Extraction (2020)
Sorry, I am not impressed.
My only question to the film makers is, 'What was the reason behind making this story based in Dhaka or even Bangladesh?' India could have just been fine. I would have given it 10/10. But as a Bangladeshi native, I cannot but express my dissatisfaction about the way film makers gave less attention to the use of Bengali language in the film. Even the setting which was supposed to be Dhaka was not at all in Dhaka. There is no forest around Buriganga river that runs through Dhaka. The mistake was sticking like a sore thumb. The women, the people, the sign boards, the accents of Bangla slang were all wrong. It could have been an excellent work if they could do it properly. They were using Calcutta tongue not Dhakaia language.
This is was so disappointing.
All the 7 star is for my favorite actor Chris Hemsworth. I could have been proud for this movie as it was staged in Bangladesh. Only if it were a reality - they could have done it Gazipur district with lots of forest to play firepower. Or in Khulna by Sundarbans.
There is no way a car chase can be staged in Dhaka. LOL. There is no 'WAY' literally.
Sicario: Day of the Soldado (2018)
Feeling ambivalent after watching the whopping 2 hour long movie.
The movie is fun with all that shooting. But the problem is the movie digressed so many times from what it actually wanted to prove that I am having an ambivalence emotion right now.
First of, there could be another episode of this movie.
Now, I did not understand what the point was for the terror attack on the US soil. Arab blowing things up on US soil has become a very common thing in the US movies. I mean it gives such an unpalatable message that I have a very hard time digesting. Military action film always takes a wild turn to the Middle East as if there is no good people there. As a result mass paranoia is engulfing natural sense of logic. Just painting a group of people as Arabs/Muslims has become good business for the film producers. They are feeding on the hysteria of the audience- a common fear that Arabs/Muslims are bad. I only wish people would start reading unbiased history of the world- starting from the Colonial periods.
The second thing is the movie had a very great potential. Instead, the story teller wanted to put it through a metamorphosis and the end result was amorphous. To begin a turf war why would you need to retell a narrative where Arabs/Somalians had no function at all? Just to paint Arabs/Somalians/Muslims in another coat of black paint?
The movie had a few good dialogues there. It really looked good and I thought yes! this could bring out the bad side of politics. Might bring out a few members of the clandestine society who choose what to do with the Humans of the world, who love to play GOD so much. But no, nothing of that sort at all.
Then there was this one boy who had no introduction, just a few scenes, and WOW! the movie ends with him as if HE is the next BIG shot!!? What happened to the little girl?? What happened to the people who told the soldiers to turn against one of their own?
So many unanswered questions.
It is like a first person shooter game gone bad.
Baaghi (2016)
Monkey can Jump too!!!!
Straight words: Monkeys can jump too, but they won't make a movie!!! Tiger Shroff's agility is commendable but just doing the same thing as Tony Jaa, is a bit too redundant and he was not as sharp as Tony. The movie was such a copy, it will put a photocopier in utter disgrace!!!
Fights had same old round house kicks and some, it seemed, figure skating moves, specially bouncing off of the wall was like the figure skating queen doing a jump in the air.
The story was a garbage. It was as if the producer got a man who can do a lot of kicks and so he thought why not throw in some paragraphs from here and there and voila!! There is this Baaghi movie!!! Tasteless!!! I won't recommend wasting 2 hours on this pile of cow dung. Just see a few trailers and you will enjoy what Shroff has to offer. No need to waste time.
King Lear (2008)
An Old man comes to his sense and brings me to tears
If you want to understand the nature of human beings, or want to make a list what kind of humans there are, watch King Lear.
Human folly, betrayal, misunderstanding, treachery, infidelity, kindness, faithfulness, bravery, and so on.
Of the episodes, the scene where King Lear meets his daughter Cordelia and comes to senses brings me to tears when he says He is old and foolish. That performance! If not watched I think a person will miss something in her/his life.
