...that won't materialize.
Sadly, this project has been cancelled, and I think that is a shame, cause it has much potential. Who doesn't want to see Madam Yeoh as the former tyrant with a conscience, as a series ?
The episodes of "Discovery" featuring her character, Empress Philippa Georgiou, are at least those which I like nearly the most. This character was a happy accident and cried for a spin-off.
Now have it, but not. And yes, the high priests of Star Trek Lore are literally emptying their dust bins above and over it, for violating every holy Star Trek rule and Gene R. High praised memento, and yes, they are right in some details, and inside their nostalgic bubble. But generally, they are not.
This is a (bit) cheesy, quirky approach, where the Federation and the Star Trek universe are just background. For a buddy-movie or a. Oceans xy styled adventure. The script is not quite grade A material, to put it mildly, not even B, which you at least would expect from a pilot of that production value. I guess those writer strikes in the US have their part in that.
Actors are doing what they can, or better, what the script and the director, who seems to be a bit of a novice, are letting them. They have not much room to build up a bit of chemistry.
But all in all, this was for me a nice entertaining space adventure, not the greatest, but good enough. Looking at the current landscape of Science Fiction productions, which is like a dry desert, this was a small oasis for the thirsty watcher.
A scriptwise nearly unforgivable thing is the finale that makes no sense in terms of what was built up previously about the "Godsend"'s impact. But see for yourself.
I give six stars, though it's mor of a five ;-)

Everything is typical here, the Buddy-Genre, the action, the good ones, the evil ones, the mercenaries, and even the dumb ones (of the passengers).
Butler is Butler (bold and sympathetic), Colter is Colter (stoic and sympathetic), and the scenario is quite the simple one, for an audience that needs 1 and a half hours of escaping reality.
And it works. One of the most forgettable movies you can imagine, with almost no background stories, with almost no character development, with almost no depht, it can draw you in until you are one of the few passengers, and later a part of the Captain's rescue mission.
The movie is well made from script, scenery and action to acting and music (Marco Beltrami). I rarely felt that it's a movie. Maybe when, after emergency landing, some passengers are complaining. Who would complain after that ? That was a bit too much of a cliché.
I watched it spontaneously, just out of curiosity, and had no trailer seen before.
So I didn't know the plot. I didn't know what would happen. That was quite a benefit.
I read, that the area of the Philipines, where the movie is located, is indeed most likely as it is depicted here. A beautiful, very dangerous place where warlords reign and people are abducted or killed.
