Richard Gadd, the man behind Netflix’s buzziest spring series Baby Reindeer, is now set to star in the upcoming series he’s co-producing for HBO. The project is a joint collaboration between HBO and the BBC, with Shining Girls’ Jamie Bell co-starring, TVLine has learned.

Baby Reindeer creator and star Richard Gadd’s next series has found its two leads — one of which is Gadd himself.

Jamie Bell will star with Gadd in Half Man (formerly Lions), which will run on HBO in the United States and the BBC in the U.K. and Ireland. The series, which Gadd is also writing and executive producing, is his first since Baby Reindeer became a Netflix breakout and multiple Emmy winner. HBO and the BBC jointly ordered the series in June.

Half Man will follow a long and complicated friendship between two men. Fresh off six Emmy wins for Netflix’s “Baby Reinder,” the limited series’ creator, executive producer, writer and star Richard Gadd is expanding his relationship with the streamer with a multi-year scripted series first-look deal.

“I’m beyond thrilled to be continuing my creative journey with Netflix. They took a chance on me when I wasn’t proven in the television space for that I will always be grateful,” Gadd said in a statement. “I look forward to the years ahead with Netflix ideas with Ted, Bela, Anne, Peter and all the amazing staff who work at the company.”

News of the expanded partnership was revealed by Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos during The Royal Television Society (Rts) London Convention.

Exclusive: Sherlock star Mark Gatiss is writing and starring in a British TV drama about a bookshop owner who helps police solve crimes.

Bookish will be a six-part series for UKTV crime drama network Alibi set in post-war London in 1946. Gatiss, the co-creator of BBC shows such as Sherlock and The League of Gentlemen and Netflix/BBC’s Dracula and actor in films including Operation Mincemeat and Mission Impossible — Dead Reckoning, is the creator.

The series will follow Gabriel Book (Gatiss), an “erudite and unconventional” sleuth who cracks mysterious cases from his antiquated bookshop, using the thousands of books that line his shelves to provide him with the knowledge that he needs. Around him are a gathering of “loveable, damaged misfits who he informally protects, cajoles and mentors.”

On BBC One, there was a peak audience of 11.3 million to watch Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz beat Serbia’s Novak Djokovic in five sets in the men’s singles finals, the highest since the U.K.’s Andy Murray won in 2016. Exclusive: StudioCanal has confirmed that it is back in the UK acquisitions game by taking a “significant” stake in a production outfit founded by The Last Kingdom producer Phil Temple.

The French production group has acquired an undisclosed holding in Birdie Pictures, which was established by former Kudos executive producer Temple in late 2022.

The internet can’t decide if it was Pablo Picasso or the Dalai Lama who said “learn the rules like a pro so you can break them as an artist”, so let’s split the difference and say it was Peter Andre. What Andre’s getting at is that rules will only take an artist so far (to ‘Mysterious Girl’) but transgression of said rules is necessary for an act of true creation (‘Insania’).

In ‘Kid/Nap’, Inside No. 9 transgresses its own golden rule. Not the one about never hiring actors Steve Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith have worked with before – that went out with Jason Watkins in series three’s ‘The Bill’ and has been snubbed several times since. Lara in this episode being played by Daisy Haggard, aka Psychoville’s Debbie, is no foul.

Instead, it’s the rule about every Inside No.

In series six, Inside No. 9 pulled off a diamond heist, explored obsessive geek fandom, framed a cuckold in an international conspiracy, let a grotesque true crime bleed from reality to fiction and back again, made a deal with the devil, and killed Jesus. Where, one might well ask, next?

Anywhere it wants, is the answer to that question. The BBC Two anthology series can float from location to location, story to story, unhampered by the need to put down roots in any one place. Series seven brings half a dozen brand new films to screen, scored by composer Christian Henson, and each one as different as the last.

YouTube executive and former Fremantle boss Cécile Frot-Coutaz has been named CEO of Sky Studios, the heavy-hitting production and development arm for Sky.

Frot-Coutaz takes the reins from current chief executive Gary Davey, who launched Sky Studios in 2019. The long-time Sky executive announced his retirement in December, and will be stepping down later this year following a transition period.

