Bectu Launches Biggest Ever Survey
British broadcasting union Bectu is launching what it is calling its largest ever survey of those working behind the scenes in TV and film. The union is asking workers across the UK’s creative industries about their experiences and views on key issues facing the sector, including pay, employment practices, mental health and wellbeing and finances. The move comes with the freelance workforce in a perilous position, with thousands exiting the sector as they struggle for work and grapple with low pay and poor conditions. Bectu has repeatedly stressed that this is worsening as time goes on. “Creative industry workers are critical to our economy and to our social and cultural fabric,” said Bectu head Philippa Childs. “But data on creative workers is lacking. The freelance nature of the creative industries means that freelancers often fall through data gaps on employment statistics, while without formal employment structures,...

Margaret Qualley has worked with the likes of Shane Black (The Nice Guys), Quentin Tarantino (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things and Kinds of Kindness), and Ethan Cohen (Drive-Away Dolls), and she had a prominent role in Coralie Fargeat’s Oscar-nominated body horror film The Substance. She has more interesting collaborations ahead, as she has worked with Richard Linklater on the Lorenz Hart biopic Blue Moon (where she stars alongside Ethan Hawke), re-teamed with Ethan Cohen for Honey Don’t!, where she co-stars with Chris Evans, Aubrey Plaza, Charlie Day, Billy Eichner, and Talia Ryder (Qualley plays a private investigator looking into a cult led by Evans), and will be working with Sanctuary director Zachary Wigon again on the psychological horror thriller Victorian Psycho. The Wigon film will be heading into production soon, and during an interview with IndieWire, Qualley confirmed that she’s working on her British accent.

The 2020s are only halfway over, but there have already been some great crime movies for fans of the genre to enjoy. The 2020s have offered a mix of comedies, period dramas and murder mysteries that all take the crime genre to new and interesting places. The genre has always had plenty of variety, so it's exciting to see how it's evolving in the 2020s. Hopefully, the 2020s can continue this trend.
So far in the 2020s, many directors who are popular for their previous crime movies have returned to the genre, like Martin Scorsese, Steven Soderbergh and David Fincher. There has also been room for some exciting new talents to emerge, like how Emerald Fennell burst onto the scene with Promising Young Woman. Another interesting trend is that female directors are emerging to lead the genre.

Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Last Night in Soho) is directing a new take on Stephen King’s The Running Man, and the adaptation has found its game show host in actor Colman Domingo per Deadline.
The Running Man will now release in theaters on November 7, 2025 after shifting from its original November 21 date.
King’s novel, published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, was released in 1982, loosely adapted into the same-titled Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring film in 1987. The story follows “Ben Richards, a desperate man who participates in violent reality show called The Running Man in order to win enough money to revive his gravely ill daughter. The show follows Richards being chased by numerous hunters sent to kill him.”
Glen Powell leads the film. Karl Glusman (Watcher), Katy O’Brian (Love Lies Bleeding) and Daniel Ezra (“A Discovery of Witches”) also star. Furthermore, Josh Brolin was cast to play the central...

If you’ve ever found yourself knee-deep in a conversation about dystopian thrillers, there’s a good chance The Running Man has popped up at least once. Remember that 1987 classic starring Arnold Schwarzenegger? The man who practically defines ‘action hero’ took on crazy villains like Fireball, Dynamo, and Subzero in a blood-pumping race for survival.
Well, the original was a blast, no doubt, but let’s be real—it was more about the spectacle than the substance. That said, the new adaptation is going to be a whole different beast. Starring Glen Powell, The Running Man is getting the overhaul it deserves, ready to elevate the story to an entirely new level.

