, set to boost a growing lineup of DC Comics-adapting content on the recently-launched streaming service.
The Green Lantern greenlight, as reported by Variety, cements the previously touted television project with an order for 10 one-hour-long episodes. The project last made headlines back in January when HBO Max hyped its presence on the developmental docket during the winter TCAs. The now-confirmed order for the series—set as an ensemble following the Green Lantern Corps—comes with the reveal of Seth Grahame-Smith as showrunner and writer, joined in the latter capacity by a perennial presence in the writer’s rooms of DC shows, Marc Guggenheim, with both set as executive producers.
The series was initially spawned from a lucrative overall deal between Warner Bros. Television and Berlanti Productions, through which eponymous maestro Greg Berlanti will oversee development.

Based on the DC Comics property, the show was first announced as being in development last year. Plot details are now available for the first time, however. The show will depict the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz and Alan Scott — Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man — and many more. The series will also include fan favorites such as Sinestro and Kilowog, and will also introduce new heroes to the ranks of the Green Lantern Corps.
HBO Max has ordered 10 one-hour episodes. The series will be co-written and executive produced by Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim, with Grahame-Smith serving as showrunner. Berlanti Productions will produce in association with Warner Bros. Television, where Berlanti is under a rich overall deal.

This past weekend, filmmakers David Charbonier and Justin Powell celebrated the world premiere of their first feature, The Boy Behind the Door, which debuted online as part of the 2020 Fantastic Fest celebration (you can read my review Here). Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with both Powell and Charbonier about the project, and they discussed the inspiration behind their story for the film, their experiences collaborating with their cast on The Boy Behind the Door, and more.
I would love to hear a little bit about what the initial inspiration was behind this story, in terms of these kids and the things that they have to endure and the friendship that they share. Because obviously, their friendship is really the heart of the story, and a lot of it is hard to watch, but I think ultimately there's a sense of hope because of their connection to each other.

Happy birthday, Mr. Mark Hamill! Not many people make the kind of impact on both cinema and pop culture as Hamill has, thanks to playing both Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars saga and the Joker in various forms of Batman media. And as he turns 69 today, fans of the Star Wars and DC universes are pouring onto social media to wish the Jedi Master/the Clown Prince of Crime all the best.
To start with, the Dark Knight himself, Kevin Conroy, wished his old co-star and buddy a happy day.

As we’ve seen countless times over the years, you can’t keep a recognizable horror franchise down for too long, unless of course the rights are caught up in legal red tape, which is why we haven’t seen Jason Voorhees for over a decade at this point.
While Halloween may have reignited interest in a property that had been running on fumes for a while, the reaction to the return of another 1980s horror icon was a lot more muted. The Child’s Play remake did manage to turn a profit due to the low $10 million budget, but a worldwide box office haul of $44 million wasn’t exactly anything to write home about. The movie scored decent enough reviews, though, with Mark Hamill drawing widespread praise for yet another impeccable voice performance as murderous doll Chucky, but any talk of a sequel was always going to be dependent on commercial success.

Exclusive: Chucky is back, but even the murderous doll has been delayed by Covid-19.
Deadline understands that production on the USA Network and Syfy series has been moved to 2021 as a result of the pandemic production shutdown.
The plan was originally to film the series this fall but, due to Covid delays, this will now happen in the new year. It was set to shoot in Toronto.
The drama was always intended to air in 2021, so producers hope that it will still be delivered in time.
Earlier this month, a teaser trailer featuring the red-haired, freckled-faced doll possessed by the soul of notorious serial killer Charles Lee Ray was posted online.
Child’s Play creator Don Mancini and Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca collaborate on the series, with Mancini, who has also worked on Hannibal and Channel Zero, serving as showrunner. David Kirschner (Hocus Pocus), who produced the films in the franchise,...