Currently head of YouTube in Emea and formerly CEO of super-indie Fremantle, Frot-Coutaz will sit on Sky’s group executive and will begin in the post in September 2021. The executive was at Fremantle for more than 20 years before stepping down in March 2018 for the YouTube role. She began at the Google-owned platform in 2019.

As CEO, Frot-Coutaz oversees the funding, development, production and commissioning teams for scripted Sky Originals, which are a major priority for the Comcast-backed pay-tv operator, which serves 24 million customers across Europe.

HBO Max will be the exclusive U.S. home for drama comedy “I Hate Suzie,” originally commissioned by the U.K.’s Sky Studios, with Bad Wolf (“His Dark Materials”) producing.

The eight-part series is co-created by Lucy Prebble, creator of “Secret Diary of a Call Girl,” and who has written an episode of “Succession,” and Billie Piper (“Eternal Beauty”). It stars Piper as a person whose life changes when she is hacked and pictures of her emerge in a compromising position. She goes through the stages of shock, denial, fear, shame, bargaining, guilt, anger and acceptance as she and her best friend and manager, played by Leila Farzad (“Innocent”), try to hold her life, career and marriage together. The cast also includes Daniel Ings (“The Crown”) and Nathaniel Martello-White (“Collateral”).

It debuted on Sky in the U.K. this summer to positive reviews.

Anil Gupta, the BAFTA-winning executive producer of the UK version of The Office, is joining Sky Studios in the newly-created role of creative director of comedy.

Gupta will focus on boosting in-house comedy production at the Comcast-owned company and will report to Jon Mountague, Sky Studios’ director of comedy.

As well as Ricky Gervais’ The Office, his credits include Goodness Gracious Me, The Kumars at No. 42 and Citizen Khan. Outside of television, Gupta co-wrote a modern-day adaptation of Molière’s Tartuffe for the RSC and co-created BBC Radio 4’s comic fantasy series ElvenQuest, starring Stephen Mangan.

Mountague said he has a “unique ability to spot and nurture talent” and an “eye for a brilliant script.” Gupta added: “I can’t wait to get working with our best writers and performers, as well as uncovering the next generation of great British comedy talent. Mostly from my spare bedroom.”

Exclusive: Cameras are rolling again on Sky’s Ancient Rome series Domina, marking the broadcaster’s largest-scale production to get back underway to date.

Cast and crew have returned to set at historic studios Cinecitta in Italian capital Rome following several weeks of pre-production work after the country’s lockdown was eased. The show is led by Kasia Smutniak (Dolittle), Liam Cunningham (Game Of Thrones) and Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet).

The production is employing a variety of virus preventative measures including distancing on set, making sure everyone completes safety training prior to accessing the site, and creating dedicated pools of crew and actors, with closed sets when possible. Sky Studios CEO Gary Davey recently said the company was also working with producers to create virus-related contingency in the event of further lockdowns.

As Deadline reported last month, Sky is edging closer to being back underway on a number of big-ticket shows.

After War Of The Worlds became the first UK drama series to go into production during the pandemic this week, industry chatter around restarts is intensifying, and Sky is said to be among those leading the charge.

Deadline has heard of at least five shows that are close to getting cameras rolling again over the coming weeks. August could see the return of Britannia, Temple, Breeders and Code 404. Other shows will start coming back online from September, including A Discovery Of Witches.

Peacock, NBCUniversal’s new streaming service, has set its opening slate of original content that will be available on its July 15 launch. It includes all first season episodes of Brave New World, The Capture, Intelligence and Lost Speedways; sports documentary In Deep with Ryan Lochte; and feature-length film Psych 2: Lassie Come Home. Additionally, Peacock Kids will feature new episodes of Curious George and two original series from DreamWorks Animation: Cleopatra in Space and Where’s Waldo?. Premiere dates for future Peacock Originals and exclusive content will be announced later this year.

A couple (Issa Rae & Kumail Nanjiani) experiences a defining moment in their relationship when they are unintentionally embroiled in a murder mystery. As their journey to clear their names takes them from one extreme – and hilarious – a circumstance to the next, they must figure out how they, and their relationship, can survive the night.