Edgar Wright's directing return will arrive sooner, as his adaptation of Stephen King's The Running Man has been moved up the 2025 theatrical calendar. Previously adapted into the 1987 action thriller starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the movie explored a dystopian future where incarcerated prisoners are forced to fight and evade a team of deadly hunters in a twisted reality television show. Wright's The Running Man stars Glen Powell, Katy O'Brian, Josh Broken, Lee Pace, Michael Cera, and William H. Macy.
While The Running Man marks Wright's long-awaited return since 2021's Last Night in Soho, Deadline is reporting that the release date for the remake is moving up in Paramount's schedule. After previously holding a November 21 release date, the action thriller has been moved up to release on November 7. This places the movie two weeks earlier than previously slated. Anya Taylor-Joy had a big 2024 working with acclaimed directors, between her surprise cameo in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, and her starring role in George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga. The actor indeed snagged the role of Imperator Furiosa in Miller’s newest action epic thanks to the recommendation of another big-name director, Edgar Wright, who cast her in his dreamy 2021 horror film Last Night in Soho.
Oscar-nominated director David O’Russell also dialed Taylor-Joy’s number, casting her in his 2022 all-star period film Amsterdam, as did M. Night Shyamalan, who put the actor in his Unbreakable sequels Split and Glass. But the first major filmmaker to recognize Taylor-Joy’s talents was Robert Eggers, whose 2015 psychological-horror movie The Witch proved to be the actor’s breakthrough. Taylor-Joy returned to the wild world of Eggers for 2022’s brutal revenge film The Northman.

Austin Butler may or may not be the new American Psycho, but while we wait to find out what’s going on with that situation, it is a sure thing that Butler’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood co-star Margaret Qualley is set to star in the psychological horror thriller Victorian Psycho, where she will be playing the title character. Today, Deadline has broken the news that A24 has acquired the domestic distribution rights to Victorian Psycho, which is scheduled to begin filming in March.
Zachary Wigon (The Heart Machine) will be directing the film from a screenplay written by author Virginia Feito (Mrs. March), based on her upcoming novel of the same name. This will be the second collaboration between Wigon and Qualley, as she also starred in his film Sanctuary.

Matt Smith goes full bad boy in the first look at Sky’s six-part series “The Death of Bunny Munro,” based on Nick Cave’s cult novel.
In the debut image released from the series, Smith — who is playing the title character — sports only his underwear as he gets ready to light up in a laundromat. By Smith’s side is newcomer Rafael Mathé as Bunny Munro’s son, Bunny Junior.
Described as a “wild cautionary tale” and “tender portrait of a father and son,” “The Death of Bunny Munro” takes place after Bunny’s wife, Libby, dies by suicide. According to its official synopsis: “Sex-addicted door-to-door beauty product salesman and self-professed lothario Bunny Munro finds himself saddled with a young son and only a loose concept of parenting. Together with 9-year-old Bunny Junior he embarks on an epic and increasingly out-of-control road trip across Southern England as the two...

Anya Taylor-Joy sets her latest television project five years after her Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning role in The Queen's Gambit. Tayor-Joy made her screen debut in the television show Endeavour in 2014, and a year later, she shot to prominence with a starring role in Robert Eggers' folk horror movie The Witch. She further cemented her status as one of Hollywood's most interesting up-and-comers with roles in movies like Split, Last Night in Soho, and The Northman, as well as joining the all-star cast of The Menu.
As her career has evolved, Taylor-Joy's movie roles diversified, with appearances in the comedy-thriller Amsterdam, the hit animated adventure The Super Mario Bros. Anya Taylor-Joy is about to get Lucky — so is Apple TV+, for that matter.
The Apple streaming service has acquired the rights to “Lucky,” a new limited series that will star Taylor-Joy and be executive produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine banner.
“Lucky” is based on a New York Times-bestselling novel — and an entry in Reese’s Book Club — by Marissa Stapley. It tells the story of a young woman who left behind the life of crime she was raised in years ago, but must now embrace her darker, criminal side one final time in a desperate attempt to escape her past. So that’s Taylor-Joy’s mission.
Jonathan Tropper, who was behind “See” for Apple Studios, and Cassie Pappas, who works on Apple’s “Silo,” are co-showrunning “Lucky,” with Tropper writing and executive producing. Witherspoon will also executive produce alongside Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, and Taylor-Joy will...

