The Merry Gentlemen (2024)
Not quite merry
Where they trying to mix Magic Mike and those Hallmark Christmas movies, and it doesn't hit the mark really well. I always liked Britt Robertson in anything, but here seems like she is phoning it in, almost seems like she doesn't like being in this movie. Chad Michael Murray is ok with what he's giving, playing the quiet handsome nice guy pretty well. He and Robertson have a interest amount of chemistry, at times feels forced in there.
The dance scenes are just kind of there, don't really bring much to the plot. The other cast members are just going through the motions, that is what the rest of the movie feels like.
Gladiator II (2024)
Surprisingly good follow up
I remember seeing Gladiator (2000) and thought it was good and didn't think it there would be a part 2, but twenty-four years later a sequel is here. When I first heard of this, I thought it was a cash grab. But With Denzel Washington being in it, I had a feeling it would be good, because he rarely picks a bad project.
Now the acting is top notch mainly by Connie Nielsen, who is reprising her role from the first one, and also Pedro Pascal, Paul Mescal, and Denzel Washington really embody their roles quite perfectly. Ridley Scott's direction is top of the game. The fight scenes are taking to an 11, and the scenes of Rome take on a life of their own.
Hot Frosty (2024)
Lacey Chabert's charm keeps this movie interesting.
Lacey Chabert really gives a good performance as a widow running a diner, trying to keep it together emotionally is well played, I was really behind her the whole way. Now Dustin Milligan has a snowman that comes to life, is at times over the top, I can't but feel he was channeling Will Ferrell in ELF (2003), but he did a little better has the movie has the went on, but he and Chabert have no chemistry. The rest of the cast are alright but don't really do much.
Trying to be a Hallmark film with an edge, but doesn't quite get there, I mean it is amusing for the most part, but that's all you get here.
Red One (2024)
Holiday film that almost feels like a superhero movie.
Christmas is in chaos this year, cause Santa Claus (J. K. Simmons) has been kidnapped, and it's up to his personal bodyguard (Dwayne Johnson) and must team up with a bounty hunter (Chris Evans) to him to prevent Christmas from being ruined.
Dwayne Johnson gives a pretty good performance has someone becoming world weary about Christmas, and Chris Evans playing someone who's bitter and has no faith in Christmas. J. K. Simmons is memorable as Santa Claus and never plays it too overly jolly. Johnson and Evans have a pretty good, odd couple like chemistry. And the effects are pretty descent, almost feels like a superhero film.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever (2024)
A Christmas film with a lot of comedy and heart.
An ordinary housewife (Judy Greer) is suddenly in charge on putting together a yearly Christmas Pageant, realizing it's no walk in the park, but decides to do it, cause others believe she can't. But things are about to get more complicated, when she brings aboard the worst kids in the neighborhood. Will this Pageant go well this year?
A terrific heartfelt comedy, it has an enjoyable wonder years like narration. Judy Greer plays the part of a women trying to put together a Christmas Pageant and trying to hold her sanity in tac very well. The kid actors are also great, never play it too overly silly, all hit their marks perfectly. In this holiday comedy for all to enjoy.
We Live in Time (2024)
Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh are a tour de force.
If there was ever a movie that could tell a story of a couple very much in love and having ups and down of everyday life, that film is We Live in Time.
I really like the way the movie jumps around, back and forth through timelines. Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh really sell their love story. The movie itself shows their romance in a realistic way. And Garfield and Pugh give Oscar worthy performances. Sometimes it's not always easy to sit through, and the characters can be flawed and unlikable sometimes, but honest and human. It's basically a celebration of life and love, and sometimes we see ourselves in them.
Time Cut (2024)
Comes in second to Totally Killer.
When I first heard about the premise, I thought I've seen this premise already, like last year's entertaining Totally Killer. But I decided to give this movie benefit of the doubt.
