The Coen Brothers have made some movies that are weird in a good way. Think "O Brother Where Art Thou" and "Raising Arizona". While "Drive-Away Dolls" is directed only by Ethan Coen, it is also weird in a good way. Geraldine Viswanathan is best known for the TV series "Miracle Workers". She and Margaret Qualley do a great job. And if you pay close
attention you'll see familiar faces in small roles. Two lesbians take a road trip in a car they're paid to deliver. Only they get distracted along the way and don't deliver it in time. They end up getting chased over some very odd cargo. It kept my attention throughout, but bible thumpers need not apply.

No Mold Here
10 November 2023
Wow, so much hate. You always hear that Hallmark movies are all the same. The same plot with just a few different actors. Not this time. Here is one that breaks the mold. It's completely different. And some just can't handle that. There is a love story, but the film is really about the sisterly relationship between two best friends and business partners. While some characters do relive high school for a time, it's more about appreciating being grown up and deciding what comes next. The two women play off each other well . And each also have family issues. All in all I enjoyed the fresh take on what a Hallmark movie could be.
Hanukkah on Rye
(2022 TV Movie)
Charmingly Unique (for Hallmark anyway)
19 December 2022
Warning: Spoilers
To be up front I'm not Jewish or even religious. But for some unknown reason I'm attracted to films about the Jewish experience. "Hanukkah on Rye" is a good one. Unlike a lot of Hallmark films, you're not going to see the same old actors that do them over and over. So unique actors and a unique story make for a charming film. Yes, it's a love story but the two main characters are introduced by a traditional matchmaker (letters only). And the older actors do an excellent job. They feel like a real family. Unfortunately the six hundred character requirement for reviews is somewhat too long for me. There.
Phantom Thread

They should put this film in the sleeping pill section of drug stores.

My favorite part of this film was the ending. No, not the end of the plot, the end of the credits after wasting two hours of my life. I recorded it on TCM so thankfully didn't waste money on it. When my wife went to the bathroom, I secretly fast forwarded 10 minutes. She didn't notice.
The Homecoming: A Christmas Story

Great Movie For Christmas
10 December 2019
This is my favorite film to watch each Christmas. One reviewer did not understand how this film could be liked more than the series. For me the film is superior. It's the only Walton's story shot on location with real snow. The Walton's house and barn are also more realistic for the times than the series. Mother, father, grandfather, Ike Godsey, the sheriff, and Charlie Snead are all played by different actors from the series. And higher level actors in my opinion. Being from the south myself, I appreciate small touches such as the sheriff pouring a pack of peanuts into his bottle of soda. This was a real southern "thing". Try it yourself. This film is great at capturing the atmosphere of a time long past.

Watch This Film If You Cannot Sleep
3 January 2013
During the first 30 minutes of this film, absolutely nothing happens. They spend minutes showing a limousine trying to park. Admittedly I cannot comment after the first 30 minutes because the movie was so bad I stopped watching it. You do get to see a wedding reception where once again nothing happens. I sometimes wonder how someone gets the money to make a film like this, rich uncle maybe? While there are certainly good actors here, they must have been desperate for a paycheck. Did I mention nothing happens? Doctors should prescribe this film for insomniacs. Maybe the director was so in love with his own work that he couldn't bear to cut the long pointless scenes.

Don't Watch This Film If You're Happy
29 December 2012
This is the most depressing film I have ever seen. It's a step by step guide to how the government can completely destroy the life of a person who has done nothing wrong. If they want something from you and you don't want to provide it, no problem...they will just jail you for the rest of your life unless you cave in. Jail you without being convicted of any crime. There is no happy ending for this film, only doom, gloom and destruction. It shows you how utterly powerful the government is and how citizens have NO power. If you want to end your day with no hope, by all means watch this film. I can certainly understand why it made no money. You would have to pass out anti-depressants with each ticket.
