Counterfeit stores aren't even the biggest scandal to rock China's reputation for copying. In 2011, the centuries old lakeside town of Hallstatt, Austria known for its picturesque buildings and historic churches made headlines. The Austrian town is a UNESCO World Heritage site. But, that's not why it made headlines. A Chinese mining tycoon initiated a project to clone the entire Austrian town and build a copy of it it in the southern Chinese province of Guangdong, completely unbeknownst to the townspeople. Architects visited the town and took pictures of every detail. The $940 million clone opened officially in 2012 amidst controversy from the original town of Hallstatt.
