The movie is outstanding, it will take your heart away. I know why people are hating it so much
Firstly, Most of the Indian viewers first watch movies like Judwaa 2, Dabangg 3, then the same people ask why films like Swadesh, Jagga Jasoos etc flopped. Basu's movies are the victims of this, Basu's movies are not so easy to understand, his films hide some messages that you understand after thinking a lot. That is why his films flopped because Indian viewers want item numbers as well as Oscars.
Second reason, Most of the Indian viewers love naked actresses dancing, liquor, cars, unrealistic cliche stories, some unrealistic happy ideal families with full of values, mockery of eunuchs on the big screen but if someone says anything about superstition (which pk, omg showed) about God, then they have problems. The movie did not say that God doesn't exist.
He said that your actions will decide the end of your life. We don't know whether there is hell and heaven or not, but we should always do our deeds, leave the consequences to God. The movie said that God is there, but don't do business in his name because your actions are the ultimate judge, who'll decide if you're made for heaven or hell.
One star less because some scenes were confusing.

People couldn't understand this movie, it wasn't made on "Mission Mars" because this movie is a dramatic genre movie, not biographical. If you people to know about Mission Mars, then there are documentaries made for you documentary films are meant for showing a fixed topic that's why they're filmed precisely. But when a dramatic movie is made, every kind of audience is taken care of. I don't know who are the great people who think it was an insult to scientists. The only advice for you people is that you don't know the difference between drama and documentary. They has only used a real mission to make the film's story, like Titanic and Kedarnath Filam used a real event. The film was based on "Do what you like". Padman's character was inspired by the real Padman, that was just a character inspiration (like 3 idiot's Rancho) the real message of the film was "menstrual period". Even the title song says "Dil mein Mars hai" which means that they are doing this project because of the love and passion for science, eagerness to know and not to get money or to become famous. This mission was done from the heart. That's why, when Chandrayaan 2 failed, a scientist was crying, how would the tears have come if he had done it for money or fame.
This film increases the respect of scientists and doesn't decrease, because in this film it is shown that they are scientists today because they love the work and not the income. In a scene, it is shown that Vidya Balan tells new scientists "Happy Birthday to the scientist inside you" and they all start thinking that "Yes! There are so many people, they all have the same mind but only why I am a scientist" and the reason that was shown was excellent, they showed that they are scientists because it is their passion and love for science (like Sonakshi was getting inspired by Kalpana Chawla) not that someone coerced with them "If you study science, you will get good income". I agree that the dance song was a bit too much, but that scene was perfectly fine. Because you are looking at the job of a scientist according to yourself, but once you see it from the eyes of scientists, you find science is easy for them, You're just looking at the work load and pressure that's why you found it strange to sing and dance. But their love is science, everyone studies to become a scientist, but thier passion is science, so that job is easy and enjoyable for them. Dancing and singing were shown so that people understood that they love their jobs, today they are following thier passion and were not showing that the scientist works by dancing and singing. Kalam sir also became a scientist because he loved science and not the income he would get. Many jobs seem difficult from outside, but once you look at the job from the eye of the one who is doing that you will find it will be easy for them, they will be happy because that job is their passion and not yours. The film also breaks down some stereotypes like Akshay Kumar is shown to be very of angry natured but when it comes to his job, no one can work more peacefully & disciplined than him. We often judge girls according to thier clothes and behavior, like if she wears modern dresse she might be characterless or don't know any sanskar but the in film Sonakshi plays the character of a girl who changes her ways over time and is also in a job like a scientist. We often say that working women can't be a good homemaker vice versa, but Vidya Balan plays the role of a woman who is an excellent mother, an excellent wife and also excellent at her job she balances her professional and personal life and so on. The characters are breaking the myths that a genius, topper etc are of always serious nature. The characters were simply outstanding someone is angry person, someone is caring, someone is fun loving, someone is kind etc. So the main motive of the film was follow what you love, they just used the real mission for their story like Titanic, Kedarnath, Bombay. Even 3 idiots and Chhichore are also based on engineering those wasn't real stories but stories inspired by real incidents in engineering life same goes for Pink, Padman, Hindi Medium, Talvaar, Gangajal and Mission Mangal etc
2 negative stars to show "Follow your passion, do what you love " a beautiful message with so much exaggeration.

The effect of loneliness, love, friendship & marriage etc. on a person is well depicted on the screen.
The film has shown Bengali culture very beautifully, the style of wearing the saree, how women used to do thier makeover, old houses, the rituals, the lifestyle of the people etc.
All the actors performed their work well (be it the side or the main.)
There are no superfluous songs in between, the direction is very good, the whole team has done wonders.
Talking about not giving two stars, the first reason is that the pace of the story is very slow & little things were predictable.
I can't understand one thing, why people are criticising that it wasn't horror. Horror means to be absolutely scared, frightened. But these people have probably forgotten it by watching Bollywood movies. Now people think that horror means ghost. The film is of horror genre. This doesn't mean that ghosts will come & the candles will be extinguished or will be blown off the back of its hair. Anything that can be scary is not necessarily a ghost.
