Ojing-eo geim: Unsu joeun nal (2021)
People misunderstood korean cinematography
I loved the ending. Watching korean movies for a decade or more gave me insight in korean culture which truly helped me understand this ending.
Gi-Hun stayed true to his character and everything else, like him killing Il-Nam or going to his daughter would be totally American way to end the series. His daughter is cared for by her rich stepfather, she has money, hapiness and education so he was not selfish nor stupid to turn around. He was totally in his character. Having a sob reunion with his daughter was unnecessary and would ruin it for me.
I mean no disrespect to american cinematography, but I didn't expect them to go down that path. Park's Oldboy and even Snowpiercer had some "american" parts, unlike Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and I really didn't want to see that here.
This was real korean drama, just like the ones I'm used to and it was a treat.
Besides that, I like Reddit analogy on red haircut which represents power (especially on the island) and explanation why he grieved for a year before paying off Sang-woo's debt and getting Cheul out of orphanage. Considering everything that happened to him, one year did not make a huge difference.
With all that said, one thing that not many people will agree with me on is that I don't want money grabbing season 2.
Everyone who watched korean melodramas or even action thrillers like Athena - Goddess of War, knows that they usually don't do seasons. They tell a story, sometimes in 10, sometimes in 20+ episodes, but when it's done, it's done. I don't want Squid Game Season 2. I know Netflix does, because we all watched the show and we all know what money brings out of people, but I don't need it.
Let me enjoy the series, let me think about it, let me wonder about things that may or may not happen, but don't insult my intelligence and serve me S2 on a platter like I can't fill in the blanks and use my own imagination to decide what will happen with Gi-Hun or the organizers.
This is not John Wick. And don't get me wrong, I love John Wick but it's a different kind of movie. Squid Game is complete, it has a perfect ending for korean drama and I don't want to see it ruined by money.
And later I read director didn't intend to make season 2 which makes me happy because that's the way Korean cinematography works. They are so creative in writing and have so many ideas that they don't need to milk the same cow again an again. I hope he will stand by it and make another great series, totally unrelated to Squid Game.
Watched the whole thing twice now, 10/10.
Sorry, not sorry. If you agree with me, you're my Gganbu, if you don't, watch something like Lost or Dexter and enjoy final season if you can, cause I couldn't.
Not a Game (2020)
Best gaming documentary I have seen so far!
High Score was fun. Part because I'm a gamer and part because I've met some of those gamedev in my career.
But this is something else. This is a true scientific and educational documentary that explains phenomena of video games, esports and gaming culture. It will help parents understand today's world and help them find a way to communicate with their children.
As a gaming dad, I knew most of these things but here it's all laid out in simple language so people who are not in gaming can understand it better, at least for the sake of their kids.
Video games don't cause violence, people do. Just as you don't kill people after hearing a death metal song, just as you don't blow up a building with C4 because you saw John McLane do it in Die Hard.
If anything, games offer people who are frustrated (often in dysfunctional families as a source) a way to get rid of that frustration and to run away from all the things they have to put up with during the day. Maybe bullied at school, maybe having abusive parents, being introverted, gay or something else that might get them undeserved hate or mocking.
But seeing all those people who were saved by gaming was so emotional and I hope it will help people understand all the benefits of gaming. And as they say in the trailer. You don't want your kid to play games 12 hours a day, but you don't want them to watch TV, climb trees or read for 12 hours straight.
Boundaries are important, but boundaries should be set with at least basic knowledge of the subject we're restricting in one way or another.
Today people are finally getting the difference between watching hours of movies and series and hours of gaming. Gaming has many benefits that movies and series do not have. Eye hand coordination, reflexes, connecting to people online worldwide, creating bonds and friendships with those people while TV is totally devoid of that and you are just fed with often meaningless content with no interaction on your part. And that makes us less healthy in the long run. Mentally and physically.
I often hear how parents limit their child's gaming sessions to 30 minutes per day. I would like to ask them if they do that themselves. Do they stop a movie after 30 minutes and continue next evening for another 30 minutes? Because it's similar. Not the same, because the time their kid spends building their city in Minecraft is doing miracles for developing their imagination, while the time spent in front of the TV doesn't have any health benefits.
Watch it and try to understand it.
I don't know who is review bombing this movie, but it's comical at best.
Especially the 1 star review which said: "Thousand languages in one documentary.my brain got burned down.after one point gave up reading subtitles then stopped watching altogether."
That's exactly what too much television does to you.
Orphan Black (2013)
Really nice SF thriller!
To be honest, I didn't wait for this show. I didn't know what was it about. My girlfriend watched the whole first season and recommended it to me. I have to say that this bought me in the first three minutes of the pilot.
The show itself is dynamic, tense, interesting, story is slowly unfolding but it has many twists.
But the real hero of this show is Tatiana Maslany.
Spoiler: She is so brilliant that I still can't understand that she's playing so many different roles. From Sarah to Rachel, Alison to Cosima, she is utterly believable and brilliant. My biggest highlight was the scene where Alison had to impersonate Sarah. That was some kick ass acting right there and it blew my mind.
I really hope Tatiana will get some nice awards for this since this is one of the finest acting I've seen in a long, long time.
Acting like this is something different and, I dare to say, more challenging.
Anyway, looking forward to season 2 and I can highly recommend this show to everyone.
Game of Thrones: The Rains of Castamere (2013)
Eyes blurred with tears
I have to say, after watching this episode, that this is by far the best episode of any series I've watched. Ever. I just sat there, silent, with tears in my eyes, thinking about what I just saw. Speechless and touched.
So emotional, so dark, so intense and so brilliantly directed. Highly recommended. Cast in the series is awesome and it's not hard to "feel" the characters.
I loved every bit of this episode. Music was beautiful, characters were beautifully portrayed, there were funny and sad moments, I just can't describe my feelings while watching this episode and even now, after a few days.
I will just say: The North remembers.
District 9 (2009)
I expected nothing and got masterpiece!
When I first came to cinema to watch District 9 I didn't expect anything. I didn't watch the trailer, I didn't know what the movie is about, I didn't even know who directed it.
After interesting, although slow introduction, the movie slowly began its transition from documentary to action and from action to drama. The main character is likable throughout the movie and you love him more and more as the story goes. Sharlto Copley's acting is brilliant and he is also one of the reasons this movie made it's way to my heart.
This movie left me speechless, Clinton Shorter (who was unknown to me till then) made a beautiful score and director Neill Blomkamp made a masterpiece I watched dozen of times and will watch it few more times for sure!
So 10/10 without any doubt. This movie is a keeper. :)
Keulraesik (2003)
One of the best love stories I have seen!
I gave this movie 10/10 because it's, beside My Sassy Girl and The Notebook, one of the best love stories I have ever seen. Storytelling is perfect, actors are excellent and music is very nice and ads to the atmosphere.
I highly recommend this to anyone. Not just to people who love romantic movies, but to people who love good movies, regardless of genre.
I just started to explore a wonderful world of Asian cinematography and so far, I'm absolutely amazed! :)
I'll also use the opportunity to recommend: Thirst, My Sassy Girl, The Classic, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy and A Tale of Two Sisters if you haven't watched them already.
