Bectu Launches Biggest Ever Survey

British broadcasting union Bectu is launching what it is calling its largest ever survey of those working behind the scenes in TV and film. The union is asking workers across the UK’s creative industries about their experiences and views on key issues facing the sector, including pay, employment practices, mental health and wellbeing and finances. The move comes with the freelance workforce in a perilous position, with thousands exiting the sector as they struggle for work and grapple with low pay and poor conditions. Masterpiece on PBS has released the first trailer for Miss Austen, ahead of its May 4 premiere.

“I am not ready to let my beloved sister, Cassie, go,” begins the trailer for the television adaptation of Gill Hornby’s bestselling novel, starring Keeley Hawes and Rose Leslie.

Set in 1830, Miss Austen takes a literary mystery — Cassandra Austen (Hawes) notoriously burning her famous sister Jane’s letters — and reimagines it as a heart-breaking story of sisterly love.

“There is no greater comfort in this world than a sister,” concludes the trailer.

The television adaptation hails from BAFTA-winning writer, Andrea Gibb (Elizabeth is Missing).

Cast also includes Synnøve Karlsen (Last Night in Soho), Patsy Ferran (Living), Max Irons (The Wife), Alfred Enoch (How to Get Away with Murder), Calam Lynch (Bridgerton) and Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey).

The Running Man will now release in theaters on November 7, 2025 after shifting from its original November 21 date.

King’s novel, published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, was released in 1982, loosely adapted into the same-titled Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring film in 1987. The story follows “Ben Richards, a desperate man who participates in violent reality show called The Running Man in order to win enough money to revive his gravely ill daughter. A24 has officially acquired the U.S. distribution rights to Victorian Psycho, an upcoming psychological thriller. Adapted from Virginia Feito's novel of the same name, the film is poised to follow an eccentric governess who arrives at a remote Gothic manor, where strange occurrences lead to suspicion. The Substance star Margaret Qualley is set to lead the Victorian Psycho cast, with Last Night in Soho's Thomasin McKenzie joining the roster in November 2024.

According to Deadline, A24 has won the bidding war to acquire the domestic rights to Victorian Psycho. The publication also reports that filming on the period psychological thriller is slated for a March 2025 start, while no release date has been set for the film as of the time of writing. The movie's international rights are being held by production company Anton, who are also fully financing Victorian Psycho.

Time travel movies are a thrilling part of the sci-fi genre, but some of these films completely rewrite the rules and tropes when it comes to telling a unique story. Sci-fi is a broad genre of film that lends itself to innovation and creativity. Because of the variety of stories that fit within this setting, with all of time and space being an option, and a vast variety of creative options around technology, characters, plots and much more, these movies can be almost anything.

However, even within the sub-genre of time travel movies, there are several films that completely ignore previously established tropes, rules, and commonalities. While many time travel movies will deliver a clear set of rules about how their time travel works, or meddling in the past will alter the present and future, or there could be paradoxes created by interacting with past versions of oneself, these elements don't always apply.

A new Netflix movie that's based on a true story has just debuted on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics are being very positive. Though Netflix offers plenty of originals in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, more grounded shows and movies based on true stories have also historically been popular at the streamer. These sometimes take the form of true-crime shows, such as the popular Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, but they have also been more straightforward dramas.

The Founder, for example, starring Michael Keaton, was well-received in 2017, with its story of how McDonald's became one of the biggest restaurant chains in the world. 2023 was a particularly strong year for the based-on-a-true-story movie at Netflix, with Nyad, Bradley Cooper's Maestro, and Rustin all earning positive reviews and awards recognition. Another 2024 Netflix movie based on true events now seems poised to join this respectable club.

The Shaun of the Dead star is dead serious as his character, a crazed cabbie, takes two unsuspecting passengers on a nightmarish ride. The hellish route in Bruce Goodison’s movie starts off straightforwardly, however, an eerie element soon closes in on the cast and alters the course.

Things are clearly not good between Anne and Patrick (George Bukhari), and the tension between the couple becomes less and less underlying as the movie progresses. And once Frost enters the picture, that relationship drama briefly takes a backseat to the more pressing problem at hand. Matt Smith may currently be well-known for his portrayal of Daemon Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, but viewers will forever see him as synonymous with his portrayal of the Doctor on Doctor Who.

Smith portrayed the Eleventh Doctor for three seasons, making just shy of 50 episodes. Alongside David Tennant, his seasons are widely regarded as the golden age of the 'New Who' era of the franchise. Fans are always campaigning for his triumphant return, although Smith himself isn't too interested in reprising his beloved role just yet.

Of course, Smith would go on to grow his illustrious filmography. Notably, he played the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, in Netflix's The Crown. Other big roles include Last Night in Soho and a Marvel debut in Morbius. However, outside of Doctor Who, his biggest role by far is playing Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon.

A twist ending can make or break a movie, and they tend to generate a lot of conversation. While the best movie twists can change the complexion of a story in a single moment, they aren't easy to pull off. For every Fight Club and Planet of the Apes, there are dozens of movies which miss the mark. A bad plot twist can feel like a cheap gimmick that shatters the suspension of disbelief and insults the audience's intelligence.

Between the legendary and the ludicrous, there are many controversial plot twists which still inspire debate. These twists have as many fans as detractors. Since a movie's ending can often affect how people appreciate the entire story, these divisive twist endings are big sticking points in the discourse surrounding a certain movie. Those who love the twist will generally love the movie, while others might feel as though the twist ruins everything.

Edgar Wright and Michael Cera will be reuniting fourteen years after Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World to reimagine Stephen King's The Running Man for the big screen. The Cornetto Trilogy and Last Night In Soho director's next feature will explore a dystopian world where criminals are inducted into a television show where they are hunted down for entertainment. Wright's The Running Man will star Glen Powell, Katy O'Brian, Josh Broken, and Lee Pace.

With The Running Man set for release in 2025, another pair of casting additions have been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter. Locke & Key star Emilia Jones has been cast in an undisclosed role, and Cera will also star in the feature. While Cera did reprise his role in the Wright-produced Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime in 2023, it is the first time the pair have worked directly with one another since the 2010 adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel series.

We’re somehow already in the fourth quarter of 2024, but the good news is that we’re getting a new Nick Frost horror movie every month as we wrap up this year. The action horror comedy Krazy House, which JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray hated when he caught a screening at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, was given a VOD release on October 4th. The serial killer thriller Get Away will be getting a theatrical release on December 6th. And slotting in between those two is the supernatural horror movie Black Cab, which is coming our way from Shudder, Sony Pictures Television, and Stolen Pictures, and will be released through the Shudder streaming service on November 8th. The Running Man has cast a prominent Dune and Marvel Cinematic Universe star to portray its lead villain, starring opposite Glen Powell in the remake of Stephen King's novel. Originally written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, the dystopian novel was loosely adapted into a movie of the same name starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987.