Sky has launched a first look trailer for the new original comedy ‘Code 404’ starring Stephen Graham and Daniel Mays.

The 6 episode series follows Detective Inspectors Di John Major (Mays) and Di Roy Carver (Graham) who are the top crime-fighting duo in the Unit. But when an undercover sting goes horribly wrong, Major is gunned down on the job and killed.

Full of guilt and regret about Major’s untimely death, Roy turns to the only person who understands him, John’s wife, Kelly (Maxwell Martin). However, John gets a reboot. Chosen by the police as the prototype for a new A.I. driven initiative, John is brought back from the dead – much to the surprise of Roy and Kelly. New original programming may be a part of Peacock, the new streaming service launching this summer from NBCUniversal, but it is the more familiar elements that are generating the most consumer interest so far.

That’s what an exclusive poll fielded by YouGov for Variety suggests. The poll, which was conducted among 1,445 adults aged 18 and over between January 27 and 28, found that nearly half of adults (45%) had heard of Peacock. This suggests that the marketing campaign NBCU began during the Golden Globes and NFL playoffs in January has been effective in creating awareness.

Respondents who were aware of Peacock were asked to select up to three of the features, which were first announced during the Peacock Investor Meeting on January 16, that they were interested in. The most popular of these was access to classic NBCU TV shows, with almost half selecting it as an element of interest.

Peacock will launch on April 15 for Comcast’s Xfinity X1 and Flex customers and will have a national release on July 15. An international launch date has yet to be announced.

Peacock unveiled more of its original programming slate just ahead of its investor presentation on Thursday.

First up, the NBCUniversal streamer has ordered a comedy titled “Girls5Eva” from executive producer Tina Fey, about a one-hit-wonder girl group from the 90’s that reunites to give their pop star dreams one more shot.

Peacock has also ordered multiple shows from NBCUniversal International Studios, including drama thriller “The Capture,” comedy “Lady Parts,” as well as three new comedies from Sky Studios — “Intelligence” starring David Schwimmer, “Code 404,” and “Hitmen.”

Peacock has also ordered a racing series from Dale Earnhardt Jr. and a behind-the-scenes documentary series that follows USA Basketball superstars on their journey to Tokyo, produced in partnership with the NBA.

NBCUniversal unveiled its forthcoming streaming service Peacock on Thursday, including the full slate of scripted originals set to debut on the platform.

One of the new projects announced was a scripted comedy series from Tina Fey, Robert Carlock and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” alum Meredith Scardino. Titled “Girls5Eva,” the series centers on a one-hit-wonder girl group from the ’90s who reunite to give their pop star dreams one more shot. Per Peacock’s description of the series, “They may be grown women balancing spouses, kids, jobs, debt, aging parents, and shoulder pain, but can’t they also be Girls5Eva?”

Scardino will write and executive produce alongside Fey and Eric Gurian of Little Stranger, “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” producer Robert Carlock, and Jeff Richmond and David Miner of 3 Arts Entertainment.

NBCUniversal’s streaming service Peacock goes live on April 15, and here is a list of all the programming it will offer in the first year. Subscribers will get original and acquired series and movies, sports, news and — on Peacock Premium — a nightly pre-broadcast look at NBC’s late-night shows hosted by Jimmy Fallon and Seth Meyers.

Stephen Graham is set to join Tom Hardy and Michelle Williams in Sony’s “Venom 2,” with Hardy returning as the titular anti-hero.

Andy Serkis is set to direct, and Naomie Harris and Woody Harrelson are also on board. Sony had no comment on the casting.

Written by Gaby Hull (Cheat), the six-part UK series will be produced by The Tunnel and Humans outfit Kudos and revolve around Kim Noakes (Williams), a young misfit who lives a secluded country life. When an unlikely prank goes wrong, she finds herself on the run from a murderous gangster and the police with a massive bag of stolen cash. With the survival techniques she has picked up from her upbringing, however, she might just get through. Additional cast has yet to be revealed.

Santer took the top job at the Endemol Shine owned drama production business in March 2015 following the departure of Jane Featherstone, having previously run Kudos-backed Lovely Day Productions since 2010.
