I can't decide if this was made by morons or made for morons? Perhaps both.
The dialogue is atrocious, possibly the worst writing I've ever heard. There's early 90s video game intros that are better scripted.
The direction and camera work is frankly embarrassing, cuts in the wrong place, bizarre camera angles, random close ups to random wide shot to random close up. The effect is actually physically nauseating.
The sound work is as bad as I've ever heard, the vocals are exceptionally prominent giving the effect of 1970s dubbed Hong Kong karate movies. The entire film is permeated with an intrusive constant atmosphere track.
The acting defies description. This doesn't even rise to giddy heights of hammy. However the direction, editing and script are so abysmal that I doubt there's an actor alive or dead that could have rescued it. Indeed the direction and editing is so amateurish and badly done that there may very well be a legal argument for the actors to sue.
Quite possible the worst thing I've ever seen.

This is one of those films that seems to have fallen through the licensing cracks in the streaming age. Frankly it's bizarre that such a very good film doesn't pop up more often on television or streaming services. It's honestly superior in terms of writing and storytelling, and certainly more memorable, than anything released in cinema in 2024.
The film has an A-list cast; Fraser, Silverstone, Walken, Spacek, all perform wonderfully in a funny, sweet and generally family friendly story, although some parents of younger children may wish to exercise caution due to a couple of sex references and some occasional mild swearing (personally I find nothing of concern but some parents are more cautious). The storytelling is sharp, the pacing perfect, there are genuinely laugh out loud moments and it has the perfect amount of schmaltz.
A very fine film.

I finally relented and watched this telling of the story behind the 2 greatest individual acts of genocide in the history of the world. I wasn't going to watch it for the same reason I don't seek out Mexican cartel murder videos, jihadist beheading videos or drone footage of men murdering one another at a remove in Ukraine.
Thankfully this was not the self congratulatory propaganda piece that it could easily have been. That said I'm not entirely sure what it is, other than ambiguous and indecisive. Is this deliberate? Was Nolan cowed by the disagreeable world in which we currently live? Could he have been anything other than ambiguous and indecisive and not have been crucified by whichever side of the political spectrum he offended?
This was a 3 hour tightrope act desperate to not cause offense when the subject matter is the most offensive act in human history.
Regardless, the acting is superb across the board, the cinematography superb, the storytelling superb. However, it lacks an opinion, it lacks courage and it does it's level best to hide it.
However, certainly 30 years ago, perhaps even 10 years ago, this film would not have been ambiguous, it would have been self congratulating and certain of itself so I suppose this is a step in the right direction, perhaps in another 30-40 years people will be able to make movies that acknowledge this act for what it was.
