Ben Wheatley, the British indie filmmaker, somewhat rests on the periphery of the British film industry. Neither a social realist nor a James Bond action filmmaker, Wheatley seems more a forerunner of films like that from Robert Eggers. Wheatley, alongside his wife and screenwriter Amy Jump, has made a selection of diverse films, consistently inverting and manipulating genre tropes and playing with audience expectations. In some way or another, all of Wheatley’s work focus on varying oddball and sociopathic central characters who find honesty and loyalty hard to come by. While mixing scares, gore, and trippy action, Ben Wheatley deftly imbues each film with a dark comedy, underlying each situation with a satire and wit that has become a staple throughout his work.
Wheatley started his career as an internet phenomenon whereby his film, Cunning Stunt, was one of the first videos to ever go viral. After a hundred...

Thanks to breakout roles in the Scream revival, Netflix's Wednesday and this year's Beetlejuice sequel, Jenna Ortega is fast becoming one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood, so it probably won't come as much of a surprise to learn that she's being courted by Marvel Studios.
According to scooper Mttsh, Ortega is now in talks for an undisclosed Marvel Cinematic Universe role.
It's always worth noting that Marvel meets with a lot of talent, but if Ortega has actually entered negotiations for an upcoming project, there's a good chance the trades will get hold of the story before too long.
Even if she is in talks, there's no guarantee that things will work out. Ortega has a busy schedule ahead, with a lead role in Taika Waititi's Klara and the Sun adaptation, and an untitled Trey Edward Shults film that will co-star The Weeknd and Barry Keoghan.

Having carved his niche as a bonafide action star over a multi-decade career, Jason Statham needs no introduction in the entertainment industry. With blockbuster hits like The Meg and The Expendables franchise under his belt, the actor has reportedly become one of the wealthiest British talents in Hollywood.

Two years later, he was cast alongside Brad Pitt in 2000’s Snatch and since then, Statham never had to look back.

Dracula-adjacent horror The Last Voyage Of The Demeter is only just getting a cinema screening in the UK, over a year after it screened into in the US. A look at its mysterious absence from our screens:
Update: Two months after we published this feature about The Last Voyage Of The Demeter never making it to UK screens, the film is now available to watch at home! It appears that you can currently only buy the film on digital retailers, but a rent option often appears after a few weeks.
Coincidentally, Salem’s Lot is also being released in cinemas this week, so if you like vampire films, you’re having a great week, I bet.

Five years ago, it was announced that Ben Wheatley would be writing, directing, and executive producing Generation Z, a “hilarious, frightening, and political” series that would consist of six hour-long episodes that would “mix flesh-eating zombies into a story that satirizes how Brexit has divided the UK.” That project didn’t make it into production when it was originally supposed to because of the pandemic shutdown… but after making Meg 2: The Trench (you can read our review at This Link and check out our interview with the filmmaker Here), Wheatley circled back around to Generation Z. The show is now ready to start airing on Channel 4 in October, and in anticipation of the premiere, Empire has unveiled two new images. One can be seen above, and the other can be found at the bottom of this article.

Transformers One has come in below expectations, allowing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice to hold on to the top spot at the domestic box office for the third week in a row.
Analysts predicted $30 million to $40 million debut for Paramount's animated prequel, which only ended up taking in $25 million from 3,978 venues. The movie - which had a reported budget of $75 million - also made $14 million internationally, for a global total of $39 million.
Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel added $26 million from 4,172 theaters, bringing its domestic total to $225 million, and $329.7 million worldwide.
Transformers One received positive reviews (89% on Rotten Tomatoes) and strong audience scores, so the belief is that ticket sales could rebound over the next few weeks.

Jason Statham is one of the busiest actors in Hollywood right now and he's got plenty more coming down the pipe in the years ahead.
The British action star worked on four movies in 2023 alone, starring in The Meg 2: The Trench, Fast X, Operation Fortune: Ruse de Guerre, and Expend4ables. Not to mention Statham most recently appeared as the lead in the 2024 action thriller, The Beekeeper.
The actor is also a producer with his own production company, Punch Palace Productions.

Ben Wheatley is no stranger to shock and gore (try watching Kill List or In The Earth without wincing), societal satire (High-Rise), genre thrills (Free Fire), and sly humour (basically all of his films – even the bleakest ones). And his next project looks set to combine all of those facets – get ready for Generation Z, a flesh-eating horror-comedy series in which the old are quite literally eating the young. All six episodes of the Channel 4 series are written and directed by Wheatley, taking an initial horror pitch from George Faber and spinning it into a gory tale of generational divide.
For Wheatley, it’s a series set to sit alongside one of his most beloved works – the darkly funny, often shocking, definitively British caravan-dwelling killer romp Sightseers. “I was thinking a lot about my own films, because they tentatively fit together,” he tells Empire on set. “Tonally, [tt29540551 autoGeneration Z...