Time travel movies are a thrilling part of the sci-fi genre, but some of these films completely rewrite the rules and tropes when it comes to telling a unique story. Sci-fi is a broad genre of film that lends itself to innovation and creativity. Because of the variety of stories that fit within this setting, with all of time and space being an option, and a vast variety of creative options around technology, characters, plots and much more, these movies can be almost anything.
However, even within the sub-genre of time travel movies, there are several films that completely ignore previously established tropes, rules, and commonalities. While many time travel movies will deliver a clear set of rules about how their time travel works, or meddling in the past will alter the present and future, or there could be paradoxes created by interacting with past versions of oneself, these elements don't always apply.

A new Netflix movie that's based on a true story has just debuted on Rotten Tomatoes, and critics are being very positive. Though Netflix offers plenty of originals in the sci-fi and fantasy genres, more grounded shows and movies based on true stories have also historically been popular at the streamer. These sometimes take the form of true-crime shows, such as the popular Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, but they have also been more straightforward dramas.
The Founder, for example, starring Michael Keaton, was well-received in 2017, with its story of how McDonald's became one of the biggest restaurant chains in the world. 2023 was a particularly strong year for the based-on-a-true-story movie at Netflix, with Nyad, Bradley Cooper's Maestro, and Rustin all earning positive reviews and awards recognition. Another 2024 Netflix movie based on true events now seems poised to join this respectable club.

James and Oliver Phelps may not be sporting the trademark red Weasley hair, but the twins are still instantly recognizable to fans of the “Harry Potter” franchise having played cheeky brothers Fred and George for almost a quarter of their lives. Now, a decade on, they’re back at Leavesden Studios just outside London, where the movies were shot, for a new competition show, “Harry Potter: Wizards of Baking,” which launches today on The Food Network, HBO and Max (it will be available from December on Prime Video in the U.K.).
The Phelps twins host the show, which sees them reunite with former castmembers including Warwick Davis and Bonnie Wright, who return to the franchise as guest judges alongside foodies Carla Hall and Jozef Youssef, as they decide which bakers go through to the next round and which must apparate home.

Foundation, Apple TV+'s adaptation of the Isaac Asimov novel series, first aired in 2021, with two seasons currently complete and a third on the way. The first season of Foundation received mixed-to-positive reviews, with praise going to the set design and acting of both Jared Harris, as protagonist Hari Seldon, and Lee Pace as the villain Brother Day, one of a series of genetic clones that rules the Galactic Empire. Season 1 picked up two Primetime Emmy nominations and won two Visual Effects Society Awards and that led to a second season, which premiered in 2023.
The books that the series is based on took the form of a trilogy, published from 1951 to 1953, which was followed by two more books in 1982 and 1986, and prequel novels written in 1988 and 1993. The road from comedy to horror is a short one for Black Cab lead Nick Frost, yet unlike past roles, this new one isn’t played for laughs. The Shaun of the Dead star is dead serious as his character, a crazed cabbie, takes two unsuspecting passengers on a nightmarish ride. The hellish route in Bruce Goodison’s movie starts off straightforwardly, however, an eerie element soon closes in on the cast and alters the course.
Things are clearly not good between Anne and Patrick (George Bukhari), and the tension between the couple becomes less and less underlying as the movie progresses. And once Frost enters the picture, that relationship drama briefly takes a backseat to the more pressing problem at hand. After a bad night out, Anne and Patrick hail the cab that carries them off to a creepy and possibly haunted English road.

Matt Smith may currently be well-known for his portrayal of Daemon Targaryen in HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon, but viewers will forever see him as synonymous with his portrayal of the Doctor on Doctor Who.
Smith portrayed the Eleventh Doctor for three seasons, making just shy of 50 episodes. Alongside David Tennant, his seasons are widely regarded as the golden age of the 'New Who' era of the franchise. Fans are always campaigning for his triumphant return, although Smith himself isn't too interested in reprising his beloved role just yet.
Of course, Smith would go on to grow his illustrious filmography. Notably, he played the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Philip, in Netflix's The Crown. Other big roles include Last Night in Soho and a Marvel debut in Morbius. However, outside of Doctor Who, his biggest role by far is playing Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon.