Now in some ways it's similar to Totally Killer, but in other ways it's different. The characters start out kind of weak but get a little better has the movie goes on. The killer in the movie has a fierce look to him. There are some good surprises along the way, like the killer's identity, and the way it tries to be different from other time traveling movies that your used to seeing. It's not great, but entertaining for the most part, nothing more.
Goodrich (2024)
Terrific film about a man trying to come together.
Andy Goodrich (Michael Keaton) an art gallery owner, life has been thrown a curve, when his wife enters a rehab facility due to her addiction to pills, now Goodrich is trying to balance work and being parent to his kids, and now connecting with his oldest daughter Grace (Mila Kunis) from a previous marriage and is pregnant. Will Goodrich come together in the end?
Michael Keaton delivers a good performance has a flawed but descent man. Mila Kunis is also great has Grace, who really clicks with Michael Keaton, you feel their connection. The kid actors are also good, and don't just sell their scenes by being cute. A sweet bittersweet for all to enjoy.
The Wild Robot (2024)
When Ice Age met Transformers
Intelligent robot who is named Roz is shipwrecked on an island of wilderness, when Roz tries to the duties it requires. When trying to help, the animals look at Roz like a monster. Soon Roz comes across a bird's egg. And when the egg hatches, the baby bird looks at Roz has its mother. But will Roz fulfill that duty?
Pretty good animated film, also good voice acting. Like Ice Age (2002) , an enjoyable look at nature in a funny and heartfelt way. I enjoy the mix of science fiction and mother nature. Every animal has their unique personality. Roz is an interesting character also, a robot learns to adjust to their surroundings.
Girl Haunts Boy (2024)
An entertaining supernatural teen love story.
A quiet teenager named Cole (Michael Cimino) who just moved into his new house with his widowed mother, not sure what to think of it, soon discovers that he is not quite alone, when he finds a ring, that makes him see a ghost named Bea (Peyton List) a teenager from the 1920's. The two strike up a friendship, and soon fall in love. But how will this all play out?
It's not a classic, but it's entertaining. List and Cimino are well casted, with a descent amount chemistry. Now when the movie tries to be funny, it kind of fails on that part. I was a little annoyed when it was getting to the end, I was saying just end already. Had its moments, but nothing I would sit through again. But it did have nice ghost effects. And List really had the 1920's look and attitude down.
Saturday Night (2024)
T.V. history was made.
In 1975 Nobody knew what Lorne Michaels was trying to do with this concept titled Saturday Night Live, putting together a cast of unknown comedic talents, determined to do so, although a lot of people keep saying this is going to fail.
The filmmakers really captured the 1975 look very well, really takes you back to that time. The actors did an amazing job playing their real-life counterparts, you can tell they really did their homework, embody them perfectly. Even Nicholas Braun playing two parts of Andy Kaufman and Jim Henson. Although you know the history, but this film shows what a struggle it was to get there.
The Garfield Movie (2024)
Bill Murray was more Garfield than Chris Pratt.
Bill Murray has much as he is a pain in the neck lately, but his voice was more ideal for Garfield, but when I heard Chris Pratt has Garfield, I didn't think I was hearing Garfield, I thought I was hearing Star Lord trying to pretend to be Garfield.
Now the animation is pretty good, everything drawn pretty well. But the story and characters never really jump out at you, feels just kind of there. You'll feel like you've seen this tale so many times before, falls short on being original, but these days it's very difficult to be original. Garfield has been favorable character for years, but in my opinion Chris Pratt was the wrong voice.
Tarot (2024)
only good for a few scary scenes
The idea was interesting but not played out to well. Some scary moments here are effective. The characters were not well written, I felt we did not enough time to know, all seemed to be rushed.
The humorous moments don't seem to work, because it comes across like it's trying to hard to be funny, and it comes in like we are expecting to laugh. And the story seems like we seen a million other times in other scary movies. The effects are okay at best. Although the characters we are supposed to like, but I had problems with some of their actions, made it hard for me to root for any of them. All I can is see it for the scary moments.