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is now in theaters, and we're breaking down the long-awaited sequel's batsh*t crazy final act to see if the door to the Afterlife might be left open for a third movie.
Major spoilers follow.
When her daughter Astrid (Jenna Ortega) is tricked into trading her soul to restore the ghost of murderous neighbour/love-interest Jeremy (Arthur Conti) to life, Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) reluctantly summons Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) for help. The Ghost with the Most agrees to bring Lydia to the Afterlife to rescue Astrid... if she'll sign a contract promising to be his bride.
Lydia manages to bring Astrid home, but has already agreed to marry Rory (Justin Theroux), who Betelgeuse exposes as a gold-digging cad. Still, the prospect of tying the knot with a lecherous demon isn't exactly appealing to Lydia, and Astrid manages to find a loophole which allows her mother out of the bargain.

Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, is now in theaters, and, as fans hoped it would, the movie does explain what happened to the original film's protagonists.
Though Michael Keaton's titular Ghost with the Most was obviously the main attraction in Tim Burton's horror comedy classic, the main characters were actually Adam and Barbara Maitland (played by Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis).
The recently married couple are killed in a car accident in the first few minutes of the movie, and their displaced spirits wind up summoning Betelgeuse in an effort to drive the new owners of their house (Winona Ryder's Lydia Deetz and her family) away. Things don't exactly go according to plan, however.
Ultimately, Betelgeuse is banished, and the Deetzs and Maitlands agree to share the house.
Keaton, Ryder and Catherine O'Hara (who plays Lydia's mother) reprise their roles for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, but Baldwin and Davis don't appear.

Tim Burton's long-awaited sequel to his cult classic, Beetlejuice, opens this weekend, and the movie is expected to have a ghoulishly good debut at the box office.
According to the latest estimates (via Deadline), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice should take in around $145 million worldwide (Warner Bros. is anticipating an $80M domestic bow). If this proves to be accurate, the sequel will debut with more than the lifetime gross of the original 1988 movie, which finished its run at $74.6M, unadjusted for inflation.
The chaotic horror comedy should also claim the spot from Marvel Studios' Deadpool and Wolverine, which - despite briefly being dethroned by Alien: Romulus - has remained at #1 for six weekends it's been in theaters.
Do you plan on seeing Beetlejuice Beetlejuice this weekend? You can check out our reaction to the movie below.

Back in June 2024, we learned that Fall stars Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey would be starring in an upcoming remake of the natural horror film The Breed. Well, guess who just joined the cast? Scream star Hayden Panettiere! She, along with several others, will be starring alongside Gardner and Currey in the new horror film.
Wait! We need to clear some things up about this movie first. It's not actually a remake. It was initially believed to be one, but instead, it's a sequel to The Breed. It's also been given an official title, A Breed Apart.
While it's still unclear who is writing the script for the film, filmmaking brothers Nathan and Griff Furst (Nightmare Shark) will be directing and producing via their Curmudgeon Films production company. In addition, Daro Film Distribution is signed on to co-produce and will be financing the movie as well.

Back in 2006, the late, great Wes Craven produced a killer dog movie called The Breed (watch it Here), which was directed by Nicholas Mastandrea from a screenplay by Robert Conte and Peter Martin Wortmann and starred Michelle Rodriguez, Oliver Hudson, Taryn Manning, Eric Lively, Hill Harper, Nick Boraine, and Lisa-Marie Schneider. Now a remake of The Breed is in the works, going by the title A Breed Apart, and Deadline reports that Hayden Panettiere, who worked with Craven on Scream 4, has joined the cast!
Brothers Nathan and Griff Furst are directing A Breed Apart, and are also producing it hrough their Curmudgeon Films shingle. The Fursts are no strangers to killer animal movies, as Griff’s previous directing credits include Trailer Park Shark, Ghost Shark, Swamp Shark, Lake Placid 3, Alligator Alley, and Arachnoquake. The brothers teamed up to direct the 2018 movie Nightmare Shark.