A twist ending can make or break a movie, and they tend to generate a lot of conversation. While the best movie twists can change the complexion of a story in a single moment, they aren't easy to pull off. For every Fight Club and Planet of the Apes, there are dozens of movies which miss the mark. A bad plot twist can feel like a cheap gimmick that shatters the suspension of disbelief and insults the audience's intelligence.
Between the legendary and the ludicrous, there are many controversial plot twists which still inspire debate. These twists have as many fans as detractors. Since a movie's ending can often affect how people appreciate the entire story, these divisive twist endings are big sticking points in the discourse surrounding a certain movie. Those who love the twist will generally love the movie, while others might feel as though the twist ruins everything.

In a blend of nostalgic horror and time-twisting thrills, Time Cut—featuring Outer Banks star Madelaine Petsch and Cobra Kai’s Griffin Gluck—captures audiences with its unique spin on the classic slasher genre. Directed by Matt Smukler, this film echoes the gripping suspense of time travel, as it merges horror with a mind-bending narrative. Rooted in the classic ‘80s horror tradition yet reimagined with fresh, inventive elements, Time Cut has found a special place in this year’s releases. If you, like me, were either intrigued or disappointed with Time Cut on Netflix, you can seek out the following movies that feel like they belong with the Netflix original.

In a year full of terrific (and terrifying) horror movies, "Heretic" stands out from the crowd. Driven by captivating dialogue and a simmering sense of dread that eventually boils over into outright terror, the writing and directing duo of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods have done the impossible: They've made an A24 horror movie that captures the studio's trademark sense of unease while also delivering a proper crowdpleaser. It's the kind of movie that feels carefully built to appeal to horror fans ranging from arthouse to casual, all without sacrificing character, atmosphere, and yes, scares. As I wrote in my review from Fantastic Fest, this is simply an extremely good time at the movies.
And delivering extremely good times at the movies is what Beck and Woods do best. After writing "A Quiet Place," they directed two of the most underrated genre films of the past few years with "Haunt...

Edgar Wright and Michael Cera will be reuniting fourteen years after Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World to reimagine Stephen King's The Running Man for the big screen. The Cornetto Trilogy and Last Night In Soho director's next feature will explore a dystopian world where criminals are inducted into a television show where they are hunted down for entertainment. Wright's The Running Man will star Glen Powell, Katy O'Brian, Josh Broken, and Lee Pace.
With The Running Man set for release in 2025, another pair of casting additions have been revealed by The Hollywood Reporter. Locke & Key star Emilia Jones has been cast in an undisclosed role, and Cera will also star in the feature. While Cera did reprise his role in the Wright-produced Scott Pilgrim Takes Off anime in 2023, it is the first time the pair have worked directly with one another since the 2010 adaptation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's graphic novel series.

We’re somehow already in the fourth quarter of 2024, but the good news is that we’re getting a new Nick Frost horror movie every month as we wrap up this year. The action horror comedy Krazy House, which JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray hated when he caught a screening at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, was given a VOD release on October 4th. The serial killer thriller Get Away will be getting a theatrical release on December 6th. And slotting in between those two is the supernatural horror movie Black Cab, which is coming our way from Shudder, Sony Pictures Television, and Stolen Pictures, and will be released through the Shudder streaming service on November 8th. Our friends at Bloody Disgusting got the first look at the trailer, which is now embedded above.