We’re certainly excited about the upcoming Chucky television series, which will extend the continuity of the original Child’s Play franchise. Following a recent teaser and confirmation that Brad Dourif will be returning to voice the killer doll, producer Nick Antosca has now promised that fans of the long-running horror-comedy property will be more than satisfied with the new program.
Antosca, who was being interviewed by io9 about his work on Channel Zero, also took the time to praise the direction for Chucky, and how well it fits in with showrunner Don Mancini’s vision.
“Don wrote an awesome show. He’s showrunning it, and he had a great writer’s room. I’m cautious about talking details, but we’re working on it every day. As a Chucky fan, I’ll just say I’m over the moon that Brad Dourif is back as Chucky, as well as some other familiar characters,...

Following on from a July where they added a large number of horror titles to their catalogue, Hulu have now made available even more great outings from the genre. As with all the major streaming players, keeping subscribers happy with new content during this Covid-19 year has been crucial, especially given the new competitors that have sprung up in recent months, further splintering film rights. Hulu are usually pretty reliable in terms of diversity, though, and have added some particularly strong horror titles for August.
Among the highlights for new movies is the original 1988 Child’s Play, which introduced the murderous Chucky to the world in a film that arguably remains the high-point of the franchise. A reasonably realistic setting, a convincing child performance and some excellent effects work make Child’s Play a classic of the period and more than worth a rewatch. Child’s Play is in rude health right now. Last year’s reboot vastly exceeded expectations, was a rollercoaster of laughs and scares and featured an excellent vocal performance from Mark Hamill as Chucky. But longtime fans of ‘classic’ Chucky will soon have a lot to chew on, too, as 2021 will see the release of Chucky. The upcoming TV show is helmed by original creator Don Mancini, boasts the vocal talents of Brad Dourif and will continue the long-running saga seen in the first seven movies.

It’s the way it always is with Netflix. You get a load of new content every month, but you also lose a bunch of old favorites, too, as the rights agreements expire and they hop over to some other streaming service. September will be no different, as we’ve now got a list of everything that’s set to be removed from Netflix on the first day of the month after next.
There are a number of notable titles among them, too. First of all, the first two Bad Boys movies are leaving the site on September 1st, so make sure to give them another watch sometime in the next few weeks. Unfortunately, Netflix is losing a couple of classic horrors as well. Namely, 1988’s Child’s Play and the original Candyman, ahead of the Jordan Peele-produced remake that’s on the way.

To celebrate Shudder’s upcoming release of a documentary about LGBTQ horror film history, actors and creators of the genre got together during Comic-Con@Home to discuss why horror is queer and when they first fell in love with the genre.
“Child’s Play” franchise creator Don Mancini, “Hannibal” creator Bryan Fuller, director of the Shudder documentary Sam Wineman, “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” actor Lachlan Watson and co-host of “Attack of the Queerwolf” podcast Nay Bever joined moderator Jordan Crucchiola on Thursday’s panel titled “Horror Is Queer.”
Crucchiola started the panel with some foundation language: What defines queer horror? Wineman explained that he breaks it down into four key components: 1) explicit representation 2) queer coding, which is the implication that the character is queer, 3) whether queer folk see themselves in horror and 4) just having a queer creator.

Syfy’s recently trailer-teased Chucky television series just made a move that will likely assuage skeptical fans of the classic Child’s Play horror film franchise, the return of the murderer-possessed-doll’s definitive voice actor, Brad Dourif.
Indeed, the Child’s Play band is getting back together, with star Dourif now secured, joined by creator Don Mancini and perennial producer David Kirschner to tackle a most intriguing small screen proposition with Chucky. The series, which manifests under the NBCU umbrella via Universal Studio Group’s Universal Content Productions, will enjoy the platform of two major cable channels in corporate cousins Syfy and USA Network; an advantageous position that just improved, having secured the sinister cackle and brutal one-liners of Dourif’s voice role, which he’s thus-far fielded for seven of the franchise films.