My Old Ass (2024)
The Twilight Zone meets Dazed and Confused
18-year-old Elliot (Maisy Stella) who is going off to college in a few weeks, gets high on mushrooms with friends, has the night goes on Elliot gets a visit from her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza), Elliot does not believe her, until she says things that only Elliot would know, tells Elliot to do certain things, but will young Elliot go through with it?
Maisy Stella really does shine here, and so does Aubrey Plaza, when there together in a scene you instantly feel their connection. Megan Park really puts her heart in this as writer and director, balancing out the R rated material and the heartwarming parts very well. Percy Hynes White also brings some joy to the film as Chad.
Am I Racist? (2024)
Part documentary, part satire.
This takes an interesting funny look at racism in America, with the title of the movie asking the question. Matt Walsh is pretty funny, has he showed a look at people and places and making them take a look at their own culture and maybe being a racist.
Matt Walsh does enjoyable make a fool out of himself quite well, with all the places he goes, and he does it in a very subtle way, and never goes too far with silliness. Despite it being a comedy, the film makes us take a look at racism in America, and how ignorant our society can be at times. A fun look through, but not sure I would sit through this again, once was enough for me.
The Killer's Game (2024)
Almost would make Kill Bill and John Wick blush.
A hitman named Joe Flood (David Bautista) becomes quite weary about the business when he falls in love with a dancer named Maize (Sofia Boutella), and is then told he is dying, and decides to put a hit on himself, but then is told it was a mistake that he is not dying. It's too late to call off the hit, he must fight or die trying.
An entertaining action ride, if you watch enough John Wick and Crank, you'll know what you are getting here. Dave Bautista is pretty good, so is Ben Kingsley as Bautista's mentor. Sofia Boutella shines as a dancer that Bautista falls in love with. Let's not forget Terry Crews steals most of the movie in almost every scene he is in. Just enjoyable action ride, nothing more.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)
Michael Keaton returns as Beetlejuice, and after 36 years he never misses a beat.
The sequel that fans have been hoping for is finally here, and three main characters from the first film return, like Winona Ryder as Lydia, Catherine O'Hara, and let's not forget Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice.
Lydia (Winona Ryder) is now a celebrity Ghost Whisper but has nightmares about Beetlejuice. But after her estranged daughter (Jenny Ortega) is pulled into the afterlife. In hopes to rescue her she must enlist the help of Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton). And someone from Beetlejuice's past is coming for him.
Tim Burton really delivers like he did in the first film, hard to imagine anybody else who can do it as well. And Michael Keaton as Beetlejuice plays it like he never left the role. The effects are just as good, so are Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, Jenny Ortega, Willem Dafoe, and Minica Bellucci are great in their roles also. For fans in you love the original film, then I hope you'll give this one a look.
AfrAId (2024)
Trying to ride the coat tale of M3GAN.
I know this premise has been done to death, like 2001- A Space Odyssey (1968), and M3GAN to name some, where an A. I. gains all kind of control, that ends up being quite deadly.
A family gets a friendly A. I., and proves to be quite helpful, but are things really what they appear.
Now there are some good jump scares, but other than that, this movie has nothing going for it. Although John Cho is descent for the most part, and Katherine Waterson (who bears a little resemblance to Maura Tierney) is okay also, they play man and wife, but their chemistry comes across as awkward. And the A. I. character felt too rushed in. And all the other characters so null and void. In M3GAN everybody felt flushed out, unlike here.
Reagan (2024)
Dennis Quaid brings elements that was the greatness of Ronald Reagan.
Dennis Quaid plays Ronald Reagan, with such charm and grace, you can tell he watched enough videos of the man, and gets him down pretty well, manages to homage to him and not come across as a bad imitation.
