Alphas (2011)
A good quality interesting show
I like how the writers don't immediately pan from one ongoing substoryline to another each episode but allows each substoryline play out over time. What I don't like is this 10 month wait for the next episode... I love the show, don't get me wrong, but as with most viewers, if the new season isn't out within a few months of the end of the old season i tend to forget about it and move on. There's only so many times one wishes to watch reruns when new content is always emerging and i think it is a bad move for the producers to make viewers wait almost a whole year to see what happened after the end of the last season. People are impatient, especially when a nice cliffhanger ending like the last epi gave us is left to rot and be forgotten.
I will TRY to remember how good the show was but 10 months... i doubt i will.
Shock Waves (1977)
Teaches you everything NOT to do....
... when on a remote island surrounded by an unknown number of enemies.
The acting was below low budget, the script may have been a good idea but was poorly implemented... I have seen worse movies but not many... there is just so much WRONG with this film the viewer finds them self scratching their head wondering what in the world the director was thinking...
Lessons we learned: When you have an enemy known to be water based, stay away from water When you are only but a few, and get separated, do NOT scream out for each other lest you attract said enemy If you DO find yourself in a body of water and you cant see your feet, don't take off your shoes.... (this is common sense anyhow) The way to kill a supposedly invincible water bound zombie is take off their "sunglasses" Don't stand up in a boat that's in water (duh) I can go on and on of things that were stupid about this movie, which was not frightening in the least and very predictable, but I don't have time to write a novel :). The ONLY redeeming quality about this movie was the "The End" at the end.
The Sunset Limited (2011)
This should be nominated for the best movie of ALL time
I have to say I was truly mesmerized by this film. It did't go in any way I would have been able to predict - anywhere throughout the movie. As a fan of both TL and SL I was drawn to watch this movie just because they were both in it. I was KEPT glued to my seat watching it for both the acting ability, the storyline and overall, I have to admit, I wanted to see who would win....
In my opinion, they both lost in the end, not saying the ending was bad, it was inspiring is what it was and left me thinking for days, if there WAS a final battle that played out like this, which side would i be on... Both sides had compelling arguments for their case, both sides did excellent jobs in laying out their arguments... was one side more compelling than the other? I would say that TL's side (if this was a debate) won hands down.. Does that make his side the winner? I am not sure...
That said... on the movie itself... I don't think I have EVER watched a movie with only 2 characters in it... EVER.. no extras, no supporting cast, just two men. Heck, even in 12 angry men, there was supporting cast. Do NOT let this sway you from watching this movie. It will keep you enthralled for the entire duration of the movie and unlike most, you will leave the theater (or wherever you see it) COMPLETELY satisfied that your dollars were well spent.
Super (2010)
Mostly in agreement with DonFishies review, however...
I differ on where the film could have done better... The crimson bolt - while he was a good character, was not notable in and by itself... The addition of Boltie MADE the crimson bolt... and IMO, it was a BIG mistake to do what they did with her character, preventing any real future sequel from being noteworthy. Ellen Page should have gotten top billing on this film, without a doubt. Without her, this film was pretty much boring most of the way through, and the viewer is always waiting for something to happen to keep the yawn factor from taking over. Ellen was that something and having her take a bullet in the head was not only just wrong, but a MAJOR error. Sure, have her get wounded maybe, but shot in the head?
Other than that, which was my only REAL complaint about the movie, it was OK. I gave it a 9 because of Ellen's performance (and this was the 1st time I have ever seen her in any role so I am not a "fanboy"), without her this movie would have rated a 3 or 4 at best.
Easy A (2010)
GOOD Movie, Chick Flick
I have been known to like the movies some call "chick flicks" but that is not really true. While movies like Serendipity and 10 things I hate about you are two of my favorites I am more of a horror/action-adventure fan. That said, my review of this film is simple: it is one of the best films i have EVER seen. Emma's role - while seemingly an easy one to play, is a very complicated one, and she pulled it off with great ease - The writers gave us a GOOD solid progression of events that were totally believable, All the major roles played their parts perfectly and believably, and the subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) humor present throughout this movie kept me watching with great interest waiting for more.
Having been a small and insignificant high school entity back in the day, I sorta could relate to how Emma's character started out. If I knew then what I know now, my life in high school would have been a lot more interesting - not as interesting or lucrative as Emma's character was, but fun to say the least. Ending was not a letdown in any way as a lot of these types of movies are, but left me feeling satisfied and it just "felt right"
Dead Like Me: Life After Death (2009)
I have to agree with the general concensus
That the show was lacking in some critical areas, lack of Rube being the biggest short falling; the new Daisy another.
That said, I liked the movie overall, I miss the show terribly, and watch old epis every chance I get. It is by far, the best TV "sitcom" i have watched since the passing of the late great M*A*S*H.
Though I agree i would like to see the return of Rube in his role if (and hopefully when) they decide to start new epis, I don't see that happening. For whatever reason he had for not reprising his TV role for the movie, Rube is gone and will be sorely missed. I caught an hint that they have plans on releasing new epis, at the very end - where George is inundated with Rube's trademark post-its... indicating that perhaps she will become the new lead for the group? That could prove to be interesting but i don't think her character has the rounding for the role. It would take a LOT of remaking her character to make it work and in doing so, would completely unbalance the rest of the show, making the overall total picture less than interesting.
No, i don't think any of the current characters should get lead, and NO ONE will ever be able to replace what Rube brought to the position and the show, but I think the only way to make this work would be to bring in a newcomer, this way none of the current established characters would have to be remodeled, and in bringing in a new character, it would give MGM the liberty to create the role specifically for that character.
and yes, bring back Der house of waffles!
