Blood (2022)
Deserves a 7 rating
Very underrated film. Tense, well paced, holds no punches. Thr characters felt really relatable in a un relatable circumstance
"Blood" is a gripping and intense film that explores themes of violence, trauma, and redemption. The movie's atmospheric tension and visceral action sequences are balanced by a thought-provoking narrative that lingers long after the credits roll. The cast delivers strong performances, bringing depth and complexity to their characters. While not for the faint of heart, "Blood" is a well-crafted and unsettling cinematic experience that will appeal to fans of dark and suspenseful storytelling.
My Rating: 4.5/5 stars.
Anything for Jackson (2020)
So bad is good
I don't know how in the world this movie got a 6.3 rating. It is comically bad from the acting, to the script to the story
From the beginning, the story is weak and you don't really care for the protagonist or antagonists. The whole Satanist angle is played enough that it raises the bar for any film that broaches the subject, and this movie wayyy misses it
The two main actors are poorly played and there's no real arc to their character development. You don't really believe that they can pull such a stunt, and that's where the whole movie falls apart.
Please watch something else. Happy Halloween.
Dave Chappelle: The Closer (2021)
More philosophical and profound social commentary than comedy
I've been a fan of DC since killing me softly. This special, while not his funniest, is perhaps his most impactful, emotional, honestly raw stand up special. The Daphne story was heartbreakingly beautiful on many levels.
StartUp (2016)
Underrated hidden gem
Like many, I missed this show when it came out on crackle, only wanted to see it when it came out on Netflix. Here's my take :
Pros: strong acting with edge of your seat plot that keeps you guessing. It's a fresh spin on an old story. The twists and turns reminds a bit Ozark and got, not at the same cinematic heights, but startup makes a great a attempt with likely a smaller budget. Plus, as someone In the startup world, I found the storyline appealing and not as far fetch as other shows.
Cons : set in Miami, but clearly shot in Puerto Rico, I cringed in some scenes where it was way too obvious.
Highly recommended.
Fatale (2020)
Much better than the 5 rating
Hillary swanky and Michael ealy deliver a gutsy performance in this twisty thriller. The movie aint gonna win an Oscar but it delivers in thrills, twists, suspense and it's gotta pretty dope score / soundtrack to complement it.
Simon Killer (2012)
Slow burn. Overrated
This is a very slowly delivered film. It is not much a of a thriller. The main character is very unlikeable. The plot does not keep you guessing. I don't comprehend how this movie has such a high rating. Please save your time if you're looking for a thriller.
If Anything Happens I Love You (2020)
Beautiful and devastating
This is wonderfully crafted story that will sadly ring true to many families. The story will haunt your subconscious and sit with you long after the short. I have never rated anything a 10, but this short works on so many levels that I don't think there's a more effective way to tell this type of story.
Shirley (2020)
Good actors can't save bad plot
As other reviews mentioned, it's a slow burn with not much happening. It's really much better depicted as a slow drama, certainly not a thriller. The characters are very unlikeable and while that's often written by design, it does very little to drive the plot forward.
Lars and the Real Girl (2007)
Heart warming story, but requires leap of faith from the viewer
It's a very heart warming story with great acting, interesting plot. I won't repeat any information that hasn't been already shared.
The only part that requires the viewer to be unhinged from reality, is how every single person in the entire conservative town "is in" on the concept of helping lars. I mean, there's one scene were even paramedics and doctors treat her like a human being when she's brought in for emergency. There was even a vigil service attended by everyone in town.
Search Party (2016)
Self absorb millenial train wreck that I can't stop watching
These are 4 characters who I loved to hate. I've never seen a show where all protagonists are really unlikeable but it keeps you watching.
It's crazy to see the train wreck of bad decision upon bad decision that each of the characters can't seem to stop making, but it works really well as a story. This is amazing writing at its best.
Tudo Bem No Natal Que Vem (2020)
Good plot. Bad acting
It's a fairly good plot with good pace. However the main character over acts and is too gimmicky, which takes away a lot from the movie
The Holiday (2006)
Ok plot, but Jude law brings it!
Jude is amazing in this, funny and clever. The rest of the all star cast helps too, and even jack black is almost tolerable. Its a pretty good holiday Rom com even if you don't like Rom com.
Unsolved Mysteries: Tsunami Spirits (2020)
Doesn't fit the great unsolved mysteries narrative
By far the worst episode I've seen in the first two seasons. It stars off well, but it tapers off and hits tangent that has nothing to do with the traditional insightful unsolved mysteries
Tu hijo (2018)
Underrated
Someone described this as death wish meets irreversible, and that's exactly what it is. I'm surprised by the low rating. This is a slow burn at the beginning that picks up in the middle. Full of twists, turns and many uncomfortable truths.
Belzebuth (2017)
Falls apart in the middle
I lost respect for the movie as soon as statue Jesus started chatting it up ala Muppets, quite corny
The Lovebirds (2020)
From a fan of issa Rae and kumail nanjiani: not worth it
The sum of the parts is not greater than the whole. Perfect example of just having two amazing people on screen , does not equate into a good film. I've watched every single episode of insecure and Silicon Valley. However, this medium fails to capture the two stars quirky sense of humor.
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006)
Elegantly overrated
Pros: style, cinematography, acting
Cons: a plot that makes watching paint dry exciting, the ending makes absolutely zero sense. Please save your time
The Game Changers (2018)
Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless
Firstly, this is a high quality documentary. It has credible sources, including the epitome of manliness himself, Arnold Schwarzenegger. The data shown is sound and fairly accurate. Having said this, I'm very weary of any documentary that positions anything as a silver bullet. There is a clear propaganda tone being pummeled thru out there documentary. It's almost too obvious.
Like many, I'm on a keto diet. It works for me. It's inherently heavy on meat, non existent on grains, light on vegetables. So I'll leave you with this quote-
"Research your own experience. Absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, add what is essentially your own." - Bruce lee
Uncut Gems (2019)
Good acting. 2 hour panic attack
Never been an Adam Sandler fan but I give credit where credit is due. He holds his is own in this role, but the plot is really paper thin, and the character is deplorable, you almost want to punch him in the face
47 Meters Down (2017)
Underrated
Firstly, most horror is underrated on imdb and most foreign films are overrated, so I had to check this movie out when I saw the weak rating. It's an Edge of your seat thriller WTH a really good ending , much better than the 5.6
