This is a good movie if you just want to watch something moderately entertaining on the cheap... but don't expect anything above that because you're not really going to be getting that. This is a pretty moderate and alright movie; it's not great, but not terrible either.
What you're going to get is a movie with a functional, albeit wonky at parts, story with alright characters that can give off some entertaining sequences and performances, and it does have a cool aesthetic with a pretty good setting of a motel in the middle of nowhere.
The movie has your expected tropes of whisper talking, references to other media, comedic relief sequences peppered throughout the movie, jump scare sequences, and an ending that you'd expect from a movie like this today. The movie does pull a considerable amount from Psycho and The Shining, which is fine. The only part that might not be good is that SOME scares last way too long, to the point that they're more goofy than scary.
Overall, this is okay. At best, it's decent enough, and it's ho-hum at worst. If you have a few dollars to spend, and an hour and a half to kill for the night with some friends or loved ones, then you could perhaps spend it on this... I'll give it a very light recommendation...
Apparently, this is a directorial debut from The China Brothers and, if this is just a showcase of skills and abilities, then I suppose it's cool... I guess this is just to show that they can get the job done... hopefully they go on to bigger and better things!

To start this off, if you're watching this movie based on the posters and trailers, you're likely going to be disappointment. Both sets of materials suggest some type of revenge movie around a husband getting revenge on a serial killer wife or something... that's not exactly what you're getting here.
What you're ACTUALLY getting is quite a sloppily put together story, of a psycho killer wife suffering from hallucinations of a previous victim, and the family of said victim slowly figuring out what's going on. On paper, the story sounds okay, but the execution is very uneven, with characters behaving strangely, weird shifts in tone and direction, and parts of the story that come off as plot conveniences.
For example, it starts off very dramatic (with a domestic abuse situation), then it almost turns into some twisted rom com after that (complete with a crazy dream sequence), and then it becomes a serious detective-type thing with ghost elements. It also has a very terrible ending that, had it not been for slotting in ONE scene with a specific character, I would have called it a complete butt pull!
The movie is also edited pretty weirdly. The first part of the movie has moments where it would just VERY awkwardly cut away to the next scene, with no clear transition, and it confuses you; there's a part of the movie where one character tricks the wife into taking a shower for a long time, implying that they're going to investigate something... AND THEN IT IMMEDIATELY CUTS TO THEM SLEEPING!?!?! This stops by the second part of the movie, where it feels like things just go on for way too long at times... not helped by some characters having a tendency to stare at people...
But the biggest crime is that the movie is kind-of boring; outside of an unintentionally funny murder scene, some goofy shots, as well as a weird ending, the movie just kind-of meanders around boringly and the acting is boring. The acting isn't really good, but I blame this on bad direction; it's either boring and phoned in, like Christopher Lambert's performance, or overdone, like the psycho wife in parts.
Overall, this is not really a good movie; it has unintentionally hilarious moments and it has some production value here and there, but they're not enough to save this snooze-fest of a movie.

So, I'm going to preface this that I saw this movie with my family; I'm not a big fan of Blumhouse's more recent movies, like M3GAN and the recent FNAF movie, as I just find them to be very tame movies... but I went and saw this with my family and, I have to say, this is another Blumhouse dud in my opinion
To begin, this is another PG-13 horror movie, which is basically code for "tame and inoffensive to not scare away paying movie goers." Not that it's impossible to do a PG-13 horror, as we've seen it done to amazing levels with Insidious... does this pull it off? Nope...
Sadly, we get another tame and inoffensive horror movie with tired jump scares, weak writing, and boring characters. The premise is cool, where a family is affected by a mysterious spirit in a swimming pool that affects the father by possessing him (after healing him) and trying to get him to kill people in turn. But the execution is kind-of bland, in that it's more of a sub-standard family drama that is very slow paced
Plus, despite being advertised like this would feature many pool-related kills, there's only really two on-screen deaths, being the opening kill and the final sacrifice (and they don't really show anything)... it's very disappointing, and it doesn't really substitute the lack of kills with much
Really, this is just a boring movie; you'd expect a crazy story about a killer pool or water spirit in the pool that kills a lot of people, but it's just a dry family drama that barely does anything truly interesting with its premise... I suppose it does look cool, with a few good shots, and the music is well done, so there's that...
But overall, this is a movie I'd say is better off skipped... I really wish Blumhouse can just allow these movies to just be R-rated movies; I get that PG-13 means more movie goers with money, but these movies are just bland when they're like this.