Beetlejuice is back! Oscar-nominated, singular creative visionary Tim Burton and Oscar nominee and star Michael Keaton reunite for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to Burton’s award winning Beetlejuice.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was the opening film at this year’s Venice Film Festival and the sequel had a four minute standing ovation.
“There are so few opportunities to be in something that you can say is 100% original and unique,” said Keaton, who joked about his character’s evolution.
“I think my character has matured,” Keaton said. “As suave and sensitive as he was in the first, I think he’s even more so in this one.”
The early reviews are raving about the movie.
Deadline writes: “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is not clunky. Yes, there are plenty of animation joins that haven’t been smoothed over by CGI. Some of the props look like tat Burton bought in a flea market. But it also has a proper plot,...

The first time you watch Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) brawl Yuriko Oyama aka Lady Deathstrike (Kelly Hu) in 2003's "X2: X-Men United," you may find yourself echoing what Logan says at the outset of their showdown: "Holy s**t." More than 20 years later, the fight between these two super-healing individuals with adamantium-laced skeletons still ranks up there as one of the most savage mutant versus mutant scuffles in all of 20th Century Fox's "X-Men" movies. Despite being restricted by the film's PG-13 rating, this sequence manages to packs in plenty of wince-inducing moments, culminating with Lady Deathstrike's horrifying fate of death by liquified adamantium injection. That she'd spent the whole movie being forced to serve the detestable William Stryker (Brian Cox), who uses a mind control serum to rob her of her agency, only adds to the greater tragedy of the character.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: First Clips Make It Clear That The Ghost With The Most Hasn't Changed A Bit
Tim Burton's Beetlejuice sequel arrives in theaters next month, and Warner Bros. has released the first two clips from the movie online.
The first drops us in on a family reunion between Delia Deetz (Catherine O'Hara), daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) and her kid Astrid (Jenna Ortega), who have returned to Winter River after the death of patriarch Charles (played by Jeffrey Jones in the original movie).
The next clip spotlights the Ghost with the Most himself (Michael Keaton), who is clearly still carrying a torch for Lydia - who was only 17 when they met.
This has always been one of the creepier plot points in the first movie, but anyone under the assumption that the lecherous Bio-Exorcist will be "evolving" with the times might be in for a bit of a shock.
"My whole career, there have always been people, like, 'This is too dark, which I never saw my films as dark,...

Marvel’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney) grossed $97 million on its second weekend, representing a 54 percent drop. That’s in line with other blockbuster openings and an impressive achievement. Disney now has all four of the top weekend totals this year, including the first two weekends of “Inside Out 2.” (The Pixar smash fell only 34 percent its second weekend).
That gets the third “Deadpool” (and the eighth Hugh Jackman “Wolverine”) movie to $395 million domestic and $824 million worldwide by its second weekend, the best of 2024. Whether it bests “Inside Out 2” (currently $627 million) for #1 for the year remains uncertain. “Inside Out 2” is closing in on “Barbie,” which ended up at $636 million last year, but that’s a trivia point; much more important is what these films brought to the struggling 2024 box office.

Warner Bros. has released the full trailer for Tim Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, and it reveals a lot more about the plot of the legendary's director's long-awaited sequel.
The footage begins with Jenna Ortega's sceptic Astrid Deetz - seemingly estranged from her "alleged mother" - becoming a believer after being abducted by unknown supernatural forces. With nowhere else to turn, Lydia (Winona Ryder) reluctantly summons her old "friend" Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) for help.
The batsh*t Bio-Exorcist agrees to accompany Lydia to the afterlife to rescue her daughter, but can he be trusted? We're gonna take a wild guess and say, not a chance!
The teaser also gives us another look at Willem Dafoe as Afterlife Cop Wolf Jackson, Monica Bellucci as Betelgeuse's ex-wife Delores. There's also a gross-out moment towards the end when Betelgeuse...

Updated: Animation domination continues at the global and international box office with Universal/Illumination’s Despicable Me 4 leading the pack this frame, and Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 still positively on fire after five sessions. At the same time, we’re seeing encouraging numbers for all major titles in release. And that’s a great thing; yes, there is reason to be positive.
Already this week, Inside Out 2 became Pixar’s highest grossing movie ever globally, and the Despicable Me/Minions franchise became the first animated franchise to reach $5B global. Neither of the current films in release are close to done. To wit: DM4 still has Japan, Korea and Italy on deck.
IO2, meanwhile, is going to Japan on August 1 — and that market may just help propel the Pixar sequel past Frozen 2 to become the biggest animated film of all time worldwide.

The path to being a Hollywood elite isn’t an easy one, and even more so for those who’ve had to build a name for themselves from scratch, like Jason Statham.
Jason Statham in Expend4bles | Lionsgate Films
The English actor might be considered no less than an action icon in the industry today, but it took him years of toiling away to earn the reputation he now has. That includes a few odd jobs here and there before esteemed filmmaker Guy Ritchie discovered him, and the rest is history.
Jason Statham – A Diver, Dancer, And Model Turned Action Icon
Some actors have a repertoire of eclectic characters that they’ve portrayed, and then there’s Jason Statham, who has perhaps lived a life more eventful than all his on-screen roles combined.