The movie manages to show us a good deal of his life, and it never gets boring has it guides us through it. Even though Dennis Quaid gives an Oscar worthy performance, it never overshadows the other performance of Penelope Ann Miller has Nancy Reagan, who is just as Oscar worthy. Her and Quaid's chemistry is quite believable as a couple deeply in love. Just goes to show you that Ronald Reagan was one of our last great presidents.
Incoming (2024)
A slightly amusing Superbad wannabe.
Incoming is far from original, it's easily compared to American Pie (1999) and Superbad (2007). But it was amusing, not saying it was great, not like it was trying to be.
The acting from the actors is descent, because they are teenagers playing teenagers, making there performances very real, and there chemistry is quite good. But the problem is that the movie looks for comedy that just isn't there, moments come across like it's trying to hard to be funny, and some shock moments look like they where added in like the last minute. But it was amusing to say the least, but don't expect nothing more or less.
The Forge (2024)
A movie that teaches to hold onto faith.
The story centers around Isiah (Aspen Kennedy) a smart 19-year-old who seems to have real direction in his life, applies for a job at Moore's Fitness. And the owner Joshua (Cameron Arnett) takes him under his wing, in hopes to steer in the right direction, but the question is will he?
I really like this movie, teaches us to hold onto our faith, and never overdoes it. At times it does not feel like a movie, but real people in real time. And the performances are really good, when somebody feels good or sad, you the audience feels it with them. It also reminds us to hold onto our faith in life, through good and rough times.
The Union (2024)
Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg shine in this action rom com
Mike (Mark Wahlberg) a construction worker who lives an ordinary everyday existence, but soon things change when Roxanne (Halle Berry) his high school sweetheart reenters his life, only to discover that Roxanne is a spy and needs Mike for a certain mission.
Halle Berry and Mark Wahlberg really have good chemistry, you buy that they have history together. Action scenes are well shot, not going in fast and the furious thing, and it never goes too much in James Bond like territory. The film has cliches you see coming a mile away, never tries to pretend to be clever. J. K. Simmons, Jackie Earle Haley, and Mike Colter do pretty well in there supporting roles.
It Ends with Us (2024)
This movie was mixed for me
I'm guilty for not reading the book, and Justin Baldoni directing and casting himself is pretty good. I felt the trailer was a bit misleading, it made us feel that Ryle (Justin Baldoni) was an abusive jerk, but the whole movie shows that he was not all bad, but just someone with issues.
Do I think this glorifies abuse, well not really. Blake Lively does pretty well as Claire, but her chemistry with Baldoni comes across has awkward, I keep hearing there was bad tension between them off camera, and it kind of came through on camera. The flashback parts are well written, feeling like there a separate movie. The rest of the cast do pretty well.
Borderlands (2024)
Not a game changer, but an entertaining film, nothing more.
I'll confess I played a little bit of the game; the movie is trying to be similar to Guardians of the Galaxy. Although not quite as good. But a fun film to sit through, you really get a feel for the characters, you enjoy watching the adventure they all go on.
At times it does have a Star Wars and Mad Max like feel to it. Kevin Hart, Jamie Lee Curtis, And Cate Blanchett all seem to be having a blast, and all the other actors also are having also. I didn't hate as some people did, but I went in expecting nothing more or less, in the end that is what I got, a fun entertaining movie, and that is what you should expect also.
Trap (2024)
A concert to remember
One day Cooper (Josh Hartnett) is taking his 14-year-old daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to a concert for her favorite music artist named Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan), but sees that whole arena is surrounded by police guards, and is told that the infamous serial killer is at the concert, but the killer is actually Cooper, and will he outwit the authorities before they catch him?
Josh Hartnett gives a solid performance as a father and the killer, at times you mixed feelings like you want him to get caught and then you don't, Hartnett delivers a Norman Bates like performance. The movie really delivers the suspense, keeps you on the edge of your seat. M. Night Shyamalan once again delivers.