I think Shakespeare had put everything he had in writing this play. This is the most engaging and deeply moving play after the Greek Oedepus plays.
I sincerely pray for the people who took such pain portraying characters of this drama.
Easy A (2010)
Modern Day Scarlet Letter A
I have only a few words for this movie.
It is very realistic yet funny. The rumors and gossips can destroy one's life. These should never be practiced. Lies will always hurt people in so many ways.
The protagonist is unbelievably beautiful. I do not know why she was saying those words in the beginning of the movie that no one notices her! I think the director should have cast a little less beautiful person in this character. It is impossible not to notice her. The moment I saw her in this movie, after so many years I was telling myself that Oh why this girl is so beautiful!!!! Really! the protagonist should have been played by someone else of lesser beauty.
And the half naked male characters should think of personal hygiene a bit more.
But overall story is very strong. It translates the modern day ostracism and the life of a woman who is victimized by it. The society is so damn unforgiving when it comes to girls and boys like this. It is unbelievable. It shows how teenage people are abusing technology and destroying social life of someone even without understanding it. If western world is infected with this virus called gossip at such an epidemic level then the society really is doomed. There is no helping it. The movie is the best remedy and eye opener for anyone who loves gossiping.
Happy New Year (2014)
Stealing Diamonds have become a Trend!
Oh! My Goodness!
What else can I say! It was first Aamir Khan's D(!)oom 3, then Rhitik's Bang Bang, and now KK's Happy New Year.
These films give us reviewers some busy typing time in our pretty somewhat dull life.
I do not know what to say to this movie. From when has it become a trend to Steal diamonds in movie themes? Oh! I forgot, Doom 3 and then Salman khan's Kick have the same Bank Robbery theme.
Same old things being routinely played one after another and making it boring. I would say if the makers are out of ideas and if they are gonna steal stories from Ocean's franchise then they should go to Japanese Manga writers and buy some good stories and build on it. Look what Tom Cruise did in 'Edge of Tomorrow'. It was adapted from a Japanese light novel. I think if they are gonna cut, copy and paste crappy old stories together at such an epic level then they should not hesitate to buy a good manga story for adaptation.
Please, Farah Khan, spare us and do not use your crappy movies to waste our time. Do a better job next time.
No one should ever watch this film in one's life. This film has absolutely nothing to offer.
Lucy (2014)
An accident; a mysterious blue drug; and a girl becomes a transcendental existence.
This movie is not for everyone to properly understand. To existentialists, it would seem like another useless waste of time seeing kid's fantasy movie, but to the people who understand mysticism, transcendentalism, and Sufism, it will be a good eye opener.
The cinema is very short, but the impact of the theory is too heavy. Mysticism and transcendentalism, these two are explored. I know Islamic mysticism does not really bother anyone but if you really are into mysterious things and meeting with The Maker one day, I would say you should read into it. Books of Islamic Mysticists like Gazzali R. on mysticism will give you a proper knowledge of what Sufism or mysticism is.
Anyway, the movie shows you that you can transcend and go beyond the limit of human knowledge if you can unlock the full power of you brain which was given to you at the beginning of your being. Being able to harness the power of your own brain will give you access to the domain of a Superior Existence that we often times talk of. I am not saying that humans can really perform all these but if that Superior Being gives you that power then you can do a lot of things. If you are a Jew then the story of Moses A., if you are a Christian then the Stories of Jesus A., and if you are a Muslim then there is no further explanation necessary to you as you already know through religious scriptures the existence of such domain and possibilities.
What happened in the end is that when Lucy was eventually given the power to unlock the full potential of her brain, she seemed have met her beginning.
The story is short, it has nice East and West combination; and the actors performed very well. Some of the visual elements of the movie were bit redundant and seemed old fashioned. But it is a good movie to watch.
This movie is not like the other blockbusters and it should not really be rated on the same scale as the subject matter is totally different. Those who understand mysticism and Sufism would really enjoy the movie.
