I think a lot of commentators will compare Scoop to Woody Allen's other London flick - Match Point. However, I think a better comparison is that this movie is the comic half of Melinda and Melinda in the murder mystery genre that Allen dabbles in. Scoop accomplishes the same manufactured stage theater comedy feel that Melinda and Melinda does.
I think this movie is effective for the purpose it exists. The cast does a great job. Johannson is mesmerizing, Allen is endearing, and Jackman is the perfect blend of British charm and roguish mysteriousness.
I think if you want the great Allen comic genius that makes you laugh out loud or the suspense and terrifying character studies of Match Point you will be sorely disappointed. If you want entertainment without much artistry, you will be happily content.

I saw this at the San Francisco independent film festival, and it was totally contrived and boring. It was intended to shock the audience, I was just shocked on how slow and unimaginative this supposively innovative movie was. I won't give it away, but will only say that you will be disappointed if you decide to watch the whole movie through. It certainly does not get better as it drags on.