China’s unwitting creative phenom Yang Zhigang, known as Busifan, presents an imaginative, heartwarming and gleefully chaotic animated journey in his latest feature, “The Storm,” selected to screen in main competition at this year’s Annecy Festival.
The auteur previously worked in telecommunications and never formally studied filmmaking, yet emerged as a self-taught cult figure on China’s animation circuit via its Flash scene in 2004 with “The Black Bird,” a seven-act episodic that craftily followed a wary warrior and his avian aide.
With his brutal and defiant debut feature, 2017’s “The Guardian” (“Dahufa”), Busifan disconnected from the rules imposed by the commercial market as he sussed out his inner turmoil for the script. This solidified him as a boundary-breaking artist, and the film’s simmering success served to bolster the region’s independent movement and further out-of-the-box concepts.

Djawadi’s music for “Game of Thrones” became a sensation during the HBO fantasy series’ eight-season run, which concluded in 2019. He won two Emmys, for his music in the seventh and eighth seasons, and later conducted it with symphony orchestras and choirs during world tours in 2017, 2018 and 2019.

It’s impressive that despite the massive success of Jaws making its bite mark on pop culture back in 1975, many movies have unapologetically attempted to follow in its footsteps to this very day. One of those films is the 2017 movie 47 Meters Down, which spawned a sequel in 2019, 47 Meters Down: Uncaged. A third movie in the series is now set to swim ashore as 47 Meters Down: The Wreck will be launching its sales campaign at the Cannes Market. Johannes Roberts and screenwriter Ernest Riera return to co-write this new installment, which will be directed by veteran horror director Patrick Lussier, whose credits include My Bloody Valentine.
The plot synopsis for the third entry, per Deadline, reads,
“The story will follow a father who is determined to rebuild his relationship with his daughter as they bond during a scuba dive in beautiful tropical waters while exploring a famous shipwreck. But soon after their descent,...

Refresh for latest…: For the fourth weekend in a row, Warner Bros/Legendary Entertainment’s Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was the top studio movie at the global and international box office. While it’s true there have not been a whole lot of wide releases on a worldwide level since the start of the year, it’s heartening to see continued play for the big titles.
That also includes Universal/DreamWorks Animation’s Kung Fu Panda 4 which will cross $500M global in the coming weeks, and the worm tail of WB/Legendary’s Dune: Part Two, currently closing in on $700M worldwide. Better start to the first quarter than expected? Yes.
Taking it from the top this session: GxK grossed $21.6M in 77 overseas markets this frame, just a 42% dip in the holdovers. That puts the international cume at $313.6M and global at $485.2M.

A busy holdover weekend for wide studio releases was led by the trio of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Kung Fu Panda 4 and Dune: Part Two. And, in a soaring performance, Hayao Miyazaki’s Oscar winner The Boy and the Heron swooped into China helping the market set a new Qingming holiday record.
Meanwhile, Best Picture Oscar winner Oppenheimer, boosted by its release in Japan, has now become Christopher Nolan’s biggest movie ever at the international box office.
Before we dig into all of that, there was also fresh blood in some overseas areas with Disney/20th Century Studios’ The First Omen debuting to $9.1M from 43 markets (about 76% of the offshore landscape and notably not including France and Germany which go next weekend). This is about as expected. The global bow is $17.5M.
Latin America leans in on horror and the prequel performed best in Mexico where it opened No.

Britain’s contributions to the cinematic form have been vast and glorious. Aardman Animation. Alfred Hitchcock. Olivia Colman. 007. High up that list, too, is the British gangster movie – sure, America may often get the genre limelight with classics like Goodfellas, The Godfather trilogy, and Scarface, but nobody does dark, gritty, violent, and darkly humorous quite like the British. You certainly wouldn’t catch football-hardman-turned-movie-hardman Vinnie Jones rolling down the street with some poor geezer’s bonce trapped in his car window anywhere else, that’s for sure!
And so, with tracksuits on, geezer nicknames doled out, and knuckles dusted, Team Empire assembled a list of the very best British gangster movies ever made. From comedy classics, to bruising turn-of-the-century tales of brutality and crime, to contemporary subversions of the genre formula, we’ve covered all bases. These are films of culture, sophistication, genius. A little bit more than an 'ot dog,...
