On the birth anniversary of the legendary thespian of Hindi Cinema- Dilip Kumar Saab, I want to discuss about the rare K. Asif film starring Yusuf Saab in the lead- HULCHUL-1951. This film is very old and is still a lesser watched one. I had never heard about this film till early 2000s when it was telecasted on Set Max first at 1 am in the night and finally in 2004 when it again came on Sony Max Sunday 1 pm when Max used to show old black and white classics in weekend afternoons.
The story of Hulchul, is quite interesting and has twists and turn throughout the plot. It has strong influence of Dilip Kumar's fav novel-Wuthering Heights (Both his Arzoo and Dil Diya Dard Liya were based on it), and then there is triangle, murder and finally tragedy. The director SK Ojha has kept the pace quite even except for some scenes in the second half where the film drags a bit. The story is aided by good production values. With K. Asif being the producer one can expect high production values. Although the movie is not a periodical like Mughal-E-Azam and Phool (1944) still Hulchul is a big film by any standard. It had a top star cast, well-constructed sets and though looks very old now still is interesting. The film stars Nargis, Balraj Sahani, Yakub, Sitara Devi, K. N. Singh, Jeevan and above all Dilip Kumar as lead. The music somehow was disappointing and songs dragged.
Dilip Kumar fits in the role of a young man very well. His young looks, emotions and feeble voice convey the character very well. I felt that the director wanted to cash on Dilip Kumar's popularity of Tragedy Kingand unnecessarily got him killed in the end. That apart he is terrifically restrained and shows tremendous underplaying in an era when loud acting was the norm, and very well earned the king of acting. Before pairing with Raj Kapoor, Nargis hade a successful pair with Dilip Kumar as well and they gave hits like Andaaz, Mela, Deedar and Jogan together. Hulchul released in 1951 did average business, but their scenes together are terrific. Yusuf Saab's scene with natural acting great Balraj Sahani are also treat. His rather refusal to the predator streak lady portrayed by Sitara Devi are also redtrauned. He maintains his soft-spoken charm infront of aggressive Yakub and is equally at ease as the pensive hero who gets beaten by ferocious villain K. N. Singh.
Overall an interesting movie and great to see the early charming and restrained era of Dilip Kumar!!!

Raj Kapoor@100!
As the cinema lovers celebrate 100 years of legendary Hindi cinema legendary showman cum international star Raj Kapoor, it's time to discuss his lesser talked about performance as well. Raj Kapoor was the ultimate Showman film maker India saw and probably the most popular Indian film star internationally across continents and languages.
Somehow I couldn't relate to Raj Kapoors style of acting in many films and it was only later that I started appreciating his cinema. In his later innings post Sangam however none of the films did that well as an actor. However, I would like to mention that in his later films ,Sanjay Khans ABDULLAH -1980 stands out for me.
The film is an epic desert saga set in Arab world and Raj Saab plays the title role very well.
Sanjay Abbas Khan was a great admirer of Raj Sahib and after the brief appearance in his Chandi Sona he signed the showman as lead here. Abdullah is a simple, pious Muslim who has a well, talks to camel and extremely soft spoken. He raises the Hindu child Krishna and saves him from evil bandits. The role was tailor made and Raj Saab nailed it so well that the pious Arab character we read in poems like Abou Ben Adham came alive infront of me.
His scenes with the kid, with Sanjay and how he talks to his camels are heart warming. His brutal torcher at hand of evil Danny is heart wrenching and seems like a prequel of the infamous Ghatak scene wherein again Danny torchers an old Amrish Puri. Another aspect of Abdullah is that Kapoor Saab shared screen with Mehmood after 22 years of their Parvarish post which there were rumors of some tensions between the two. Here they have great chemistry though.
A grand enjoyable action saga where Raj Saab delivers an ace and a film which needs to be seen much more than it is discussed for the fights between Sanjay-Zeenat after it's release! The film is a pioneer of grand action films set in Arab and later fims like Sultanat, and then Palay Khan and Khuda Gawah (set in Afghanistan though) carried this genre. I am sure Raj Kapoor fans will not be disappointed seeing his heart warming act!!!

Vinod Khanna was once considered as a top star in Hindi cinema. Infact, he was the media's blue-eyed man against the superstar Bachchan in late 70's. A shocking decision by Khanna to leave the filmdom and join Osho's ashram left the dream unfulfilled. However, after a 5-6 year gap when Khanna made a comeback with 2 back to back hits Insaaf and Satyamev Jayate, both released in 1987 he did prove his point. Following, these 2 movies came this movie with his friend Feroz Khan. Despite not being a hit for me Davayan has Vinod Khanaa in his best ever performance alongwith Gulzars Achanak and Raj Khosla's Mera Gaon Mera Desh and is brilliantly directed by Feroz Khan.
After making crime thrillers like Apradh ,Dharmatama and the biggest of them all Qurbaani, Feroz hit a slight low patch as Jaanbaaz despite having an excellent music track failed to match the success of his earlier movies. In order to recreate the magic Feroz made the most intense movie of his carrier-Dayavan. The movie was a remake of Tamil classic Nayakan directed by Mani Rathnam and had Kamal Hassan in the lead. Though its impossible to match Mani Ratnam and Kamal Hassan of Nayakan , I must say that Feroz Khan made a great remake of a classic movie. It is very difficult to make a good remake of a good movie and Khan deserves full credit for handling a subject which was so different from his style of cinema.
However, the highlight of the movie is Vinod Khanna. Kamal Hassan's Nayakan act CANNOT be matched BUT I must say that Vinod lived the role of Shakti to perfection and gave one of the best performances of a man caught in the web of crime. His diction, accent and typical Tamilian behaviour and look deserves a pat on the back of both Vinod himself and Feroz Khan.
Despite the fact that the film didn't do well and lot of critics didn't like it as the original masterpiece NAYAKAN was so fresh, I still feel Dayavan was very well remade and enacted!