The Running Man has cast a prominent Dune and Marvel Cinematic Universe star to portray its lead villain, starring opposite Glen Powell in the remake of Stephen King's novel. Originally written under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, the dystopian novel was loosely adapted into a movie of the same name starring Arnold Schwarzenegger in 1987. A remake of The Running Man directed by Edgar Wright is currently in development, with Powell of Top Gun: Maverick fame set to portray Ben Richards.
Now, Deadline has confirmed Josh Brolin, best known for his roles as Thanos in the MCU and Gurney Halleck in the Dune movies, will be portraying the villain of The Running Man. Details about his role are sparse, although it's reported he'll be portraying the mastermind behind the deadly reality show Powell's Ben will be participating in. Exclusive: Thomasin McKenzie says that because of her youthful appearance — she’s 24 — it has been “a bit of a struggle” to play her own age or older, but those worries are banished with her latest role. In the wonderful movie Joy, she delivers a remarkable portrait of Jean Purdy, one of the founding pioneers of human in vitro fertilization therapy, commonly known as IVF.
If gynecologist Dr. Patrick Steptoe and physiologist Robert Edwards are regarded as the “fathers” of IVF, then Purdy, a nurse and embryologist, is its godmother.
It’s a spot-on perfect part for the New Zealander who starred in Jojo Rabbit, Last Night in Soho and The Power of the Dog, and she shines brilliantly as Purdy alongside Bill Nighy as Steptoe and James Norton as Edwards, who later was knighted for his services to medical research.

It’s spooky-season which means it’s time for chilly weather, falling leaves and, of course, horror movies. We’re celebrating the genre by honoring those that make it so special with a countdown of the greatest scream queens working today.
7. Anya Taylor-Joy Robert Eggers hates his debut film The Witch starring Anya Taylor-Joy
Anya Taylor-Joy took over the high-octane, adrenaline-fueled world of Mad Max with this year’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but its her work in the terrifying world of horror that gets her on this list. Starting with Robert Eggers The Witch, the talented young actress went on to showcase her skillset in the genre through a wide range of films while working with some of the most talented filmmakers in the business. Split, Last Night in Soho and The Menu are prime examples of what makes Anya Taylor-Joy a true scream queen.

Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Last Night in Soho) is directing a new take on Stephen King’s The Running Man, and Paramount has announced the release date this afternoon.
The Running Man will release in theaters on November 21, 2025.
Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick, Twisters) will star. THR reports this afternoon that the actor will be joined by Love Lies Bleeding star Katy O’Brian.
Edgar Wright is directing the brand new movie adaptation of Stephen King’s novel and he will also produce along with his producing partner Nira Park and Simon Kinberg.
King’s novel, published under the pseudonym Richard Bachman, was released in 1982, loosely adapted into the same-titled Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring film in 1987. In the film, “In a dystopian America, a falsely convicted policeman gets his shot at freedom when he must forcibly participate in a TV game show where convicts must battle killers for their freedom.

It's impossible to avoid spoilers all the time, but I am so pleased I was able to experience all of these films without the twist being spoiled. I adore twisty films that subvert expectations, but the downside is that many of these movies have their twists spoiled by enthusiastic fans. On top of this, when a movie with a twist really makes waves and stands out, it continues to be discussed for years to the point that the endings become common knowledge.

Matt Smith has a face made for film and TV, one that the camera can't help but focus in on, which has ensured fans have gotten a good look at the actor's mug, and many have noticed that Smith's eyebrows have thinned to the point they're almost not even there. Smith has had a meteoric rise to stardom, beginning in the 2010s. First, he became known to a select, but fervent, group of fans when he took on the role of the Eleventh Doctor, one of the more likable variants in the Doctor Who franchise.
As popular as he was in Doctor Who, it was his performance in the first two seasons of The Crown, as Prince Philip, that showcased just how talented of an actor he is. Films like Last Night in Soho and Morbius paved the way for what is currently his crowning achievement, Daemon Targaryen in House of the Dragon.

Some of my favorite TV show stars have not appeared in as many movies as I would like, largely due to the stratified filming schedules of the roles they are best known for. Some Hollywood movie actors have successfully switched to TV, and vice versa. However, the two modes of storytelling are drastically different and require different things from the actors, who need to be adept at conveying the character in limited screen time or drawing out an arc over possibly many years of TV.
Some great movie actors have never done TV when movies allow them to more easily sample a variety of genres and generally result in bigger cultural events. However, with epic fantasy and other genres blowing up in movies and TV in the past decade, there is more acknowledgment than ever of how the incredible talents of TV actors could transform movies.
